7:45 pm
wednesday urging him not to drop out. >> having someone like barbara lee in the race, it definitely brings more attention. she brings name recognition, but at the end of the day, we've got to solve oakland's problems. for oaklanders, it's not about, say, what may have happened in the halls of congress in d.c, where you're going back and forth on national and global issues. democrats versus republicans. >> and i think what's important for people to know is that i run campaigns based on the issues. no personal attacks. i don't run based on any kind of negativity. >> the oakland city clerk says so far, there are 16 candidates who have now filed paperwork for the april 15th special election reporting from oakland, jana katsuyama, ktvu, fox two news. >> back now to our weather. strong wind gusts overnight, knocked down trees, took out power lines and temporarily shut down part of the freeway in the

east bay. crews were removing what was left of a 40 foot tree that came down in front of homes in alameda. no one was hurt, but the homeowners say that both of his vehicles were damaged. the wind also caused some widespread power outages in alameda. also, a pine tree came down onto the street near a home and parked cars. >> it was pretty wild, like things were moving around in the backyard, like just patio furniture sliding around, and you could just really hear it whipping around, you know? and we just kind of hunkered down and hoped for the best and really didn't, didn't notice anything when we went to bed and woke up to this, the wind was really, really tremendously strong. >> i don't think we've been here for 27 years, and i don't think i've ever heard it that strong. >> overnight in oakland, the wind caused problems on highway 13 just before 3:00. trees came down, blocking the southbound lanes of the highway at redwood road. by 4:00 this morning, the freeway was cleared. all right, let's bring in ktvu

meteorologist roberta gonzalez. now, roberta. strong winds here. but you said our saving grace has been rain. >> absolutely. we've had the abundance of rain. we're well above normal for this time of the year, where southern california hasn't seen any rain in about 243 days. i'm talking back on may 5th. measurable precipitation 16/100 of an inch. so that's 4% of normal. and that's a big problem. you couple that up with the winds. it's a recipe for disaster. and that's what's happening right now. catastrophic conditions in southern california. these aren't our strongest winds, but these are some of the reporting stations nearly 70 mile per hour winds atop mount saint helena this morning. other notable numbers. how about grizzly peak, 60 mile per hour winds in pleasanton, the sonoma ridge clocked a 54 mile per hour wind. there you have fairfield, sfo and livermore with 22 mile per hour winds. meanwhile, the winds ushered in some warmer conditions. today, it's indicative of an offshore push. we did have 74 degrees in redwood city, 70 in santa rosa.

live weather camera not a cloud in the sky right now, but we will notice the formation of some fog over here and over there into the overnight hours as well as the delta. winds are calm right now. will be breezy tomorrow afternoon with that offshore. push northeasterly up to 20mph area of low pressure through some clouds into seattle today. but that high there, that low there. that's what's causing the strong santa ana conditions. and the setup for our local winds. you get the friction. you have the winds in a counterclockwise fashion around the center of the area of low pressure. then you have the winds and a clockwise position around the high together. again friction occurs. therefore you get those strong winds and tomorrow afternoon the winds begin to pick up again in southern california. high wind warning has now allowed to expire. would not be surprised if it does become a high wind advisory tomorrow afternoon. red flag warning in effect, it's been extended now until friday
