>> included in this closure. the santa cruz wharf. it was just december when a portion of the structure collapsed into the ocean. >> it's a good precaution because the last time people could have died. >> still, those visiting santa cruz today needed to make alternate plans. some chose to watch the waves instead of visiting the beaches or wharf. >> i don't think that's a disappointment. this part's always been one of the nicest aspects of this area. >> these waves put on a show, but thankfully appeared to cause no new damage. >> i could see for an out of towner, though. being a little disappointed on the wharf, because if you've got a couple of kids and you want somewhere to eat, i could kind of see that. but we're more surf people anyway, so we want to come see, like these crazy breaks, right? >> today's waves were more like 15ft, much less than what was predicted. the high surf warning still goes until 3 a.m, and officials say you should still be aware of sneaker waves. the wharf and the beaches are expected to reopen tomorrow

into motion if needed. >> prices go up and uber lyft. i would stay away from taxes if i was anybody, you know what i mean? but other than that, i think your feet are probably your best option, honestly. >> one other mode of transportation that's really important that we didn't get a chance to mention are the ferries. they are also going to be running. so that's a good way to get off of the roads and still get to where you need to be. reporting live from the studio. jana katsuyama, ktvu, fox two news. >> all sorts of options, but i like what he said. just use your feet. >> that's right. best way to get around jana. >> thank you. all those nba all star events are happening throughout this weekend, and it all leads up to the big all star game on sunday night. >> and that includes the junior nba and wnba basketball clinics. ktvu joe fonzi has more now on this unique opportunity for young people. >> they lined up early and once they entered the building, they were treated like the nba stars they came to see. >> all right. up next here on the four this afternoon protests at stonewall national monument in new york. >> people rallying in greenwich village after the national park service removed references to transgender people from the monuments website. we're going to talk live with one of the ers o

erase us. they will not. >> demonstrators gathered today at the stonewall inn in greenwich village in new york to denounce the removal of references to transgender and queer people from the website of the stonewall national monument. even the letters t and q were removed from lgbtq. the stonewall inn was named a national monument back in 2016. it was the site of a historic protest when patrons fought back against police raids at the gay bar in 1969. these changes
4:16 pm
follow president trump's executive order to have the federal government define gender as male or female only. >> it's not only about removing letters from our website, it's a coordinated attack to remove or try to erase trans, queer and non-binary people. >> links to other lgbtq history sites have also been removed from the park services website. >> for more, we are joined this afternoon by suzanne ford, the executive director of san francisco pride. thank you so much for being here. how do you feel about this change? >> just a sense of hurt. woke up this morning. every morning we think something else can't happen, but it does. i think this move really shows exactly what they are attempting to do, to erase trans people and to separate us from the rest of our community. the lesbian and gay part of our community. so i see what they're doing. i don't think it's going to work, but
4:17 pm
it's very painful. >> what do you feel are the what do you feel is the motivation behind this effort, as you said, to really sort of single out trans people? >> well, i think they found that it resonated with their base. i think the, the headlines against trans people, they've been building that up over the last 4 or 6 years. and i think when they got into the election cycle this time, they realized it was a small minority that they could pick on for a lot of political gain. and then i think that dividing us, they are trying to normalize the other parts of our community while separating us out. unfortunately, we don't have the resources that many other groups in our community have. >> we do have a response from the national parks conservation association, that is a group that advocates for the national park service and pushed for the stonewall monument. so? so this is what the program manager said, quote, erasing letters or webpages does not change the history or the contributions of our transgender community members at stonewall or anywhere
4:18 pm
else. timothy leonard went on to say, quote, stonewall inspires and our parks must continue to include diverse stories that welcome and represent the people that shaped our nation. so what are the consequences of these stories not being included? >> well, it changes the history. we know here in san francisco that our own compton's cafeteria riot predated stonewall, and that was trans people, trans people of color, revolting against treatment by police. so it's an attempt to change history, and it's a solid fact that trans people were involved and standing up to brutality and discrimination against lgbtq people from the beginning. and so that's what they're trying to erase. i think one thing that they're not considering is in the last 10 to 15 years, a trans people have been in leadership positions, have worked in communities with other lgbt leaders. so that work and those relationships, i think, will prevent what they're trying to achieve.
4:19 pm
>> obviously, suzanne, this is part of a broader effort, as you sort of alluded to earlier, beyond the what's happened with the stonewall monument website, we have the trump administration taking other actions targeting transgender people, including in order to restrict gender affirming medical care for trans youth, forcing transgender women in federal prisons to be housed with men. and we also just this afternoon learned that the u.s. army has moved to ban transgender people from enlisting in the service altogether. so for you and for your organization on the local level, what is your approach now to sort of push back against this concerted effort to target the trans community? >> well, we have to do two things. at trans. we have to center trans people, and we have to talk about what is what we are facing. and then, you know, at the last of june, people are asking me, you know, what can san francisco pride do? we're going to do two things. we're first of all, we're going to provide a safe place for our community to come together. but then at the beginning of the
4:20 pm
parade, it's going to be the resistance contingent from the board. and we're going to make the statement that it here in san francisco, trans people are not only going to be seen, we're going to be centered, and we are going to be part of the fabric of san francisco, and we're not going anywhere. >> and how can allies of the trans community help in that effort? >> that's a great, great question. i get asked that all the time. the first thing is i always ask people, do you have a trans person at your dinner table? it's easy to say you're an ally and that you support trans people, but do you really have a trans person in your life? and if you don't change that, and then secondly, give to organizations that are fighting for us. lambda legal nclr the transgender law center. and then, if you'd like, please go on our website sfp.org. we're going to need everyone to support us this year. so we would appreciate any donations. but thank you for having trans people on. and please keep please keep covering this story. >> well, we appreciate you coming on and talking about this

as you can see, she's only 45 pounds, which is a really fun size. i've never had a dog this size before, and yeah, she's just a really fun and loving, really cuddly dog. >> how has she sort of fit into your home and what what kind of forever home would you envision her winding up in? >> yeah, so she came to our home as kind of an anxious dog, but it's been really great to see her blossom and become, like, a lot more confident and, you know, very calm. as you can see, it's a little surprising how calm she is. yeah. studio. and yeah, just build her confidence as we've had her. we think the ideal home for her would be a calm, adult household where she can continue to grow and continue her training. she's really easy to train. she's crate and house trained. she really likes treats, as you can see. she also really likes. >> gave her a few before we came on. yeah. >> yeah, she. >> she needs some more. i mean she's you know. >> yeah. always hungry and she's really people oriented. so that
4:41 pm
makes her really fun and easy to train. yeah. so we'd love to see her go to a great home. >> yeah, it really is. i'm surprised at how mild mannered she is. i mean, she seems perfectly comfortable here in the ktvu studios. jessica, you are, you know, obviously fostering. agatha, talk with us a little bit about the importance of the foster pet program and what that actually entails. >> yeah, absolutely. so we've been a foster with this is our first foster, actually. so we've had her for quite a while and it's been really fun fostering this particular dog. and i had fostered before. and the oakland animal services team is really fantastic, very supportive. they'll provide everything for foster volunteers from, you know, the supplies, a crate, a bed, bowls or food and medical care that the dogs need. and they'll also have a really fantastic volunteer network to provide any advice or support as you need it. and fostering is
4:42 pm
really important because it takes dogs out of the shelter where they might be stressed and puts them in a home where they can relax and get ready for adoption, much. like agatha is ready for her forever home. >> yeah, it really is that opportunity to prime them for real life, which is a home and a family, right? >> yeah. and it helps them relax and settle down too, so they can really start to show their true personality. >> yeah. >> obviously if folks become foster volunteers, you get to help these animals who are desperately in need of these foster homes, and you hopefully get them on the path to a forever home. but i'm curious for you to volunteer. what do you get out of this relationship? >> yeah, i think it i think overall fostering is really valuable because it saves lives. you know, the oakland animal shelter in particular is really full right now. they're overcapacity, especially with dogs. and, you know, just put in a plug. they are looking for volunteers to take the larger dogs like agatha size or larger as well as puppies. it seems like they've had a steady stream of puppies coming in in the last, last few weeks. but yeah, it's been really rewarding to
4:43 pm
help this dog. i really enjoy training her. she's been super cuddly, so it's just been really fun to be her temporary foster home. >> jessica though, do you find that you're that you're getting attached? >> i'll be honest. it's really hard right now not to foster fail, especially with this one. >> yeah. okay. yeah. i was wondering how common it is, actually, for someone who's fostering a dog to eventually adopt them. >> yeah, i don't, you know, honestly, i don't know the statistics, but my previous dog, we did foster fail. so i ended up keeping my previous dog. >> yeah, i could see how that could happen. >> all right. but you would recommend people take part in the program? it's probably a very easy to do. they just have to reach out to oakland animal services. >> yeah. that's right. >> okay. well we appreciate you coming in here. we want to i think we want to let people know that there is an adoption hours drop and adoption hours happening this weekend. it looks like. well, no, these are the general drop in adoption hours. so you can look at all the animals who are up for adoption here on thursdays, fridays, saturdays and sundays and reach out to oakland animal services
4:44 pm
if people want to be foster volunteers. >> yeah. and then can i. full disclosure in all honesty, and alex knows this. i'm not really a dog person, but this one is so. she's so sweet. >> she's very sweet. >> yeah. >> very sweet. she deserves some more treats here. after. after we get done. >> i know her little. >> i'm sure she will. >> at home. you need to bring agatha home with you. thank you really a lot, jessica, for what you do and for introducing us to sweet agatha. >> appreciate having us. >> appreciate it. and for what you do as a volunteer. yeah. thanks. >> stay with us, folks. we'll be right back. >> when i was playing, kristen and i started visiting kids that are battling cancer. and we've been inspired by the people at ucsf benioff children's hospitals. they're just working day and night to come up with different types of therapies that are better and more effective all the time. you know, athletes a lot of times get championed as heroes, but there's not much greater hero than saving a kid's life.
