santa ana winds expected to return in just days as well. coming up. >> this is ktvu, fox two news at 730. >> hi, everyone, and good evening. i'm frank mallicoat. crews battling wildfires all across southern california are getting a temporary, much needed break from the strong wind gusts that fueled flames earlier this week. let's take a live look at the palisades fire still burning tonight. as you can see, the death toll from the eaton and the palisades. palisades fire is now up to 11. more than 12,000 homes and structures have been destroyed. more than 39,000 acres charred. california's governor, gavin newsom, has asked for an investigation into why some fire hydrants ran dry during the height of this week's fire. ktvu is jesse gary has the very latest out of southern california. >> friday. firefighters, aided by favorable winds, poured everything into efforts to increase containment of flames,

burning several areas of the southland. >> due to the favorable overnight weather conditions. and the diligent. and i'll focus on the diligent work and effort and commitment of our first responders, we can report that the palisades fire is now 8% contained. >> forward progress has been stopped on the kenneth fire and other pockets of flames, and officials say smaller fires were doused before they could grow into the next major problem. >> lafd also responded to and extinguished fires in pacoima, hollywood, studio city and more. >> the bay area continues, sending first responders south to help in the firefight. oakland's fire chief says his teams are working seamlessly with the lafd. >> it is a very coordinated attack, so they're asked to do a specific task as a group. they move together, they do what needs to be done, and then they'll give additional orders and they'll move as a group to the to wherever else they'll need it. >> marin county, also supplementing its presence on the front lines. grand groneman took an aerial tour friday morning to better assess

obstacles. >> the challenges are definitely greater when it comes to an incident outside of our primary area, but we're well accustomed to it. we're very used to working with these partners around the state and trying to achieve the mission that that we've set out to do. >> as crews push to contain the flames, a political fire is raging around l.a. mayor karen bass. critics point to fire budget reductions, which were soon after restored as a contributing factor for the infernos. they say the administration should shoulder the blame. >> obviously, any budget cut is going to impact our ability to provide service. that's that's at this point, that is a ground truth. >> national guard units are now assisting local police patrols in cities such as pasadena, azusa, santa monica, arcadia and los angeles to keep evacuated areas safe. >> we're not doing this to inconvenience anybody. we're doing it to protect the structures, the houses that

people have left. if somebody is caught doing this, they are not going to get cited and released. they're going to get booked. we are not screwing around with this. >> eventually we will get to the causes of those fires. and that part. the da's office will be working with law enforcement to go after anyone who's guilty of the crime of arson. >> jesse gary, ktvu, fox two news. >> today, fema officials are addressing concerns surrounding the water system in l.a. county. fema administrator deanne criswell says firefighting resources were overwhelmed by the enormity of the fires this week. she says there was a large strain on the overall system and it does take time to regenerate. criswell also warning against ongoing dangers, saying winds will be picking up again as we head into the weekend. >> there was multiple firefighting resources that were utilizing and putting, using the water system to put out these fires, and it put a strain on the system, and it takes time for that system to then regenerate. but the specifics on

it, i really just want to make sure that you talk with them. as we heard from the los angeles city fire chief yesterday, they have they plan for this. they have other resources available with water tenders. and now we have the ability to fly the aircraft into these communities to help put that fire out. >> president biden, meanwhile, as well as vice president harris, met virtually today from the oval office with governor newsom and l.a. mayor karen bass. president says there is still a long way to go, but california will have all the resources needed to fight the fires and help survivors scope the scale and the erratic movements of these fires is truly unprecedented. >> i mean, it's truly unprecedented. and but day after day, these firefighters have been pulling 24 hour shifts, rushing into the flames with hurricane force winds as well, to rescue people, to evacuate neighborhoods, to put these fires out.

>> 440 california national guard members have now been deployed. they are helping with traffic control and securing the fire zones. all of this comes after 20 people were arrested for looting. l.a. county sheriff's department is now enforcing a mandatory curfew in the fire area from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. let's bring in ktvu meteorologist now. mark tamayo is tracking winds expected to challenge firefighters over the next several days. he's also got our forecast here in the bay area. mark. >> hi there. frank. yeah, a welcome break right now. and the winds will definitely pick up in southern california as we move into saturday afternoon saturday night. so that's the next wind event for the fire crews down there showing you the current conditions down in southern california. it's nice to show you a calm wind out toward lax and single digits out toward burbank and santa ana and ontario. now the fire weather watch. this begins saturday afternoon into saturday evening. excuse me, into sunday afternoon, and this will likely be a red flag fire warning. so winds could be gusting to over 40 miles an hour and up in the

mountains, maybe some gusts approaching 60 to 70 miles an hour. showing you this the wind forecast model. once again the headline tonight into tomorrow morning. somewhat of a break. but look what happens throughout the day on saturday. those winds do pick up. you can see the malibu hillside here. this is saturday 6 p.m. and then late saturday and into sunday. definitely. those winds are a big factor. so this will be a noticeable uptick in those wind speeds into a sunday morning and then backing off a bit. in fact, a change in the wind flow off the ocean that will be later in the day on sunday and unfortunately, possibly another stronger wind event that could be monday and into tuesday. so the winds are not going away. we just have a short term break right now in southern california. now we're talking about some wind here in the bay area. lots of sunshine for your saturday and sunday. our dry stretch continues and a wind advisory begins at midnight all the way until 10:00 sunday morning for the north bay hills out towards solano county and the higher, higher elevations of the east bay and the santa cruz

mountains. winds could be over 40 miles an hour moving in from the north. here's a satellite where you can see some high clouds moving into northern california. we also have some low clouds near portions of our coastline right now. a current look at the wind speeds right now. not too bad, but these numbers will be going up into your saturday forecast. sfo a westerly breeze at about 13 miles an hour and current numbers most areas in the 50s. here is our live camera looking out toward the golden gate bridge. so a chilly morning. definitely want to bundle up. temperatures in the 30s and the 40s. and here's a look at the overall weather pattern. this guy will be the source of those winds here in the bay area for your saturday. and this eventually will produce those stronger winds in southern california by saturday night and into sunday. so once again just be prepared for some, maybe some blustery conditions out there throughout the day. on your saturday, fairfield could have winds over 30 miles an hour, so it will not be a calm, tranquil day here in the bay area. the wind, the winds definitely picking up with the winds focused in the higher elevations of the area. highs for tomorrow will be in the 60s. lots of

sunshine out there. not as warm as it has been, but still a mild afternoon. and here's a look ahead. your five day forecast. and we could be talking about some stronger winds as well again into early next week. and frank, i did not talk about any rain at all in our forecast. that dry weather stretch will continue over the next five days. >> yeah, it's been a while, especially down in southern california. mark. thank you sir. coming up, staff from the san francisco spca. they are on their way down to southern california next week to relieve overcrowded animal shelters in los angeles. shelter officials say they've been bringing back animals to the bay area in order to make room for those animals displaced by the wildfires. however, the san francisco spca says its shelter. well, it's also overflowing currently with more than 50 puppies right now. and to help make room for the new animals, sf spca is offering free puppy adoptions and muttville senior dog rescue is also stepping up to help animals displaced by the fires. the shelter in san francisco says

owners mike and dolly perdomo's, asked their daughter to speak with us about the family's loss and her parents. >> my father is an immigrant who came here with $1 in his pocket and mom, she's very sad. my mom was a stay at home mom for years. the loss. this is my childhood home that i was born in and lived in until i started college. and then in college, i moved in with my grandmother and lived in that house for quite a few years. it's like watching your childhood burn down a decade ago. >> her parents house was burned down from illegal fireworks, but the family rebuilt. >> so this was their new rebuilt dream house. and my mom had bought all this lovely furniture and that's all gone. >> also lost her grandparents nearby home. >> both houses are burned. everything is burned. they got out only with their cats and photo albums. >> also lost the town she grew up in. it was idyllic. >> it was so safe. my parents never locked their doors. we would skateboard barefoot and we

could walk down to the beach. i spent years walking up to that little town and the community theater, and i had friends that performed there, and i, i got i studied at that starbucks there for years, and it was a wonderful childhood. >> the biggest worry going forward. the deep regret her mom and dad have for the loss of the long saved personal mementos, baby pictures and furniture. in reality, the truly important things that can never, ever be recovered. >> i think that's that's the saddest thing, because that's irreplaceable. >> now, it's a fact that in these big fires, that what will happen is a number of people will choose not to rebuild, and they'll simply move away, and part of the community will indeed die until other people over many years come in to refill that. but this family says they are determined. what they are going to do is rebuild both those houses. tom baker,

bay area this morning. usgs reported a magnitude 3.7 earthquake at 7 a.m, followed by a 3.0 quake just before 11. both quakes hitting three miles northwest of the san francisco zoo. no damage or injuries have been reported, but people people certainly felt the shaking.

>> i was in bed at home and i felt like two seconds of shaking, and it felt like the whole place was shaking. >> i was also already awake and like christina said, i actually messaged her and a couple other friends. we had all felt it. as someone who just moved here, it was. it was my first earthquake, so it was definitely a little bit like, i don't know, scary. >> reports of shaking came from as far away as contra costa county and sonoma county. first case of the bird flu in person has been detected in san francisco. san francisco's public health department says the patient was a child, and they have already fully recovered after experiencing fevers and pinkeye. risk to the public remains very low. that's according to the department of human infections of bird flu are very rare, and there is currently no evidence of person to person transmission. the department is encouraging people to avoid contact with dead or sick birds, especially wild birds or any poultry. the

oakland police commission is considering whether to loosen the city's police pursuit policy. as it stands now, city officers cannot chase suspects for things like sideshows, reckless driving and burglaries, and other property crimes. newly elected oakland city council member ken houston says the city needs to combat an image of lawlessness by allowing officers to catch criminals who flee if they have the option. >> and we have police officers that are trained, highly trained people make mistakes, but they are highly trained, right? they'll make a sound judgment. >> critics, though, say the rule should stay in place, arguing the more you chase, the more you're putting lives at risk. residents will have the chance to weigh in on wednesday during a town hall meeting. former east bay congresswoman barbara lee made it very clear today that she is running for oakland mayor to bring a sense of unity to the city. lee spoke with ktvu

political reporter greg lee for her first sit down interview since filing her paperwork to run for the office. she acknowledged the city has challenges, but she said that oaklanders have always come together to face them. when asked about the city's budget deficit, she said she would look for ways to cut waste. >> we have to look at all of the issues around public safety because public safety, yes, is a top priority. we have to look at efficiencies within the budget, and we have to make sure that people feel good about their jobs and make sure that they know that they have a mayor that's going to fight for them to make sure that their jobs are secure, but also make sure that we have a budget that is going to reflect a budget that is based on values, but also based on fiscal responsibility. >> we asked lee about the fire stations that were closed temporarily, both of them, and she said she would like to see them both reopen. up next, dining on the sf ferry, their menu just got bigger and a
