another bay area school district is considering closing some schools. tonight, one of the north bay's biggest cities is holding a special town hall meeting, the first of several. [music] >> from ktvu, fox two news. this is mornings on two. >> well, good morning and thank you for joining us. welcome to mornings on two. i'm dave clark. >> i'm ali rasmus. it is monday january 13th. and boy some people may have been woken up in the middle of the night by those wind gusts. steve paulson keeping track of the weather conditions here on the east bay hills. >> oakland berkeley hills, 33 to 52mph. so it's a little system clipped us here. it's got a little open wave. it will form a low off southern california. and guess what? that's going to give them another round of wind as well. so this is a really bad pattern for right now. but what are you going to do. it's just we're stuck in it. winds up to about 2530 five miles per hour. it will be a breezy, blustery day. windy for some. there is a wind advisory that's out 40s 50s

on most of the temps, although look at menlo park, mountain view and san jose. so 30s to 50s. and are you going to make it. no, you're not going to make it. but there is a wind advisory out and that takes us mainly for the north bay hills. i don't know why it's not the east bay hills, but that's not my call. so blowing in the wind and it will be a day with temperatures 60s low. clear skies yet windy. no rain in sight. temperatures 60 to 65 should cover it. all right, over to sal. i think we have something right away. >> yes, yes, we do have a crash 80 westbound near carlson. steve. they're still clearing it up. unfortunately, it was a deadly crash. that's west 80 at carlson. they're still doing an investigation. although most of the things have been cleared off the freeway. you can see traffic is going to be okay. westbound bay bridge. there was an earlier stalled big rig. that big rig has been moved, but right now, traffic is okay. as you drive into san francisco. 501 let's

get back to the headlines. thank you. >> sal. firefighters are hoping the return of the santa ana winds will not set back their work over the past week, trying to contain the devastating wildfires in southern california. reporter connor hanson live in los angeles county with the latest on how the conditions are affecting the fire fight. connor, this is not the kind of weather anyone wants to see in southern california right now. >> that's right. ali and officials are insisting that they are prepared for it. but with thousands of homes already burned to the ground like this one, you can understand why people are on edge in some of these neighboring communities. the winds are supposed to pick up later today, getting even worse tomorrow. we're talking about 50 60 mile per hour winds. and on top of that, this death toll tragically continues to rise. now, 24 people have lost their lives from these fires. >> they're still heat. you're not going to see a lot of flame activity out there. >> the scope of several major wildfires burning in southern

california is changing as the battles press on. crews are trying to bolster containment of the palisades, eton and hurst fires, focusing on extinguishing remaining hotspots before dangerous santa ana winds are expected to strengthen throughout. >> today. the national weather service issuing red flag warnings through wednesday. >> these fires started amidst conditions where the winds were gusting to levels of 80, 9100 miles an hour. >> firefighters fear elevated winds could cause thousands of already charred structures to flare up again. this comes as crews searching the burned areas are recovering more who died in the flames. >> we have resources, hand crews, engine companies out there scouring the edge. >> community members, meanwhile, are joining forces to help their neighbors in need from the creation of donation drop offs. >> you can't just sit around when people are in pain. you have to get up and do something. >> two churches opening their doors to those whose

congregations burned to the ground. >> the church is not a building. the church is the people, and the church can worship anywhere. >> and experts say in these strong winds, these embers can actually travel up to two miles from where these fires originally started, potentially sparking new ones. >> ali connor, how is that affecting the perimeters for the evacuation orders and the evacuation warnings? will those stay in effect is specifically because of the winds that are expected in the next 24 hours. >> we'll really have to wait and see. we have seen the evacuations expand a little bit on the fringes, especially of this palisades fire right now. and over the past couple of days, things have been relatively under control compared to what we saw last week, with no raging fires going on, they have more containment. but of course, that fear is once

that wind gets going, things will pick up and depending on which way the wind blows, different communities could be in a lot of risk. >> well, let's hope that doesn't happen. connor hansen reporting in los angeles county. thank you for that. well, today and tomorrow, meteorologists are warning that weather conditions in southern california will be, quote, extremely critical. ventura valley to the san bernardino mountains could see wind gusts topping 50 miles an hour. red flag warnings have been issued for parts of ventura and los angeles counties. wildfires in los angeles county have now killed at least 24 people, including a 95 year old woman whose remains were found in her burned out altadena home. eaton is at 14,000 acres, the eaton fire. 14,000 acres and 27% contained. the palisades fire has burned nearly 24,000 acres and is 13% contained. >> our time now 505. a company in novato offering to help people whose computers may have been damaged or destroyed in the southern california wildfires. the company is called

drivesavers. it's donating up to $1 million in free data recovery services to the fire victims. the company specializes in recovering data from hard drives, phones and damaged computers. but it also says some of the fires may have been hot enough to completely melt computer components. >> the nfl has moved tonight's wild card playoff game to arizona due to the wildfires in los angeles. the los angeles rams will now face the minnesota vikings at state farm stadium in glendale, the home of the arizona cardinals. tonight's game was originally scheduled to take place at sofi stadium in inglewood, about ten miles south of downtown l.a, but the nfl made the decision that it would be best to have this game played elsewhere. >> time now. 506a smoke advisory still in effect for most of los angeles county. the county's public health department says the devastating wildfires in the region burning for the past five days have created a very serious air quality problem. the flames have destroyed thousands of

homes and businesses. they're generating a tremendous amount of smoke to contain dangerous toxins. those toxins are mainly coming from the countless number of cars, appliances and furniture that have gone up in flames. >> when you breathe in smoke, it causes inflammation throughout the entire body, and the negative health effects can actually be seen in a very short amount of time. so only a couple of hours. it really depends on the levels and how susceptible you are. the most susceptible people are children, pregnant women, and also those with underlying respiratory conditions. so those with asthma and emphysema. >> and doctor myers warned some of those toxins burning right now and getting into the air. they're not filtered through n95 masks. >> happening today, schools in santa rosa will begin a series of town hall meetings to address community concerns about possible school closures. the district plans to close at least four schools by the end of this school year. it's an effort to

save $11 million over the next two years and offset a $20 million deficit. the first town hall starts at 6:00 tonight at montgomery high school. more meetings are scheduled throughout the month of january. feedback from these meetings are supposed to help guide the district's final decisions, which are expected in february. >> all right, allie. time's 507. we have breaking news that's coming in from overseas. the u.s. geological survey reports a magnitude 6.8 earthquake in southwestern japan. a tsunami warning was issued for the surrounding areas, but it's not expected to affect us in california or elsewhere along the pacific coast. now, this hit about an hour ago. we're waiting now to get about any reports of damage or injuries. japan's meteorological agency says the magnitude of the quake is 6.9. that's slightly higher than the one issued by the usgs. we'll keep watching this and bring you details as we get it.

>> well, we have wind in the forecast, but we also have a full moon monday. today is the day here 13th known as the wolf moon. 2:26 p.m. today, almost a 100% visible, but not yet. but it's close. today, though, full moon monday. a little system clipped, as you can see, coming down from northeast california. zipped right over us. that's just a little open wave system that will form a low now off southern california. and already the wind has picked up here overnight. ali already told me she felt the wind. oakland hills, 52mph. that's above the caldecott tunnel. oakland airport, 43 west side of mount tamalpais, 40mph. cordelia 38, crystal springs reservoir 38 and berkeley lab 32mph. i should add by mills college and merritt college. there's been some gusts around 33. offshore breeze, east breeze, nothing new. i mean, we are just really stuck in this pattern here. fairfield northeast to 23. it's been up to 30. oakland airport was 43 and

now it's come down. thank goodness. but there have been some pretty good gusts. now, officially it's only for the north bay, but i've included the east bay hills. you get gusts to 5253. i think that qualifies. so unofficially, i'll include the east bay in that wind advisory. 3035 menlo park. look at that. 55 napa and petaluma. so a wind driven for sure, or no wind at all. so big spread on these temps here. 45 fairfax. 34 novato 35. yet petaluma 55. so there's some big spreads here in areas not that far apart. napa 55 as well, along with healdsburg 16. truckee 21. south lake tahoe to reno is 22. and there is just nothing in our favor. sunny, breezy to windy on your monday. there is no rain in sight. i'm almost thinking we'll go through the rest of the month without any rain is kind of the way it's looking. unless something changes around the 30th or so, but it's a windy pattern, not only for us, but the wind will be picking up in southern california throughout the day into tuesday, blowing in the wind wall to wall sun, that's for sure. temperatures

it's 513. firefighters in southern california are bracing for the dangerous santa ana winds to come back today. those winds, combined with the already dry conditions, could slow down the efforts to contain the flames. since the fires began, at least 24 people have died. the two biggest fires, the palisades and the eaton fires, together have burned an area bigger than the city of san francisco. the l.a. area is under a red flag warning until wednesday. >> president joe biden is holding meetings today to review the federal response to the southern california fires. the president directed fema to immediately provide financial aid to people who've lost homes and businesses. it's part of the president's previous promise that the federal government would pay for all of the disaster response costs for the next six months. >> well, we're just days away from seeing a nationwide ban on the social media app tiktok go

into effect. the app's parent company, based in china, has until this coming sunday to sell tiktok or face a ban in the united states. after hearing oral arguments, the supreme court appeared willing to uphold that ban in an effort to save tiktok. investor and tv personality kevin o'leary is teaming up with former l.a. dodgers owner frank mccourt, trying to buy tiktok. well, the chp is investigating a very serious highway crash in richmond. it involved four vehicles. it happened last night on westbound interstate 80 near cutting boulevard. investigators say at least one person was rushed to the hospital with major injuries. the chp is expected to give us more information about this crash later today. >> well, some people in southern california returned to their neighborhoods. many are finding just rubble where their homes used to be. entire neighborhoods across the los angeles area burned to the ground. the l.a. county department of public works is promising to help

devastated homeowners clear and clean out their lots. cal fire says the palisades and eaton fires are among the most destructive in the state's history. >> i had a little cottage house gone. just everything is gone and all that's standing is the fireplace. every house on the block is gone except for one. you just have to be strong. have faith. it's just stuff. >> governor newsom signed an executive order to help fire victims rebuild. it eliminates some of the environmental requirements and make sure that property taxes are not increased on people who rebuild. well, a fire marshal well known here in the bay area was deployed to the eaton fire in altadena. santa rosa fire marshal paul lowenthal will serve as a spokesperson for the combined strike force there. >> ktvu tom baker caught up with lowenthal and found out why the fire marshal wanted to be sent down there. >> santa rosa fire marshal paul

lowenthal knows all too well what people are going through. ever since the tubbs fire devastated santa rosa, we saw in 2017 what at the time was the most destructive wildfire in the state's history. >> that's a title that you don't want, but at the same time, that's not a title that you want to lose, because that means that somebody else has gone through something worse than you. >> the eaton fire has special significance to him personally. >> i'm actually from pasadena, born and raised down here. went to school in altadena. a lot of friends either displaced, evacuated or have had their homes destroyed. >> his childhood school burned. >> my middle school was elliottt and to see what this community's been through, obviously i and a lot of people from my area know it all too well. >> personal friends are suffering. >> i am aware of friends that i grew up with that have had their homes destroyed, and that's part of what i also want to be able to help with. but it also helps us with our responses down here,

knowing what these communities have been through, going through it personally and helping bring some of those experiences to the residents and community in this area. >> from personal, professional experience, he knows that only when mother nature ceases, hurricane force winds can firefighters here in santa rosa or anywhere truly fight back. >> when you're dealing with winds of that magnitude, it's hard to make a difference. had the winds not stopped, that fire would have likely continued to push through santa rosa. the only thing that literally stopped that was the winds letting up. >> even with this level of destruction, like santa rosa, altadena will one day recover. >> whether it's quickly or slowly. either way, the communities get stronger and move towards recovery. >> the time to heal victims and responders has begun. tom vacar, ktvu fox two news. >> the scenes of devastation are so tragic there, and it really makes you think back to what happened in 2017. and, you know, paul lowenthal, in that story, steve talked about the role nature plays in putting out

these fires. they're not really getting a break. >> there's no break in sight, to be honest with you. in fact, this pattern may last off and on most of the month, unless something really changes here. we've had some pretty good gusts already in our local vicinity here, right above the claremont, 52mph, about 245 in the morning. i believe their oakland airport, 43 the west side of mount tamalpais, 40. cordelia 38. crystal springs reservoir 38. berkeley lab 32. around mills college. and also there are a few areas around chabot have had 32 33mph. there it is. oakland. north northeast 51mph. that's at 1400 feet. how in the wide, wide world of weather, can you not issue a wind advisory for the east bay when you're getting gusts to 51? i don't know, so i've issued one myself. that's strong. that was a roaring gust right there. oakland airport did have a gust of 43. not as bad. now. fairfield did have 1 to 30. now it's 23. but until 10:00

this morning, north east bay hills. there will be some pretty good gusts are already seeing 35 to 55mph. 30s, 40s and 50s. menlo park is 35. amazing. 55 napa airport. petaluma is 55. i mean, menlo park 35 to sfo is 52. i mean, if you're traveling anywhere on the peninsula and, you know, that's a big swing there. 40s on the temps. clayton 42, alamo 40, dublin 40, san ramone sleeping in. that's right there. lafayette, orinda both at 43 and 49 berkeley. the berkeley lab has gusts to 31 32mph. 21 mammoth, 24, reno 16 and 21 for truckee and south lake tahoe. ely, the lone outpost out there at eight, a little system clipped us. it's now going to form a low in southern california, and then it will start to retrograde a couple of days in a couple of days, which should help alleviate some wind. but today and tomorrow it's going to be about that offshore breeze, not only for us, but picking up for them as well. there's just i mean, there's just nothing that says anything's changing anytime soon. so blowing in the wind.

23 today, first lady jill biden is coming here to the bay area. she's joining the health care and pharmaceutical conference called fierce jpm week 2025. it's in san francisco and she's the keynote speaker. the first lady arrives this afternoon at sfo. she plans to stay through wednesday. she'll be at the conference as part of the white house initiative on women's health research. it's the main topic of her speech. the conference runs tuesday and wednesday. well, we're now one week away from the inauguration of president elect donald trump, and the u.s. senate is scrambling to confirm his cabinet nominees. there are 14 confirmation hearings scheduled in the senate this week alone.

republicans hope to have most of the trump team in place by inauguration day. >> when president trump takes office next monday. there is going to be shock and awe with executive orders. a blizzard of executive orders on the economy, as well as on the border. >> the confirmation hearings for high level officials include south dakota governor kristi noem to head the department of homeland security, pam bondi as the attorney general. florida senator marco rubio for secretary of state and veteran and former fox news host pete hegseth as secretary of defense. president elect trump is preparing to move back into the white house, and over the weekend, trump held several meetings at his home in florida. he talked about several topics, including canada's relationship with the united states. the trump team says people should get ready for a big first few days in office.

clark monday morning, january 13th. let's get right to steve paulson who's concerned about the winds today for us and for southern california. >> so yes no doubt we have some pretty good gusts 51mph right above the claremont caldecott tunnel. a little system clipped is called a little open wave. it will form a low down in southern california. i'll put in the wind particles you can see. there it is. see that little already? look at that offshore direction. right over us. goes north, north, north. now it's northeast. so that's what we're dealing with. and it's with us again. there is a wind advisory. north bay hills. but i'm just unofficially including the east bay hills. but you know, it will be a blustery breezy day, maybe windy for some. 30s, 40s and 50s on the temps spread, wind or no wind. and we are looking for a wind advisory. highs today will only be really in the low 60s. that goes until 10:00 this morning. all right. sal's here. still 80? >> yeah. 80. steve, westbound at carlson. they're clearing up a crash that damaged the center divide. traffic is going to be a

little bit slow in the area. from richmond getting out to carlson. some lanes are open, but it is still going to be an issue. it's been out there since early this morning. this is a look at interstate 880. that traffic looks good. and there are no major delays so far on bay area bridges. 530. let's get back to the headlines. >> thank you. sal. firefighters battling the los angeles wildfires are worried about the santa ana winds. they are expected to pick up today and make that firefight even more dangerous. governor newsom says fire crews are staking out strategic positions across southern california to stop any flare ups and any new fires. authorities now say the number of people who have died in these fires has gone up to a total of 2416 people in the eaton fire and eight in the palisades fire. but that number is expected to rise as search crews continue to comb through burned out neighborhoods. 16 people are still unaccounted for. containment of these fires has improved. cal fire says the palisades fire is now at 13%

containment, nearing 24,000 acres burned. the eaton fire is 27% contained and has burned about 14,000 acres. bay area firefighters continue to help in southern california. ktvu james torres live from the oakland hills, sharing the story of some oakland firefighters who are there doing their part. james. >> ali. good morning. more than 20 firefighters from oakland are now down in southern california this morning. they are on the front lines of the eaton fire, trying to do what they can to help those crews in la who have been at this for several days now. they've been there since about wednesday evening. and they say with the idea of santa ana winds picking back up again today, tonight and tomorrow, there's still no telling how soon until they all get to go home, but that not really the top of mind for them. not really the priority at this time. they're kind of giving us an idea now of what they've been going through since being there. they say they are in 24 hour shifts each day. they make plans on how to either evacuate people, prepare homes that are

still standing, or how to clear out some of those hotspots before winds pick back up again. so far, they say, what they're seeing is awful, truly devastating. >> just to drive city blocks and see nothing standing, nothing remaining. and that is incredibly hard and incredibly hard to see, especially when whatever we do or what everybody's doing, doing their best to see people's lives changed, lives lost. it's very hard. >> and those firefighters tell us some of the frustrations they are hearing are hitting close to home conversations like water supply, budget concerns or low resources. you may remember the oakland city council voted to temporarily shutter a handful of stations in the town as it works to make up a nearly $130 million budget deficit. even more stations are up for consideration to brown out next

month. now, those oakland firefighters they say they sent down for apparatus with those crews. they also have some search and rescue teams helping people who need help or in some cases, recovering bodies left behind from the fires. we're live this morning from the oakland hills. i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right james thank you. time now 533. president biden met with federal officials to find out and talk about relief efforts in the fire zone. fox reporter lucas tomlinson shows us how people can get help from the federal government. >> president biden spent the day here at the white house receiving updates from senior officials, including his dhs secretary and fema chief, about the wildfires in los angeles. earlier on fox news sunday, deanne criswell spoke about how people in la can get help. >> we want to make sure that they start that process by one. registering for assistance at disasterassistance.gov, but also contacting their insurance company because we'll need to

know exactly what they are going to cover, but more importantly, not cover, so they can be eligible for different programs within our system. >> on abc, criswell was asked why hundreds of active duty forces have not been used to combat the fires. late last week, ten navy helicopters arrived from san diego. they have also not been used. >> i'd have to defer to the incident commanders. right. the incident commanders on the ground know what the needs are, where they need to put people. and often in these situations, it's very strategic. it's not necessarily about always putting more people on that. we have to make sure that it's safe. and, you know, you can only add so much aircraft in the airspace. >> president biden also spoke sunday with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu about a cease fire and hostage release deal with hamas. those details could be announced later this week ahead of the inauguration of donald trump. dozens of hostages will potentially be released in this phase one of the deal at the white house. lucas tomlinson, fox news.

>> well, the fires in los angeles are still burning, of course, but governor gavin newsom has taken some steps to help people rebuild in the areas that are heavily damaged. as soon as the fires stop. >> california leads the nation in environmental stewardship. i'm not going to give that up. but one thing i won't give into is delay. delay is denial for people, life's traditions, places torn apart, torn asunder. >> newsom appeared on nbc's meet the press. he signed an executive order eliminating some environmental regulations and preventing property tax assessment increases for any homeowner rebuilding in that burn zone. governor newsom calls it california's version of the marshall plan, the american effort to rebuild western europe after world war two. the governor also responded to president elect donald trump, who has blamed newsom for the widespread damage caused by these fires. >> i called for him to come out, take a look for himself. we want to do in the spirit of an open

hand, not a closed fist. he's the president elect. i respect the office. >> the governor says these fires will cost the most of any natural disaster in u.s. history. >> our time now, 536. around the country, people are showing support for the fire victims in the l.a. that includes several bay area businesses, several bars and restaurants. added new menu items this month. they're sending the profits down to organizations in the l.a. area. some business owners say their spirit of giving increased. others say this really hits close to home. >> the school i went to is gone, as well as a lot of the homes of people that i grew up with that i love and care about deeply. so we're just happy to do our small part to help as much as we can from up here. >> now, the business owners told ktvu they made hundreds of dollars over the weekend. it's going to be donated to organizations in los angeles, the institute of contemporary art museum in san francisco is loading donations onto a truck,

which will then deliver the goods to fire victims in los angeles. >> organizers of the donation drive were overwhelmed by the community's support. some of the people who dropped off donations decided to stay and help sort through all the items. >> we knew how deeply connected the bay area community, especially in the arts, is to our la family. and so i think, you know, we were not surprised by the desire to give and also donate to causes on the ground. but i think the outpouring of items has just been unreal. so yes, i think we were pleasantly surprised. >> donations will go to a los angeles nonprofit called it's bigger than us. its mission is to tackle poverty. you can also join fox network's support of families impacted by the california wildfires. your donation will go directly to the red cross as it works to help people recover from this disaster. or you can visit ktvu.com/wildfire help to support different charitable organizations, or use that qr code on your screen. >> our time now 538. santa clara

santa ana winds today. those winds, combined with the already dry conditions, could slow down containment efforts on the fires happening there. now, since the fires began, at least 24 people have died. the two largest fires, the palisades and eaton fires, together have burned an area larger than the city of san francisco. the la area is under a red flag warning until wednesday, and because of those wildfires, the national football league has moved tonight's wild card playoff game to arizona. >> the la rams will play the minnesota vikings at state farm stadium in glendale, arizona, the home of the arizona cardinals. the game was originally scheduled to be played at sofi stadium in inglewood, about ten miles south of downtown los angeles. >> today, first lady jill biden is visiting the bay area. she's a keynote speaker at the healthcare and pharmaceutical conference fierce jmp week 2025, in san francisco. it's part of the white house's initiative on women's health research, which will be the main topic of her address.

>> and oakland police say a brother and sister were sitting in a car with their father yesterday morning when an unknown person came up to their car and shot the siblings. the police say this happened as they were heading to the oakland swap meet near the coliseum. the victim's father drove them to the hospital. that's where they were treated for major injuries. both are expected to survive. so far, there's no word of arrests. >> in berkeley, police are investigating a burglary. burglary at the chevron extra mile convenience store on san pablo avenue near gilman street. the store shared this security camera video, which showed several people breaking a window to get in on saturday night. once inside the store, they used a crowbar to open an atm. there's no word yet from police on any arrests or how much was taken. >> san jose police are still investigating a shooting where one man was killed. the police rushed to apartments near rosemary elementary school. they found a man with gunshot wounds. he was taken to the hospital. that's where he was pronounced

extreme conditions will wipe out the progress they made containing these fires over the weekend. ktvu is andre senior is here to tell us about the challenges facing firefighters this week. >> dave, good morning to you both here. forecasters predict weather conditions could be, quote, extremely critical. >> red flag warning is in effect and will remain until 6 p.m. wednesday evening. strong santa ana winds are also expected to last through wednesday, with the strongest winds occurring on tuesday. >> so wind gusts could top 50 miles an hour. this comes as fire crews are making a dent on the fires. the palisades has burned nearly 24,000 acres, but containment went up to 13%. the eaton is at 14,000 acres, with containment at 27%. >> we're still continuing to face some very dangerous winds that are upcoming, at least through the wednesday into thursday morning period in particular. that does mean we will utilize public safety power shut off as a tool of last

resort. >> investigators are checking an electric tower as a possible source for the eaton fire, which has claimed 16 lives, including a 95 year old woman. so far, southern california edison says it does not believe its electrical equipment was responsible. palisades is blamed for eight deaths. authorities say these numbers will only go up as searchers find more victims in burned out homes. >> hey, babe. i need you to come out here right now. we have a very big problem. what? holy. >> i'm gonna spray the well. >> a ring doorbell camera recorded a couple evacuating after realizing flames were approaching their house. homeowners who've lost all their belongings are turning to their faiths and each other for support. please, god. and all that's standing is the fireplace. every house on the block is gone except for one. you just have to be strong. have faith. it's just stuff. >> the governor newsom signed an executive order to help fire victims rebuild. it eliminates some of the environmental requirements and makes sure that property taxes are not increased on people who rebuild. >> we continue to see some heartbreaking images from these los angeles county wildfires. cal fire released pictures of homes before and after the disaster, and some of the multimillion dollar houses along the coast there in southern california, had stood for years. but in a matter of minutes and hours, these homes were reduced to rubble and ash. like this house in pacific palisades, it will take some time before homeowners can come back in and rebuild. and altadena, there's a picture of a home that was once surrounded by shrubs and trees. unfortunately, this was one of the houses that went up in flames, not much of it still standing afterwards. a brick

pillar is all that is left there. you see, it looks like the chimney of that home. there's also some remnants of charred trees and shrubs. >> well, cal fire says the state of california is dealing with an alarming increase in wildfire activity. just two weeks into the new year because of those fires in southern california. so far, california is experiencing a 120% increase in fires compared to the five year average. as for total acres burn. california is seeing a 293,000% surge, with 40,000 acres burned in just the first ten days of january. cal fire reminds everybody to create a defensible space around your property. >> the historic firestorm in los angeles is raising concerns about the recent decision here locally to shut down some fire stations in oakland. it was exactly one week ago that the city shut down two fire stations in the oakland hills due to the city's budget crisis. those closures took place the day before the firestorm in los

angeles began. bay area firefighters have expressed concerns about fire safety in oakland even before these historic fires. 300 miles south of the bay area broke out. >> we talk to our crews. it's in the back of our mind. we know that with everything that our city is going through, it's not a matter of if. it's a matter of when another fire will ravage our community. >> oakland firefighters also say there are some strong similarities between the geography of the oakland hills and the fire zone in los angele. >> it mirrors the oakland hills, tight streets, interface and intermix of homes throughout the hills, canyons. we have the diablo winds, which are sister winds to the santa ana winds. >> the disaster in los angeles is also bringing back sad memories of the oakland hills fire in 1991. that fire killed

serious highway crash in richmond that involved four vehicles. it happened last night on westbound interstate 80 near cutting boulevard. investigators say at least one person was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. the chp is expected to release more information on this crash later today. >> time now 614. in san francisco, a police suv crashed into another vehicle and a building early this morning. take a look. you can see the damage to the police car. this happened at the corner of san bruno avenue and paul avenue. the police officer and the driver, they were both taken to the hospital, treated for minor injuries. police didn't say what led to that crash. we've tried to contact the police to get more information. we're waiting for details. >> late last night in oakland, a sideshow took over an intersection at macarthur boulevard and 106th street. in the video, you see people standing around watching as cars spin around at that intersection. this happened around 11:00 last night. once police arrived, the crowds broke

to help battle the wildfire crisis in southern california. >> ktvu james torres is live in the oakland hills this morning, sharing the story of oakland firefighters who are doing their part on the front lines in l.a. james. >> yeah, ali and dave. oakland has sent more than 20 firefighters down to southern california. as you mentioned, they're doing their part. they've been there since about wednesday evening. and given that we're going to expecting to see another santa ana winds event today, tonight, probably tomorrow as well, there's no telling how much longer they will stay in southern california and away from home. not the priority right now. they're focused on trying to do their part and help out where they can. again, they've been there since about wednesday. we spoke to one of those firefighters giving us an idea of what their experience is looking like. those firefighters working 24 hour shifts, and each day they work together to make plans on how to evacuate people, how to prepare homes, or how to clear hotspots before those winds pick up again, making sure they can minimize that fire danger. so

far, they say what they're seeing is awful, truly devastating. >> just to drive city blocks and see nothing standing, nothing remaining. and that is incredibly hard and incredibly hard to see, especially when whatever we do or what everybody's doing, doing their best to see people's lives changed, lives lost. it's very hard. >> those firefighters tell us some of the frustrations they are hearing from people in the la area, hitting close to home conversations like water supply, budget concerns or low resources. if you may remember, the oakland city council voted to temporarily shutter a handful of stations in the town as it works to make up a nearly $130 million budget deficit. even more of those stations are up for consideration next month. oakland fire also sent down four apparatus with the crews. they

also sent down some search and rescue teams helping people who are in need or in some cases, recovering bodies left behind in those destructive fires. we're live this morning in the oakland hills. i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right james thank you. time now 6.34. while it's hard to find any silver lining in the devastating fires, scientists are saying the data being collected right now can help anticipate and better understand fire behavior. now, at san jose state's wildfire interdisciplinary research center. craig clements and his team use the latest technology to study fire weather behavior, including the moisture sensors, drone data and the mobile doppler radar to look at the wildfire plumes. >> we can peer into the plume, we can see the velocities or the wind speeds. we can see, you know, the debris inside the plume and where it's falling out. and that allows us to collect data that we can then compare to a simulation.

>> despite all the loss and destruction, the science gained from all these devastating fires, it may help communities be safer in the future. >> california's republican leaders are calling on governor newsom to convene a special session of the state legislature to address the wildfire crisis in los angeles. they sent a letter to the governor saying that a special meeting of state lawmakers should focus on ways to provide financial assistance to fire victims. the republican leaders also say the legislature needs to examine the devastating impact this firestorm is having on california's economy and insurance industry. the governor has not yet responded. >> well, fire victims could become victims for a second time when they file insurance claims. the experts with the insurance information institute say. californians filing claims for fire losses in the l.a. county fires should avoid third party sources offering claims, adjusting help. the institute offered some tips, including using your insurance company's

on to is 654. as part of california's mutual aid system, santa rosa fire marshal paul lowenthal, who's well known to bay area news watchers, was sent down to the eaton fire, now to dana, to be the spokesperson for the combined strike force. ktvu tom vacar caught up with lowenthal and found out why the fire marshal wanted to be there. >> santa rosa fire marshal paul lowenthal knows all too well what people are going through. ever since the tubbs fire devastated santa rosa, we saw in 2017 what at the time was the most destructive wildfire in the state's history. >> that's a title that you don't want, but at the same time, that's not a title that you want to lose, because that means that somebody else has gone through something worse than you. >> the eaton fire has special significance to him personally. >> i'm actually from pasadena, born and raised down here, went to school in altadena. a lot of friends either displaced, evacuated or have had their homes destroyed. >> his childhood school burned.

of downtown los angeles. well, the nba games postponed because of the wildfires are set to resume tonight. the la clippers plan to host against the miami heat, and the lakers will host the san antonio spurs. the clippers say the team received the go ahead from the nba to move ahead with their team and into its dome in inglewood. it's just south of the palisades fire. the lakers announced plans for a donation drive that will begin tonight. they're asking fans to bring new packaged items to help support the l.a. regional food bank's relief efforts. time is now. 657 disney making a donation to people in l.a. who lost their homes and businesses in the wildfires. the company is donating $15 million to various efforts offering relief in the area. the money is due to be donated to organizations including the american red cross, the la fire department foundation, and the los angeles regional food bank.

today, the san francisco spca is heading down to los angeles to help animal shelters down there. the nonprofit is waiving all adoption fees so it can receive adoptable dogs and cats in some of the fire torn areas. and since we first started talking about this on our air over the weekend, the nonprofit organization says it adopted 30 other pets during the weekend. the group will be heading back here to the bay area on wednesday, with several new animals ready to be adopted. they won't be bringing back any pets that belong to fire victims. only animals that were already in the shelter. >> there's no power. there's no water. there's broken gas lines, and we have unstable structures. >> thousands of people still can't go home. as southern california wildfires rage, the new concerns about winds. and firefighters say the coming days are critical. >> plus, if they keep their word
