deadly freeway shooting in 2023 that killed a five year old girl, five year old eliana crisostomo was shot and killed as she rode in her family's car on interstate 880, in fremont. three men were arrested. they were charged with murder when former alameda county district attorney pamela price announced charges last year. she didn't include special circumstances in the charges. a legal expert told ktvu that without the special circumstances, the suspects in the killing, if they are convicted, could be eligible for parole in the future. >> there are some crimes that you can rehabilitate the criminals, but there's no coming back from killing a child. i hope they get life without the possibility of parole. that's what's deserved. why gamble with the future of other children's lives? >> now, the interim alameda county district attorney hasn't said if he will add special circumstance charges. today, a

judge will start hearing evidence to determine if the case will go to trial. >> powerful winds are hitting parts of southern california again this morning as crews continue fighting those multiple fires. 25 people are now confirmed dead. as for containment, the palisades fire is now 18% contained. it has burned more than 23,000 acres in altadena. the eaton fire is 35% contained and has burned more than 14,000 acres. investigators are now searching for answers to what set off these massive fires. multiple lawsuits have been filed against the utility company southern california edison. now, those lawsuits claim the utility's equipment sparked the eaton fire near pasadena. edison acknowledged it's investigating the claim. investigative teams are also examining the site of a brush fire that started on new year's eve. neighbors say that fire burned near the origin of the palisades fire, indicating it

may have been smoldering for days. >> they are combing through the debris, looking at burn patterns, talking to witnesses. that is a week apart, so that's a long time to have any embers smoldering. however, you did have some significant wind that could blow on anything that's there. >> a team from the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives is leading the investigation. the teams say it could take months to determine the cause of all the fires. >> well, a candlelight vigil was held in los angeles honoring the victims of the wildfires. community members came together paying their respects to the fire victims. also showing appreciation for the first responders. several community groups organized a vigil, calling it a gesture of solidarity. >> it's important that we all come together, and what tonight is about here in south los angeles is that there are no borders. we are here in solidarity for our communities

across this city. >> now, the fire victims are facing a long and very challenging road to recovery. there's a new study released by accuweather saying it will cost more than $250 billion to rebuild. well, the white house says the federal government will pay most of the recovery costs for six months. and after that, president biden wants congress to approve funding for the help that's needed. however, political challenges on capitol hill are expected as many republicans, including house speaker mike johnson, say that any federal aid should come with conditions. democrats say that's outrageous. >> we should not be leveraging the pain and suffering of our fellow americans to try to force through policy changes. no one wants to leave any american who is in need. hanging, so to speak. right? but at the same time, we recognize we have a $36 trillion federal debt, and we have to balance these needs. >> now, republicans want

financial conditions related to fire prevention and management. last month, congress approved $100 billion in emergency aid for wildfires and other disasters. >> alameda is taking the next steps to give new life to a historic building. ktvu sally rasmus spoke to people about building 92 and what they'd like to see at the site. she joins us now live from alameda this morning. good morning ali. >> good morning. yes, this is the building here behind us. it doesn't look that exciting and impressive at this hour, but it is a historic building. going back to when all of this land here was part of an active naval air station here at alameda point. this building for sale, about 90,000ft!s. and it is for sale. the city of alameda would like to know what developers and prospective buyers would do with this property, and how they would repurpose and reuse it. it's located at alameda point on west ranger avenue, next to the popular almanac beer company. it

used to house the alameda food bank, but that organization was able to move into a new place right across the street. starting this week, the city of alameda will start taking proposals from developers who want to buy this and turn it into something new. the city council gets to approve the sale based on those proposals, and the priority is something that will provide jobs and add to the developing sense of community in this new neighborhood. >> we are making sure that this part of the city is kind of incorporated into the larger fabric of the city of alameda. we are really just trying to make a vibrant place for people to quite honestly, live, work, play and visit. >> now these are some pictures of the inside. this comes from the real estate office website representing this property. the asking price has not been disclosed, but other former naval base buildings have sold in the millions in the past decade. building 91 next door, for example, which houses almanac beer company, was bought

in 2017 for 2.8 million. now, since this is a historic building, the developer would have to abide by certain guidelines. the building would have to be some sort of business, not housing. and as for the timeline on when this could become something new? well, the city of alameda will continue to accept some of those proposals until april and then by the summer or early fall, city council could make a decision on what should be built here next. live in alameda. ali rasmus, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right. thank you ali. well, san francisco mayor daniel lurie has introduced an ordinance to the board of supervisors to take on the city's fentanyl crisis. he outlined the fentanyl state of emergency ordinance. it would expedite funding for additional hiring of public safety and health staff. the plan would also add shelters, expand treatment and implement new mental health initiatives. mayor lurie says this will allow the city to bypass bureaucratic obstacles that have prevented progress in ending the fentanyl crisis. >> our time now 508. a new

crisis response team being launched today by the city of san leandro. the alternative response team will connect people having a nonviolent mental health crisis to care, beginning when someone calls 911. this new team is a partnership between the alameda county fire department and a nonprofit group that's based in oakland. the san leandro city manager says the crisis response unit reflects our commitment to compassionate, innovative approaches to public safety. >> well, maybe not as cold as yesterday morning, but it's darn close here. there are many that are around 3233. we'll take a look at some now. lima valley and marin county is 32. petaluma, san martin, walnut creek, felton all 32. saratoga, woodside 33, and danville, san ramon 34. lafayette's in there as well. back to back days with a low. record low in san francisco was 29 degrees january 14th and 15th in 1888. not the coldest 27. december 11th, 1932.

13. three men due in court today. they are accused of being involved in a deadly freeway shooting in 2023 that killed a five year old girl. she was shot and killed as she rode in a car with her family on interstate 880, in fremont. this will be one of the first high profile cases at the alameda county district attorney's office has handled since the recall of former da pamela price. >> we're keeping a close eye on the fires in southern california this morning. fire officials say strong winds have returned today, posing elevated fire risks again. the palisades fire, currently 18% contained. the eaton fire is 35% contained but has burned more than 14,000 acres. >> the long delayed sale of the

oakland coliseum is a step closer to being finalized. the alameda county board of supervisors approved the terms of the agreement for selling the county's 50% interest in the coliseum complex. this follows the agreement by the a's and the city of oakland to sell their shares of the coliseum to the african american sports and entertainment group. the sale is expected to be completed by june 30th. well, tonight, president biden is scheduled to deliver his final address to the nation just days before donald trump returns to the white house. defense secretary nominee pete hegseth was questioned by the senate armed services committee ahead of a confirmation hearing. hegseth gained a hold a hold out vote. republican iowa senator joni ernst, and is now expected to have enough support to be confirmed. the confirmation hearings are scheduled today for florida senator marco rubio for secretary of state and pam bondi

for attorney general. >> my assumption is at least that on some of these key national security positions, that we would have a level of cooperation that would enable us to get some of those positions filled quickly. >> in the meantime, president biden is preparing to deliver his final oval office speech. he released a letter to the nation this morning. it said in part, i ran for president because i believe that the soul of america was at stake. that very nation nature of who we are was at stake. and that is still the case. president biden will address the nation tonight at 5 p.m. >> first lady jill biden is spending her final days in office right here in the bay area advocating for women's health. the first lady spoke at the health care conference that coincides with the j.p. morgan healthcare conference in san francisco. she advocated for research into women's health issues, saying the topic has been neglected by researchers for years. >> globally, women live longer than men, yet we spend 25% more

of our lives in poor health. and that's because women's health is understudied and research is underfunded. >> the first lady called for more research to determine how heart disease impacts women specifically, and to gain a deeper understanding of menopause and treatment. doctor biden says she plans to continue to use her platform to push for more research into women's health. >> our time now. 516. california newborn babies could be coming home from the hospital with free diapers. if an initiative in the governor's budget plan is passed. the diaper initiative would set aside $7 million in this year's budget. it would also set aside 13 million the following year to provide a three month supply of diapers to families of new babies, regardless of their income. california's diaper banks lost out on extra funding in 2023,

after governor newsom vetoed a bill to expand the state's distribution of diapers and baby wipes. >> new research says people are spending more time at home. the study from clemson university, found more people are embracing the homebody lifestyle that started during the pandemic. since 2019, activities outside the house are down by about an hour a day. besides, some employees continue to work from home. the study found people are spending less time socializing. >> maybe we need less shopping, which people are doing less of. maybe we need fewer restaurants. it's a real challenge for commercial real estate. some municipal areas are getting hit really bad with office vacancy in their downtowns having a lot of trouble recovering. >> the behavior is causing concern for retailers nationwide, including here in the bay area. researchers are proposing possible changes to future infrastructure projects to accommodate the trend. >> our time now 518. well, after

kia. movement that inspires. another social media app is trending right now here in the u.s. it's called red note. it was launched in 2013. it's another company from china. it combines e-commerce with short videos like tiktok and posts like pinterest. analysts say it has more than 300 million active users every month. most of them are young women. this week, it became the top downloaded app in the u.s. in anticipation of that ban of tiktok. >> today, it has grown into a popular platform for young people to share practical tips or tutorials on various topics. >> red note may not last long. it's also raising concerns since it's also owned by a chinese

company. and that's the reason tiktok is facing a possible ban. the securities and exchange commission is suing elon musk now for actions that were taken before the takeover of twitter. the sec says musk failed to disclose his ownership of more than 5% of twitter stock in a timely manner before he bought the company back in 2022. the sec says that musk underpaid at least $150 million for extra shares he bought. right now, it's not clear if that lawsuit will continue under the trump administration. the chairperson of the sec plans to step down on inauguration day. well, more layoffs are coming for employees at facebook and the instagram parent meta, according to an internal memo from ceo mark zuckerberg. meta will soon lay off more low performers throughout the company. zuckerberg says he decided to raise the bar on performance

management and move out low performers faster. the exact number of job cuts, that's not clear. however, according to bloomberg, managers at meta have been told that about 5% of employees will be laid let go. that's about 3600 people. well, almost 150 people in the bay area will lose their jobs when two local macy's stores closed down. the macy's stores at the new park mall in newark and the village at corte madera will close in the coming months. the company filed a notice with the state, saying 94 people will be laid off at the newark location. 53 more will lose their jobs in madera. macy's ceo says closing stores is never easy, but the company has to focus on locations that have stronger sales. our time now. 526 a group of high school athletes coming together to help wildfire victims in southern california. details of the relief efforts

headlines. >> okay, sal. well, happening today. a bay area judge will hear arguments in the case of three men accused of shooting and killing an eight year old girl during a freeway shooting. now, this case may move forward, even while alameda county still doesn't have a permanent district attorney. ktvu james torres is at the courthouse in dublin now. that hearing will take place later this morning. good morning james. >> good morning to you, dave. well, that shooting happened about two years ago was along 880in fremont, i-880, and that's when police say three suspected gang members fired into a car, killing a young girl. that girl, five year old eliana crisostomo. her brother was sitting right next to her when it happened. and at the time, then district attorney pamela price did file those charges against the three suspected gang members. she also did add some enhancements to those charges, but did not add special circumstances. that could mean that if convicted, those three alleged gang members could face life in prison

without the possibility of parole, rather with the possibility of parole. now, elian's mother told ktvu, that's not the kind of justice that she would find sufficient, and she's hoping that the next leadership in the district attorney's office would change that. >> there are some crimes that you can rehabilitate the criminals, but there's no coming back from killing a child. my daughter deserves justice, and i won't stop until she receives it. that's my job as a mother. i won't, i won't give up. >> humberto anaya, crystal valderrama and emanuel serrano are each charged with murder in this case. a judge will determine if and how the case will proceed to trial. that hearing this morning is set to start at 830 at the county courthouse here in dublin. we'll let you know what happens. we're live this morning in dublin. i'm

james torres, ktvu, fox two news. >> thank you james. the firefight continues down south this morning with strong winds picking up again in the area. the palisades fire, now 18% contained. it has burned nearly 24,000 acres. the eaton fire near altadena and pasadena is now 35% contained. 14,000 acres have burned there. 25 people now confirmed dead in the fires. those dangerous fire conditions persist, and authorities are warning people to be ready to leave their home at a moment's notice. more bay area businesses are stepping in to help wildfire victims in southern california. several fundraising events are taking place to support multiple relief efforts. one san francisco restaurant is bringing back a popular bake sale. the chef there says all proceeds will go towards feeding thousands of evacuees and first responders on the ground. >> i think in restaurants like

what we do is hospitality, and i think that doesn't just stop at serving people dinner. like taking care of people is what we do. >> it's nice to be able to provide people with, you know, warm meals and what they need. and so like, this is what we can do. we're far away. but this is kind of like what we can do. and it feels good. >> several bars in the bay area are also donating a portion of their sales to support the relief efforts. >> our time is 530. for some, high school student athletes in napa are putting together a collection drive to help the fire victims in southern california. members of the girls soccer team at justin-siena high school came up with this idea. they're putting together drawstring bags filled with supplies. it will include water, energy bars, blankets and the teenagers are also writing personal notes for the recipients. >> i know that would be like a really great thing. like, just like hi. like i know, like how you're feeling. like just things

that, like, would make them feel better because right now they're going through a really hard time. >> and the people who want to contribute, you can drop off donations at the front office at justin-siena high school. the students will get together next monday on martin luther king day to put the packages together. well, starting today, the east bay spca is offering free adoptions to help clear out its shelters. volunteers drove to the l.a. county animal care center in lancaster over the weekend to bring adoptable pets back here to the bay area. and they brought back ten dogs. now they're trying to make room to take in even more pets. if you're interested in adopting, you can just visit these available animals between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. until sunday. there are more than 30 dogs, including puppies and about ten cats that are available. and just a reminder, if you want to help, you can join the support of families affected by the california wildfires with your

help. we've raised more than $3 million. you can scan that qr code on your tv screen right now, or you can go to ktvu.com/wildfire to make a financial donation. >> well, the alameda county board of supervisors approved the terms of a deal that would give control of its portion of the coliseum site to the african american sports and entertainment group. now, the process has taken years, but the group said five key things had to happen. the city and the a's, who shared ownership. both had to agree to sell. those deals were made for $125 million each. there were also bonds and a lawsuit that needed to be resolved. and the final step was the county. the county sold its portion of the coliseum, but still had control of the site. >> all of these pieces had to fall in place in order for us to close with the city, as well as the county. so these were very critical pieces. and, you know, it's hard to explain it, but i think when you look at it in its

completion, you see how all the points of sequence had to work. >> now, last night's approval should mean that within 30 days, days, a deal could be signed solution that the county board of supervisors unanimously approved is a public signal and direction to county staff to move forward and make this assignment so that a single entity can control that coliseum site and then move forward with the development project that is envisioned, a transformative project for not only oakland, but for the region. now, there are still some steps that need to be complete even after the county portion is done. but if all goes smoothly, the entire transaction could be completed by the end of may. that would mean a final payment of $95 million to the city of oakland, and redevelopment could then get underway at that coliseum site. >> our time now 5.38 will next week. baseball hall of famer and lifetime animal advocate tony

it's 543. here are some of the stories we're following this morning. three men are due in court today. they're accused of being involved in a deadly freeway shooting in 2023 that killed a five year old girl. she was shot and killed while riding in a car with her family on interstate 880, in fremont. this will be one of the first high profile cases the alameda county da's office has handled since the recall of former district attorney pamela price. this week, the city of alameda will start hearing proposals from developers who want to buy an historic building near the former naval air station. city leaders want to bring some new life to alameda point, and they hope to fill that space with a business, not housing. the goal is to create more jobs and develop a sense of community in that growing neighborhood. and later today, president biden is scheduled to deliver his farewell address to the nation. the president's speech from the oval office is scheduled for

5:00 this evening. next monday, president biden will fly out of washington, d.c. at noon, marking the end of his more than 50 year career in politics. san francisco mayor daniel lurie introduced an ordinance to deal with the fentanyl drug crisis. it would speed up funding for additional hiring of public safety as well as health staff. the plan would also add shelters, expand treatment and also put in place new mental health initiatives. >> an investigation into a shooting at a religious school in butte county last month shows the gunman used a modified weapon known as a ghost gun. the man opened fire at feather river adventist school, critically injuring two kindergartners. he then took his own life. authorities say he purchased the gun illegally in arizona. it didn't have a serial number and consisted of parts from different guns. in one of the final moves of president joe biden, the presidency, the u.s.

is going to remove cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism. the administration says the deal is a strategic move to free political prisoners. it reached an agreement for the cuban government to release prisoners deemed unjustly detained by the end of the president's term. about 550 prisoners are expected to be released. that deal is a direct reversal of a decision, then president donald trump to designate cuba a state sponsor of terrorism, in january 2021. >> time is now 545. a bill was just passed by the house of representatives that would change the title nine rules, and transgender athletes would be banned from women's sports at many schools. the rule applies to colleges, universities and k through 12 schools that get federal funding. the bill passed in the house with two democrats voting with the republicans. title nine is a federal law that prohibits sex discrimination in education programs. critics say the new legislation is part of

it will be the 74th annual nba all star game. >> bravo! the time is 556. san francisco now has a $15 million grant to help meet the growing demand for ev charging in the city. the funding was awarded by the department of transportation. it will be used to install 270 level two chargers and 30 fast chargers in neighborhoods that include the civic center, chinatown, and the mission, and even more. the chargers will be built with future expansion in mind, helping to inch the city closer to a goal of achieving 100% emission free transportation by the year 2040. >> a $20 million donation will help bay area students attend private schools. the basic fund provides scholarships for pre-k through eighth grade students based on need. the gift will allow it to support nearly 2000 additional students. the nonprofit organization currently provides scholarships to more

than 3200 students. it says more than 98% of their low income scholars graduate from high school. >> time now, 557 people in san francisco's fillmore district are pressuring city leaders to do something ahead of the closure of the only full service grocery store in that neighborhood. advocates met outside of the safeway store in the fillmore before they marched to city hall. now, safeway says it will close that store on webster and geary by february 7th. after 40 years of being there. the safeway said it made the decision because of continuing theft and concerns about employee and customer safety. families say the closures will make things really hard for people who simply need a convenient place to buy groceries. >> i have to, like, go to a further safeway and we won't. we wouldn't be able to walk there no more. >> well, the group called on the board of supervisors to deal

with that closure with a special hearing. the residents hope to see another grocery store replace that safeway. well, walgreens is closing two more of its locations in oakland. the store on east 18th street by lake merritt and the one on telegraph by children's hospital. they will be closing by the end of next month. that's in addition to the walgreens on high street in east oakland, which is closing this month. last month, walgreens announced plans to close 1200 of its stores around the country over the next several years. >> the marin county board of supervisors is making some history. parole in the future. >> there are some crimes that you can rehabilitate the criminals, but there's no coming back from killing a child. i hope they get life without the possibility of parole. that's what's deserved. why gamble with the future of other children's lives? >> now, the interim alameda county district attorney hasn't said if he will add special circumstance charges today. a judge will start hearing evidence to determine if the case will go to trial. >> well, today, oakland police chief floyd mitchell will present proposed changes to the city's pursuit policy. the proposed changes are in response to governor gavin newsom's declaration that oakland needs to loosen its policy on police pursuits. currently, oakland police are only allowed to pursue a suspect if there is suspicion of a violent forcible crime or if that person is believed to have a gun. we don't know the changes that will be proposed, but chief mitchell

will present them in front of the oakland police commission tonight at the sixth at 630. during a town hall meeting. well, firefighters are facing another day of dangerous, windy conditions as they work to maintain their progress in the deadly palisades and eaton wildfires. >> and a red flag warnings in effect today. through this afternoon, conditions are expected to be perfect for an explosive fire growth. ktvu is andre senior is in the studio now with the latest on that fight against those wildfires. >> it's a shame too, because they've been able to hold the palisades fire, a slight containment there. the eaton fire a little bit better. but now we have this weather situation to worry about here. the palisades fire has burned nearly 24,000 acres since it started last tuesday. so far, it's only 18% contained, up from 17% yesterday. firefighters continue to gain containment on the eaton fire. it has burned a total of 14,000 acres and is now 45% contained. that is up 10% from last night. firefighters hope to maintain those numbers

as the national weather service issues a rare, dangerous fire warning for areas in l.a. and ventura counties. gusty winds paired with low humidity and dry fuel are threatening to fan new flames or undo the progress made on the palisades and eaton fires. >> life threatening and destructive and widespread winds are already here for this significant wind event. we are taking an aggressive, lean forward posture. >> engines are staging in high risk areas, and power has been preemptively been shut off to thousands of customers. 88,000 people remain under evacuation orders. another 84,000 are under evacuation warnings. officials are urging people to be ready to go now before evacuation orders are even given. law enforcement and members of the national guard have been tasked with the grim work of looking into 37 missing persons reports across both fires. >> we also have been working with teams that are coming in to work on the palisades to begin

here in alameda point, built back in 1942, in the middle of world war two for use back when this whole area was a working naval air station. it's located on west ranger avenue, and it used to be home of the alameda food bank, which moved across the street starting this week. the city will start taking proposals from developers who want to buy and repurpose this building. the city council gets to approve that sale based on those proposals, and their priority is seeing something here that will provide jobs and add a sense of community. >> we first of all, have to acknowledge that it is a contributing historic structure, and so it has to stay in place, but it could be adaptively used. we're looking for job generating uses. so it could be office. it could be makerspace. it could be neighborhood serving functions. >> i think everyone's really appreciative of what alameda has. i talked to a lot of people that have, you know, kind of moved all over the bay and all they can say is how much they

enjoy living in alameda and how much there's like actually community here. so hopefully that's something we're able to preserve. >> now these are pictures of what building 92 looks like on the inside. from the cushman and wakefield commercial real estate website. it was built from old growth douglas fir, the kind of building materials you'd only find back in the early 1900s. they don't make buildings with that kind of material anymore. the building would have to be some sort of business, not housing, and it would have to stay intact so it couldn't be razed. since this is a historic building, the developer would have to abide by certain guidelines. asking price hasn't been disclosed, but other former naval base buildings here have sold in the millions. building 91 next door, which houses the almanac beer company, was bought in 2017 for 2.8 million. as for the timeline, the city of alameda will continue accepting those proposals until april, and then the city council could make a decision about what goes here next in summer or fall of this year. live in alameda. allie

there's plenty to go around. second day in a row. the record low for the city is 29. that happened on january 14th and 15th in 1888. most rain on this date 1.94 and 1878. the record high not that long ago 73 2009. but if you didn't see yesterday, the coldest low ever for san francisco was not 29, which happened yesterday and today in 1888, but 27 on december 11th, 1932. it also snowed that day. that was an official snow day. climate data, san francisco. we are currently the third driest ever. the driest was ten years ago 2015 when not a drop fell, and before that only 0.06 was the second dry. what was the wettest january in san francisco? steve, i'm glad you asked. that goes way back. hold on. my data here 1862 when 24 and a third fell. that was part of the great flood of 1862. offshore breeze. nothing else really going on. i mean, we're just in a really on a holding

pretty big time there. speaking of bridges, the bay bridge is backed up to the maze. that's more of a normal backup. we don't have any problems on the actual span. 632. let's get back to the headlines. >> thank you. sal. today, a judge will hear arguments in the case of three men accused of killing a young girl during a freeway shooting. the case may move forward as alameda county is still without a permanent district attorney. ktvu james torres is live from the courthouse in dublin, where that hearing is set to happen later this morning. good morning james. >> good morning pamela. that shooting happened about two years ago was along 880 and fremont. that's when police tell us that three suspected gang members shot into a car, killing a young girl inside. that young girl, five year old eliana crisostomo. and at the time that the district attorney's office filed those charges, then da pamela price added enhancements to those charges against the three men, but did not add special circumstances. as a result, that could make the accused murderers up for

officer pled guilty to several charges that include conspiring to injure, threaten and intimidate residents. eric rambo confessed to his role in a massive law enforcement corruption scandal in a deal with federal prosecutors. investigators say rambo conspired with other colleagues to preplan violence, give false police reports, not report uses of force, and deprived the people of antioch of their rights. he's one of 14 former police officers in east contra costa county, charged in a federal and state investigation that started back in 2023. >> the firefight continues down south this morning, with strong winds picking up again in the area. the palisades fire is now 18% contained, but it has burned nearly 24,000 acres. the eaton fire near altadena and pasadena, now 35% contained 14,000 acres, have burned there. 25 people now confirmed dead in the fires and the dangerous fire conditions

persist, and authorities are warning people to be ready to leave their home at a moment's notice. consumer advocates are accusing some landlords in southern california of violating the state law against price gouging during an emergency. that law stops landlords from raising rents by no more than 10% after a state of emergency is declared. bay area news group reports. local online listings show some rents are up 124%. a five bedroom property in santa monica was listed for 12,500 a month in february last year. now it's 28,000 a month. one real estate agent says rents shot up 20% the night the fire started. >> well, more bay area businesses are stepping in to help the wildfire victims down in southern california. several fund raising events are taking place to support several relief efforts. one san francisco restaurant is bringing back a popular bake sale, and the chef there says all the proceeds will

it's hard to explain it, but i think when you look at it in its completion, you see how all the points of sequence had to work. >> last night's approval should mean that within 30 days, a deal could be signed resolution that the county board of supervisors unanimously approved is a public signal and direction to county staff to move forward and make this assignment so that a single entity can control that coliseum site and then move forward with the development project that is envisioned, a transformative project for not only oakland, but for the region. there are still some steps that need to be completed even after the county portion is done. but if all goes smoothly, this entire transaction could be completed by the end of may. >> that's exciting. time now 640. sal is back watching our commute. everybody behaving for you? >> well, dave, that's a subjective question. yeah, i know. >> i figured i'd ask anyway.

to alameda point. they're hoping to fill the space with some sort of business, not housing. the goal is to create more jobs and develop a sense of community in the growing neighborhood. >> well, president biden is delivering his final address to the nation tonight, just days before donald trump begins his second term in the white house. several hearings are scheduled for cabinet nominees for trump. today's hearings include florida senator marco rubio, nominated for secretary of state, and pam bondi for attorney general. >> president elect trump says he will create an external revenue service to collect money internationally. he says for too long, the u.s. went after american taxpayers and overseas investments through the irs, the internal revenue service. but this new revenue service will collect tariffs, international duties and other money from foreign sources. tariff collection currently falls under customs and border protection and homeland security. creating a separate revenue service may need congressional approval, but

trump could establish the department within a different existing agency. >> well, in one of the final moves by president biden, the united states will remove cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism. the biden administration says that's a strategic move to free political prisoners. it reached an agreement for the cuban government to release prisoners deemed unjustly detained by the end of president biden's term. about 550 prisoners are expected to be released. the deal is a direct reversal of a decision that then-president donald trump made to designate cuba, a state sponsor of terrorism, back in january of 2021. well, new. this morning, south korea conducted a massive law enforcement operation. it included arresting that country's impeached president. south korea's anti-corruption agency took him into custody. his security force did not try to resist. authorities accused him of

inciting a rebellion by declaring martial law last month without approval from the legislature. the parliament then impeached him. >> jpmorgan chase reported record annual profits that were driven by strong performance in deal making and trading activities. profit for 2024 rose to $58.5 billion, from about $50 billion this time last year. the nation's largest bank projects this year's income to exceed expectations, despite concerns about government spending, inflation and growth sustainability. wells fargo and goldman sachs also reported strong quarterly numbers this morning. people in san francisco's fillmore district are pressuring city leaders to take action ahead of the closure of the only full service grocery store in the neighborhood. advocates met outside the safeway in the fillmore before marching to city hall. safeway says it will close the store on webster and geary by february 7th, after 40 years of

655. some really special honors for a firefighter from modesto who is battling the l.a. firefighters. a wildfires now yesterday, ryan fenton was promoted to engineer, but since his team is in altadena battling the wildfires, his badge ceremony was also held down there. but the event became even more memorable because legendary mixed martial arts fighter chuck liddell visited the firefighters camp to thank them for all their hard work, and he also pinned the new badge on fenton and even autographed it. >> getting promoted alone is a big deal, and then having

to the board of supervisors to take on the city's fentanyl drug crisis. he outlined the fentanyl state of emergency ordinance. it would speed up funding for additional hiring of public safety and health staff. it would also add shelters, expand treatment and implement new mental health initiatives. mayor lori says this will allow the city to get around the bureaucratic obstacles that have prevented progress in fighting the fentanyl crisis. time is now 658. the marin county board of supervisors just made some history. [applause] that's brian colbert sworn in as the first african-american member of the board since it was founded 173 years ago. his daughter was there as he took the oath of office. colbert is an attorney. he's a former san anselmo town council member. now he represents district two, which includes san anselmo, as
