crackdown. >> this is ktvu, fox two news at 730. >> good evening, i'm greg lee. we begin with the trump administration moving quickly to act on the president's immigration plan. the pentagon announced it will send 1500 active duty service members to the u.s. mexico border by the end of the month. they'll join the roughly 2500 national guard and reserve forces already there. the troops will fly helicopters to assist border patrol agents and help in the construction of barriers. president trump signed an executive order this week giving the military a role in immigration enforcement. california attorney general rob bonta says he'll take legal action against any effort to use state law enforcement to carry out president trump's agenda on immigration. bonta said in a statement, quote, california law is clear s.b. 54 prohibits state and local law enforcement from using taxpayer funds to enforce federal immigration law, subject to several narrow exceptions. he

said that the state law has already been upheld in court in oakland's fruitvale neighborhood today, east bay leaders and immigration activists came together to declare what they will fight against, what they call dangerous and unlawful raids. >> whatever trump says or threatens, we are a sanctuary city. we are a sanctuary state. >> immigration attorneys tell ktvu they've had conversations about these changes since the november election. they want to remind people you do not have to show citizens citizenship papers when asked, and you do not need to open doors to federal agents if they do not have a warrant. earlier today on the four, we spoke with immigration law professor bill hing, who said he is seeing a lot of anxiety in the community. >> as soon as you start seeing some ice actions in various parts of the country, you're going to see more and more parents not sending their children to school. you're going to see more and more parents hesitant to go to work. you're. i think that some folks are

contemplating leaving the united states, and maybe that's a victory from the trump camp. >> professor hing said that anyone who is concerned about their immigration status should contact one of the many bay area groups offering consultation with an expert about ways to get lawful resident status in half moon bay. the former mayor says some workers are not showing up at local businesses because they're afraid of being detained. ktvu jana katsuyama reports on the actions nonprofit groups are taking to help people. >> tucked away off the road in half moon bay, staff with the nonprofit alas visited farm workers. >> we need to know that they're not alone, that we're standing with them, and we're here to work together. >> their farmworker outreach team says people are concerned over president trump's executive orders and changes in immigration policy, calling for deportations. community activists have been distributing information and red cards with

legal information about rights in english and spanish. >> the card pretty much gives you your rights, you know, to stay silent. don't answer any questions. if you're detained, ask for an immigration attorney and don't sign any documents. >> joaquin jimenez, former mayor of half moon bay, says the fear is real. and on wednesday, he says he got calls of workers afraid to come to work. >> at a local restaurant. you know, did not open then other restaurants. some of the workers did not show up. or children, you know, are very worried about what could happen if it happens, the parents being detained, what's going to happen to the children? >> this worker says he has been in the u.s. for 25 years. a landscape worker with a family. >> i do landscaping and it's been difficult to find employment. it's been a while since we had a good work in the area. >> he worries about his sons, age 21 and 15, both born here, and u.s. citizens under the birthright laws that president trump says he will try to

remove. adding to the fears, allah says they received a threatening postcard this week saying, quote, pack your bags. trump's coming. it was postmarked from oakland and said there is nowhere to hide. with a phone number and website for ice. >> we were all just horrified, like we are already feeling very vulnerable. the community is feeling scared. there's a lot of emotions that's running high and it's an emotional time. >> says that right now they are working to try and see if they can get immigration attorneys here along the coast to try and help people in areas that are farther away from the urban centers. reporting from half moon bay jana katsuyama, ktvu, fox two news. >> we have immigration resources on our website. we've also compiled a list of rapid response networks in the bay area and california that can help during an emergency. you can find this information and more@ktvu.com. we're following breaking news in southern california, where the hughes fire continues to grow in the mountains north of los angeles

near castaic. i want to give you a live look at the fire burning in la and ventura counties. within hours, that fire exploded in size to more than 9000 acres. more than 50,000 people are under evacuation orders or warnings tonight in those counties. inmates from a nearby jail complex are also being evacuated. you can see those flames on the hillside burning bright tonight. firefighters are attacking those flames from the air and ground, trying to prevent the wind driven fire from moving across interstate five. >> the situation remains dynamic and the fire remains a difficult fire to contain. although we are getting the upper hand. >> unfortunately, when we talk about fires. our staff knows that immediately they start what we call looter suppression, just to make sure that no one's coming into the area to take advantage. >> there are no reports so far of any structures that have burned. again, right now there is no containment on this fire. the chief said that the gusty

weather is expected to last through friday morning, leaving a lot of residents nervous. >> we are just hosing our house like, put as much water as we can because we cannot even. i think we need to leave soon. so we're just making sure that before we leave that at least our essential and at least protect our house a little bit. >> i mean, obviously there's a fire very close to my house. i'm working on packing up all my stuff to get out of here, and some folks showed up from my insurance company, apparently usaa. my wife's working to verify that with them right now, but they're still coating my house to help protect it from the fire in case in case it gets close. i'm still concerned. i mean, we can see active flames up on the hills over here, so there's true concern. i have not i haven't been this nervous about a fire, ever. >> the hughes fire is just one of the new fires that started in southern california today. the second one forcing evacuations in san diego county. but good

news forward progress of that fire has since been stopped. firefighters down south battling red flag conditions tonight. meteorologist mark tamayo here mark that wind continuing to fan these flames. >> yeah the wind in fact actually expected to pick up tonight into tomorrow. so that's going to be a big challenge for the fire crews once again in southern california as they battle this fire with extreme fire growth today. take a look at the this picture from earlier today. you can see just this plume and all being pushed by strong offshore winds. you can see basically from there's the initial starting point then being pushed out to the west with those santa ana winds developing. so this fire, which started at 1053 this morning, is at over 9000 acres. so just to just extreme fire growth here, you can get the idea of the location there to the north of santa clarita. and we'll show you some of the current wind reports right now and still some gusts with warm springs at one site showing you gusts to 30 miles an hour and whittaker peak gusting to 28. relative humidity. the moisture is so low

down into the single digits around 7 to 8%. now, in the short term, we have a high wind warning that goes into effect. not a wind advisory, but a high wind warning. this is 10:00 tonight until 2 p.m. thursday. winds could be gusting over 50 miles an hour for the higher peaks of southern california. and then we also have this. we've been talking so much about red flag fire warnings, and this one has been extended until 10:00 friday morning. and winds, as we showed, you could be going up there and still a very dry weather pattern. so you can see this widespread area here, including the fire zone close to santa clarita showing you this, the wind forecast model. you see those winds do well. pulse up later on tonight into tomorrow. once again, these are winds out of the northeast and then still windy to breezy to windy into your thursday night, but then will gradually scale back on those wind speeds late thursday and into friday. lot to clear skies for us here in the bay area with the clear skies. another chilly evening out there after a fairly nice afternoon. right now we have some 40s already in fairfield, san francisco 55 and san jose 61

degrees. here's our live camera looking above san francisco, still in the clear, no fog to speak of. and another frost advisory tomorrow morning for the north bay valleys and the inland valleys. not as cold tomorrow morning, but still pretty chilly out there. we could have some patchy frost and temperatures will be in the 30s and the 40s to start out the day. so it's the same story. our dry weather pattern will continue after that cold start tomorrow morning. lots of sunshine into the afternoon hours for your thursday. some mild readings out there. here's the change into the weekend. we're definitely tracking a cooldown and some gusty winds and the slight chance of a shower for us as we head toward sunday morning. here's the forecast model. as you can see here. some friday clouds and then into the weekend you can see some, maybe some snow out toward the sierra. the best chance of some showers actually down to our south in southern california. and that could be on sunday. highs for tomorrow will be in the 60s to the low 70s. a mild afternoon after that chilly start. and the look ahead. we'll bring in some more clouds on

friday, a cooler saturday, a slight chance of a shower sunday morning, and then fair skies into monday. but no major storms to talk about in our five day forecast. just a bit of a cooldown this weekend. >> all right. looks good mark. thank you. some republican state lawmakers say money earmarked for high speed rail would be better spent on wildfire prevention. tulare assembly member alexandra macedo introduced a bill today. to that end, it would redirect $1 billion in annual state funding for the bullet train to pay for forest management and water infrastructure. macedo called high speed rail a colossal failure, saying the money would be better spent on protecting lives, homes and jobs. still to come here at 7.30, student protesters at uc berkeley claimed trustees violated their own rules. details coming up. and outrage from sonoma state university students as the school plans major cuts. collegiate sports and academic

today, claims the uc berkeley foundation trustees violated its own policies to block arms divestment. the uc berkeley students for justice in palestine looked at two documents about the divestment task force's work. the report shows task force members were barred from accessing company information that could qualify the company for divestment. now, the student group claims the vote to retain $15 million in holdings is illegitimate and is calling for the immediate divestment from weapons companies. uc berkeley tells ktvu the foundation operates independently from the campus and deferred to the foundation's decision. report. major layoffs and changes are coming to sonoma

state university, as the school attempts to fix a nearly $24 million deficit. today, the university announced plans to lay off 46 faculty members, eliminating several academic departments and degree majors. it will also discontinue its intercollegiate athletics that includes all teams, coaches, trainers and staff. one student on the baseball team says the news impacts his whole college career. >> one of the big reasons why i'm here at sonoma state is for athletics, and it's for baseball. if i wasn't playing baseball, perhaps i may have chosen a different university. >> in an email that went out today, the school's interim president said a 38% enrollment decline since 2015 is the main factor behind the deficit. students have expressed outrage over the major cuts. we'll have more reaction tonight on the 10:00 news. the san francisco coroner's office has identified the man killed in sunday's multi-car crash. 27 year old michael romanenko was killed

when a tesla smashed into a row of vehicles stopped in traffic. a dog was also killed and seven other people were hospitalized. 66 year old glenn zhang was allegedly behind the wheel of the tesla and is now in custody. chp is investigating whether he is also connected to a hit and run crash on the nearby 280 offramp. a new development in the death of corazon dandan, the woman killed when she was pushed in front of a train at a san francisco bart station. her family is now suing the transit agency, claiming more could have been done to protect her. in july, the 74 year old victim was heading home from work when she was pushed into an oncoming train, hitting her head as she fell onto the platform. the lawsuit claims the man who pushed her, 49 year old trevor belmont, had been banned by bart for repeatedly jumping the fare gates, a ban, the suit says, was not enforced. >> it is appalling. bart is on notice. you have to stop and make these trains and stations safe for riders.

the thrive city snake features warriors gold and blue and a basketball with three stars to symbolize the franchise hosting its third nba all star game, and the union square snake will also showcase nba all star elements with all star cable car coins and a trail of stars from head to tail. you can see also has a gold coin on its tongue to symbolize good fortune. each statue was designed by a local artist. they will be up until march 2nd. the chinese chamber of commerce is busy organizing san francisco's annual chinese new year festival and parade, set for february 15th. ktvu christien kafton brings us a look at the preparations underway to welcome the year of the snake. >> work to prepare san francisco's chinatown for year of the snake celebrations is already underway. tane chan from the walk shop on grant street in the heart of chinatown, said so far, she's not seen a dramatic increase in business, but also said in years past, customers buy new year's food and gifts

closer to the holiday. >> i'm always looking forward to chinese new year because chinatown gets a little bit more festive. >> organizers of this year's chinese new year festivities say the excitement for the annual celebration is building. the festivities culminate with the parade on february 15th. community leaders said chinatown is starting to see the beginnings of an economic comeback. >> we are finally getting back to that pre-pandemic energy that we had. i think the parade this year is going to be unbelievable. >> they said the new year celebrations traditionally bring an influx of money to local businesses. >> i can say economically, for many merchants in chinatown, this is the best month of the year. it's for some businesses, generate as much as a third of their annual revenue. >> customers say they see vibrant streets when they walk through chinatown. >> absolutely. the mei mei hotel is like two blocks down, and i was like, i'm so excited because i'm right next to chinatown. >> actually, we are seeing a lot

webinar on january 29th for applicants to learn more about the process. deadline to apply is february 19th at 5 p.m. the oakland roots and soul soccer club is changing its strategy as the team looks for a new, permanent home. the roots say they plan to make the coliseum their short term home beyond 2025, and therefore are abandoning plans for a temporary site near the coliseum in the nine acre malibu parking lot. the team has also submitted plans for a 25,000 seat stadium at the howard terminal near jack london square, but that proposed venue has quite a few hurdles to clear and would not be built for several years. baseball hall of famer tony la russa is putting on a star studded concert this weekend to raise money for his family's new nonprofit, aimed at helping lost and abandoned pets in shelters. the concert is set for saturday at the lesher center in walnut creek. some of the artists playing are the boxmasters and counting crows frontman adam duritz. proceeds will go toward la russa rescue
