plus. >> it's horrifying, especially for someone that yo know and. >> valti's day attack a teenager is killed while on a date at a busy s the new details we're learning about the victim tonight. and no kings on presidents day. the rallying cry from protesters across the country and the bay area. >> ktvu fox two news at five starts now >> good evening, i'm claudine wong. and we begin with a where a delta carrying 80 people flipped over and landed on its roof as it was landing this afternoon. several people were injured, but miraculously, every person on board survived. ktvu news anchor alex savage joins us in studio with the very latest developments. >> alex. yeah, claudine. that delta flight was headed from to toronto from minneapolis today, and it was landing in snowy

conditions. and there were gusty winds at the time. and as the plane was trying to make that landing, it flipped over and caught fire. obviously, authorities still trying to figure out exactly what went wrong. in this video from storyful. you can see flames coming from that plane. fire crews rushed in quickly to put water on the plane and put out that fire. out of the 80 passengers and crew members who were on board, at least 17 people were hurt. but fortunately, authorities say most of the injuries are relatively minor and everyone on board is expected to survive. as far as the cause of this crash, experts tell us it's possible the rough weather in toronto today played a role. and aviation expert i talked to and a retired pilot said that the winds gusting up to 40mph. and she believes that the plane should have probably been going faster to compensate. >> that airplane. in my opinion, based on my professional experience, was going too slow

for the weather reported. it looks to me that they did a crosswind technique. the wing got too close to the runway, caught the runway, snapped the wing off. >> flights were grounded for several hours today, but the toronto airport has mostly reopened. this is now at least the fourth major aviation accident in north america just in the past month. that includes the deadly collision of a commercial jetliner and an army helicopter near washington, dc. that medical jet that crashed in philadelphia and a small plane crash in alaska. the faa said in a statement that the national canada will be heading up this investigation into the toronto crash and providing any updates as they get them. also, the ntsb said today it will be providing a team to assist in the canadian

investigation. claudine. >> all right. it's scary moments, but glad everyone survived. all right. thanks, alex. well, new at five. we have learned the name of the 15 year-old boy who was stabbed to death at santana row. friends and family tell ktvu david gutierrez passed away at the hospital after he was stabbed at that busy shopping district on valentine's day. our crime reporter henry lee joins us live from santana row tonight with the very latest, henry. >> well, claudine, he had his whole life ahead of him, only to be killed here at santana row while on a date on valentine's day. after a confrontation at santana row in san jose ended in the deadly stabbing of 15 year old david gutierrez on valentine's day. according to his family on gofundme, david was on a date with his girlfriend wn he was attacked by a group of teenagers. his family says david waseaten and stabbed in the heart. it olsen t the bustling shopping district at about 715 friday night. san

jose police responded to reports of a large fight. the attackers fled before officers arrived. david was taken to a hospital where he died. >> it's a tragedy that we got to lose someone so young over something so small. >> david had trained with berto at gladiators boxing gym in redwood city, where he lived. >> he was a good kid. he was for sure, leader. if i tell him to leave the classroom with the class, he knew what he was doing. he paid attention even. yeah, he just someone i could relate to when i was young. >> attana row on monday, there were no signs of the violence as shoppers took advantage of presidents day sales. we spotted the san jose police officers on patrol, their usual assignment during business hours. shoppers we spoke to were shocked by what happened. gail and john price used to live in san jose but moved to reno a decade ago. >> it's sad, sadness, devastated how the family must feel. >> no respect for human life. >> yeah, yeah, that's. >> it's like throwaway society. your television don't work. get a new one. if you don't like

this person, kill them. get another friend. >> it's not the first thing you want to see when you're looking up a place. >> that this couple was visiting santana row for the first time from sacramento, and learned about the stabbing online while looking up store information. >> i'm still uncomfortable even just being around in this area after knowing, like the violence that went on. >> definitely not okay to let something like that happen, especially in such a nice area. it seems like you won't really see something like that happening. >> in a statement, san jose mayor matt mehan said as we await more details about this tragic death, my thoughts are with the victim's family, who are undoubtedly reeling from this horrific loss. i have full confidence that our police officers will pursue every lead, to bring the perpetrator of this senseless violence to justice. now, the circumstances leading up to the killing are under investigation, and anyone with information or surveillance video is asked to contact san jose police. live in san jose, henry lee, ktvu, fox two news. >> and henry. so at this point,

you just said that we're still waiting for more information, but we don't know if he knew his attackers or how long this confrontation went on. he was on his date with his girlfriend. so i'm assuming they have, you know, some place to go in terms of trying to get some information. >> right. we know the attackers left. and so san jose police ard leading up to the stabbing. >> okay. we'll continue to follow it. henry lee reporting live. thank you. henry. well, san jose police say they have arrested several people after a huge fight broke out downtown over the weekend. it happened early sunday morning near san pedro square. that area was busy with valentine's day celebrations and nba all-star events. police say a big fight[q broke out and that turned intobo arrest people who were involved. other people tried to attack them. and that started another fight. some of the officers involved suffered minor injuries. well, protesters gathered across the country and here in the bay area to express their frustration with the trump

administration on president's day. more than a thousand people took to the streets in san jose, holding up anti-trump signs and calling his recent policies anti-democratic and illegal. ktvu, an rubin live there with more anne. >> yeah, this rally was peaceful, but vocal protesters say they're hoping if they make enough noise, their government representatives will listen. >> the theme of thisnt's day protest no dictators. and in san jose, more than a thousand people showed up expressing their frustration with the state of the government. >> we knew trump was bad, but we didn't know elon was going to be the president. and i think that we're kind of off about that. that is,ngs are going the wrong direction. >> this protest was part of 5051, a grassroots movement holding 50 protests in 50 states on one day. >> it is more than president trump and elon musk ignoring the will, the people. it's also them

ignoring the fundamental basis of the american way. >> similar but unrelated protests were held in san francisco and in oakland, marcht everything from immigration to women's rights to government overreach. >> the disappointment i had in. >> the election, how my family feels about the new presidency and the government and the people that are part of t government but weren't elected to the government. >> i don't want to deal with the racism, the sexism, all this just hate that is pouring out of the white house right now. shouldn't be facing towards us americans. it should be facing towards the president. >> protesters in san jose say this is just the beginning. they're hoping their voices will be heard and that this will be a call to action. >> it may also encourage them to talk to their federal representatives and say, we would like you to actually do something, and here's how we feel about it. >> i just feel like we just need more people, and i don't think anything is going to change,

unfortunately. >> this is actually the second time this month that the 5051 movement has organized a mass rally. they also held a similar event back on february 5th. we're live in san jose. ann ruben, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right. thank you, ann, for that report. and thousands of people across the country also took to the streets today. you're looking at video from boston, tampa, austin and washington dc of the so-called no king's day rallies. they are meant to draw attention to this recent stream of executive orders, mass layoffs of federal workers, and billionaire elon musk's apparent sway over the trump administration. the 5051 movement organized these rallies and based its name on that goal to hold 50 protests in all 50 states on one single day. well, nba all-star weekend is over. it is the first of three major events in the bay area over the next year and a half. ktvu james torres reports from san

francisco. >> from paradesthe nba all star game, san francisco kept busy. >> pretty wild. everyone's there. they're hyped. everyone's wearing their journey jerseys. you get to see that everyone has a different favorite fan and no, no seating room. but that's what keeps it exciting. >> excitement packed the city and so did the thousands of people exploring what nba all star weekend had to offer. the host city impressed nba commissioner adam silver. >> i had the opportunity since i've been commissioner to be here quite a lot. given the number of finals that the warriors have participated in. i've always enjoyed coming to this community, but i do sense a more energy these last several days here than i've experienced in a long time. >> san francisco's board of supervisors president rafael mandelman released a statement saying in part, san francisco's all star weekend was amazing for the city and was a huge and successful lift for the city's workers. a big thank you to the folks from sfpd public works,

the department of emergency management, the fire department, and all the cityyees who stepped up for this weekend's events. all star weekend is the first of three major global events coming to the bay area over the next 18 months. the region's host committee predicts all star weekend. super bowl 60 and the world cup will bring in more than $1.4 billion and create tens of thousands of long lasting jobs. >> it's great. you know, i think it's been a long time coming to have something of this magnitude in san francisco since the pandemic. bring some life back to the city. and i see, you know, things growing. over the last couple of years, i've seen more people coming into the city for certain things, and this is one of the big ones. >> there was a whole great concert series, a new bar at thrive city that debuted just ahead of the all star weekend, y sighting anywhere in town.

he black panther party museum in oakland is unveiling a new exhibit aiming to show the party's history from the panther members perspective and those they served. ktvu jana katsuyama joins us live with parts of the black panther history that are often overlooked. >> yes, there's a lot there. claudine. and it's really interesting to see this new black party. black panther party museum it has only been open for about a year, but today marks the 30th anniversary of the huey newton foundation, and i spoke with newton's widow about what this new exhibit means to panther party history. sometimes history isn't just a thing of the past, but a living dialog. and inside the black panther party museum in downtown oakland. >> most of its history has been demonized. >> a new exhibit is making room

for new voices. >> and so we do a lot of work here to rectify that narrative and make sure panthers can speak for themselves. >> the museum's co-founder, xavier buck, who has a phd in history, says thexhibitival pen, highlights the party's sweeping survival programs for black people in the 1960s and 70s, often unseen or overlooked by media at the time. >> this right here is the 65 survival programs that the panthers had. this isn't just in oakland. this is all around the country. >> those programs included free breakfast for children education, free testing for sickle cell anemia and other health conditions, and even a free ambulance service in winston-salem, north9- carolina. >> it was a very racist in north carolina, and they would not pick up black people in their neighborhood to take them to the doctor. so the panthers, they got a hearse. they converted into an ambulance. they trained as emts, and they did 24 seven ambulance services for their community. >> the aim was to help the black community survive, thrive and

find political empowerment. the new exhibit comes as the doctor huey newton foundation celebrates its 30th anniversary this year on the birthday, february 17th, of newton, who co-founded the black panther party. >> if he were alive today, he would be 83 years old. so yeah, we're here in his spirit. >> his widow, fredrika newton, has fought with other panther veterans to add depth and nuance to the history books. >> it didn't portray a brother as anything other than a scary, angry black man with a gun, but they didn't show him up at 5:00 in the morning feeding children. >> the museum has become a place to share personal stories of the racism they were fighting to overcome. now, the museum ia oae party began to share and preserve the oral histories of those who lived it first hand. >> that's history. that's history. it's very valuable.

>> and newton says that two thirds of the black panther party were women, ranging in age from 14 to 25. these were young people who wanted better for their community. so, claudine, the social survival programs really were their way to empower people in their own community and kind of lay out a vision for what they hoped for, for the future. >> it's so interesting, and there's so many parts of the black panther history that people don't know. but also this museum is new. and so i imagine some people are are looking and saying, oh, i didn't realize this was open. i didn't realize this exhibit was there. so the question is, how long will this exhibit be up? >> well, the museum is hoping that they'll have it up for the whole year. and one of the things that's great is it's right downtown. it's just around the corner from city hall on broadway. and they also said that their archives are with stanford university. stanford is in the middle of trying to digitize all of those so that can be available, available for the public. and they're hoping for that this coming spring. >> allight. very interesting. so people have some time to make some plans to get out there. all

right. great story. thank you. >> yeah that was really interesting. thank you so much, jana. and hello, everybody. good evening to you.mf here's a gandr a look at today's high temperatures across the bay area. and they're pretty close to average. san francisco typically you should be at 60 today. you checked in at 57 degrees. a rather cool winter day here in the bay area, but not too far off the mark. it was 61, in concord. this is our live weather camera looking at. oh, i got to get out at this. isn't tt glorious? we're looking out in the east bay towards mount diablo now at the base, at 1600 feet at the tip top, just over 3800ft. and the air temperatures there is 55. and you got to have a little bit of perspective here. these clouds are roughly at 2500ft. so they look a lot higher than they actually are. temperatures currently across the board. it's still in the 60s in napa. otherwise we're all into the 50s. it is now 54 and half moon bay, with the wind gusts up to 21mph, a sustained

wind at 15. it's a breezy evening in progress. mountain view gusts at 15 to the north. we've had breezy conditions around nevada, with the wind gusts now at 18mph. we have this area of low pressure. that's what's increasing the wind at this hour. we do have some precipitation across humboldt and trinity counties. a little bit of smattering of snow at mount shasta. but look at the plume of moisture, all the trails back to the hawaiian islands. it wants to push into the bay area. not tomorrow. we'll see increasing clouds during the day, but check this out. rain to the north. by wednesday morning. we'll track it together and tell you how much to expect. claudine. that's still coming up. >> all right. thank you. roberta. well, it was a very busy weekend for sideshows across the bay area as multiple agencies responded to sideshows that broke out in several locations across our region. and 500 days of war has left a profound impact on gaza. and now, as leaders try to forge a path ahead, there remains stark disagreement between lawmakers about president t mp's push

well, there were several sideshows across the bay area over the weekend that shut down streets and prompted police crackdowns. you're looking at the scene in oakland at maritime and grand avenue. this is near the port of oakland, and multiple people could be seen in the videozg hanging out of car windows as cars spun donuts underneath interstate 880. and

we want to show you some video from richmond. this is where a huge crowd also gathered. this was at the intersection of carlson and 55th. police officers were on scene there and that sideshow was broken up quickly. let's take you now to daly city, where a huge crowd shut down the area at mission and beckler streets. there, multiple people could be seen with lasers. police officers from colma, san francisco and daly city finally broke up that show. and then on the bay bridge, traffic, as you can see here, was at a standstill. this was east of treasure island. officers and pedestrians could be seen walking on that roadway before that sideshow was finally cleared out. the chp says the driver of a lexus left their vehicle and then tried to run. he was arrested and charged with dui. that car and another abandoned vehicle were both impounded, and riverside county sheriff chad bianco is now officially a candidate for california governor. he announced his bid today in riverside to replace the termed

out governor gavin newsom. bianco, an outspoken supporter of president trump, was first elected sheriff in 2018 and then was reelected in 2022. he says the state's democratic leadership is to blame for what he calls the decline of california. >> what is it that they have given us? rampant crime, higher taxes, the highest cost of living in our nation, tent encampments in every major city, catastrophic fires, a broken homeowners insurance market, and people across our state are struggling to afford groceries and gas. >> we can't give up. >> last year, several democrats declared their candidacy, including lieutenant governor eleni kounalakis. former vice president kamala harris has brushed off questions about running. but polling suggests she would have a clear shot at victory if she does. well, new drone footage captures the devastation to northern gaza after 500 days of war. about

1200 israelis and more than 48,000 palestinians have been killed since the war began on october 7th, 2023. and earlier this month, president donald trump shocked world leaders by saying he wants the u.s. to take over gaza when the war ends. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu seems to be on board, but some in the senate say that plan is a nonstarter. fox's rebecca kastner has the latest. >> a burned out car is all that remains after an israeli drone strike took out a h commander in southern lebanon on monday. a sign that tensions between israel and the militant group are still high. >> my dear friend marco. >> but on sunday, israeli pri ns all smiles, welcoming secretary of state marco rubio grateful for the us support. >> president trump is the greatest friend that israel has ever had in the white house. >> the high praise comes just two weeks after president trump said he wants the u.s. to take

save sonoma state university's athletics, academics and faculty is gaining momentum as one up and coming nba star has entered the chat. fresh off his appearance at the nba all-star weekend, memphis grizzlies forward jalen wells stuck around in the bay area to oppose the cuts to his alma mater, ktvu tom vacar spent the day on campus and has this update. >> kind of raises a lot of good things that happened here. >> not only is jalen wells, a memphis grizzlies officially designated rising star, he's also a sonoma state basketball alumnus. >> i'm just hoping that we can find a way to be saved. make it back to what it was. and to elevate it. and once it is saved. >> he opposes the slash and burn approach to all of its

the impacted roles include radar landing and navigational aid maintenance. and late today, the transportation department said that air aviation consultant and former sfo spokesman mike mccarron told us the firings could impact aviation safety long term. >> just for example, at san francisco international, there is what's called instrument landing system. it's a ground based system which is used virtually around the clock because of bad weather conditions, low visibility fog. so if those systems aren't proper maintained, you either have to restrict operations or go to some other airport. the eo were fired were working on a classified early warning radar system in hawaii designed to detect incoming cruise missiles. that program is funded in part by the defense department. well, san francisco's chinese new year

parade started off with a bang over the weekend. organizers expected about 3 million people to turn out on saturday to watch the parade in person and on television. and oakland is getting ready for its own lunar new year celebrations this year for the first time, it's the third annual parade is sponsored the oakland chinatown lunar new year festival and parade is set for this saturday, february 22nd and ktvu cristina rendon caught up with the oakland chinatown improvement council to talk about the preparations ahead. >> in oakland's chinatown district. shops are decorated for the year of the snake. very soon, these streets will come alive for the hyundai oakland chinatown, lunar new year festival and parade. organizers say it was challenging putting on the parade due to city budget cuts. but hyundai stepped in as a title sponsor to cover all the costs. >> i'm excited. we're all excited. >> stewart chen of t economic improvement council says the event and route has

gr■own since 2023. >> this year we're going to have car shows. we're going to have festivities. we're going to have vendors, we're going to have stage performance, and it's a lot longer route. >> more than 40 organizations are taking part, with roughly 600 people set to walk in the parade on saturday, february 22nd. the parade is packed with live performances including lion dancers, drummers and more. >> we have about 20 different vendors and it's going to be diverse group of vendors. so not only chinese food, there's going to be all types, all types of food for everybody to enjoy. >> alice street bakery and cafe is one of the many businesses hoping for an economic boost. >> lots of new people come getting into oakland and see like what was going on. it sounds like pretty excited. >> hong kong native tao and her husband have owned this spot at the corner of alice and 10th for nearly nine years. it's filled with cakes, sandwiches, and traditional american and chinese pastries, baked fresh daily. >> my wife kate, big wife and

small wife. some other bakeries. they have the husband cake, but we have a wife cake. wife. always sweet. >> the oakland chinatown improvement council is hoping this year's festivities are just as successful as last september's night market, where thousands showed up and vendors sold out. >> we have seen a 20 to 50% increase in just merchant activities sales from a lot of the events that we've thrown in the past, like night market and lunar new year parade. >> the hope is that getting people excited to come to oakland and seeing chinatown's hospitality will have them return for many weekends tohavee grocery people actually come to oakland chinatown. we're a hub from people all over the bay area. oakland chinatown is a living, breathing community. >> this is the third annual parade after bringing it back. it's grown over the years. this time, they expect anywhere between 10 to 15,000 people.

over the weekend in kentucky. at least 12 deaths are being blamed on the storm. today, officials in some states are in recovery mode, while others are warning about more extreme weather to come. fox's olivia combs is in tennessee, where first responders are getting a clearer picture of the extent of the damage from the weekend's heavy rains. >> aerial footage over reeves tennessee revealing homes underwater. the severe flooding, a result of relentless rains culminating in a deadly flash flooding event across the tennessee valley. >> it's historic flooding here. we had a levee breach which caused the river to flow back

this law was invoked to arrest thousands of, quote unquote, enemy alien residents, including mr. ichiro kataoka, the proprietor of the akai hotel on post street, just down the street from here. he was the first japanese to be detained in san francisco. >> he would not be the last. more than 120,000 people of japanese descent were sent to internment camps because they were deemed a threat to national security. 70,000 were american citizens. >> when they removed the leadership of the community, they broke up families. and so all these families lost, you know, their fathers, basically. and so what we're seeing in detention today is an exact replication of this dynamic. they're breaking families apart. they're separating them. >> the impact was enduring both financially and emotionally. >> you know, we're just only beginning to understand the deep

>> cattle numbers in the u.s. have dropped to its lowest in about 70 years, as the department of agriculture reports a 2% decrease in january from the previous year. it declined. >> again to about 87 million head in total. >> texas a&m professor and economist david anderson sayse country are to blame. >> cattle production starts with grasses and pastures and out on the range. and when it when we have a drought, there's no grass. and so we end up with fewer cows. >> the drop in cattle inventory is causing higher prices for beef, which are starting to catch up to costs for calves. >> we've gone through a series of years with low calf prices and higher costs. and so really that combination of low prices and high costs means, you know, we start reducing the number of cows. >> with beef prices reaching record highs. already this year, anderson expects it will eventually lead to ranchers expanding their herds to help offset the costs.
