this slam. on the other end. check it out. nevada won 7358. and that does it for sports on this friday night. the 11:00 news with greg starts now. >> the 11:00 news on ktvu. fox two starts now. >> hello again i'm greg lee. a busy weekend in the bay area is now underway. let's give you a live look tonight at the bay bridge. nba all-star weekend tipped off with events in oakland and san francisco today. and there's a full slate ahead as we head into saturday. hoop fans converging with san francisco's chinese new year parade. hundreds of thousands of people expected to flood in the city for tomorrow's annual parade. and tonight, some of basketball and hollywood's biggest stars hitting san francisco streets. nba all star weekend back in the bay area for the first time in 25 years, both high profile events on top of valentine's day have san francisco streets buzzing. ktvu

amberleigh reports tonight from the city. >> in the heart of union square. the grand opening of shoe palace and its new partnership with warriors star stephen curry. drew excited fans trying to get a glimpse of him. the store hosted a private event friday night. we were invited to cover it. >> how are you? i'm feeling fantastic. what's happening? y'all good? >> inside, curry met with schoolchildren, many from assen elementary in oakland. some students had a chance to speak with him. >> i met you when i was four. >> this 13 year old got curry's autograph. >> i felt like my heart jumped out of my chest. yeah. and then he put his arm around me. so i was like, oh my god. seeing him this close was like a dream come true. >> what do you say to all the kids that look up to you? >> keep working hard. believe and dream big. that's it. [applause] >> nearby miss chinatown usa contestants were rehearsing for the friday night competition held at the westin saint francis hotel. 500 guests were expected to attend. the winner will be featured in the chinese new year

parade that takes place saturday evening. >> she is poised and she is determined to always carry forward her chinese culture. >> at morton's steakhouse, the general manager tells me the restaurant is booked through sunday. the combination of valentine's day, the nba all star weekend, the parade and the president's day holiday is great for business. >> the energy in the city. the more people we can get in the city, the better. everyone feels great. they're cleaning up the city, which is really a big plus. >> this couple from walnut creek tells me they got a last minute reservation thanks to a cancellation. they're celebrating their first valentine's day as husband and wife. >> it means a lot to us coming out here to the city of san francisco. it's just it's one of those moments that we really love to spend time together. >> they plan to return to the city on saturday for the all star festivities. >> the traffic and then the crowd and lots of stuff were going on in here that we heard of, especially today. it didn't

scare us at all. we were actually looking forward to it. >> judging by the courier event. there's no beating star power when it comes to attracting crowds. we'll have to wait and see what this weekend will bring with the parade, along with concerts and games in san francisco. amber lee, ktvu, fox two news. >> right now, big names are falling into a party at the exploratorium put on by kenny smith, tio shaq and plenty of other celebrities are expected to be there. two short is due to perform at the party tonight. earlier, we spoke with music producer ghazi shami, who is also promoting the party, as well as sports analyst jalen rose, about their reflections on the bay area hosting the all stars for the first time in 25 years. >> i went to all star when it was in oakland, like 25 years ago, and i watched vince carter win the dunk competition. so to fast forward 25 years later and to be throwing a party with kenny smith is very surreal and special. >> it feels different because the rules are going to be

sunday's game as well. in san francisco. betty yu, ktvu, fox two news. >> and our coverage of nba all star weekend continues online and on the fox local app. it's a free download for your smart tv and phone. new at 11 oakland police have stepped up enforcement leading up to the nba all star weekend, and their efforts are paying off. police say officers have taken two guns off the streets after arresting two armed robbery suspects and another pair in connection to a homicide last month. police say officers have also made several arrests for prostitution related crimes. alameda police are looking for a man who has not been seen in nearly a week. they say robert morales was last seen on sunday near the south shore shopping center at about two in the afternoon. he might have been on his way to a super bowl party and is known to visit chicano park frequently, according to police. morales is five foot eight inches tall, around 175 pounds, and has brown hair and brown eyes. authorities say he is considered at risk due

to his age related cognitive decline. if you spot him or know anything about where he might be, you're asked to call alameda police. in san francisco, police are looking for a woman considered to be at risk. officers say 81 year old arlene johnson was last seen wednesday at about noon. detectives say she regularly rides muni and frequents the pacific heights neighborhood. johnson stands at five feet seven inches tall, has gray hair and brown eyes, and suffers from dementia. you're asked to call sfpd if you have any information on her whereabouts. still to come a warning along the coast. the message for beachgoers as we head into the holiday weekend. and in southern california, heavy rain causing widespread damage in burn scar areas acr s l.a. cou

[ambient noise] southern california tonight as the region struggles to recover from wildfires. the story begins tonight's west coast rap in the burn area of the palisades. fire runoff swept a fire department vehicle into the ocean with one person inside. thankfully, the fire official who was in that suv was able to get out safely. and in the eaton fire burn scar area, mudslides left some cars trapped in neighborhoods covered in debris. the people who live there say they are exhausted from facing a series of back to back threats. >> you know, very quickly, but it was very loud and you could even hear the ground or feel the

ground shaking and stuff. so you go fire into flooding, you know, it's just a lot. >> while the storm has subsided, first responders say the threat of more mudslides will continue and residents should remain cautious. now to nevada, where lawmakers are taking action to battle rising egg costs. governor joe lombardo signed a bill into law today to target the rising price of eggs. under ab 171, the agriculture director now has the authority to bypass a prior law for a 120 day period that required all eggs sold in the state to be cage free. the governor also released a statement saying he hopes the legislature can repeal the cage free requirement law to lower the cost of eggs long term. it looks like a movie famously shot on oregon's coast more than 40 years ago will get a sequel. according to variety, steven spielberg is producing a sequel to goonies. the screenplay is being written by chris columbus, who wrote the original goonies script. the 1985 fiction

adventure told the story of a group of kids who discover an old map and follow it in hopes of finding treasure that will save their astoria, oregon, homes from foreclosure. the sequel does not have an official name, yet in the plot has not been revealed. it is unclear whether stars from the original will be involved. they include sean astin, kiki kwan, josh brolin, and corey feldman. and you can hear about the west coast top stories every weekday right here on ktvu. west coast rap with alex savage airs at 7:00 monday through friday, or fight around the clock coverage at west coast rap.com. in korea, the lunar new year is a national holiday. it's a time for families to gather, celebrate and honor their elders. here's a look now at some of the important traditions marking this time of year for koreans and korean americans. >> we're going to sit down first. >> like many traditions in korean culture, the lunar new year is rooted in respect and adoration for our elders. >> we have two largest, like the

holiday in korea. so one is solar and the other one is like chuseok. >> seollal commemorates the first day of the korean lunar calendar. this year, on january 29th, the staff at the korean center in san francisco welcomed all members of the community to learn about the traditions. >> so happy is like we. we are showing our like respect to the elders. that's why it's very important. and then when we are happy, we're not just doing like only our parents, we're going to do like the old elders, like old relatives. >> sabah is a ritual observed on seollal when koreans bow to their elders and wish them good fortune in the new year. elders often respond with a blessing or message of wisdom. and for children, offer them money. >> when the new year. today, everything has to be like new. so parents usually make or buy some nice clothes. everything is like new clothes. they prepare

and then the first day of the year, we have to wear that new clothes. >> koreans often use the holiday to visit family members. we play traditional games like shogi or using paper toys to try to flip your opponents. think american pogs. also the folk game yutnori, where players throw wooden sticks to move their tokens on a board. oh, and let's not forget about the food. the main dish eaten during korean new year celebrations is daca or a rice cake soup. the rice cakes are cut from long ropes of the dough. a symbolic message in itself. >> it looks very long. so that means, like we wish, long lives. that's why. >> in so many korean families, like my own and at the korean center, preserving these traditions is not only about enjoying the holiday, but ensuring the customs that shape us continue for generations to come. >> language and culture. everything we just. they are like, stick together. so we want

the regional response to a high surf warning along the coast, with predicted waves up to 45ft. high winds and the potential for damage to infrastructure. local officials say something needed to be done. state beaches the county and city of santa cruz all work together on this response plan. they say this is simply the new normal. after a portion of the pier collapsed back in december because of high surf. >> trying to catch up with defunct infrastructure from prior storms a year ago. to ensuring asset protection for the future. the best approach is this large regional closure. >> the high surf warning goes until 3 a.m, and officials say you should still be on the lookout for sneaker waves. the wharf and beaches are expected to reopen early tomorrow morning. now to east san jose, where the weekend is getting off to a trying start for some residents. as ktvu south bay reporter jesse gary reports, a nearby creek flooded more than a dozen apartment units.

>> on this valentine's day at the betty ann garden apartments. it's power washers and mud, not flowers and chocolates. abatement crews worked most of the day trying to clean up this mess from mother nature. >> when you look at it on tv and see it affect others until it hits your house, you will never understand. >> lisa rhines sifting through what can be salvaged inside her ground floor, one bedroom apartment. hers is one of 16 units that sustained damage when a daylong downpour thursday pushed the nearby upper penitencia creek over its banks and into some homes. >> we had d.o.t. crews that were actually in the area driving, and they spotted it at 830 in the morning. they quickly shut down king road from mayberry to berryessa avenue. >> a quick response and efforts by neighbors to push back the rising tide failed. more than a dozen units flooded. >> we lost important papers.

like everything that we had. we had clothes, shoes. everything got lost. >> clothes, shoes, computer, furniture. bed. my reclining chair. i mean, all my other personal stuff. >> affected residents say the apartment's management company is paying for cleaning services and hotel rooms for a week. the upper penitencia creek is prone to flooding during unusually heavy periods of rain. city officials say the floods caused is still being investigated and that this natural disaster will be discussed during an annual preparedness meeting to better prepare for next rainy season. >> we look at all our hot spots. we go through all the maintenance and preparation that we've done. we talk about any concerns. this is definitely going to factor into that meeting next year. >> for the residents of the 16 affected units, this year is the priority. many don't have renter's insurance and will be left to fend for themselves. >> the community we pull together, we help each other, support each other, but we need our city to pull together with

us too. >> the creek is still swollen from the heavy rains. the flooding took place in district four, which is david colon's district. his office says over the next 24 hours, he's going to meet with the city's office of emergency management. then he'll meet with the management company of the apartment complex to see if they can make the victims whole, or if the city will have to get involved in the creeklands section of san jose. jesse gary, ktvu, fox two news. >> crowds of skiers in tahoe eagerly lined up today to spend valentine's day on the slopes. this week's storm brought around 31in of snow to palisades tahoe since wednesday. although the resort anticipates big crowds for the president's day long weekend. two small avalanches, low visibility and high winds kept mountain operations limited today, but that did not seem to bring down anyone's spirits. all right, let's come back with meteorologist mark. mark, mark, we had a lot of rain, but things are clearing out for a busy weekend in the city. >> we are clearing out. you know, i was driving to work today. i saw this sign for interstate 80 to go toward the

sierra. i wonder if i just kind of veered off and not. >> just see you guys later. >> yeah, exactly. it's tempting. it's. the snow looks great up in the mountains. and for us here in the bay area, the storm clouds have moved on out of town. take a look at those rainfall totals. boulder creek over six inches of rainfall. walnut creek over three inches and out toward san francisco and oakland over two inches. so that was a big time storm over the past couple of days. and at least for us for this weekend, no major storms, lots of frost tomorrow morning, lots of clouds all weekend long, and there's a chance of a shower sunday morning as a system moves across the bay area for saturday for the chinese new year parade in san francisco, it will be dry, but just lots of clouds and temperatures will be in the in the low to mid 50s. here's a look at the satellite right now. no major storms to talk about for us here in northern california. as we come in closer, we just have some patchy fog trying to regroup around some of the inland valleys for tonight. so the fog will be a factor first thing tomorrow morning and the chill will be as well. santa rosa right now 42, oakland is 45 and san jose 46 degrees. here is our live camera

looking above san francisco with partly cloudy skies. and the clouds will thicken up overnight tonight and the temperatures will drop off quite a bit. so a frost advisory for the north bay valleys and also the santa clara county hills first thing tomorrow morning. coolest locations starting out the day in the low to mid 30s. so get ready for that chill first thing tomorrow morning. here's a setup though. there is a system out here in the pacific and a lot of clouds. you can see right in this area here. so we will bring in some clouds all weekend long saturday, sunday and into monday. and there could be enough energy left over with this guy that we could have a few showers as well. so here is the forecast model. the clouds increasing throughout the day on your saturday and then saturday night into early sunday morning you see some action approaching sonoma county. and then this system kind of falls apart, but maybe some scattered showers first thing sunday morning and then into the afternoon hours. there's still a slight chance of a shower, but we really scale back on the potential through sunday afternoon. and still a lot of clouds for monday. highs for tomorrow will be in the 50s

to the lower 60s once again. the clouds will be a factor all weekend long. saturday, sunday we bring in that shower chance, especially for the morning hours and then into monday as well. we'll hold on to at least partly to mostly cloudy skies. maybe another slight chance of a shower into wednesday of next week, but thankfully no major storms in this five day forecast. >> we'll take it. mark thank you. new at 11 highway patrol officers rescued a seal pup from highway 101 in san francisco. it happened just before ten last night at the candlestick park offramp. a driver called 911, saying that a seal pup was wandering in the roadway on the off ramp. the chp says officers were able to guide the seal safely back toward the shoulder and eventually back to the bay. our coverage of nba all-star weekend continues next. today's show of support for the

weekends big all star events. they're also making sure the next generation of ballers have a place to fall in love with the game. ktvu christien kafton has our story. inside san francisco's bret harte elementary school, students were running drills, dribbling, and shooting, all to break in their newly renovated basketball courts. >> i really like it because me and my friends can finally dunk. there's padding on the walls and it's really spacious and i like it. and they added a scoreboard. >> the gym makeover is courtesy of the nba, part of their all star day of service. more than 400 volunteers have come together to work on bret hart and east oakland pride elementary schools, updating play areas to create cleaner, brighter and safer places for the kids to play. student athletes here say the new lower rims will allow them to take their games to the next level. >> the new hoops, they're really better for my height because i can't do really high hoops.

>> barbara bush is vice president for social responsibility for the nba. >> and it's important to us that we can engage in the community, make sure we're giving back to those that are welcoming us and leave the community better than when we arrived. >> she said the payoff is getting to watch these kids enjoy their new court. >> i overheard some young students they didn't know i was at the nba, bragging to their friends about how cool the new gym was, and of course, that brought tears to my eyes. [applause] and this is why it's so fun to do this work. >> bret hart's principal said the old gym was in need of a facelift. >> this partnership with the warriors and the nba and heart of america, they're just wonderful. we're having a terrific time. the gym looks great. it's a legacy that's been left to us here, and we're going to use this forever and ever. >> the kids say they're ready to play. >> i'm ready to come in here on wednesdays and with my class and have fun. do gym class. i think it's going to be real fun. >> in addition to the new gym, the nba is putting together 700

backpacks filled with school supplies for the kids and for every assist in the all star game, state farm will be donating $1,900 to the boys and girls clubs in oakland and san francisco. in san francisco, christian captain ktvu, fox two news. >> on this valentine's day, hundreds of people decided to celebrate by going to san francisco city hall to get married. the happy couples tied the knot in the rotunda. san francisco mayor daniel lurie was the surprise guest officiant for two of the city hall weddings. and get married in city hall by the mayor. just like sort of solidifies our connection and love for this city. that's love. yeah. so it's great. >> congratulations to all the couples. on a typical friday, city officials marry about 25 couples in the rotunda. but on this valentine's day, 250 couples tied the knot. and today, at the cal academy in san francisco, valentines were handed out and promptly torn to pieces in a beloved annual event. biologists hand out red
