setting it on fire. the clues in this video, recorded before flames erupted from the bar. a hotel and other businesses. >> this is a nightmare. like a horror movie. >> plus, a valentine's day date with death. >> oh. >> a woman violently murdered on the most romantic day of the year. her final words recorded on a chilling 911 call. >> i'm bleeding to death. >> she went to police 33 times in six weeks. stalking. harassing phone calls. threatening emails. >> i spoke with the sergeant that said, oh, nothing's going to happen to your daughter. >> then he snapped. >> i said, how could you allow this to happen, lord? >> thanks for joining us. we begin with a high profile case involving a missouri woman who was on vacation and is now accused of setting a dangerous fire in puerto rico that took out four businesses, including a packed hotel.

>> i knock at pena. >> in the overnight hours on cabo rojo, puerto rico. a popular tourist getaway is engulfed in flames. the fire, raging through several beachside businesses, including a restaurant, bar and hotel. >> oh my god. >> oh my god. >> when i got that call. >> a neighbor reached out to angel marrero, the owner of lucci's seaside hotel, saying that his hotel and other businesses he rents out were burning. >> the first thing that went through my mind. oh my god, my what? my guess, my guess. okay. >> thanks to fast acting neighbors, everyone was evacuated to safety. >> i was in shock. i was in shock. i was in shock. and. and at that time. i mean, you think. what was the reason? >> local residents point to this scene several hours cap arguing with officers after employees of the bar attached to the hotel called police.

>> what are they all the way? >> staff say she was intoxicated and was cut off when she started harassing other customers. >> she was out of control, yelling. even guests in the second floor heard her yelling. they escorted her to the rental. short term rental across the street. >> police say the woman is danielle bertozzi. she was visiting the island from a saint louis suburb. a short time later, danielle, seen here in a pink top, returns to the bar and continues arguing with the staff. >> you came here again looking for trouble because he was talking again. everybody could hear him from my house. >> danielle once again is asked to leave and return to her rental home. as the bar closed for the evening. she came back n all the businesses were closed. she planned everything. >> these are surveillance photos taken of danielle leaving the

rental at 12:25 a.m. there was an island wide blackout, and here she is captured carrying red gas cans used to fuel a generator that were given to her by the rental units owner. then a few minutes later, this picture shows someone who police say looks like danielle in front of the bar when the fire is started. >> i want her to answer me. why why? the puerto rico people are good people. we don't have no one. we open our arms to all the tourists. >> and this is what's left of the bar and part of the hotel. nl, taking video of his property, stunned at the damage caused to the business he worked so hard to own. >> this is a nightmare. i cannot believe it. i mean, it was like i say, like a horror movie. >> as angel is sorting through the rubble of his business, danielle was allegedly planning

her next getaway off the island. she hired a driver to pick her up and take her to the airport nearly three hours away. she cut her stay at the rental home short by nearly a here in a shos that matched the one she is wearing the night before while carrying the gas cans. but before anyone can survey the damage caused by the fire, danielle flew home. >> we have plenty of time to identify her. >> leaving people here angry that police didn't stop her before she left. he says police knew where she was because of the incident at theght. he sayse believe it highlights a bigger problem on the island how tourists are treated differently than locals. and nearly a week after danielle cut her vacation short. >> so this is danielle tatís house. hi scene outside of saint louis, missouri. danielle's neighbor, kelly

rofkar, saw atf agents executing a search warrant across the street. you can see danielle outside. >> we saw atf pull up. >> after some quick internet searches on danielle. her neighbor saw people in puerto rico who were posting video of the fire, and it went viral. >> when i saw the videos, i knew it was her, and it was very shocking. >> kelly says people were dismayed that danielle had yet to be arrested and read comments suggesting that if it was a local who had been accused of arson, they would have been arrested immediately. >> this is clearly something that has impacted a lot of people, and they are waiting for answers. and so that in that moment, i decided to hit record. >> atf agents found her unpacked luggage tags from puerto rico still on her suitcase, and clothing matching what she wore the night of the fire. kelly shared her video with those

ahead of the class. so they end up moving tsses ahead. >> tiana would later graduate from the university of hartford with a bachelor's degree in political science. she was getting her master's when she met james carter on a dating site. >> i only saw photos of you may want to call it mother's intuition. >> then, just>- sixonths into their relationship, carter is sentenced to five months in jail for the abuse of a previous girlfriend, and tiana learns that he had a rap sheet for numerous other violent crimes. but even when carter is released after serving time, they remain a couple. >> he's well-to-do and he's got his own house and stuff like that, so he presented that well. >> but soon there are suspicions of carter cheating on tiana, and the situation sours. >> i said, well, what happened? she said, well, he just bugged me. he won't leave me alone. >> tiana is forced to file a

restraining order against carter. he's so furious, he takes out a restraining order against her. >> he was claiming assaulted him, and she kicked his headlight or tail light at the time. >> then carter begins sending her threatening emails, reading, trust me, baby girl, you are going to lose everything. as god is my witness, punishment is on the way, so be prepared. >> it was just totally insane. >> tiana reports the incident to plainville police for violating the restraining order, only to be told by an officer the emails are non-threatening. the harassment continues with calls, texts and emails. her police lead nowhere. >> i didn't know why they didn't take my daughter seriously. she went and visited the police station 33 times in six weeks. >> tiana's mom says carter is also stalking tiana, sitting

outside her apartment in his car and watching her every move. >> he would just follow her everywhere. >> but still, her family claims the police take no action against carter. they say tiana is left in tears after one visit to the waterbury police department near the university, after he repeatedly called her at work. >> she was in her car crying hysterically and she says they thought i was lying. one officer accused me of having a fake restraining order. then i spoke with the sergeant that said, oh, nothing's going to happen to your daughter. he snarled at me. and i'm like, look, i don't want my daughter to become a statistic. and i'm telling you now, if something happens to my daughter, you better move to another planet. >> things get really scary when tiana finds her car vandalized in her apartment parking lot. >> tiana texts me and she said that my tires were slashed. my car. and i said, did you see somebody do it? she said no.

>> but police tell her there is no way to prove carter was responsible. >> what? i said, if we have a video, hands down, we got something. >> so her worried dad installs a security camera in her parking lot aimed toward her car. >> i spent four hours with tiana that night, just kind of going over some of the things we actually did a role play as to if someone was coming at you, where would you go? >> tiana returns home the next night to find a letter pinned to her front door reading tiana, forgive me. i never cheated on you. lying, may god take my life. forgive me for everything else i have done. >> the unfortunate thing for us. the tape ran out. >> so once again, no video evidence against carter. but this time, plainville police attempt to call carter to come and give a handwriting sample. >> thank god we were celebrating and i told her. i said, tiana, don't go anywhere near your

the expression that the receptionist, when we identifien the surgeon, one of the surgeons that came out to tell us we're going to find a place to meet. >> so we waited. >> and then the team of doctors came in. and they told me we did everything we could. wen did hand massage on her heart. but she had lost too much blood and we couldn't revive her. and she's gone. >> so. i went and identified her. she's on a table, looked at her. there was stab wounds horre moment all over again. >> i went yelling, screaming. i tore up that room. i said, how

could you allow this to happen, lord? i was so angry at him. i raised her in your word. i raised a good kid. how could you allow this to happen? i was so mad. i was so mad. >> the first thing come to mind is who did it? didn't have to think too long because i'm saying i know who did it. >> so did the cops. thanks to tiana. ultimately, her dying words helped identify her attacker. >> i stabbed me to death. >> james carter, the second was tried and convicted. now serving 60 years without parole for the savage slaying of tiana. notice it will never be enough for her parents. >> i really wanted to get to the bottom of it. looking at face value, what was going on, i realized that there was a system failure. >> and alvin was determined to fix it and he knew what was
