win 6 to 5, and that wraps things up for sports on this thursday night. the 11:00 news with mike starts right now. >> the 11:00 news on ktvu. fox two starts now. >> and good evening everyone. i'm mike mibach. right now to our top stories at 11. federal agents already starting to enforce president donald trump's new mass deportation policy. according to ice, officers made 538 arrests just today in various cities across the country. here in the bay area, cities and organizations are bracing for mass deportations. tonight in san jose, dozens of people packed a community center for a roundtable discussion about the trump administration. many community members expressing fear over the new immigration policies. tonight, people gathered in half moon bay to honor the seven farm workers who were gunned down by a coworker two years ago. farm worker advocates say the investigation into the shooting revealed deplorable living

conditions. but in the past two years, they say there has been change, including providing workers with more mental health services and construction of new affordable housing. and in san francisco, a woman is grieving the loss of her boyfriend and dog, who were killed in a multi-vehicle crash over the weekend. as ktvu amber lee reports tonight, the woman was in the passenger seat at the time of the collision and was just released from the hospital. >> he was a ball of joy. >> lynn lou is talking about her boyfriend, misha romanenko, who died in a multi vehicle crash this past weekend in san francisco. she describes the software engineer as being kind, smart and romantic. >> i feel like i'm in a really bad dream and i'm trying to wake up from, and i'm trying to wake up so that i can see him and hug him. >> lynn tells me. on sunday around 6 p.m, misha was driving with her and their beloved dog keeper on interstate 280,

heading toward downtown san francisco, and took the sixth and harrison exit. they were on their way to pick up family members to take them to sfo when the crash happened. she says she never felt the impact. she blacked out. >> i was on a gurney and i was being wheeled into different doors. >> lynn says when she regained consciousness, she instinctively knew the man she described as the love of her life and their dog had died. >> you can feel their energy, and i didn't feel this. i couldn't feel keeper. >> according to law enforcement, the driver of a black tesla was involved in a four car collision on interstate 280 near the sixth street exit and took off, and a minute later, paramedics responded to a crash at the intersection of sixth and harrison that mangled seven vehicles. lynn shared this photo of what their lexus sedan looked like after the crash. she was among the seven people injured. she says she suffers from a concussion, broken bones and

underwent two surgeries. lynn says she wanted to attend funeral services for misha and their dog, so she left the hospital wednesday but plans to return for treatment. police say the 66 year old driver who caused the crash was allegedly speeding. he was taken into custody but was released from jail on wednesday. the district attorney said in part it is critical that we take the time to diligently comb through all the evidence and gather as much information as possible so that we're able to make the correct charging decision. >> he took away it took away a really, really great person. >> lynn says she wants justice for misha, and she's focused on keeping his memory alive. she and friends say misha will be remembered for his ever present smile. >> i want his legacy of having a kind heart. >> lynn tells me misha loves sunsets and he loved life.

private funeral services will be held for the 27 year old friday in san francisco. amber lee, ktvu, fox two news. >> tonight, the oakland police commission hosted a special meeting to further discuss possible changes to the city's pursuit policy. police chief floyd mitchell did speak at the meeting and listed his department's proposed changes to the policy, which do include rescinding the 50 mile per hour threshold and allowing officers to pursue suspects involved in property crimes and possible sideshow activity. right now, oakland police are only allowed to pursue if there is a reasonable suspicion that a person committed a violent crime. chief mitchell says it is time to review and reevaluate the policy, but adds that more feedback is necessary. >> my memo outlines substantive changes to the current policy that need to be vetted by everyone. the draft complete policy revision has several

changes and is in no way a final product. >> chief mitchell goes on to say feedback from the city attorney, the police officers association and the community will be necessary in order to make changes. the police commission will now review the chief's proposals and then provide feedback. now to southern california. the huge fire burning near castaic is 39% contained this evening. that fire quickly exploded in size just yesterday afternoon. it does remain about 10,000 acres in the first 23 days of this year, nearly 51,000 acres have burned across the state. today, governor newsom signing a $2.5 billion fire relief package for los angeles county. allow us to deal with the most immediate, which is making sure that the neighborhoods are safe in terms of the debris, the hazardous waste. you know, that we're going to have rains this weekend, so the money will be able will allow us. we know the money will be reimbursed by fema, but it will allow us to not wait to move ahead and to

get the neighborhoods ready. >> all right. let's talk about the weather, because la could actually get some rain this coming weekend, sparking concerns about mud and debris flow. state officials are deploying additional resources to burn scar areas. president trump plans to visit los angeles county tomorrow afternoon, and this comes as he continues to threaten to withhold federal relief money, as ktvu is, lamonica peters reports tonight. governor newsom says he's grateful the president is visiting the state in what is his first official trip of his second term. >> i'm glad he's coming out here. i'm grateful that the president is taking the time. i hope he does take the time to listen to the folks impacted directly by these wildfires. >> governor newsom says. >> despite disagreeing on multiple issues with trump and filing lawsuits against policies, the trump administration wants to implement, now isn't the time to play politics. he spoke during a press conference thursday in los angeles. still, on wednesday,

during an interview with sean hannity, president trump implied that he may withhold federal aid from california unless there are changes made to the way water is managed. >> i don't think we should give california anything until they let water flow down into their state from the north to the south. >> i don't mean it in a malign sense. maybe the president just doesn't know that there's not a spigot that can be turned to solve all the water problems that he alleges exist, that don't exist as it relates to the state water system here in southern california. >> menlo college political science professor melissa michaelson says historically, natural disasters bring people together, including state and federal leaders, who may benefit from putting their differences aside. >> and so i think that the president is coming, that he's going to be boots on the ground, that he's going to be touring the damage. it would be difficult, i think, in terms of public perception and his image to then not deliver federal aid. >> newsom signed an aid package

open for business, calling the plan conference return a huge vote of confidence. there has been an interesting addition to some of the streets of san francisco, illegally painted red zones popping up around the city, and now city officials are trying to figure out who's behind them. ktvu christien kafton has the story. >> parking in san francisco is notoriously difficult. now it appears someone is making it even harder for some neighbors. photos posted on reddit show that someone has been painting curbs red in the area of balboa street and 18th avenue, eliminating about a dozen parking spaces in the neighborhood. gabriel armstrong said he noticed a sudden shortage of parking. >> lots like two weeks ago. we were kind of expecting some sort of painting going on because of the new california law about right hand turn and the 20ft, but this was a lot longer than 20ft, and it didn't look quite right. >> the painting does seem to have coincided with california's new day lighting law aimed at protecting pedestrians. the law makes it illegal to park 20ft

from crosswalks. it seems that whoever has painted the curbs in san francisco has taken that to heart. and then some, in some cases extending the red zones way more than the 20ft the law requires, and even adding realistic looking sfmta stenciling. it's all left drivers confused. >> yeah, it's weird, for sure it does it. like you said, there's not really an end game to it. you know? no one can park there. it doesn't really help the neighborhood out a lot. >> gabby arroyo also noticed the sudden extension of those red zones. >> the first one i noticed was over there and it was just way bigger than any like i knew they were changing sidewalk law, so i just thought it was part of that change. >> san francisco's municipal transportation agency released a statement saying that the agency is aware of the curb painting and going on to say, quote, responding to these incidents is stretching our resources thin and causing confusion among residents to comply with the state's daylighting law. we need to be focusing our limited

resources where they matter most, which is most immediately in school zones to provide safe crossing to kids. ultimately, neighbors have been left puzzled as to why someone would do this. it does not appear that someone did it to save a parking space for themselves. neighbors say all that it's done is make it harder for everyone looking for parking. >> i've seen people put cones to like, try to save a spot for themselves, but i've never seen actually painting the sidewalk. >> at this point, we are not aware of any criminal investigation into the painting. we did contact sfpd who told me that so far they have not received any vandalism reports from the area in san francisco, christien kafton, ktvu, fox two news. >> still to come at 11, a gruesome discovery in san joaquin county. the woman accused of animal neglect after dozens of dead horses were found on her properties and rising concerns in the north bay. the major budget crisis facing one district as school closures are

horses, a cow and a dog were all found dead across three of jan johnson's properties. this was after. animal service officers were called to perform a welfare check. 95 horses and three alpacas were rescued, but several had to be put down. >> first got there. there were four horses and one bull euthanized. by last night there was 26. there was nine horses and one donkey that had to be euthanized. >> and that was because they were so malnourished. >> yeah, that there was no hope for them, unfortunately. >> johnson is being charged with cruelty to an animal, threatening a public official, criminal threats, and possession of a short barreled shotgun. she's been released on bail and is scheduled to be in court tomorrow. the man accused of killing four university of idaho students back in 2022 returned to the courtroom today. at the hearing, brian kohberger's attorneys fought for nearly all the evidence collected to be thrown out. they say police illegally obtained his dna through genetic genealogy and

argued evidence was illegally collected from kohberger's digital history. however, prosecutors say there is nothing unconstitutional about the evidence. >> talking about a murder scene in a house to which he is asserted no connection whatsoever for victims, to which he has asserted no connection whatsoever. we're not just talking about his dna happened to be found in a dresser drawer or something. it was found on a knife sheath wre four people were killed by a knife. >> this hearing is expected to continue tomorrow. now to alaska, where a piece of the state's history is set to hit the auction block. a 14 carat gold spike driven into the final coupling of the alaska railroad in 1923, will go to the highest bidder tomorrow. you can see from this post on the christie's auction house website. the relic is expected to go for tens of thousands of dollars. president harding had the honor of driving this spike on the alaska railroad. completion of the

now i'm smelling like perspirant! i did, for its 24/7 sweat protection. you did this to my pits. ♪ nearly $3 billion hit in the fourth quarter. this is in large part due to a labor strike, job cuts, and problems with a number of government programs. boeing says it will report a loss of $5.46 a share next week, when it issues its full financial results. that's much higher than what was expected on wall street. the sizable loss ends a tough year for the company. stocks were higher on wall street today, with the s&p 500 actually setting a new record. the dow gaining more than 408 points. the nasdaq was up 44. the s&p adding 32 points for a new record close. netflix, by the way, helped to lift the market. shares of the los gatos company were up another 3% today after rising nearly 10%

yesterday on better than expected profits. starbucks will soon be cutting jobs at the corporate level as the company implements changes to bolster lagging sales and improve profitability. the ceo, brian niccol, announcing the forthcoming cuts in a letter to employees. they were also posted on the starbucks website. the cuts are part of a series of changes announced last year that aim to enhance customer in store experience. starbucks says the cuts will not affect in-store teams. nicole says the company will provide further information in the month of march. >> all righty. checking in on the weather. we had a beautiful warm day today. we talked about that. we had temperatures in the 70s, mid 70s, almost san jose 74 degrees. your friday is going to be a little cooler. some clouds come in and then there's a weather system behind those clouds that shows up on saturday and sunday. and that weather system does a move where it just kind of cools us off. maybe there's a you'll see chances of sprinkles here and there, but it would not be much because it's a

cold system. it's pretty dry. you'll see it in the model coming up. these are the forecast highs for tomorrow. and this is outside now. no frost advisories or freeze warnings tonight which is the first time we've not seen one in a little while. we've had some really cold nights. it'll be cold again tonight and they'll be frost and freezing. but this high pressure is the reason it's been dry. you know that all too well. same with southern california. but this low right comes off the kind of off the continent which is colder air typically misses us kind of with its main dynamics, but does hit southern california with some significant. yeah, i'd call it significant for southern california, maybe a quarter inch half inch of rain, which would be awesome for the fire zones. and then lake tahoe could easily see 3 or 4in of snow, which would be great. so that's saturday and sunday. so if i'm planning my weekend, i don't change a thing. i just keep going with it. don't worry about it. i mean, if you got a golf game lined up or something you're going to see on your iphone, you're going to see a chance of sprinkles. but don't sweat it. it's not going to be much of anything, and it

potential school closures and consolidations. ktvu zac sos attended the meeting and explains what families say is at stake for their children. >> as a parent, it makes you very anxious. >> a packed gym at santa rosa high school thursday. >> we shouldn't have to go through this. >> parents. students eager to weigh in as the school district considers how to close a $20 million budget deficit. >> my senior could potentially being told he needs to have his senior year at a different school with different friends. that's not what we planned for him. >> this is the last in a series of town halls held by the district. current options on the table include a mix of closures and consolidations. >> i think that they could do better at budgeting and making sure that this doesn't happen. >> a plan to reintroduce school resource officers to the classroom. following a series of violent incidents at several city campuses, now also potentially in limbo. >> i think our children need to be safe. i don't know if that's the right avenue, but they need to explore what is the right avenue. >> in a statement to ktvu on

thursday, the district saying in part, quote, ensuring the safety of our students, families and campuses is our top priority. our board of trustees is continuing their collaboration with the city of santa rosa to craft a memorandum of understanding that would bring school resource officers to our campuses as a pilot program back at the town hall. students and their families heading to breakout rooms to mull for potential plans to meet the budget shortfall. >> money is a major driver of this whole force, and we have no information at all on the financial impact of any of these. >> santa rosa city schools, weighing its options in the face of declining student enrollment and the loss of covid era federal funds. >> i think we're in a reality where we're just going to have to learn how to do more with less. >> despite the challenges, assistant superintendent roderick castro says he wants parents to know teachers and staff are doing everything they can to ensure their students success. >> we just got our scores back. we have the highest graduation rate that we've ever had at
