containment. a crew from our sister station captured this jarring video of flames surrounding a street in altadena tonight. these people trying to evacuate their horses after letting others free in hopes of escaping the inferno. >> we booked out of there to get these out. i got, i got let's see. >> we loaded for two. >> three. what is that? nine. and how are these horses doing? >> 11. 12. there's 12. yeah. no, they're pretty wired up there. yeah. they're getting used to. >> they're getting used to it now. but when the wind is blowing and the embers are, they don't really know what to do. >> dozens of people were also evacuated, evacuated from a senior center tonight in altadena. a mandatory evacuation order covers the entire eastern half of that city. tonight, governor newsom has secured federal assistance for both wildfires. let's now bring in meteorologist mark tamayo. mark these powerful winds, creating a worst case scenario for fires.
11:02 pm
yeah. >> that's right greg. so dry in southern california, the winds really picking up throughout the day today in fact really increasing this evening. in fact this was the scene earlier this afternoon looking out toward the palisades fire. here's the satellite showing you that smoke plume, a defined wind out of the north and northeast, pushing that smoke plume out into the pacific, and some of the winds gusting. typically, a windy day would be 30 to 40 to maybe 50 miles an hour. these numbers are really up there. burbank. over 80 miles an hour. same for the malibu hills, beverly hills one side and the hills there. actually 71 miles an hour even closer to the coastline. huntington beach, 51mph. right now. you can see some more wind reports for southern california. the red flag fire warning is in place for all these areas in red, into your wednesday and into your thursday. so unfortunately, this forecast is verifying with those winds picking up, possibly approaching 100 miles an hour for the highest peaks of southern california, and that dry air

>> this looks like a war zone here, mike. i'll give you a look. home after home. the ones right near the camera, they. we lost them a couple of hours ago. smoldering debris further down on radcliffe as it runs parallel to temescal canyon. that's a two story home. it is burning out of control on the east side of radcliffe. through those trees, you can see the flames licking up through some more homes over there. because initially, as this fire moved through, the winds were blowing from the west to the east, meaning they were blowing from the right side of your screen across to the left side, blowing all those embers in this direction. so the homes on this side hit first, started to burn embers across the street. that neighborhood, that part of the neighborhood here on radcliffe, burning, still burning is even as we speak. and down along there, past that area, as we look over toward that is where some fire trucks have now stationed on temescal. but look it up on the hill, the bluffs up there, a mansion fully engulfed, burning as some of the embers have hit that. so the entire area is sealed off, fire

the body of the fire has burned in various directions. we have zero containment on this fire, and so we have open front all around this fire, all the communities that surround this fire are in in a threat. and so because of that threat, it's difficult to pre-stage a fire engine at every single home. so it's a guessing game for us. >> cal fire's scu and ccu teams, which serves several bay area counties, shared photos on social media showing their firefighters supporting agencies like the los angeles county fire department. >> up here in northern california, we have the diablo winds, which are very similar. it comes at different times of the year, but in southern california, they do have the east winds or the santa ana's as they are known. they are seasonal. however, we are seeing that they are lasting longer into the year, which is not typical. >> governor gavin newsom visited the fire lines, sharing video of a briefing. >> we're not out of the woods by
