a family and comty in mourning after a teenager is killed after a fight at a bustling shopping district in san jose. >> this is ktvu fox two news at six. >> it's tragedy that we got to lose someone so young over something so small. >> a young man on a valentine's date at a busy shopping center in san jose stabbed and killed. those who knew the 15 year old trying to come to grips with their loss. good evening, i'm greg lee. we are learning more tonight about 15 year-old david gutierrez. he was killed over the weekend at santana row in san jose. our crime reporter henry lee joins us live from the shopping center with the very latest, henry. >> well, he had his whole life ahead of him, only to fall to a violent attack, stabbed to death while on a date with his girlfriend on a confrontation at santana row in san jose ended in the deadly stabbing of 15 year old david gutierrez on valentine's day,

according to his family on gofundme. david was on a date with his girlfriend when he was attacked by a group of teenagers. his family says david was beaten and stabbed in the heart. it happened along olsen avenue at the bustling shopping district at about 715 friday night. san jose police responded to reports of a large fight. the attackers fled before officers arrived. david was taken to a hospital where he died. >> it's a tragedy that we got to lose someone so young over something so small. >> david had trained with berto at gladiators boxing gym in redwood city, where he lived. >> he was a good kid. he was for sure leader. if i tell him to leave the classroom with the class, he knew what he was doing. he paid attention even. yeah. he's just someone i could relate to. when i was young. >> at santana row on monday, there were no signs of the violence as shoppers took advantage of presidents day sales. we spotted the san jose police officers on patrol, their usual assignment during business hours. shoppers we spoke to were shocked by what happened. gail

and john price used to live in san jose but moved to reno a decade ago. >> it's sad. sadness, devastated how the family must feel. >> no respect for human life. >> yeah, that's. >> it's like throwaway society. you television don't work. get a new one. if you don't like this person, kill them. get another friend. >> it's not the first thing you want to see when you're looking up a place that. >> this couple was visiting santana row for the first time from sacramento and learned about the stabbing online while looking up store information. >> i'm still uncomfortable even just being around in this area after knowing, like, the violence that went on. >> definitely not okay to let something like that happen, especially in such a nice area. it seems like you wouldn't really see something like that happening. >> in a statement, san jose mayor matt mehan said as we await more details about this tragic death, my thoughts are with the victim's family, who are undoubtedly reeling from this horrific loss. i have full confidence that our police officers will pursue every lead

to bring the perpetrator of this senseless violence to justice. now the circumstances of the killing are under investigation, and anyone with information is asked to contact san jose police. live in san jose. henry lee, ktvu, foxwo news. >> yeah, just a heartbreaking loss for this family, henry. thank you. san jose police say they've arrested several people after a huge fight broke out downtown over the weekend near san pedro square. it happened early yesterday morning around 1230. the area is still crowded with people out and about. san jose police say a fight broke out and turned into a brawl. police say when they tried to arrest people who were involved, others tried to attack them, starting another fight. a surfer was rescued near the golden gate bridge this morning after his surfboard broke in half. the san francisco fire department says the surfer was hit by a, quote, aggressive wave around 11 when his surfboard broke, causing him to tumble in the surf line. fire and police crews carried out the rescue near fort point. they say the surfer was safely brought on

board a rescue boat and was not injured. a man who fell into san francisco bay over the weekend is still missing. authorities say the man and a woman fell into the water near pier 32, just south of the bay bridge, saturday night. the woman was pulled from the water and taken to the hospital with non life threatening injuries. firefighters and the coast guard continued looking for the man using boats, thermal imaging and drones, but suspended that search at noon yesterday. there is no word yet on how the two ended up in the water in the first place. it is hard to believe when you see this video, but no one was killed and few serious injuries after a delta plane flipped upside landed in y toronto. the delta airlines flight was coming from minneapolis with 80 people on board when it ended up on its roof as it was landing this afternoon. several people were injured, but miraculously, everyone on board survived. ktvu claudine wong joins us in studio with the very latest developments. claudine. >> yeah. truly remarkable. this

delta flight wasanding in rough weather. the snowy conditions and strong, gusty winds all happened this afternoon. and as you can see, it flipped over and it caught fire. in this video from storyful, you can see the flames coming out of the plane on what was the underside of the plane. and there you see the fire crews rushing in to hose it all down. a fire officials said tonight that out of the 76 passengers and four crew members on board, 17 people were taken to local hospitals. but fortunately, authorities say they're all expected to survive and most of the injuries were relatively minor. now, as for the cause of the crash, experts say it is possible the weather in toronto played a role. an aviation expert and retired pilot told us that with those winds gusting up to 40mph, she believes the plane should have been going faster to compensate. >> that airplane. in my opinion, based on my professionalex goinw

for the weather reported. it looks to me that they did a crosswind technique. the wing got too close to the runway, caught the runway, snapped the wing off. >> flights were grounded for several hours, but the toronto airport has mostly reopened. but this is now at least the fourth major aviation accident in north america just in the past month. and thats the deadly collision of a commercial jetliner and an army helicopter in washington, dc, a medical jet crash in philadelphia, and a small plane crash in alaska. now that former pilot told us it is a tribute to the training and the professionalism of the crew, that everyone did get out of thathe transportation safety board of canada is going to head up the investigation into this toronto crash and will provide any

updates. greg. >> yeah. pretty remarkable. claudine. thank you. the trump administration has fired hundreds of employees at the federal aviation administration. probationary workers were notified late friday via email that they had been terminated. the impacted roles include radar landing and navigational aid maintenance. the transportation department says no air traffic controllers were affected or others who performed critical safety functions. earlier today on the four. aviation consultant mike mccarran told us what the firings could mean for aviation safety. >> just for example, at san francisco international, there's what's called instrument landing system. it's a ground based system which is used virtually around the clock because of bad weather conditions, low visibility fog. so if those systems aren't properly maintained, you either have to restrict operations or go to some other airport. >> some of the employees who were fired were working on a classified early warning radar system in hawaii designed to

detect incoming cruise missiles. that program is funded in part by the defense department. a rare holiday court hearing took place this morning in a case against the department of government efficiency. the case was brought by democratic state attorneys general from 14 states, including california. in their lawsuit, the states argue elon musk was illegally appointed, and they're calling for the court to stop the organization's drastic cuts across the federal government. the judge says she will try to rule in 24 hours on the request to block musk. the pentagon is now bracing for intense scrutiny from musk, and that department of government efficiency is. fox's jennifer griffin. shows us the defense department has never passed an audit and is notorious for contractor price gouging. >> we welcome those to the pentagon. >> tasked with cutting 8% from the defense department's $850 billion budget. the first dodge team members arrived last week at the pentagon, which employs 3.7 million people and has never

president's day. protesting the president. nearly 1000 demonstrators took to the streets in boston. the 5051 movement calling the demonstrations no kings on presidents day. the protest denouncing president trump and elon musk. a similar protest in

tampa. not my presidents day demonstrators also having issues with the recent stream of executive orders and federal firings. they also argue that musk is being given too much power for someone who was not elected. the 5051 movement is named based on its goal to hold protests in all 50 states in one single day. not all of today's demonstrations were against president trump. supporters of the president gathered outside his golf course there in west palm beach. former proud boys leader enrique tarrio stopped by the rally to show his support. last month after the presidentn pardoned him and the other rioters who stormed the u.s. capitol four years ago. tarrio had been serving a 22 year sentence when he was pardoned. protesters gathered in several spots here in the bay area to express their frustration with the trump administration. more than a thousand people took to the streets in san jose, holding up anti-trump his recent policies anti-democratic and illegal. ktvu an rubin reports.

>> the theme of this presidents day protest. no dictators. and in san jose, more than 1000 people showed up expressing their frustration with the state of the government. >> we knew trump was bad, but we didn't know elon was going to be the president. and i think that we're kind of off about that. that is, things are going in the absolute wrong direction. >> this protest was part of 5051, a grassroots movement holding 50 protests in 50 states on one day. >> it is more than president trump and elon musk ignoring the will, the people. it's also them ignoring the fundamental basis of the american way. >> similar but unrelated protests were held in san francisco and in oakland, too, with marchers concerned about everything from immigration to women's rights to government overreach. >> the disappointment i had in the election, how my family feels about the new presidency and the and the government and the people that are part of the

government but weren't elected to the government. >> i don't want to deal with the racism, the sexism, all this just hate that is pouring out of the white house right now. shouldn't be facing towards us americans. it should be facing towards the president. >> protesters in san jose say this is just the beginning. they're hoping their voices will be heard and that this will be a call to action. >> it may also encourage them to talk to their federal representatives and say, we would like you to actually do something, and here's how we feel about it. >> i just feel like we just need more people and i don't think anything is going to change, unfortunately. >> this rally was peaceful, but vocal protesters say they are hoping if they make enough noise, their government representatives will listen. in san jose, ann rubin, ktvu, fox two news. >> as part of black history month, the black panther museum in oakland is unveiling a new exhibit. it aims to show the party's history of providing essential social services needed by the black community. ktvu jana katsuyama reports on a part

of black panther history that is often overlooked. >> sometimes history isn't just a thing of the past, but a living dialog. and inside the black panther party museum in downtown oakland. >> most of its history has been demonized. >> a new exhibit is making room for new voices. >> and so we do a lot of work here to rectify that narrative and make sure panthers can speak for themselves. >> the museum's co-founder, xavier buck, who has a phd in history, says the exhibit survival pending revolution, highlights the party's sweeping survival programs for black people in the 1960s and 70s, often unseen or overlooked by media at the time. >> this right here is the 65 survival programs that the panthers had. this isn't just in oakland. this is all around the country. >> those programs included free breakfast for children education, free testing for sickle cell anemia and other health conditions, and even a free ambulance service in winston-salem, north carolina. >> it was very racist in north

carolina, and they would not pick up black people in their neighborhood to take them to the doctor. so the panthers, they got a hearse, they converted it into an ambulance. they trained as emts, and they did 24/7 ambulance services for their community. >> the aim was to help the black community survive, thrive and find political empowerment. the new exhibit comes as the doctor huey newton foundation celebrates its 30th anniversary this year on the birthday, february 17th, of newton, who co-founded the black panther party. >> if he were alive today, he would be 83 years old. so yeah, we're here in his spirit. >> his widow, fredrika newton, has fought with other panther veterans to add depth and nuance to books. >> didn't portray a brother as anything other than a scary, angry black man with a gun. but they didn't show him up at 5:00 in the morning feeding children. >> the museum has become a place to share personal stories of the racism they were fighting to

over the health of pope francis, who was hospitalized over the weekend. vatican authorities said today. the 88 year old pontiff has a complex infection in his respiratory system and

will require more targeted drug treatment. experts say a respiratory infection is not uncommon in older people with prior medical problems, and should be treatable with the right antibiotics. it is unclear, however, how long that might take. members of the trump administration are expected to meet with russian officials tomorrow to negotiate an end to the war in ukraine. but as fox's alex hogan reports, there's one big problem. neither ukraine nor europe are being invited to those talks. >> secretary of state marco rubio arriving in saudi arabia's capital monday, a day ahead of high stakes talks to discuss ending russia's nearly three year war in ukraine. >> the fact that they're meeting tomorrow is really about trying to confirm, is putin really serious about these negotiations? he said yes to the president, but we also know that putin has some pretty unrealistic demands. >> this after president trump sunday said he's currently in the process of trying to get

peace, adding he believes russian counterpart vladimir putin wants to bring the war to an end. >> i think he wants to end it f. >> yet ukraine's president says his government has not been invited, warning he will not accept the outcome if ukraine doesn't take part. >> there is no any leader in the world who can really make a deal with putin without us, about us. >> also left out of the talks european allies french president emmanuel macron announcing an emergency summit to be held among european leade paris. this, as the trump administration insists it's working to strike a peace deal. >> president trump is rethinking the entire dynamic here. that has some people uncomfortable, but i think zelensky would be very wise to enter into this agreement. >> russia's foreign minister insists there is no room for europe in peace talks. meantime, the uk's prime minister says he's ready to send british peacekeeping troops to ukraine

if and when the war ends. in london, alex hogan ktvu, fox two news. >> arab states are working to come up with a plan for gaza that does not involve the u.s. taking over the region. earlier this month, president trump said he wants the u.s. to take over gaza after the war between israel and hamas comes to an end. today, secretary of state marco rubio met with saudi arabia's crown prince to discuss gaza, among other issues. in israel, a bipartisan group of senators agreed that hamas should no longer control gaza, but had different opinions on what comes next. >> i will work with israel to find countries that would host palestinians if they choose to leave. but we're not talking about a force exodus. >> my view is that the trump plan is a non plan. it's a hot mess. the possibility of takeover by the united states is a nonstarter. >> several arab states are expected to presenternative

the first of three major sporting events planned for the bay area over the next year and a half. it will be followed by super bowl 60 and the world cup. ktvu james torres reports from san francisco on how this past weekend seems to be a good sign of things to come. >> from paradesev nba all star game, san francisco kept busy. >> pretty wild. everyone's there. they're hyped. everyone's wearing their journey jerseys, so you get to see that everyone has a different favorite fan and no, no seating room. but that's what keeps it exciting. >> excitement packed the city, and so did the thousands of people exploring what nba all-star weekend had to offer. the host city impressed nba commissioner adam silver. >> i had the opportunity since i've been commissioner to be here, here quite a lot, given the number of finals that the warriors have participated in. i've always enjoyed coming to this community, but i do sense more energy these last several days here than i've experienced in aan francisco's board of

supervisors president rafael mandelman released a statement saying in part, san francisco's all star weekend was amazing for the city and was a huge and successful lift for the city's workers. a big thank you to the folks from sfpd public works, the department of emergency management, the fire city emploo stepped up for this weekend's events. all stareekend is the first of three major global events coming to the bay area over the next 18 months. the region's host committee predicts all star weekend. super bowl 60l bring in more than $1.4 billion and create tens of thousands of long lasting jobs. >> it's great. you know, i think it's been a long time coming to have something of this magnitude in san francisco. since the paem life back to the city. and i see, you know, things growing. over the last couple of years, i've seen more

his thanks to his dad, who surprised him with tickets to the game in the first place. >> i got to see adam silver. he gave me a high five and then they kept saying, jump in the money. jump in the money. you did. so i jumped in theascots s. it was such a crazy moment. it was the one that gave me this opportunity and let me shine in the moment. and i know he wanted me to do this and just give it my all and be great. >> what a moment. as we mentioned, that shot was worth $100,000. barajas grew up in oakley and went to freedom high school. he's currently a freshman at los medanos college. he said he plans to save some of the money and use some to pay to go to a four year college. he plans to major in business. a rising nba star who appeared at the all star event, stuck around the bay area today to show support for athletes at his alma mater. memphis grizzlies forward jalen wells went to sonoma state to help in the fight tsa

university's athletics, which were cut earlier this year. ktvu tom vacar reports. >> it kind of raises a lot of good things that happened here. >> not only is jalen wells, a memphis grizzlies officially designated rising star, he's also a sonoma state basketball alumnus. >> i'm just hoping that we can find a way to be saved, make it back to what it was and to elevate it once it is saved. >> he opposes the slash and burn approach to all of its athletics. several other academic departments, numerous majors, and upwards of 117 faculty, lecturers and staff, students and staff were all caught completely unaware on the first day of this term. >> it was just so unfair how they did it. we were all on our way to class and we all received the same email. >> there wasn't really much of a like opportunity for them to fight back against this. so just hoping that, you know, they give

is now officially a candidate for california governor. he announced his bid today in riverside to replace the turned out governor, gavin newsom, in 2026. bianco, an outspoken supporter of president trump, is the highest profile republican to enter the race. he says the state's democratic leadership is to blame for what he calls the decline of california. >> what is it that they have given us? rampant crime, higher taxes, the highest cost of living in our nation. it happens in every major city. more

in kentucky, governor newsom has authorized the deployment of four incident support team members to assist in the

response and recovery efforts there from the california fema urban search and rescue task force. teams from oakland, sacramento, and san diego. the governor also says the state is prepared to offer additional emergency support if requested. the stormy weather is being blamed for the deaths of nearly a dozen people in kentucky alone. today, officials in some states are in recovery mode, while others are warning about more extreme weather to come. fox's olivia khamis is in tennessee, where first responders are getting a clearer picture of the extent ofto the damage. >> aerial footage over reeves tennessee revealing homes underwater. the severe flooding, a result of relentless rains culminating in a deadly flash flooding event across the tennessee valley. >> it's historic flooding here. we had a levee breach which caused the river to flow back into the town, and once it started flowing over our levees, everything we were pumping out was just coming right back in. >> the extreme mid-february weather, stretching across multiple states over the weekend, canceling or delaying

see wind chills dropping 30 to 60 degrees below zero in reeves. >> checking in on the weather. we've got some showers in the forecast as we head into wednesday, but not a big deal. not enough to change plans over, but enough that if you were painting a house or something like that in marin county or in berkeley, you may want to consider taking that day off wednesday. these are the highs from today. lots of upper 50s and low 60s. pretty mild out there. 63 in fairfield, 63 in vallejo, 64 in san rafael. tomorrow's temperatures are going to be about the same. and then wednesday they cool a little bit and then get that chance of some sprinkles in the north bay on wednesday and then thursday, friday, saturday and into sunday. temperatures go back into the upper 60s, maybe even low 70s towards the end of the week. so we'll get to that. so here's the wednesday system going by right there. and this is a long range forecast. so basically we've got pretty much dry conditions right through

had to be rescued this morning from flood waters in detroit, but not because of the weather, but a massive water main break. it happened early this morning, sending a gush of water that flooded basement streets and stranded families in their homes and submerged cars in icy water. between 150 and 200 homes were impacted. first responders helped those trapped by the flooding. for many students in northern california, this week is ski week, a time to take advantage of all the fresh powder up at lake tahoe. maricela de la cruz reports on the conditions from the sierra. >> ready to help. >> this is the kids school break and we are here to enjoy some snow. >> president's day weekend and ski week, making for a great combination to drive out to the sierra. >> i don't get to go to the snow
