here coming to work every day to serve each of you. >> the firefight in southern california, continuing for almost a week straight. tonight, the death toll rises and the fundraising efforts are in full force. tonight, the firefight becomes critical as firefighters race to gain the upper hand before the region gets hit with more wind. hello again. >> i'm betty yu and i'm mike mibach. right to the very latest. and the death toll increasing once again today. tonight, the los angeles county coroner confirming 24 people have died in the fires. the palisades fire has burned more than 23,000 acres. it is 13% contained. the eaton fire, burning in altadena and pasadena, now at 14,000 acres with 27% containment. all of these fires in the last week have destroyed more than 12,000 structures, combining to burn an area larger than the city of san francisco. firefighters tonight bracing for those. santa ana winds once again, starting as early as tomorrow. the national

weather service has issued a red flag warning for much of the area. and tonight, officials giving an update on the preparations in place ahead of the incoming wind that could fuel the already destructive fires. >> we have the expectation of widespread critical fire weather conditions across the fire next couple days. that means north northeast winds gusting anywhere from 35 to 55mph, and those winds will probably be strongest on tuesday morning. >> cal fire says it will use strike teams with dozers to hold off any potential new fires that could emerge. there are still more than 100,000 people who remain evacuated, and when they are finally all allowed back, many will return to rubble. tonight, some residents were able to return to see what was left of their homes. >> ktvu zac sos has been in los angeles county the past few days. zach, you heard from one woman who said she lost it all? >> yeah. that's right. her name is carol joseph. tonight, she

attended a community meeting for the eaton fire. this is where her home stood. as you can see, there is nothing left. tonight she was eager to hear an update. as hundreds packed a gymnasium at pasadena city college for an update on the eaton fire. sunday. [music] understandable frustration voiced by those who lost everything. >> if we're going to do that, we're going to cut the meeting short. >> but amid the crowd, one voice filled with a surprising amount of optimism. >> i'll be okay. in many ways, i'm very lucky. >> carol joseph, a lifelong resident of altadena. she's lived here since she was 11. feeling lucky to be alive and lucky for the support of her family despite only having a suitcase in hand to show for a life's worth of possessions. >> you just have to be strong. have faith. it's just stuff. >> tuesday night, carol sitting at home with her daughter as the

eaton fire began to balloon. >> she said, mom, we've got to leave. >> surrounded by flames, the family escaping with likely minutes to spare. >> oh my goodness. >> the next day, carol's daughter able to make her way back to her home on las flores drive. >> she said, it's all gone. i had a little cottage. house gone. just everything is gone. and all this standing is the fireplace. every house on the block is gone. except for one. >> despite her immense loss, carol, a retired nurse now thinking of her neighbors. >> i just love helping people. i like to calm them down, and that gives me a lot of spiritual faith. >> all that she wants for herself. >> if they keep their word and help us, i'm going to rebuild. >> at the meeting, l.a. county public works promising to help homeowners devastated by the fire. clearing clean their lots so new foundations can be laid

down. >> maybe this is just a new journey for me. >> carol already dreaming of returning to the yard she cherished. >> i loved my house. i mean, just before the fire. every evening i go outside because there are lots of trees. and i had owls this year for the first time. >> and hoping the community that made altadena so special comes back to. >> i hope that i see that again, and that the friendliness of people, the kindness of people. i hope that does not change. >> and remarkably, i just heard an owl off in the distance. sounds like they have returned. carol right now staying with her daughters, she her home. it was insured, but she knows it will be a long and costly process to rebuild. still, as you heard there, she wants to stay right here in altadena. >> mike, betty and zach, you know you've been there now nearly a week. and i'm curious, when you look back at your coverage, was there a moment that stood out the most? i'm

sure there's many of them, but one that that you'll definitely bring home with you. >> you know, i thought it would be the night that i arrived when the fire was still going. but what really stood out was the following day and just seeing the devastation, meeting with some of the families and seeing some return to a home still intact and just next door, literally everything gone. >> zac sos we really appreciate all of your great reporting down there and we wish you a safe trip back home. zac sos, thanks so much for your report. well, firefighters are making progress in their battle against the two smaller fires in the l.a. area. cal fire says the kenneth fire is now 100% contained after burning more than 1000 acres in los angeles and ventura counties. all evacuations have been lifted in that fire. evacuation orders have also been lifted in the hearst fire. it burned about 800 acres near

sylmar, in the northern edge of the san fernando valley. cal fire says it's up to 95% contained. the l.a. times is reporting fire agencies are investigating whether a downed power line may have caused that fire. southern california edison said friday a downed conductor was found near the fire, but added that it's unclear if it happened before or after the fire started. >> governor newsom has signed an executive order to help rebuild homes and businesses destroyed by the fires in southern california. this executive order suspends permitting and review requirements under the state's environmental quality act and the california coastal act. the goal here is to get these rebuilding projects underway a lot quicker. his order also aims to curb price gouging on building materials and other construction services. the governor says more will be done to help those affected by the fires. >> part of that is prepping the site, getting all the debris removal done, dealing with the hazardous waste. getting that done as quickly as possible. getting those contracts in

order. at the same time, simultaneously getting the individual assistance, the small business loans and the like. >> early estimates have damage costs totaling more than $150 billion. >> the red cross is among many relief organizations on the ground in southern california working to provide critical support. the nonprofit said it has several hundred volunteers helping its operation, including 40 people from the bay area, with the focus on providing shelter to the fire victims. tonight, we spoke with its regional ceo, who is in downtown los angeles, at its disaster relief headquarters. >> it's a good reminder for us in the bay area, while we don't have any disasters right now, to be prepared to have that kit. to stay informed, have your evacuation plan. practice that plan. >> the red cross says now is also a good time to make sure your smoke alarms are working. the organization installs free smoke alarms as part of its sound the alarm program. the red cross says working smoke alarms

can cut the risk of death by half. and in the midst of the fire fight, a number of bay area businesses are stepping up to help with different acts of kindness. hello bagels in berkeley added a special huevos rancheros bagel to the menu, with all proceeds from it going to feed the streets l.a, a nonprofit getting food, water and hygiene products to people displaced by the fires in san francisco. black jet bakery is taking a similar approach, designing an i love la coconut layer cake with $50 of the $70 price tag. going to restaurants care, a relief fund for food and beverage workers. a san francisco bartender created the city of angels drink, being served at the snug paying tribute to her hometown. >> the school i went to is gone, as well as a lot of the homes of people that i grew up with that i love and care about deeply. so we're just happy to do our small part to help as much as we can.

these deadly wildfires have destroyed more than 12,000 homes as well as businesses. >> and this story begins tonight's west coast rap. forecasters are warning more strong winds are coming over the next few days. the national weather service issued red flag warnings for severe fire conditions through wednesday this week, with winds expected to reach 50 miles an hour and gusts in the mountains of up to 70 miles an hour. some areas have become accessible for residents to return and see what's left of their homes. one resident returned to her home after it was destroyed in the palisades fire. >> there's not much that i found here. all i have is like this bag, a lemon, some metallic sprinkler heads just to make my 89 year old mother feel better that i salvaged them. but i did it because it would give her hope. it would give her hope to rebuild. and it's giving me hope to rebuild. >> the rest of her neighborhood was destroyed in this fire.

tuesday marks a week since the flames took off in the palisades fire the same day, expected to be the most dangerous with high winds moving through the area this week. los angeles firefighters are on the ground in southern california among thousands of crews from other western states to help with this fire fight. >> henderson firefighters arrived on thursday only to see an entire community leveled by the firestorm. now, for many firefighters, it is nothing like they have ever seen before. >> the number of homes you see, 5 or 6 homes in a row that are destroyed, their cars just burned out throughout all of the streets. it's horrible to feel what those people lost. there is nothing left to some of those. >> the henderson firefighters are patrolling a palisades neighborhood for spot fires, working 24 hour shifts. they are also on the scene of the eaton fire. the nba games that have been postponed because of the wildfires are all set to resume

indications of rain in southern california anytime soon. the next chance for us is january 21st, so it's a ways off. here's the highs from today. yesterday we had a couple of records. today i didn't see any records, but we were above average by quite a bit. could easily gotten a record though. vallejo at 69 degrees 68, in parts of the east bay. coastal fog along the coast. and we haven't seen that in a little while. so that's something a little bit different. and then frost advisory tonight in the southern part of the bay area, southeastern part of the bay area frost advisory. temperatures down in the upper 30s. and then a wind advisory in the hills of the north bay tonight and tomorrow morning, with wind gusts to 35 or 40 miles an hour. and we can take a look at the wind model. and you can see tomorrow morning about 9 a.m, the reds. that's pretty windy. and then tomorrow afternoon lunchtime and then done. so overnight tonight through tomorrow about lunchtime will be the strongest winds again. our fuel moistures if you're worried about fires and

such are fuel moistures are much, much higher than southern california and we're doing pretty well. we wouldn't otherwise. if we didn't have those rains early on, we would be seeing fire weather advisories around, especially with the with the weather pattern that we have, which is offshore winds for us to santa ana winds, offshore winds. diablo winds. it's all the same deal. and we're getting them as well. and we're getting them tonight and tomorrow. here are the. but the rain has kind of kept us out of that dangerous, dangerous zone. these are the forecast highs for tomorrow. and then the five day forecast you'll see it checks in here with no rain. just lots of low 60s in southern california. and the bull's eye you guys through wednesday night. and you know, not much to say except you mopping those fires up is tough. and then you throw some wind on it. and that's that's what we're concerned about. remember the oakland hills fire how that went down. right. they were shutting down a fire. >> they didn't mop it up, mop it up and thought they had it. wind came up. it came back. >> wow. >> well, we'll be keeping an eye on it this week. >> thank you. bill. thanks, bill. >> well, a smoke advisory is

still in effect for most of los angeles county. the county's public health department has declared a health emergency as the devastating wildfires burning across the region for the past five days have created a serious air quality problem. medical experts say the infernos that have destroyed thousands of homes and businesses are generating a tremendous amount of smoke that contain dangerous toxins. those toxins are largely coming from the countless number of cars, appliances and furniture that have gone up in flames. at a press conference this afternoon, several officials gave an update to the eaton fire, stressing the importance of wearing an n95 mask. >> these are meant to help you, as you may go back into areas where there has been a lot of fire, or you're going back into your homes that are intact. but all of this area is covered with soot and fine ash, and it's unfortunately very toxic.

free. and to whomever. clothing, sundries, hot or cold packaged food to eat here or take to their shelters. >> warm hot dogs. anybody else want warm hot dogs? >> for volunteers a labor of love. >> they all have to eat. and what's better than some organic local fruits from the fruit trees here? >> i don't see rich or poor. i just see the need. and so people coming together, it's amazing to see just everyone from everywhere come together from the deepest depths of his heart. >> victor edgardo capella put out the most heartfelt donations toys. >> it's really important because as a kid, i didn't have any toys. and it's so nice, like having some kids, having fun. >> it all started a few days ago at the rose bowl. >> you're very welcome. >> we thought we were going to give out 500 hot dogs and, you know, call it a day. >> when word got out, it became a clarion call to pitch in. >> and what happened is the donations started pouring in. next thing we know, other food

vendors came to help. and then before we know it, it got so big, so rapidly, so big, it had to move to santa anita park in nearby arcadia. a lot of us, we come from the streets. a lot of us were homeless in l.a, and we got a second chance at life, and we're making the best of it. so it's only right to give back. >> we stopping by and looking for mainly baby diapers and kids clothes and shoes because they run out the house without their shoes. we're not rich people. we're barely scraping by, as is. you know, we're a foster house. we got six foster kids. we had to evacuate. >> stay strong and stay positive. we will survive. we all work together as a community. >> thank you very much. >> you're welcome. though this will be here through wednesday, there will be plenty of leftovers. and you can be sure they'll be going to the organizations that can make the most good of it for the people who really need it. tom vacar, ktvu, fox two news, an electronic music venue in san francisco, hosted a fundraiser for the l.a. fire response. >> this was the scene tonight at the midway in the dogpatch. there were several dj

performances and artists offering up live paintings. all proceeds from this live music event will go directly to the california fire foundation and the pasadena humane society, which is sheltering hundreds of animals. the event was thrown together in just a couple of days, and the organizer tells us tonight, successful turnout speaks to the character of the electronic community. >> there's a scene here of people that really can make change, do something, fundraise whatever it is, and look at what we have here. this is two days how everybody comes together with the urgency. and it's just a testament to how tight knit this city is. >> there were also donation boxes that were placed out for clothes and other supplies. >> the institute of contemporary art in san francisco held a supply drive to support los angeles today. one local screen printer dropped off several boxes of clothes and says she was grateful for the opportunity to give back. >> i over printed some goods for
