newsom greeted the president at the airport, but the governor reportedly was not invited onto the president's tour. ktvu baylee o'carroll has been following the latest developments and joins us now with some of the highlights of the president's visit. baylee. >> hey, greg. yeah, you mentioned gavin newsom joining him there, meeting him on the tarmac when he landed at lax this afternoon. what was expected to be a tense visit between the president and state and local leaders started off smooth. again, the two of them meeting shaking hands as trump landed when he landed. that was until the mood shifted during a roundtable with other state and local leaders. california governor gavin newsom there to greet president trump after he landed at lax friday afternoon. the two shaking hands saying they're committed to fire recovery. >> i have all the expectations that we'll be able to work together to get this speedy recovery. >> but newsom was noticeably absent from a roundtable held with the president and state and local leaders. the roundtable was heated and tense. >> you're going to see us

>> washington for the confirmation. >> hearings of president trump's cabinet picks. in a joint statement, senators alex padilla and adam schiff said, quote, while his continued comments threatening conditions on federal aid and to eliminate fema are deeply concerning, we remain hopeful this visit moves the president and congress closer to focus on relief over partizanship. the president has repeatedly threatened to withhold federal aid unless certain conditions are met. the governor pushing back on trump's claims the fires were mismanaged. ktvu jana katsuyama reports on the political fight over disaster aid. >> on friday, president trump suggested that federal aid might be conditional on california changing policies on water and voter ids. >> in california, i have a condition in california. we want them to have voter id so the people have a voice, because right now the people don't have a voice because you don't know who's voting. >> california governor gavin newsom, who defended california policies during the first trump administration, quickly replied with this post. newsom said, quote, conditioning aid for american citizens is wrong.

fact. under current california law, you must be a california resident and u.s. citizen and provide id. president trump also blamed state water policy for not providing sufficient water to l.a, causing fire hydrant problems during the l.a. fires. >> if they release the water when i told them to because i told them to do it seven years ago, if they would have done it, you wouldn't have had the problem that you had. you might have you might not have even had a fire. >> l.a. officials say that claim is false. and the cause was that the massive fires drained local water storage faster than they could be replenished. >> the state water project has nothing to do with water supplies. it relates to water suppression for municipal systems. the state reservoirs are at or near record highs. >> trump also took aim at fema. >> i think we're going to recommend that fema go away and we pay directly. we pay a percentage to the state, but the state should fix this. >> recovery is block grant

funding. so to be able to do that in the recovery operations and be able to have the states take a larger role in that is very efficient and effective. >> mark navarro, a former presidential fema appointee, says while rethinking fema disaster relief might be useful, eliminating fema would deprive states of important disaster response tools. >> trouble is that you have to have people on a moment's notice to be able to go to anywhere in the country and provide secure communications, urban search and rescue teams, water rescue teams, you know, satellite communications. have fema totally eliminated? we won't have the ability to have those resources on a moment's notice. that's the key. >> navarro says that large states such as california and texas have robust emergency response networks, but it's the smaller states that could be hurt the most if trump eliminates fema. reporting from the newsroom jana katsuyama, ktvu fox two news. >> crews continue to make progress on the l.a. fires. the

palisades fire is now 79% contained after burning 23,000 acres. the eaton fire in altadena is 95% contained after burning 14,000 acres, and the hughes fire near castaic lake is 79% contained. tonight. after charring 10,000 acres. together, the fires have burned more than 50,000 acres since they began earlier this month. at least 28 people have died in the two largest fires. more than 16,000 homes and other structures are confirmed to be destroyed. the focus now shifts toward rebuilding, according to the los angeles economic development corporation, the fires have amassed a staggering $53.8 billion in property damage, as well as $2.9 billion in economic loss. some business owners say, while they're standing by their community, the wildfires have certainly taken their toll. >> business has dropped about 50 to 60% over the past like ten days, so it's been really rough for business, and we're just trying to be here as much as we

can for the community. >> governor gavin newsom has announced $2.5 billion in relief for wildfire assistance. rain this weekend is a hopeful sight for fire crews, but it also brings the potential for mudslides as some southern california residents make it back home after the devastating fires. some residents thankful they actually have a home to come back to. coming up at 1030, we'll hear from one resident who traveled to the bay area today to give a personal thank you to a san francisco fire crew that helped save their home. new at ten, a community coming together for a second night to remember seven half moon bay farm workers shot and killed two years ago by a coworker. the vigil, organized by farm worker advocacy group. a loss spilling out tonight onto a city block in downtown ktvu. zac sos attended the memorial. zach, an emotional night for sure. >> yeah, greg. and while it's been ten years since the tragedy, those attending say the pain from that day, it is still very fresh. this is a tight knit community of farm workers.

the day of the shooting still fresh in her mind. >> actual farm worker team was on site at one of the farms just an hour before the tragedy. and we're just in disbelief, distraught. >> in the wake of the tragedy. photos surfacing from the farm, placing a spotlight on the deplorable living conditions faced by a large number of farm workers in the city. >> i think our local elected officials have definitely stepped up. >> the county has done a lot and the city has done a lot, and all of us has done a lot. >> area farm workers now offered better access to mental health services, and new affordable housing is in the works, with units reserved for the victims families. >> we've been working very closely with the county, with the city, to really just hold tight. you know, all the families that were affected as a result of this tragedy. >> olvidada de la tierra y los. >> yeah, as you heard there,

organizers pointing to perhaps something good that has come amid this tragedy. while they make sure that the victims families continue to get the support they need. greg. >> incredible resilience from this community. zac sos live in half moon bay for us tonight. zach. thank you. earlier in the day, advocates focused on the issue of substandard housing for farm workers. new housing is under construction in half moon bay, including a complex known as 880 stone pine, which will have 47 units, which is expected to open in may. a city owned property nearby will be converted into another 40 units of farmworker housing for senior farm workers who work into their 70s or 80s. >> people often say retired farm workers, and that's sort of a misnomer, as most farm workers do not have full on 401 k and retirement plans that allow them to retire in any kind of comfort. have leaders in the farmworker movement say several things are different about half moon bay. many farm workers here are multigenerational and stay

in the community. rather than being transitional seasonal workers. we're following some developing news tonight, a flaring at the martinez refining company plant. the refinery's operator says it's reported flaring just before 5:00 this afternoon. people near the refinery may smell an odor or see visible flames, but there is no otherwise no significant threat to the public. the martinez refining company says it has notified contra costa health of the incident. a false alarm treated as a real learning experience. coming up next. what immigration advocates hope the bay area can learn about the latest story involving ice agents in san francisco. the president's immigration plan. some have already taken effect across the country, with migrant deportation flights underway. border patrol sources say each plane carries 80 people. the first flight took off from biggs army airfield in el paso, texas, headed for guatemala. ice says federal agents have made more than 500 arrests focused on migrants with a known criminal history.

>> allowed people to come in at levels that nobody's ever seen before. it was really an invasion. we will not allow our territory to be violated after four long years. >> fear has ramped up in sanctuary cities such as san francisco, as ice agents are now allowed to conduct arrests inside schools, hospitals and churches. the u.s. border has seen a drop in migrant encounters since president trump took office. they are down 35% from the final days of the biden administration amid president trump's immigration policies. a false alarm about an immigration enforcement officer approaching a minor on a san francisco bus has fueled anxiety in communities, ktvu christien kafton reports. the incident is now serving as an example for immigration advocates, as they teach people what to do in the event of a real situation with agents. >> the story spread like wildfire. a visitacion valley middle school student said they were approached on a muni bus by an immigration and customs enforcement officer on thursday. san francisco unified schools

confirmed the incident was reported, and that the district was working to determine if it had really happened. muni has now been able to determine that the claim was false, but the fear it left behind is real. >> i want to say that it's very real and valid that our community members, whether they're minors or adults, are feeling a lot of fear right now around the possibilities of ice, detentions and even mass raids. >> sonika mahajan from mission action leads the city's rapid response network, a hotline that immigrants or anyone who witnesses immigration officials conducting sweeps can call. she said contacting the rapid response network is a critical first step. >> if anybody sees or knows somebody who has been detained by ice, they should call the rapid response hotline at (415) 200-1548. and if they do see ice activity, we really ask that they do their best to take a photo or video from a safe distance so that we can verify this activity actually occurred. >> san francisco city leaders are also responding to the false

alarm. supervisor shamann walton released a statement saying his office was monitoring developments and offering tips, including reminding immigrants of their right to remain silent and to not open the door without a warrant and to contact the rapid response network. mayor daniel lurie's office also released a statement saying the mayor's office is confident there was no federal immigration enforcement action on muni. the mayor's office also reaffirmed the mayor's commitment to sanctuary city policies, saying, quote, their purpose is not to interfere with immigration enforcement, but to ensure that all residents can feel safe interacting with local law enforcement and accessing city services. these laws have been on the books for decades, and we will continue to uphold and defend the general prohibition of the use of city resources to assist ice in enforcing federal immigration actions. while the incident here in san francisco proved to be a false alarm, chicago public schools said that ice agents did show up at hamlin elementary school friday morning. staff at the school there say the agents did not access the school or speak with

students or staff, but the incident does highlight that the same thing could happen just about anywhere in san francisco. christien kafton, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right, let's talk about our bay area weather with meteorologist mark tamayo. mark, we're going to talk about something we have not in a very long time, which is the chance of some rain. >> yeah, it's in fact, it's been three weeks since we had some rainfall here in the bay area, and now we have a cold chain setting up into the weekend. so get ready. beginning tomorrow, you'll notice a change in temperatures. take a look here. we'll just show you one. one run of the forecast model does bring in some rain and sierra snowfall. and look where that rain is moving toward. down towards southern california, down toward the fire zones, especially by the sunday period. for us this weekend, we do have a sun cloud mix. there is the chance of a shower tomorrow. winds will be picking up and then into sunday we'll hold on to that possibility of a lingering shower primarily into the morning hours. temperatures mainly in the 50s all weekend long now. cold enough that we do have this tomorrow morning. a frost advisory for the north bay valleys and the inland valleys.

♪ county are releasing details about last month's shooting in oroville at the seventh day adventist school that left two children seriously hurt. detectives say they now know suspect glenn linton stayed at motels in chico for more than a week before the december 4th shooting. he also visited a computer repair store december 3rd to get the hard drive of his computer destroyed. that drive is now at the fbi, but it is unlikely they will recover any data. authorities shot and killed the suspect, leaving little evidence for investigators to determine a

motive. >> what dots he connected in his own mind. that would have justified again in his mind, his actions based on his grievances. i don't think that anyone will ever know. >> authorities also shared the suspect was arrested in san mateo in november for having a fake id and a stolen u-haul. after eight days in jail, he was then sent to san bernardino, where he was wanted in connection with a burglary. one of president trump's biggest decisions of his second term came on his first day in office, when he pardoned nearly everyone who attacked the capitol back in 2021. some of those defendants from right here in the bay area. ktvu henry lee has that story. >> retired santa clara engineer patrick borns got four months in federal prison after pleading guilty to taking part in the u.s. capitol invasion. the fbi says these photos show borns confronting police officers in a tunnel in washington, d.c, on january 6th, 2021. but now borns and many other bay area residents are among hundreds of

so-called j. six participants who have been pardoned by president trump. dike huish is an attorney who represented borns and other j six defendants. >> he's a responsible, patriotic american and i'm glad, and i know he's happy that he has received this pardon and will be restored to his full rights. >> deneen mcandrew, of orange county, spent more than two months at the now closed federal prison in dublin for her role in the invasion. >> our cases were tried differently from other cases and i believe we were treated unfairly. i believe we were overcharged. >> trump's executive order also led a judge on wednesday, just nine days after the case was filed, to toss charges against frank giorgi jr, who helps run molinari salami in san francisco. david lim, a former prosecutor and defense attorney, says trump has the power to pardon but that the blanket nature of it all is concerning. >> because it doesn't seem to be well thought out. it seems to kind of cast a very wide net for purely political purposes. >> former fbi agent andrew black

to contain a wildfire burning near the california-mexico border. it's being called the border two fire and is burning on otay mountain, just a few miles north of the border with tijuana. it started yesterday afternoon and has now burned more than 6200 acres, and it's 10% contained. there are no reports of any damage to homes or other structures. evacuation orders are in place for smaller communities to the east. firefighters are making progress on full containment of the wildfires in l.a. county. the palisades and hughes fires are each 79% contained tonight, while the eaton fire is now 95% contained. crews are preparing for the possibility of rain this weekend, causing mudslides and debris flow and fire burn scar areas. authorities have set up sandbag stations at fire stations and community centers across l.a. county ahead of the weekend storm, as some residents make their way back home after the devastating wildfires. a southern california survivor is in the bay area with a mission to thank the san francisco

firefighters who saved his home and those of his neighbors. new at ten ktvu amber lee live here in studio. amber, you were there during the man's visit to the fire station there in the bayview neighborhood. >> greg, the survivor tells me the firefighters helped save 17 homes on his block. he wants them to know their efforts during this difficult time are making a difference. >> when the engine 25 was there saving my block. >> eugene kwok, a survivor of the palisades fire, visited station 25 in san francisco to thank the crew that saved his home and his neighbors homes when the fire blazed a trail of destruction. >> a whole block would have burned down if it weren't for them. they, by the time they could get to our block, four houses already burned down. >> kwok, an employee with fox entertainment, which shares the same parent company as ktvu, tells me he was not home at the time. he says thanks to firefighters, his home is still standing, even though it has smoke damage and is

uninhabitable. >> having the house not burn down is a big emotional difference. >> kwok tells me. he made the trip up to the bay area to visit his mother in the peninsula where he grew up, and to show his gratitude to the san francisco fire department. >> mr. kwok, thank you for visiting our fire station. we appreciate it very much. >> the fire chief praised crew members for their kindness and compassion. they left personal notes to let victims know what belongings they found in their homes. >> our performance of our members has been exemplary. >> there's some t-shirts wrapped in there for you. thank you. >> fire officials gifted kwok with station 25 gear. captain jonathan baxter says the department is touched by kwok's appreciation. >> i was really uplifted by his enthusiasm of how his community is going to rebuild together as well. >> baxter says at one point, san francisco had 41 firefighters in southern california, and the crew members who saved kwok's home and those of his neighbors are still there.

war in 1975, april 30th, vietnamese refugees fled in waves to the united states. we are in the second. the largest vietnamese american vietnamese diaspora community within the city boundary here in san jose. and i think since there have been vietnamese americans here, there have been celebrations of death. >> the parade begins at 10:00 tomorrow morning at yerba buena high school. the route will take parade goers to the grand century mall in san jose's little saigon. the festival there will both run both saturday and sunday with music, food and karaoke. it is all free to attend. renovation work has now been completed at santa clara county's largest homeless shelter. a ribbon cutting ceremony was held today at the boccardo reception center on little orchard street in san jose. the renovation work was done with the help of a $150,000 donation from home first and the nonprofit housing industry foundation. the two part renovation project includes more resident privacy, new offices and upgrades to flooring,

pete hegseth has been confirmed as president trump's pick for secretary of defense. the u.s. senate vote ended in a 5050 split just a few hours ago, with vice president jd vance breaking the tie in his role as president of the senate. the close vote comes after a week of uncertainty. yesterday, two republican senators, susan collins of maine and lisa murkowski of alaska, said they could not support hegseth because of a sexual assault allegation. he has denied any wrongdoing. a third republican senator voted no on hegseth confirmation. >> given his lack of experience, it's much more likely that the bureaucracy is going to crush mr. hegseth than he is going to crush the bureaucracy.

sunday will be cooler temperatures. and we've been talking so much about the fires in southern california. the same system will actually produce the most rain down in the fire zone. so we'll have to keep an eye on the rainfall intensity, have to keep an eye on flash flooding and also debris flow. but here's a look at the rainfall expectations right on through the weekend and into early next week. but the bulk of this will be falling on sunday in southern california. back here in the bay area frost advisory right now until right on through your saturday morning for parts of the north bay, the north bay valleys, the inland valleys and temperatures will be in the 30s. we also have a freeze watch, kind of for an extended period of time from saturday night right on through tuesday morning. this will likely be refined a bit to add some more detail to it, but another we could have a stretch of some cold mornings, especially in some of the inland valleys. here's the satellite tonight, where you can see some high clouds that moved into the bay area. this is the upper level wind pattern here. and there's a little bit of a you can see a little bit of a dip in the jet stream. that is the system that's going to move in and cool us off and also bring in that

shower chance. now, right now the radar is fairly quiet. you see the live doppler sweeps out there. but that will be changing tomorrow, especially to the east and to the south of the bay area. as far as current wind reports, not too bad, but all these numbers will be going up a bit into your saturday forecast, and it will be a bit breezy to windy out there. san jose a calm wind right now and sfo a westerly breeze at about ten miles an hour. and here is our live camera looking out toward sfo, where it looks like we still have some clouds in place and current numbers have cooled off into the 40s and the lower 50s. so a bit of a chill in the air first thing tomorrow morning. the coolest locations will be in the 30s, the possibility of some frost. so here's the setup. here's that system. it's going to dive in from the north. this is the cooler pattern that's going to send temperatures down. we'll also have those gusty winds and the chance of some showers this weekend. probably the best chance would be saturday evening right on into sunday morning. here is the updated forecast model showing you this. and there's not a lot of action tomorrow morning at 7:00. once again we have that chilly start

bringing back robert sala to once again be the team's defensive coordinator. 49ers made the announcement early tonight. sala, who was the 49ers defensive coordinator from 17 to 20, is returning after spending the last three seasons as the new head coach of the new york jets, where he led four different players to first team all-pro honors and had a top ten ranked defense in multiple categories. he was fired earlier this season. sala kept his word after reportedly telling the niners if he did not land a head coaching job, he would accept the defensive coordinator role for the red and gold. sala becomes the fourth 49ers dc in four years. former seahawks head coach pete carroll is returning to the nfl. he and the vegas

raiders have agreed to a three year deal. the 73 year old bay area native will become the oldest head coach in nfl history. this will be carroll's 19th season running an nfl team. he won super bowl 48 with the seahawks. he'll be the raiders fifth head coach since they moved to las vegas in 2020. the raiders have also named john spytek as their general manager. he enters his 23rd year in the nfl after spending the last nine seasons with the tampa bay buccaneers. throughout spytek stint with the bucs, he served as the assistant general manager and two roles involving player personnel. the raiders minority owner, tom brady, was spacex teammate at michigan, and the two won super bowl 55 together in the 2020 2021 season, when spytek was the vp of player personnel. when the bucs beat the kansas city chiefs, napa native and rookie sensation brock bowers has been named a finalist for the ap offensive rookie of the year award. bowers was recently named a first team all pro in his historic season.

our top stories tonight. president donald trump landed in southern california today, getting a direct look at the devastation left behind by the palisades fire. governor newsom greeted the president and the first lady at lax this afternoon. the president then met with firefighters on the ground, as well as some people who lost their homes. the president promising a national emergency and 100% support from the federal government in rebuilding efforts. president trump's administration moving forward with his immigration plans, ramping up deportation flights. some of those flights already taking off today. the move is fueling some fear among immigrant communities. the white house says hundreds of people have been detained for deportation this week, and the half moon bay community honoring the lives lost in a mass shooting two years ago, when seven farm workers were killed by a coworker. the memory of that tragedy still at the forefront. tonight's vigil was organized by farmworker advocacy group allies, taking up a city block in downtown half moon bay. new tonight ktvu zac sos
