tv   KTVU Mornings on 2  FOX  January 8, 2025 5:00am-7:00am PST

5:00 am
powerful winds and dry conditions. we have the very latest on the thousands of people forced to evacuate and counting down to the final days of president biden's time in office. the last minute executive actions he's taking before donald trump takes over. >> from ktvu, fox two news. this is mornings on two. >> well, good morning and thank you for joining us. welcome to mornings on two. i'm dave clark. >> good morning i'm pam cook. it is wednesday january 8th. supposed to be in the middle of winter. but boy we're talking about some rough fire conditions up and down the state. let's check in with steve paulson. the winds. >> we've had rain, thankfully. we have, but they haven't had any. yeah, i think it's the driest on record to start a rainy season down there. we'll get to southern california. whether we come up about ten minutes. we'll just do hours here locally here on the quick hit. these temperatures are correct. it is 41 in palo alto, yet it's 56 in san jose. no wind
5:01 am
versus an offshore breeze that will do it. and livermore has an east wind, which is why they're 50. travis 31 northeast to 31. yet other locations are less than 5 or 10mph. it just depends. it will not be as windy today. san jose though, there's that's why they're 56 right there. and sfo had an east wind all morning long. we still have a wind advisory until 10:00. but really i think the wind speeds will start to come down throughout the day. there's been some really strong gusts though in the oakland hills, high to the west, the low in southern california, arizona. and therein lies the issue. that is a tremendous pressure gradient. and it has been all about the wind and the fire in southern california for us. clear, breezy, windy, not as bad. sunny, mild to warm temperatures will be above average. we had 70 yesterday in santa rosa and also san jose went 68 today. all right sal here. it's 5:00 in the morning. we all right out there? >> yeah. we are doing okay so far steve good morning to you. good morning to you at home. let's go out and see what we have now. traffic is moving along okay. at the bay bridge
5:02 am
with no major issues. you can see that traffic is looking very good and it continues to do so as you drive into san francisco again. we also do have a good looking commute on the east bay freeways in general, with no major issues there. at 501. let's get back to the headlines. >> thank you sal. topping our news. it's a devastating scene around southern california as multiple wildfires are burning and tens of thousands of people have been ordered to evacuate. the city of los angeles has declared a state of emergency. this is time lapse video of the eaton fire near pasadena. it started just after 8:00 last night, and overnight it grew to 1000 acres. right now, that fire is 0% contained. fire officials say strong winds are driving the fires, making them spread quickly. >> well, 40 miles east of that, emergency crews are still battling another wildfire. it's named the palisades fire. it started about 1030 yesterday morning. it's burned almost 3000
5:03 am
acres in an area near pacific palisades, just north of santa monica. an estimated 30,000 people are under mandatory evacuation orders. the flames are affecting communities in santa monica, malibu and into topanga canyon. that fire has destroyed several homes, and tens of thousands more are still in danger. >> we have some new video of emergency crews bulldozing dozens of abandoned cars on palisades drive. they're clearing the roads to make it easier for crews to get in and neighbors to get out. fire officials believe the cars were left behind as people fled the area trying to escape the fire. >> well, we're also learning more about some of the really terrifying moments people experience as they were evacuating at a senior living center in altadena. more than 90 people were evacuated last night as the flames burned in nearby pasadena. the embers could be seen burning right across the parking lot, while people in wheelchairs and gurneys were evacuated from that building.
5:04 am
the fire crews used emergency vehicles to quickly get those residents to safety. >> firefighting crews in the bay area have been deployed to help in southern california. cal fire's scu and ccu teams normally cover several bay area counties but were in southern california. they shared these photos on social media showing the firefighters supporting agencies in the los angeles county fire department, and more teams are on standby. fire officials say crews across the state can be ready to hit the road in less than an hour to help if called. >> we're not out of the woods by any stretch of the imagination. you may feel at home that you're fine down in riverside county, san bernardino county, down in ventura county. other parts of the state. but there's a reason we pre-positioned hundreds of assets and personnel on sunday in anticipation of this wind event. >> the strong winds will continue to challenge the containment efforts today. wind gusts up to 60mph are expected
5:05 am
to last through tomorrow. here's a live look at the fire in southern california right now. you can see just the intensity of this. steve's been talking about how dry it is in southern california. they have not had any measurable rain in months and months. so again, we're keeping an eye on the multiple fires that are burning in southern california, in los angeles county and the evacuation orders in place. we'll continue to update that story. all right, pam. >> time is 504 here in the bay area. strong winds knocked down trees and temporarily blocked freeways. ktvu ali rasmus is in alameda. now to show us some of the problems that happened overnight. good morning ali. >> good morning dave. one of the problems right here behind us, we are on union street in alameda. that's near central avenue, and you can see winds overnight around 1:00 this morning. knocked down this 40 to 50 foot tree. and it came crashing down in the driveway of this home here. luckily, no one
5:06 am
was hurt. but the owner of this home says that a couple of the cars were damaged. if you take a live look right now, you can see alameda power crews are out here. they've been all up and down this street since the overnight hours. and in other parts of the city, they're working to reconnect. power to this home. luckily, we talked to one of the guys out here. working in this one house is the only one that had the power knocked out, because that tree brought down a cable. again, no one was hurt in the home, but wind gusts also caused other problems. in alameda. some power outages and some neighborhood streets. and then around 2:00 this morning, crews noticed this power pole at clement street and chestnut street leaning over, and officials there had to close the street temporarily until they started to work on getting that stabilized once again. we're going to be heading over there in a little while to check on their progress there. then also in the east bay in oakland, the wind caused problems on highway 13. trees came down, blocking the southbound lanes of the highway at redwood road. this happened just before 3:00.
5:07 am
and then there was a similar problem on the southbound broadway terrace exit, also on highway 13, right around the same time. but back out here live in alameda, it seems jarring because the air is completely still. right now. there is not even a slight breeze out here. most of the problems happened during the overnight hours between one and around 3:00 this morning, but now things have definitely calmed down. so alameda power crews say they're going to be going throughout the neighborhood and checking on some of the problems that happened overnight. live in alameda ali rasmus, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right. ali thank you. time is 506. we now have reaction from the victims in the vallejo kidnaping case from almost ten years ago to the new cases against the convicted kidnaper matthew mueller. mueller was convicted of kidnaping denise huskins and sexually assaulting her at a cabin in tahoe back in 2015. at first, vallejo police didn't believe her and her now husband aaron quinn, claiming the details were just too far
5:08 am
fetched to believe. but this week, mueller was charged with kidnaping three people near san ramon back in 2015. the fbi says evidence shows mueller has been breaking into homes since he was 16 years old. last week, the santa clara district attorney charged mueller with home invasions in mountain view and in palo alto. in 2009. >> alameda police are investigating a series of burglaries that have happened in the last two weeks. an ulta beauty store in the city's south shore center was hit twice just before, and then after the new year, the cannabis dispensary on webster street was burglarized just before the new year, and in the marina village shopping center, 360 gourmet burritos was also hit. however, alameda reports overall burglary incidents went down by 40% last year. >> our time now 508. the white house announced another flurry of last minute executive actions
5:09 am
as president biden is wrapping up his time in office. that includes banning drilling and mining on more than 800,000 acres of federal land. another executive action is a new rule that bans medical debt from appearing on credit reports and the transfer of 11 guantanamo bay detainees to oman. however, it's likely incoming president donald trump will challenge some of these orders when he takes office. >> typically, anything done through executive action can be undone through executive action. is it going to take some time? absolutely. >> biden administration also reportedly is negotiating with the taliban to exchange americans detained in afghanistan for a high profile prisoner in guantanamo bay, thomas jefferson. >> all right. we will start in southern california here. and i need a 32nd lead because i'm trying to update a lot of graphics here. a lot of high clouds are spilling over us and
5:10 am
then diving into southern california. so they get cloud cover. unfortunately, they're still getting roaring wind. malibu hills, 65mph in malibu, 56 and on pch and on the beach 41mph. damaging wind. drier air moving in. relative humidity is just bone dry. the problem here is i've seen gusts. i mean, i was looking at fremont canyon, had 94mph. i mean, there's chino hills 62. i mean, it's just roaring for some down there. temperatures pretty warm and the humidity is really low. and that's the problem here. the rainfall, they haven't had any. they've had no rain at all. i think they've had since the rain year began, which is july 1st, 16/100 and only 4% of average. so i mean this is just bone dry. driest start ever i believe, to their rainy season. you can see the cloud cover spilling over, coming down from, you know, about 25,000ft. that's a lot of high clouds. we have some pretty good gusts here. oakland hills 54. that's right above the claremont. las trampas near lime
5:11 am
ridge. travis, lake chabot and calaveras road 35 to 54mph. although, as ali mentioned, it's calm and there are where she was and there are a few locations where it's like, what breeze? but travis still 31mph. so we have a wind advisory that takes us until 10:00 this morning. i think by later today, the wind speeds will start to really come down. 50s on a lot of the temps are 60s. napa airport is 62 degrees yet. mountain view is 4435, upper lake to 62 and point reyes. boy, you don't see that very often. winds are 63. in the mountains. it's cold. truckee 21 south, lake tahoe at 23. but with this high in place, it looks like a really dry pattern and maybe even another round of wind going into early next week. >> you guys all right. thank you steve. a new state law is designed to make streets safer for pedestrians. the local city that's still trying to figure out the best way to implement and enforce it. >> also, a powerful winter storm is affecting the other side of the country. the devastation it

has already caused and why i s t over

on two. here are some of the stories we're following for you this morning. several wildfires are burning right now in southern california. these are live picture shots. the city of los angeles declared a state of
5:15 am
emergency as tens of thousands of people evacuated. >> we now know a former acting police chief for antioch will be back on the job. captain joe vigil is the newest acting police chief for the city of antioch, and he starts friday. the change of leadership comes as the antioch police department's interim police chief, brian addington, is retiring. the focus for the department is to get back to full staffing. >> and later today, san francisco's new mayor takes office. several events are scheduled, starting with mayor elect daniel lurie volunteering at saint anthony's this morning. he'll be sworn in at a ticketed event at civic center plaza the following the ceremony at 1130. mayor lurie will celebrate in chinatown. >> the casket of former president jimmy carter is now lying in state in the capitol rotunda in washington, d.c, for people to pay their final respects. president carter will lie in state through thursday ahead of his funeral service, which will be held at the washington national cathedral. lawmakers eulogize carter during
5:16 am
a ceremony emphasizing his values and leadership. >> james earl carter jr. loved our country. he lived his faith. he served the people and he left the world better than he found it. >> after tomorrow's funeral in washington, his casket will travel back to plains, georgia, where he will be buried next to his wife, rosalynn carter. tomorrow is a national day of mourning, and many buildings and services will be closed, including the stock exchange. >> our time now. 515. several cities in the south bay are changing parking laws to comply with the new state law. the day lighting bill requires vehicles to park at least 20ft away from the approaching side of all crosswalks. the city of san jose is now trying to eliminate corner parking spaces all over the city, to make it easier for drivers to see people walking
5:17 am
across the road. >> actually, it makes sense. it's nice to be able to see around the corners, because before some of the cars were parking right at the corner. >> the hope is that this law will be similar to the restriction on parking within 15ft of a fire hydrant. the idea is that if you're a driver and you've been trained and you've taken the driver's test, you know that law. so we don't need to paint red in front of every single fire hydrant. >> now san jose is working in phases to put this law into effect, and they plan to issue warnings before they give tickets to drivers. the city of santa clara will also use this month as an educational period, but sunnyvale plans to issue $53 tickets for breaking the law beginning this week. >> starting tomorrow, san jose rolls out a new pilot program to reduce the number of rv's on the streets. people living in an rv encampment on chenoweth avenue will be the first of 30 sites to receive two week notice to move.
5:18 am
they will also receive information about transitional housing and sanctioned parking sites. once the two weeks are over, tow trucks will come in and remove the remaining rvs. opponents of the program say it puts the unhoused at risk, but mayor matt mehan says this program is about safety for everyone. >> prioritize the sites that have the largest negative impact on the community, particularly those near schools, parks, residential neighborhoods. >> this program runs through the end of the year with a $1.5 million budget. >> our time now 517. the justice department is suing six large landlords for using an algorithm to help set rents and keep them high. ten states, including california, have joined in that lawsuit. prosecutors say the companies also share information on rental prices and occupancy in order to increase their profits. the landlords were added to an existing lawsuit
5:19 am
against the property management software company realpage. the company says it's being scapegoated for high housing costs that were caused by a shortage of homes. >> another winter storm is hitting the u.s, and ten inches of snow is expected from dallas to nashville. areas that do not usually see snow. several parts of the country are already dealing with a deadly storm that dumped near record levels of snow. about 31 million americans are still dealing with weather advisories from the midwest to the east coast, and hundreds of thousands of people have been without power. the weather caused issues for people on the road, as crews scrambled to clear the snow before it iced over. >> the ice and snow will not melt, and some of these areas are just not used to dealing with a lot of snow and ice, and that can cause problems. >> the new storm system is expected to bring freezing rain to the southern plains, so the weather may impact travel in that area. temperatures are expected to remain below freezing into the weekend in several states.
5:20 am
>> time now 519. will yosemite national park reports a significant amount of snow compared to this time last year? take a look. this photo posted on social media shows the meadows blanketed with snow. park officials say at the beginning of 2024, there were only three inches of snow. at the start of this year, there were 31in of snow. tuolumne meadows rangers say they're still hoping to get even more snow in the future. >> magical place year round. it's so pretty. >> in the distant future. >> in the distant future. >> okay, i mean, it looks dry for a bit, right? yes. although maybe out to the 23rd or 24th. you know, this, this kind of a pass blocking pattern where everything is kind of blocked in the atmosphere. and usually the last three weeks, usually they last three weeks. we'll go to southern california. the winds still cranked up down there on many, a lot of high clouds spilling in. but that's just because it's coming over that strong off shore direction that is, from the upper levels of the
5:21 am
atmosphere to the surface. malibu hills, 65mph in malibu 55. and on the beach pch and on the beach 40mph. so i mean, there have been gusts. fremont canyon had gusts to 94mph earlier, and the dry air has already arrived. so this is a really tough situation. and the problem is there may be another round of this coming in early next week, but it's just going to be a tough day. once we get to daylight here, then maybe we can get some drops going. but it's just too hard right now. they can't do it too. too much wind. you can't see. for us it will be a sunny day, although the higher clouds spilling down. but we have some decent gusts here. for some, not for all. mainly in the hills now. oakland hills above the claremont 54. that was about an hour ago. las trampas near lime ridge. most of these are east bay. travis, though at 40. lake chabot 38 and calaveras road at 35. los vaqueros reservoir is also in there as well. there it is, northeast 40, right above the. right above the caldecott. there. east wind in the city and
5:22 am
north wind. although not screaming here, but for some travis 31mph. then you can see it's breezy for some, but not bad for others. we do have a wind advisory until ten, i think later today that we'll see these wind speeds tail off pretty rapidly, 50 on a lot of the temps, even 60s, i mean anywhere from 40 to 60, depending on if you get the breeze or not. kensington is 49. alameda, though, is 60. walnut creek 49, lafayette 45. yet alamo 5357. castro valley 56. el sobrante at 54. so there's some warm temps here. mild, i should say 20s up in the mountains, including truckee, south lake tahoe. that high doesn't like the low, and it's trying to fill it with the wind. and it's once the low kicks east, then it will start to see a decrease in the wind speed. does look like though. if there's a silver lining, maybe some rain for arizona. they could use it as well. that low will help. breezy wednesday clear skies, breezy to windy. lots of sunshine, mild to warm. don't think it will be as warm as yesterday, but it will be close with 60s to a few upper
5:23 am
60s. >> all right steve, thank you. time is now 522. a new scam for you to be, to know about and to worry about. we'll tell you what to look out for as scammers are now using amber alerts and preventing consumers from being hacked. the new labels that are designed to help you.

pretend to be with the amber alert system. the chp says these scammers are asking parents to enroll their children in an amber alert system so they can be notified if anything ever happens. then the scammers asked for confidential information and for a fee to pay for the program. >> no need to even entertain any of this information. do not give out any of your personal information. do not give any information of your child. do not give away your home address. don't give any information to these scammers. just hang up. >> now the chp is the only agency that's authorized to activate amber alerts here in california. the federal government rolling out some new labels there aimed at helping you pick smart devices that are less vulnerable to being hacked. now, under the voluntary program called the u.s. cyber trustmark initiative, manufacturers can add a label to their products if they reach federal cybersecurity

game for us. >> fire crews are scrambling as dangerous winds have caused multiple fires to spread quickly in southern california. what we are learning about that firefight and the conditions this morning. and san francisco is getting a new mayor today. we have a look at how the city is celebrating and preparing for a new leader from ktvu, fox two news. >> this is mornings on two. >> good morning. welcome to mornings on two. thank you for joining us i'm pam cook and good morning i'm dave clark wednesday morning january 8th steve paulson is here. >> and steve winds during the night were a problem here for some. >> for some. you said you didn't have much. i didn't have any. yeah we did. too bad we did. see, it just depends on your location i know. where's ali, where's ali? ali said there's no
5:31 am
wind here. ever. ever. ali is out there and other locations up in the oakland hills. it's been rocking and rolling. no doubt there are some significant differences. palo alto with no breeze is 41 yet. san jose airport is 56. so i mean, san francisco is 58. still pretty good little breeze. and it's no doubt for most offshore for most. i mean, travis been up to 35mph sfo, east wind, hayward. east wind livermore. east wind, san jose and sea. north to 23. that's holding their temp up for sure. wind advisory till ten, i think. after early afternoon we'll start to see wind speeds come down. some they already have, but it's all about southern california. my goodness. i mean it's just even on the beach 40mph in the hills. still 65 to 90 clear. breezy for us. not as bad as yesterday. it will be mild to warm. we get that east northeast breeze. so temperatures well above average here with 60s mid 60s to upper 60s. all right. sal is here. 531 we begin with we begin with oakland. >> we have a problem in oakland, steve. southbound 880 at high street. a truck has spilled
5:32 am
metal bars all over the lanes of interstate 880 heading south. and chp has temporarily stopped traffic. they're picking up the debris. the problem is, a lot of cars hit the debris. now they're disabled on the right hand side. so it's becoming somewhat of a scene there as these cars are disabled. otherwise, we have a decent commute to start off the morning. getting into the bay bridge. it looks pretty good. silicon valley commute. also off to a good start. 530. oh, by the way, one last thing. bart has significant delays on the san francisco airport line. if you take bart, you should. you should check with their website, its website, there to see what you have to do there. now, let's go back to the desk. >> all right. thank you. it is 531. we continue to follow the latest on the wildfire emergencies in los angeles county. almost 3000 acres have now burned in the palisades fire. it started less than 24 hours ago in an area along the coast northwest of santa monica. about 30,000 people are under
5:33 am
mandatory evacuation orders. reporter gigi graciette from our sister station, fox 11, in la shows us how intense things are this morning in pacific palisades. >> reporter that's right. we're on sunset boulevard in the pacific palisades area. this is the corner of sunset and chautauqua. and in the distance there you can see multiple homes on fire. and this is not the only area of sunset boulevard where the houses are burning. there are at least eight, possibly up to a dozen houses on fire right now. and you might be able to hear the wind. the wind is a huge part of this fire. storm, the santa ana winds. a very rare occurrence here in the month of january. and the los angeles area. we usually see these in november and december. we actually saw them. we had multiple fires with a lot of loss, a lot of houses lost. and now the loss here in the pacific palisades neighborhood is going
5:34 am
to be very great. and we're not only talking about structures that are burning, we're talking about injured people. we have a 25 year old firefighter who suffered a very serious head injury. we have a man that was found stumbling on pacific coast highway with burns to the majority of his body. he is listed in extremely critical condition, and he is only one of multiple burn patients. so it's not only going to be about the dollar amount of houses lost, it's also going to be about the lives that are affected and the injuries in this fire. you may be able to make out the wind. it is fanning these flames that ember cast. firefighters will tell you that can be pushed anywhere from up to a mile to five miles away, causing more fires. and that has firefighters scrambling. we have firefighters here from throughout southern and northern california. more resources are being called into southern california because the
5:35 am
palisades fire is only one of three major fires that are burning right now. we have tens of thousands of people under mandatory evacuation orders here in palisades. 30,000 people were ordered out of their homes yesterday because of the danger this fire poses and continues to pose the number of the acreage burned right now close to 3000. but that number will go up later, and we expect to hear from fire officials later on. that is the latest. i'm gigi graciette with the fox 11 affiliate in los angeles covering the palisades fire. we'll send it back to you. >> all right, gigi. thank you. time now, 534. another wildfire started east of downtown los angeles in the city of altadena, near pasadena. it's the eaton fire. it started last night. it has exploded in size this morning to more than 2000 acres. you're looking at video of a senior center being evacuated,
5:36 am
with dozens of residents being moved out of that center. both fires are 0% contained, and as people were evacuating yesterday, one of our sister tv crews in l.a. captured stunning video of flames surrounding a road in altadena. people were seen walking through the smoke. they say they went back to rescue their horses. they said some other horses free, hoping they would also escape this inferno. >> you have a couple we just let loose over there. we're trying get as many as we can. out. >> yeah. are any homes out there on fire? >> ozzy, i did not pay attention. i just drove straight to the barn to get my horses out and get the rest of these guys out. we're not going to let them burn now. >> strong winds will continue there today. it's going to hamper the fire fight. the national weather service says this may be the most destructive windstorm to hit los angeles since 2011. and we want to show you a live picture of the fire
5:37 am
in southern california right now. again, this is live. you really don't have to say anything. you can see how dangerous, how treacherous the situation is right now as we're speaking. and there are many people, many homes and buildings affected by these flames still out of control. we'll continue to watch it and bring you updates throughout the morning on mornings on two. >> well, even before taking office, president elect trump is talking about massively expanding the united states. he's been talking about acquiring greenland, the panama canal and even canada. he says he's interested in greenland for its resource rich land. panama is key for the canal imports and exports and fees for using it. trump also spoke on why he thinks canada becoming a part of the u.s. would be beneficial to both countries, canada and the united states. >> that would really be something you get rid of that artificially drawn line, and you take a look at what that looks
5:38 am
like. and it would also be much better for national security. >> outgoing canadian prime minister justin trudeau wrote on twitter, quote, there isn't a snowball's chance in #### that canada would become part of the united states. there are a number of things that would need to happen for the u.s. to add more states or territories as well. >> our time is now. 537 san francisco's new mayor takes office today. several events are scheduled, starting with mayor elect daniel lurie volunteering this morning at saint anthony's. now he'll be sworn in at a ticketed event at civic center plaza. after that ceremony at 1130. lurie will celebrate in chinatown. 70 high school students will perform a lion dance in front of the far east restaurant on grand avenue to greet the new mayor as he arrives to attend the banquet inside. >> it would be a great royal welcome to welcome into the community because he's willing to have it in our community.
5:39 am
>> to us, it means a great start for a new administration in san francisco and new beginnings and a really auspicious moment for san francisco. >> now, along grant avenue, dozens of union workers have set up a stage for the live performances that will be held as part of the chinatown night market. >> outgoing san francisco mayor london breed announced a drop in crime on her last day in office. city leaders say the city's crime rates are at a 20 year low. the police department reports property crime is down 31% from 2023. violent crime is down 14%. homicides are at a 60 year low, and car break-ins were cut in half compared to last year. breed says the drop is due to a strong district attorney, new state and local laws and implementing new technology. >> we have what we need to be a successful city, and i feel very strongly and proud that i've laid the groundwork for what has
5:40 am
