defendant, david brian pierce. >> we're with one of the grieving families after court. >> i feel like we failed as parents because we couldn't protect her. >> plus, an alabama mom goes missing after fighting with her ex-boyfriend on social media. >> she told me if anything happened to her, check him. >> cops say he took a polygraph and failed. now he's answering our questions. >> i have not done anything. >> thanks for joining us. we begin with a headline making case here in los angeles. a married model and her interior designer friend went out to a party, met a hollywood producer, and wound up dead. they were two young friends living in los angeles who were out for a night on the town. 24 year old kristy giles, a married model from alabama studying interior design, and 26 year old hilda cabrales, an architect who just

moved to california from mexico. in this video posted on hilda's social media, the friends are at a local warehouse party, dancing and enjoying the evening. it would be the last time they were seen alive, leaving a mother grief stricken. >> i feel like we failed as parents because we couldn't protect her. >> and a husband asking questions. >> when she stopped becoming responsive to my messages. it raises alarm bells for me. >> john elías was in san francisco visiting his father, but could see his wife kristy's location at the party on his phone. but it wasn't like her not to respond to his texts. >> at a certain point. the next day, she had moved to a hospital, and at which point i flew back to los angeles to figure out what was going on. >> he got in touch with kristy's mother, dusty giles, in alabama. dusty says she immediately started looking for her

daughter. >> i'm the one that called the hospital and was told over the phone. that my baby was dropped off by masked men, and she was doa on arrival. >> the family would learn that both kristy and hilda were drugged. after being brought to this home in los angeles, and their unconscious bodies were dumped by masked men at separate hospitals. kristy was already dead. hilda was put on life support and died 11 days later. both of the women had multiple drugs present in their system. dusty giles, who is also a nurse, had one message for police. >> please don't rule them as just. accidental overdoses or party girls that did this to themselves. ask why it's in their system, why they were dropped off. ask questions. >> detectives listened to the

family's pleas, and their questions led them to this man. hollywood producer david pierce. police say this is a grainy surveillance image of the women outside the club. prosecutors say hilda and kristy were photographed with him that evening, and ended up at his apartment in the early hours of the morning. >> they tried to leave in an uber, and the uber came and went. and at that point, the two women were were unconscious. >> john says he was able to access his wife's messages and found this text between the two friends, kristy saying at 5:30 a.m, let's go. hilda responding, i'll call an uber. and ten minutes away. the women never made their ride home. >> let's go ahead and go back on the record. >> prosecutors charged david pierce with murder and forcible rape of kristy and hilda. they say the friends met him at the

warehouse party and they went to pierce's apartment. they say he drugged the women with the date rape drug ghb and cocaine laced with fentanyl, which caused them to overdose. his dna was found on both victims. the next day, pierce and his roommate, brant osborn, were seen on security cameras carrying christi's body out of the apartment and told hospital staff that they found the women on the side of the road and were acting as good samaritans. osborn was charged as an accessory to murder after the fact. >> not just a model, a wife wanted to be a mother. she was looking forward to her whole future. she was a granddaughter. she was a niece. she comes from a very line, long line of strong women. >> dusty giles says she'll never forget her conversation with the hospital that her daughter was dead. >> i still didn't believe, but i

hollered for my husband. >> we, the jury in the above entitled action, find the defendant, david bryan pierce, guilty of the crime of first degree murder. >> after a month long trial, a jury returned a guilty verdict on david pierce for murdering kristy and hilda and sexually assaulting the two friends. in addion, he was also found guilty of raping several other women in different incidents. the jury deadlocked on his roommate brant osborn's charges, and his case was declared a mistrial. >> we managed to come together and put a monster away, and he's never going to see the light of day again. the person that he killed was very important to a lot of people. she was a joy to be around. she was always happy. a go getter. she was interested in building a career. she made friends really easily. she was just a beautiful soul. >> outside court, kristy's mother was overcome with emotio,

wearing a pendant on her necklace that carries her daughter's ashes. >> she's always with me when i need strength. i feel like i just can't take that day. and the grief that i can hold her. and i can hold her close to my chest and my heart. and i can talk to her and say, baby girl, i'm so sorry that mama wasn't there. >> pierce faces 148 years to life in state prison, and is scheduled to be sentenced on march 13th. that same day, there will be a hearing to determine if and when a new trial for osborn will occur. up next, a young mom goes missing and her ex-boyfriend finds himself under suspicion. >> and i asked him then would he take a polygraph test? and he agreed. >> slow down.

the sky over troy, alabama. >> she was scared. she was worried about something happening to her. >> and a cloud of suspicion hangs over her ex-boyfriend. >> she told me if anything happened to her, make sure y'all check him. >> lela faulkner was a smart, pretty, outgoing young woman with a bright future. >> she was a straight-a student. she was valedictorian of her class. >> but while away at college in montgomery, alabama, her education was sidetracked after she got pregnant and had a baby girl. >> that's our grandbaby. madison and madison adored lila. >> lila and maddie's dad were never married. in fact, they split before madison was even born. lila packed up and went back to her tiny hometown of troy and moved in with her parents. they were more than happy to help the single mom raise madison. >> they would be in the car. they would be singing, and madison be singing along, and lila would just jump in. they

sung and danced to and even going to the movies, going to different events for the school. her mom was there. >> back in troy, lila met a new guy, blaine gray leyer, whose parents owned the sporting goods store in town. sparks fly, and lila soon moves in with blaine. >> they only dated for about two months before she moved in with him. at first, everything was smooth. >> it seemed like a match made in heaven, but over time, her parents claimed the relationship turned ugly. >> it had gotten real bad fighting every day. she would call crying. we went up there a few times, but there's nothing we could really do other than if she would just wanted to come home with us and she wouldn't. >> two days before the fourth, lila finally calls it quits, with blaine reluctantly moving back home with her mom and dad. then lila shakes the tiny town of troy by making a shocking

claim about blaine on social media. >> she posted that her boyfriend was leaving her for another man. >> just two days after moving back in on the 4th of july. lila's parents take madison to watch the fireworks so lila could go out with friends. it would be the last time they'd see her. her mother looks back at a troubling text she got from lila months earlier. she writes, i'm scared of bj. i need you to come get me. her mom writes back, lila, what's going on with you two? lila responds, if something happens to me, it's him. >> she was scared. she was worried about something happening to her. >> lila's parents claim the day she went missing, their daughter in blaine had been in a terrible text war. and there were allegations about money and drugs. lila's parents admit their daughter was struggling at the time. >> she had an alcohol addiction and she was doing drugs too.

>> at first the faulkners were worried but not panicked. they say lila had disappeared on short trips before, but after three days and still no word, lila's parents panicked. >> because of her history. and she's done this before and we told the family to, you know, check with her friends to try to find out if she'd make sure that she's not out on one of these binges. >> after checking with family and friends, the faulkners come up empty. nobody has seen or heard from lila. soon, the pike county sheriff's department launches an investigation. >> we started looking into it a little bit more deeper. we still have nothing to say that she was abducted. we have no information actually placing her anywhere other than that property at her parents house. we looked at her facebook posts and we saw that that day she was talking back and forth with her ex-boyfriend that she just moved out from,

and they were kind of arguing back and forth basically over money and about drugs. >> blaine gray, leyer is now the center of the investigation. >> when i talked to blaine, he first didn't want to come talk to me. he kept trying to say, we need to talk to the last people she was with. we finally got him. he came in, we talked to him, and i asked him then would he take a polygraph test? and he agreed. >> the results of the polygraph. >> the examiner's answer was he didn't pass it. i also asked him to take a follow up polygraph test and he wouldn't do it. >> but investigators didn't have other evidence to arrest gray leer and never charged him with lila's disappearance, only adding frustration to her heartbroken family. >> all we want is answers. we're so angry because it feels like the sheriff's department is not doing anything. >> i'd like to give this family some closure. we don't know what happened to her.

the habits that she was going, was getting into, and i didn't really know it was that bad. >> and blaine says he's the one haunted by layla's disappearance. >> a bunch of names came into my head and. and i ran them by miss susan, and they checked out 1 or 2. they just don't know who picked her up from the house. >> miss susan is layla's mother. blaine says that he was speaking with her regularly, hoping to help find out what happened to layla, even though he admits he wasn't more active in finding clues. >> i wanted to stay my distance so that people wouldn't think that i'm trying to be too close to it and trying to figure out what's all going on. >> and one of the biggest questions hanging over the case. layla. shocking post on social media claiming they broke up because blaine ran off with another man. >> the only thing i can think is she was upset and she didn't want to be around the house. she

just wanted to go. i don't want to speculate, but i would think that she was probably wanting to go go out and do things she shouldn't be doing. >> and what about those text messages layla sent her mom and dad, warning them about blaine just before she vanished. >> that's crazy. i don't know anything about that. it hurts my heart a lot. that. that's awful. i would never hurt her. ever. >> blaine categorically denied having anything to do with layla's disappearance, and says he doesn't know what happened to her. he knows there's someone out there who does. >> the whole thing comes down to is who picked her up at her parents house. we'll have some answers, but we don't know who that is. >> he admits layla's disappearance still has him feeling tortured. >> sorry we broke up because you wouldn't be in this situation. she wouldn't be in the situation missing right now. and i would tell her i love her and i would
