dry air and dry vegetation, will keep the fire threat. in los angeles county high. >> the palisades fire, the largest of all of these incidents, has burned in the western part of los angeles, and tonight concerns growing as it moves closer east to the heart of the city. good evening. on this saturday, i'm cristina rendon. the los angeles county coroner confirms 16 people have now died as a result of the multiple fires burning in the area. the palisades fire has grown to more than 23,000 acres and is 11% contained. the eaton fire, burning in altadena and pasadena, is now just over 14,000 acres with 15% containment. more than 150,000 people have had to evacuate their homes, and more than 10,000 structures have been damaged or destroyed. here's a look now at a map of these fires. that bright orange area isll of the land tt is burned. the areas that you see in red are under mandatory evacuation orders.nd the yellow areas on the outer edge are under evacuation warnings.
10:02 pm
fire officials are now keeping a close eye on the potential for shifting winds in the palisades fire. today marks the first time communities eastth 405 freeway have been uer evacuation wning these include heavily populated neighborhoods such as brentwood and bel air. tonight, officials gave an update on these incidents. >> we have been using all these aircraft on these fires these last couple of days. >> the images paint a picture of the uphill battle on the ground and in the air in los angeles county. fire crews working to get a handle on multiple fires. the biggest, the palisades fire, which broke out in an area that hadn't received any measurable rain since april of last year. officials tracking another round of santa ana winds. >> this upcoming extended round of santa ana winds is not going to be anywhere near as strong as we saw when this event broke out. we're going to be as strong, maybe be about like 6,070% of the strength of this event that led up to this fire. >> cal fire estimates hundreds
10:03 pm
of the structures destroyed are homes stretching from pacific palisades west to malibu. >> malibu has lost approximately one third of its eastern edge of the city. >> in altadena, the eaton fire is burning in dry, steep hillsides. though the fire did not grow substantially saturday. >> i want to just highlight this. this square box right here is a square mile. so it's a massive, massive area that we're talking about here. that's residential community. it's not wildland. it's a residence. and these are people's houses. so huge, huge herculean task to get through all this. down here. we have a ton of work. >> and in areas that have already burned, officials have put a curfew in place to prevent looting. >> if you are coming, thinking of coming to pasadena and or altadena for the purpose of looting, know this the passing of police department and the l.a. county sheriffs will be there to meet you. >> the warning to businesses don't price gouge. >> this is not who we are. we should not be engaged in price
10:04 pm
gouging, whether it's groceries or rent. we are very serious about this, with more strong winds on the way. >> firefighters from across the country are ready and welcoming. more help. >> we're increasing resources, as director ward said, to over 14,001st responders, over 1219 fire engines across california, and our partners in the western states, including. oregon, washington, nevada, arizona, new mexico, texas and montana, just to name a few. and we continue to get support across the states and internationally. >> the winds do continue to be a concern, so we'll bring in ktvu meteorologist mark tamayo a new red flag warning, though the winds shouldn't be as strong, not as strong as the peak event last tuesday. >> but what is concerning
10:05 pm
christina on the palisades fire today? the winds actually were not too bad, but there's still a lot of active fire behavior. so yeah, that's the headline. winds are ramping up right now. and another red flag warning in place. so taking a look at the fire zones, the fire perimeters, you can see the eaton fire and also the palisades fire closer to the coastline and will come in closer right now and show you some of the wind reports in southern california. and the overall trend, the overall tendency for tonight, these values will be increasing. one site there you see santa ana gusting to 26 miles an hour. we'll show you some more sites here. as you can see, closer to the eaton fire zone, winds gusting to 24 miles an hour. as we come in closer, take a look at these sensors right now. looks like bel air. about six miles an hour and lax at about five miles an hour. but as i mentioned, we are expecting those winds to pick up. so a red flag warning is in place right now. and it's a long duration event until 6 p.m. on wednesday. now the winds will pick up. they'll back off. they'll pick up again. so increasing winds tonight into sunday morning and then possibly another round of
10:06 pm
stronger winds late monday and into tuesday. so all these areas in red, we have a red flag warning in place right on through a good portion of wednesday. gusts could be approaching 35 to 50 miles an hour in the mountains, the highest peaks we could have winds topping 60, maybe approaching 70 miles an hour. here's a look at the forecast model. and you can see these. at least these projections give you a general idea of what could be happening. this is tomorrow morning, 7:00. those those winds definitely ramping up. this will be a big challenge for the fire crews. the winds do back off though later in the afternoon. so that is a positive sign. in fact the change in the wind flow. and then once again into monday morning that breaks somewhat continues. it's still a challenge. and then the winds expected to pick up once again late monday and into tuesday. so that's why that red flag warning is in place. as the winds back off, they pick up again. that will take some time over the next few days, but still the headline. once again, the winds a big part of the forecast and they are increasing right now in southern california. >> all right mark, thank you.
10:07 pm
we're turning now to ktvu zac sos who's been tracking the palisades fire tonight. zach, you are in pacific palisades. 23,000 acres have burned there, 11% contained. what are you seeing on the ground tonight? >> well, really, for the last 24 hours or so, the main focus here has been an area of the palisades fire known as mandeville canyon. it is just down from a neighborhood called brentwood heights. and the big concern right now, if you can look into the distance, i'm going to pan over to it. there is still a flare up there and they have forecast some higher winds tonight. it certainly has picked up over the evening, not like the winds that we saw earlier in the week, but still certainly a pick up from the last 24 hours or so. and that has proven to make this a bit more challenging for these crews. the concern at the bottom of this canyon at the bottom of mandeville canyon, they have some homes down there. and then
10:08 pm
on the other side of the canyon that is unspent fuel, that is brush that is not burned. they do not want any of these embers to go to the other side of the hill and then perhaps go over to another community. they have done a really good job where i'm standing from preventing this fire from creeping upwards, but certainly a very nerve wracking day for people who live where i'm standing in the brentwood heights neighborhood, they've been monitoring this for the last 24 hours, concerned that it could creep up right to their homes. take a listen. >> i spent all night out here sitting, constantly checking to watch this fire come down the hill and approach this area. it was just creeping down here all night. they were waiting for it. i think the biggest concern is that getting into any fresh fuel that hasn't burned could create a new problem again. >> so to make sure that it does not creep into new fuel, they have continued for the last few
10:09 pm
hours to do these airdrops by chopper onto this flare up. they also have hand crews down below me crisscrossing this hillside, which i got to tell you is pretty treacherous terrain. they're crisscrossing it, making sure that there are no embers there as well. it will be a very, very long night for these crews. once again. back to you, christina. >> yeah, i know it's kind of hard to even make out what you're zoomed into there. i can only assume it's crews that are up in the canyon trying to get a handle on this. and i also know this area is under a curfew right now in your area, from what you've seen, are people respecting that curfew and staying out of these zones? >> yeah. i mean, beyond the fact that there's a curfew, this is a zone that has been evacuated, so it's a bit of a ghost town. aside from a few people that decided to stay behind. and mostly this place is really just
10:10 pm
overrun with fire crews monitoring this canyon from literally every angle. >> i know authorities did say that they have paused people going in as an escort, but they are doing some welfare checks in that area. and of course, the concern is also the looters that have gone in there and been arrested as well. okay. zach soares live for us tonight in pacific palisades. zach, thank you for that. fire crews have made good progress on other small fires. the kenneth fire that has burned around 1000 acres near the los angeles border and ventura county border. it broke out in the west hills area thursday afternoon. the latest update shows the fire is 90% contained. all evacuations have been lifted. the hurst fire, near sylmar in the northern edge of the san fernando valley, has burned nearly 800 acres and is now 76% contained. governor gavin newsom says a lot of misinformation has been spread concerning the fires. today, he announced a new website has been launched giving the public access to accurate information about these incidents. it's called

10:12 pm
bill comes due for california, some conservatives say we want to see some offsets. >> absolutely. >> congress just spent $100 billion on fema after last fall's double hurricanes. this price tag could be even more staggering. burchett is skeptical that fema is up to the task. he doubts that california victims will ever see what they're owed after this disaster. some republicans take aim at liberals who run much of california. other lawmakers say california climate change policies forced insurers to drop fire coverage for homeowners. >> it caused the companies to flee the state. and the people that made those policy decisions have to be held accountable, too. >> but democrats rebuke criticism of california's leaders. >> i think that's all honestly just ridiculous. i think what's most important is that i think our governor is on the ground doing a great job managing the response. i don't think that we should be putting blame on anyone. >> still, some democrats question the local response. >> why didn't they have water? is it negligence, or is it just the fact that so many fires were
10:13 pm
breaking out all over the city, in so many different areas, that it was being the system was being pushed to capacity and got overwhelmed? >> it will take months to assess the cost of the fires. congress must likely foot the bill and boost fema during the next round of spending, due in mid-march. on capitol hill. chad pergram, fox news. >> we are gearing up to take in several cats and dogs that are already adoptable so they they can make space for fire victims. >> people across the bay area are doing their part to help victims of those fires in los angeles. how a local organization is stepping up to take in animals in need of temporary homes. and there are numerous ways to send supplies to people down in la. the effort underway in the east bay that's already collected hundreds of pounds of
