umbrellas were out, the wipers were on. things really going to ramp up as we head into those overnight hours, right to roberto gonzalez as we go, especially those winds. right, roberta? >> absolutely. with the saturated soil that we already have in the copious amounts of precipitation in the forecast and the winds in excess of 70mph along the coastline and santa cruz mountains, you bet there will be downed trees and the potential of downed power lines and or power outages. this is it. it's a powerful system. we have the leading edge of it now impacting the bay area. you see lots of rain showers around the santa clara valley area. we've already picked up 15/100 of an inch of rain in san jose, and nearly 2/10 in milpitas. in just the past couple of hours, east bay has got some action as well, moving out of the tri-valley towards tracy and also discovery bay and hit and miss moderate rain showers from petaluma to nicasio and novato and back through marin city, san

francisco. a little bit of light rain at this hour, but let's go ahead and track it together. here it goes. 2:00 in the morning. the frontal boundary passes through the bay area, and as it slices through the winds increasing, you head out the door for your morning commute and say, that wasn't so bad. it happened while we slept. but no, there's going to be a lot of ponding and flooding on the roadways. and then look what happens at 11:00. more powerful rain showers, heavy rain. the potential of a thunderstorm exists 3:00 in the afternoon. same drill. heavy downpours into 7:00, and then we begin to buy a break on friday. sure, some hit and miss rain showers on friday morning, but by 5:00 in the evening, it's done. we'll talk about the watches, the warning and everything you know, to get through this storm together. that's still coming up. >> a lot going on. all right. we'll see you soon, roberta. thank you. coastal area is bracing for extremely hazardous conditions as this storm starts to hit. ktvu betty yu reports tonight from pacifica.

>> pacifica is bracing for rough surf, high winds and heavy rain to move in overnight and intensify. thursday. waves could reach a staggering 45ft. >> and they are called flood barriers. >> ace hardware is seeing a surge in demand for emergency supplies as the storm ramps up. it's running low on items like heaters, flashlights, tarps and rain gear. >> tomorrow we should get a rush during the rain. that's the thing. they don't prepare, so we get a lot of last minute. so i'm expecting i'm expecting a lot of customers tomorrow. >> damaging winds could bring down trees and power lines all along the coast. ktvu tire and brake center in pacifica usually sees an uptick in customers whose cars are damaged after losing control in the storm's rough conditions. >> the power is the main thing, but you know, we have a tendency to lose our phones and our internet connections, but as far as trying to get the work done out here, it's the power because most of our equipment runs off

electricity and hydraulic. and so when the power goes out, you know, we're kind of stuck. >> meanwhile, pacifica resident rod riley and his dog ruby went out for their evening walk, anticipating a day mostly indoors. thursday. >> we do a little bit of preparation, just make sure there's no loose items on the deck and make sure all the furniture is covered and the covers are nice and tight so they don't blow away. >> anytime it rains or above average winds, power goes out. so it's probably happened, i think like 2 or 3 times this year already and we're only in february. >> terence chan said he's now considering inv power bank just to kind of keep the fish alive. and now we're having to look into getting solar and a tesla powerwall just to keep the house running. >> and isolated. thunderstorms will also be possible overnight into friday in pacifica. betty yu, ktvu, fox two news. >> and in sonoma county, pga says it is prepared and ready to

torres resigned in november and is now in jail, facing child sexual assault charges. ktvu south bay reporter lamonica peters has more tonight. after attending the candidate forum. >> on wednesday night at downtown san jose's rotary summit center, hundreds of community members gathered to hear from candidates who want to represent district three. the candidates included gabby chavez, lopez, adam duran, matthew quevedo, irene smith and anthony caudillos. phil dolan and tyrone wade did not attend. >> not only has having served as a worker for many years, but now as an employer in our downtown, i have also been delivering services directly to this community through the pandemic all the way to today. >> having been born and raised in san jose's east side, and what makes me unique is that i have just shy of 29 years of public safety with the sheriff's department. >> on housing. folks, we got to admit we're falling behind. we need folks who have bold visions. i'm pushing for us to

build 10,000 new homes in our downtown core. >> the forum was presented by the san jose downtown association in partnership with san jose chamber of commerce. candidates expressed their own ideas about addressing important issues, including blight and vacancies, homelessness, bart construction, and the entertainment economy. >> i made two very strong points. the first being we were more dumping in 93 and the second being that we need large scale shelters. those two points are still critically important today. >> we know that the previous super bowl brought in hundreds of millions of dollars of economic impact. but if you look at the data, the vast majority of that money went up to san francisco. so moving forward, i think i can speak for everyone on this panel that in 2026, we need to make sure that san francisco is not eating our lunch again here. >> the district three candidates will take part in several more forums over the next two months before people can make their decision on april 8th. lamonica peters, ktvu, fox two news.

>> all right, fans starting to stream into the city of san francisco for nba all-star weekend. the finishing touches being placed in and around the chase center. the hotel council of san francisco says this weekend alone is set to generate $350 million to boost the economy. earlier, we did speak with the mayor of san francisco, daniel lurie, who told us he's very excited to show off the city to the entire world. >> this is just the start. we got lunar new year, we got the nba all star game, and then we got super bowl 60. in 12 months, six world cup matches. but we are ready. we are prepared. we've been working for months on on every issue and we are going to have a safe, secure and fun all star weekend. >> and with the all star game in chinese new year parade falling on the same weekend, some people say they will actually try to attend both events. and tonight, the official tipoff to the nba all star weekend, the bay area host committee coming together for the first of three big

events that will happen. as we heard the mayor say in the next 18 months. this includes super bowl 60, the world cup taking place right here next year. ktvu bailey o'carroll reports from chase center. >> on behalf of the bay area host committee, welcome to the 2025 all star game and all star week. >> nba all star weekend has officially tipped off in san francisco years in the making. the bay area host committee, led by ceo jan muhammad, was excited to officially kick off festivities. >> this is our chance to show off the region in a way that people maybe haven't thought of or seen for a little while, and so there's just almost this, like butterflies in my stomach, excitement to kick it, to kick it off. this weekend. >> san francisco mayor daniel lurie, who prior to becoming mayor was the chair of the bay area host committee, couldn't be more excited to tip off a historic 18 months in the bay area. >> i'm so excited that we have the world coming to san francisco this weekend and to the bay. we have so much to show

off. i don't the noise outside. when you get to our city, you see how great it. >> is this weekend. nba all-star weekend tips off. next year, the bay area will host super bowl 60 and just months later be home to the world cup. no other region has hosted all three events back to back to back. >> this weekend is going to be amazing. i mean, this is our kickoff to the three events and the journey that we have to host major sporting events in the bay. >> all three events in total are expected to bring $1.4 billion to the economy and 400,000 new hotel bookings. charles barkley was pretty outspoken about his distaste for the city of san francisco coming into this all star weekend, and at the event, mayor daniel lurie offering to personally take barkley on a tour of the city to show off what so many people who live here love so much about san francisco. but everybody just excited to get these festivities underway here for the 2025 nba

that crashed off the coast of san diego today. this story does begin tonight's west coast rap witness video shows the fighter jet in ea 18. growler going straight down there into the san diego harbor this morning, right near shelter island. the navy said both pilots ejected before that plane hit the water. they were rescued by a fishing boat. the two men were taken to an area hospital where they were in stable condition. a navy spokesperson says the jet crashed during a go around maneuver. the coast guard said a booms around the site to contain the debris field. >> the main channel of san diego bay remains open in and out, but you'll see a large coast guard and navy presence holding the maritime perimeter of the debris field. while all of the debris is recovered. >> two coast guard vessels are safeguarding the wreckage. right there again in san diego harbor. also in southern california, communities in burn scar areas are preparing for heavy rain and possible mudslides. cities in

los angeles county have been working here all week to really stabilize hillsides in the palisades fire zone. a long stretch of the pacific coast highway is also shut down as a precaution. in altadena, where the eaton fire burned, people have been working here for days to surround their properties with sandbags. los angeles county sheriff robert luna says evacuation warnings for some areas affected by the palisades, sunset and hurst fires will take effect tomorrow. tomorrow morning. now to hawaii, where the state's most active volcano erupted once again today, sending lava into the air for several hours. this is kilauea's ninth eruption since december. these eruptions are happening within a closed area of the hawaii volcano national park on the big island. all nearby homes are not in danger. the usgs has raised its volcano alert level from advisory to watch, and you can hear about the west coast. top stories every weekday right here on ktvu. west coast rap with alex savage airs 7:00 monday through friday, or you can find a round the clock

coverage at west coast rap.com. new at 11, wendy williams is opening up about her life under guardianship, saying she's living like a, quote, convicted criminal. the former talk show host is in an assisted living facility in new york due to her struggles with alcohol and a diagnosis of a type of dementia. but tmz's harvey levin tells us in his conversations with her, williams seemed to be back to her old self. >> so the question if she really does have frontotemporal dementia, how does she go from this to this? she's gotten significantly better to where she's the way she was. so was this a misdiagnosis? >> my brothers and sisters. >> levin says williams is planning to go to court to win her freedom from the guardianship. the documentary, called tmz presents saving wendy, is available on the streaming service toby, which is owned by fox. coming up after the break, a large amount of illegal weapons seized from a

numerous firearms. after getting a 911 call about a break in. officers responded to a home on cordell avenue where a man said an armed individual was trying to break in. police determined there was no suspect and that the caller might have been hallucinating. 28 year old jacob lefevre was taken into custody. officers say they located multiple weapons, including stolen and privately manufactured guns and guns, which also had serial numbers

removed. san francisco police say a gun battle between two groups left an innocent bystander injured. and as ktvu is, amber lee reports tonight, a mother nursing her baby narrowly missed being shot. >> a flurry of bullets. it's like. and then got some cover and then probably a few pop shots afterwards. >> neighbors tell me they heard a barrage of gunfire shortly before noon in san francisco's sunnydale neighborhood. the citizen app video shows a pga contractor who was struck in the leg by a stray bullet while he was working in the area. police say his injury is not life threatening. investigators say two groups were involved in a gunfight, but no motive was given. >> it appears at this time that it's a it's an isolated incident and there's no there wasn't any general threat to the public. >> bullets struck a street sign and narrowly missed injuring another bystander. >> a stray bullet hit from right here, and it stopped right here in my gas cap. and my wife was

inside. right here on this side. >> jonathan armstrong says his wife was in their suv to get some privacy while nursing their eight month old son. armstrong was working inside the river of life church, where he is also a congregation member. >> if anything happened where she got hit, i would have been very upset. and so i'm glad, thank god that she didn't get hit and she was able to come inside. >> hobby parlor. >> in mandarin. this neighbor tells me she was scared after hearing multiple gunshots. stepping outside her home and seeing the pga contractor injured. she tells me a previous shooting in the area struck her family's vehicle. >> we'll be praying for the pga worker and all those who are affected mentally or because this is very traumatic, especially my wife. she was she was shaken up when she came inside. >> police say one person was arrested and that they are looking for more suspects. investigators are asking anyone with video or information to contact them. amber lee, ktvu, fox two news.

>> you've been hearing about it for the past couple of days. it is here. we do have a powerful area of low pressure pushing up against the bay area. take a look at our data right now. this is live and we are seeing copious amounts of precipitation in and around the bay area. the heaviest rain has traversed to the east bay now, so let's track it together. by 2:00 in the morning, you're going to start hearing the wind ramp up the raindrops on your rooftops. and the heaviest precipitation from santa rosa wrapping around to fairfield, fremont and into the santa cruz mountain areas, as well as the santa clara valley. now, by 7:00 in the morning, we by a good break. however, the damage is done. the roads are flooded, there's ponding, there's debris. with the wind ramping up, there's the potential of debris flows as well. now here we go. at lunchtime, more heavy rain, pockets of heavy rain showers and even the of an isolated thunderstorm. there you have it, around the peninsula, also in the morgan hill area. by 3:00 in

the afternoon. by 8:00, again hit and miss scattered rain showers. and this continues until about sunup on friday at 7:00. straight up. just a scattered shower here and there by 5:00 in the evening on friday, we've got our skies drying out, but by then up to seven inches of rain in the wettest spots of the santa cruz mountains, most likely six inches and pretty uniform, up to a couple of inches of rain in throughout most areas. this is why we have a flood watch in effect. rapid runoff flood threat along our creeks and streams. in fact, in felton were monitoring the san lorenzo river because boy, this rapidly rises right now at nearly five feet, 14.7 is expected by 8:00 tomorrow morning. so this is a big, beautiful area of low pressure tapping into some tropical moisture with it. the winds will ramp up, especially along the coast side with up to 70 mile per hour wind gusts. in addition to that, surface up up

a all star coverage. several events are slated for the big weekend, many happening in san francisco, but the city of oakland will also be hosting some fun gatherings. as ktvu henry lee reports, the oakland police department has its own plan to keep all the crowds safe. >> so this is an amazing weekend for the bay area, and it also means that the nba has not forgotten about oakland. >> interim oakland mayor kevin jenkins is welcoming the nba all-star weekend with open arms. the celebrity game on friday and the practice and hbcu all-star classic on saturday will all be held at the oakland arena. >> when it comes down to oakland, we have some of the best restaurants in the world here. we have some great culture, we have amazing events coming up, and we have a rabid

fan base of the nba, nfl and mlb. >> so even if the warriors, the raiders and the a's have all left town, this weekend will be oakland's moment to shine. but deputy police chief james behre sounded a warning. >> if you come into our city and you victimize any of our community members or businesses or people that are coming here to enjoy the festivities, we will arrest you. >> at a news conference, oakland police discussed their plans to keep the city safe. i asked if officers would still be tasked with monitoring sideshows. >> we will have specific officers set at specific locations for nba related events, but we will have additional officers out there to help address some of the sideshow activities if they shall occur. >> police chief floyd mitchell says the nba will be on the hook for at least some of the costs associated with policing the city. >> the nba is paying for specific events that they ask us to help them in regards to escorting and providing security for that. >> police will be working with partner agencies to keep the city safe. chp officers will boost traffic enforcement along busy streets like broadway and international boulevard, where police will also be on the

lookout for sex trafficking. alameda county sheriff's deputies will be on duty at the oakland airport. >> as far as staffing and their lower numbers, we have to leverage our other partners. we're not going to do this by ourselves. >> but the bottom line is, although safety is paramount. officials want oakland to bask in the spotlight. >> this is our moment for oakland to shine, to show so many people from outside of oakland to come and find out what makes the town so unique and fun. >> the city of oakland will be staffing its emergency operations center this weekend, and one oakland officer will be sent across the bay to the eoc in san francisco. in oakland, henry lee ktvu, fox two news. >> hall of fame. bay area basketball legend rick barry being honored ahead of nba all-star weekend for his support of law enforcement. the former golden state warriors forward receiving honorary deputy status from san francisco sheriff paul miyamoto at a fundraising gala at the italian athletic club tonight. the event, raising money for the county's junior deputy program, does offer year round mentorship for young people between 9 and 18 years

old. >> it's nice to have an opportunity to be honored by the people who are here to protect everyone. i have great respect and admiration for our first responders, for the police, for the fire department, the people who work in hospitals, our military. without them, this country wouldn't be what it is today. >> rick barry, who retired in 1980, ranks among the most prolific scorers in basketball history. he is the only player to lead the ncaa, aba and nba in points per game in a season. a northern california man is not letting his age pin him down after he recently bowled his very first perfect game at the age of 87. [music] [applause] russ triano started bowling 50 years ago because of his children, and he fell in love with the sport. now he bowls at java lanes in corning, just south of red bluff, every tuesday in the senior league and every wednesday with a more competitive league, which he says is more up to his speed.
