coach, but saleh appears to be the frontrunner here for this position. more interviews are planned in the coming days. meantime, the raiders are looking for a fresh start. general manager tom telesco has been fired two days after head coach antonio pierce was let go. telesco was hired by the raiders less than a year ago. before that, he spent a decade with the l.a. chargers. the raiders next general manager will have the number six pick in the draft to work with. that wraps things up for sports tonight. our 11:00 news with mike starts now. >> the 11:00 news on ktvu. fox two starts now. >> and good evening once again everyone. i'm mike mibach. right to our top story tonight at 11. the massive firefight in southern california where the death toll is rising in los angeles county and thousands of structures have been destroyed or damaged. late this afternoon, another fire started near calabasas, right there on the edge of the san fernando valley. the kenneth fire has burned 960
11:01 pm
acres tonight, but firefighters have stopped forward progress. this one is at 35% containment tonight. the fire, is being investigated as arson and a suspect has been detained. we're going to hear from our crew at the scene in just a few minutes. here is the latest on all the wildfires in l.a. county. just a couple of hours ago, the los angeles county coroner's office confirming the death toll is now at ten. officials say more than 10,000 structures have been destroyed or damaged. tonight, the palisades fire is 6% contained. the eaton fire in the area of pasadena has burned more than 13,000 acres. it is 0% contained. and the hurst fire near sylmar is now more than 700 acres. it is 37% contained tonight. that is good news there. more firefighters in the bay area really across the west coast, are headed to los angeles to join in the firefight. the strike teams are arriving from every corner of the bay area. san mateo county actually has deployed more than 150 firefighters, along with about
11:02 pm
two dozen engines and a drone to help in the firefight. san francisco has sent more than 30 fire personnel to the palisades and eaton fires. and tonight in all, there are about 7500 firefighters helping to gain control of these wildfires. now, these fires raising questions for all californians about the challenges of getting affordable fire coverage in the future. as more insurance companies drop homeowners coverage and refuse to sign new policies. the department of insurance says the la fires will not impact new rules that allow insurance companies to use new tools to better assess future fire risk, as they set premium prices and coverage, rather than relying only on historical data. and back now to that kenneth fire. it started at 230 this afternoon in the west hills and calabasas areas. tonight. police are investigating this specific fire as arson. one person has been detained, and it's all due to the help of neighbors who decided to take matters into their own hands. ktvu zac sos is
11:03 pm
on the ground in woodland hills. hearing from some residents the moment they saw the suspected arsonist. >> just a really frightening scene here. earlier in the community of woodland hills, we are at the intersection of arcos and galindo here in woodland hills, about five miles from the kenneth fire. as the crow flies earlier today, neighbors saying they saw someone riding around on their bicycle with a blowtorch. a giant blowtorch apparently stopping at various houses trying to light garbage cans filled with tree debris on fire, and moving on to an old christmas tree that was left out trying to light that on fire. neighbors. given all of the fires that have been happening in this community, understandably concerned. that is when they decided to step in. now you are probably looking at video of these neighbors stepping in. we are blurring the
11:04 pm
face of the suspect. that is because this person has not officially been connected to the kenneth fire by the lapd. the lapd has, though, arrested this person of suspected arson in this neighborhood. a police source, though, has told us that they believe this suspect is connected to the kenneth fire. that is what we've been told. so these neighbors stepping in, detaining this person, using zip ties. take a listen. >> yeah. you see somebody walking down the street with a blowtorch in their hand? it's kind of a weird thing when we're right in the middle of two fairly large fires right here. >> so, you guys, i understand you zip tied him, is that. yeah. this gentleman, i understand he seemed sort of agitated. can you describe that? >> i mean, it seemed like maybe he was on something or something. he was very like, i can't stop, i can't stop, i'm not putting this down. i'm doing this and very focused on moving forward with the blowtorch. and we're like, we can't be doing
11:05 pm
that right now. >> yeah, just some really brave actions of those neighbors stepping in here within minutes, police arriving neighbors in this community of woodland hills who say this is generally a very quiet community, describing the police response as the largest they have ever seen here. you know, these neighbors potentially stopping something that could have turned out far worse. back to you. >> and in los angeles, we are now getting a closer look at entire neighborhoods that have been leveled. thousands of homes destroyed. ktvu bailey o'carroll joins us tonight here in studio bailey. some residents starting to get a look at what is left of those neighborhoods. >> hey, mike. yeah, the fires, of course, are still burning out of control tonight. earlier today, you mentioned some of those people started to go home to take a look at the destruction that really looks like something out of a hollywood movie. unfortunately, it is now the reality of utter
11:06 pm
destruction. nearly the entire pacific palisades community wiped out by the palisades fire, which authorities confirmed has killed two people. the fire still burning out of control, just one of the many actively burning in l.a. county. >> we are not through this by any means. we keep seeing these fires pop up in different places. we may see more before this is over. >> a new fire sparking this afternoon. the kenneth fire burning near the woodland hills in calabasas. >> at the rate of spread and the density of the communities in this area, it is serious. >> a scary situation now trending in the right direction thanks to a strong attack in the air and on the ground. crews have stopped forward progress, but their work is not done. the still working to get the eaton fire in altadena under control. at least five people have died in that fire and it's burned more than 5000 structures. for the first time, some residents were able to return to their
11:07 pm
homes, many faced with their worst fear. >> i also went back to. make sure my sister got out and which she actually didn't, which makes it even harder. >> zaire calvin and his neighbor and friend philip solano both trying to cope with their losses. >> we've lost everything. our home, two homes like, didn't have time to get everything out of the house. >> the suffering is widespread and according to officials, it's not over as winds are expected to pick up again. >> i want to be very clear here as well. we are still under red flag warning and senator adam schiff with a stern warning to those in evacuation zones. >> if you're told to evacuate, then get the #### out. you might think you can outrun a fire. you are not going to outrun these fires. >> crews will continue to work through the night to get hopefully some of those big
11:08 pm
fires, even just a little more under control. and of course, the big fear is those winds kicking back up tonight. >> mike bailey o'carroll with us tonight here in studio bailey thank you. president biden now promising the full support of the federal government. he says that they will pay 100% for the debris removal and firefighting needs for the next 180 days. >> we are with you. we're not going anywhere. to the firefighters and first responders, you are heroes. >> also, governor newsom issued an executive order to help people who lost their jobs after businesses have been destroyed. the executive order eliminates a one week waiting period for unemployment insurance applicants. the l.a. county office of emergency management says it made a mistake today when it sent out an alert to cell phones telling people to evacuate. now, that alert was intended only for the evacuation zone of the kenneth fire that started up this afternoon. but instead, the alert went out to
11:09 pm
the entire county. >> the office of emergency management and the county's emergency operations center took immediate action to issue a cancellation, and then also issue a second wireless emergency alert to correct the misinformation from the malfunction. >> los angeles county supervisor says the mistake was a result of a technical error. all right, let's bring in our meteorologist, roberto gonzalez. it has been a battle for those firefighters down south who, by the way, have been doing a great job protecting and saving what they can. >> roberto. yes, they have an extremely overworked at this particular time because that new blaze, as you were alluding to, mike the kenneth fire, it did break out at 334 this afternoon. let's take a look at the very latest conditions. the temperature has been very mild at 67 degrees. the relative humidity is very dry at 12%. and that's a typical off shore push right now. northeasterly winds at eight. and look at those gusts now 26mph. now we head to
11:10 pm
the foothills here in the altadena area 60 degrees there. humidity 16%. the winds are lighter and then we head more towards the ocean. pacific palisades. the relative humidity is up a bit at 22%. and that's because they're closer to the proximity of the ocean. but again, it's an offshore push. and these winds will continue to fluctuate. and this is why we still have a red flag warning in effect for southern california until 6:00 tomorrow night. high wind warning in effect until 2 p.m. tomorrow afternoon. in addition to that, an advisory until 2:00 in the afternoon. i thought i would break it down the highlighted areas in blue. that's where we have the wind advisory, the highlighted areas in red. that is where we will experience gusts up to 50 and 70mph. this is interesting. this is the plume. this is the smoke forecast. and we will see a bit of an onshore push tomorrow evening. and this smoke will
11:11 pm
trail off all the way into kern county, all the way into fresno, and perhaps even make it into the monterey bay area. mike, we're going to talk more about that. that's coming up later in this broadcast. >> all right, roberta, we'll see you soon. thank you. a woman in sacramento is jumping in to help people affected by the fires down south. the donations started to filter in just hours after patti martin posted a call for donations on social media. now, martin said after seeing the enormity of the destruction caused by those wildfires, she just could not sit still and wanted to help out. martin explains her motivation to support his personal. >> i've never been impacted, thankfully, but in 2015, when the butte fire happened in calaveras county, a friend of mine asked me to help and i've been doing it ever since. with all the all the fires in northern california. >> the leader of the california wildfire support group, katie hepler, met martin after heppner's parents lost everything in that butte fire in
11:12 pm
2015. she says martin has become a pivotal member of what she calls the california fire family. well, the family of a cal football player lost everything in the eaton fire. and tonight a gofundme has been launched. kamden jones is a freshman tight end at cal. his family and their dog were able to safely evacuate, but the eaton fire burned their home in altadena. the fundraiser says the jones family lost all their belongings and all of camden jones's football mementos. his sister's wedding presents are also gone since they were being stored there at the family home. we are closely monitoring the developments of those wildfires across southern california. you can keep track of all the coverage on the fox local app, available to download for free on your phone and smart tv. still to come at 11 tonight. residents calling on oakland city leaders after growing concerns of spot fires in their neighborhood. as also more crews from california and across the west coast joining in on the firefight in los angeles county in tonight's west coast rap,
