planned here in the bay area and around the country, protesting the policies of president trump. now, today in oakland, one protest begins at 11 a.m. at fruitvale plaza. it will be followed by a march to lake merritt. another protest in san francisco begins at noon along van ness and also at noon in san jose. another protest is planned, accusing the trump administration of having an anti-democratic agenda and also taking illegal actions like the immigration crackdown at the southern border. >> president trump's plan to deport thousands of undocumented immigrants across the country. we'll talk about that in just a moment. first, let's talk about black history month. we have some great stories that we've been following for you. >> you know, it's something in oakland you may not know about. situated below interstate 880, in west oakland is a recording studio in an area that is steeped in black history. and
7:47 am
inside is an organization called the kingmakers of oakland, led by my friend chris chapman. recently produced a profanity free hip-hop album created by and in celebration of black youth. >> you can play it for the young kids. yeah, the group says. black youth in oakland are often portrayed through a negative lens with this album called black love. they offer an inspiring message of joy, beauty and community resilience. ktvu web producer andre torres and photographer jake lockhart got a look inside. [music] place means everything. mic check. one, two. make sure they're hearing me. my name is alonzo henderson. rocking king makers. these are the makings of a king. yeah. we play the game to win. i'm gonna take one for the team. nah, i mean, i am a program facilitator and a&r and artist for king makers music. we come here, we work with youth.
7:48 am
this is a kind of an incubator for youth to come and just grow in, in different ways, in accessing different levels of education, different levels of artistry and express their creativity. can we go hold our students down and lift our teachers up? so go in and play this in the hood so we can reach the thugs and let my brothers and my sisters know it's more to life because their weapon cannot prosper. if yourorm is right. >> west oakland historically was referred to as the harlem of the west. [music] >> what's up with the beats? >> and so, in keeping to that tradition, this is a creative space that really centers black boys while serving all and really supports young men to find their their voice and music, film, animation, video, tv, podcasting and fashion. >> i grew up listening to neo soul, listening to erykah badu. >> carl tyron. [music] >> folks like mos def, folks
7:49 am
like nas, tupac. [music] i like a lot of classic hip hop. i still like to listen to a lot of jazz, a lot of miles davis. yeah, in my house. so i think those type of things, those type of genres, really influence those kind of vibes. i get to work on films, i get to do music here. i get to record music, write music, produce music. >> i can feel it in my blood and my bones and in my genes. i know that time is coming, my desire to be free. my name is khalil chapman. i'm the director of the fellowship initiative, which is our college access program here with i walk with all love because spirit is guiding me. allow me to be thankful for what is inside of me. it was a blessing to, like, work together in this capacity with alonzo. we're like work side by side with the fellowship initiative. so to step in the studio and kind of bring the same energy, a lot of what we try to do is take it back with some history, bring
7:50 am
some facts and some information in so that young people can really be inoculated and surrounded by positive imagery, positive messaging. but some of it is just like the relaxed feeling of some neo-soul vibes. some of it feels like driving by the lake on a sunday. [music] because that experience that we had as young folks in oakland felt love. we knew that to be love. and so yeah, the album will kind of bring you to different, different spots. >> i put that pen to that paper and set my spirit free. >> it is profanity free, but the realest thing is that it's life affirming. and for me, that's more about like writing about what i believe. like writing about what i live, where i'm from, whose i am the people that i represent, like that experience in my life isn't negative and doesn't actually represent anything that i would need to use profanity for. >> give me so healing to love.
7:51 am
>> yeah, the music influences that that list is really, really long. even when we think about just hearing the bay with like tony, tony, tony. >> gucci baby, let me hear you say, oh. [music] >> and too short and the jacka and all of these like, brilliant folks who, who kind of created a sound, a soundtrack to where we're from. >> and my skin and i. [music] know it comes from within. >> and so the album black love is really a reclamation of our beauty, brilliance and innate greatness. and that that we love each other. we come from a culture that is vibrant, that is beautiful, that is influenced folks, not not only just within oakland, the bay through the united states, but globally. >> and in writing this, this album, we wanted it to be for everybody, for everybody's ears, for everybody to listen to. even though it's called black love, everybody can contribute to black love, and everybody can benefit from black love. and

mid 40s though in marin county, 30 up in reno, 25 in truckee and 32 down to 34 south lake tahoe. a lot of high clouds spilling over tomorrow, probably about the same. and then a weak system will drag across us on wednesday. this looks to be about san francisco, marin county, san pablo bay north, i think, you know, 13 100. so quarter of an inch would probably cover it. and that would be up in the lake county and also mendocino county, but probably russian river as well. west healdsburg in there. that'd be on wednesday. today, though, it sure is monday. a lot of a lot of high clouds just kind of spilling in here. and 5060 on the temps after wednesday's system, though. if you can hang in there at least friday, saturday look pretty good. a lot of cloud cover could be dancing in here though around sunday, but temperatures will be above average. >> all right steve, thank you. time now. 753 the celebrations in chinatown get even sweeter. we'll get an inside look at the candy treats for ringing in the lunar new year. and then coming up at 8:00, we'll take you to santa cruz. you're going to meet
