protests. the demonstrations today pushing back on the trump administration's efforts to shrink the federal workforce. >> this is ktvu, fox two news at 730. >> those opposed to the president's downsize plan using this federal holiday to speak out against the firing of thousands of federal workers. good evening, everyone, i'm heather holmes. all across the country, people protested president trump and the growing influence of billionaire elon musk. want to show you now the scene in washington, d.c. today, an estimated 2000 people gathered here in front of the capitol. organizers called it the no king's day rally. protests also took place right here in the bay area. this one that you see here is in oakland. a rally was held near the grand lake theater close to lake merritt. people carrying signs critical of the trump administration and elon musk. another protest was held at oakland's fruitvale plaza earlier this afternoon, and more than a thousand people took to

the streets in san jose. as you see here, holding up anti-trump signs calling his recent policies anti-democratic and illegal. the protest remained peaceful. ktvu zen rubin was there, and she heard from protesters who say they are hoping to make enough noise for change. >> the theme of this president's day protest no dictators. and in san jose, more than a thousand people showed up expressing their frustration with the state of the government. >> we knew trump was bad, but we didn't know elon was going to be the president. and i think that we're kind of off about that. that is, things are going in the absolute wrong direction. >> this protest was part of 5051, a grassroots movement holding 50 protests in 50 states on one day. >> it is more than president trump andn musk ignoring the will, the people. it's also them ignoring the fundamental basis of the american way. >> similar but unrelated protests were held in san

francisco and in oakland, too, with marchers concerned about everything from immigration to women's rights to government overreach. >> the disappointment i had in the election, how my family feels about t presidency and the government and the people that are part of the government but weren't elected to the government. >> i don't want to deal with the racism, the sexism, all this just hate that is pouring out of the white house right now. shouldn't be facing towards us americans. it should be facing towards the president. >> protesters in san jose say this is just the beginning. they are hoping their voices will be heard and that this will be a call to action. >> it may also encourage them to talk to their federal representatives and say, we would like you to actually do something, and here's how we feel about it. >> i just feel like we just need more people and i don't think anything is going to change, unfortunately. >> ts rally was peaceful, but vocal protesters say they are hoping if they make enough noise, their government representatives will listen. in

san jose, ann rubin, ktvu, fox two news. >> and protesters held a rally outside the tesla showroom in san francisco. >> it's right here, mommy. >> dozens gathered at the corner of vanness and o'farrell to protest trump's policies. and elon musk, who's been tasked with reducing the size of government. organizers say the demonstration was to remind the people of san francisco that supporting musk and his businesses, such as tesla, is bad for democracy. >> and musk, the richest guy in the world, who just bragged about eliminating programs that help feed the poorest people in the world, is not elected in any way to anything. >> organizers say the rally was peaceful. they say they did not enter the business, nor stop people from entering or exiting the property. not all of today's demonstrations, though, were against president trump supporters. the president gathered outside of his golf course in west palm beach. former proud boys leader enrique

tarrio stopped by the rally to show his support. tarrio was released from prison last month after the president pardoned him and the other rioters who stormed the u.s. capitol four years ago. tarrio had been serving a 22 year sentence when he was pardoned. and don't forget that you can keep track of our white house coverage by downloading the fox local app right there to your phone and smart tv. on to other news tonight, a new at 730 a berkeley camera store says it lost thousands of dollars worth of inventory and suffered major damage in a smash and grab robbery. security cameras at looking glass photo show a vehicle ramming right into the store's front entrance. this was on fifth street near bancroft early yesterday morning. inside, thieves stole an estimated $50,000 worth of inventory. looking glass has been in business for more than 50 years. owners say they are determined to keep going. a gofundme has been set up to help them get back on their feet. we are learning more tonight about the victim of a deadly stabbing that

took place over the weekend at santana row in san jose. 15 year-old david gutierrez was on a valentine's date with his girlfriend, according to his attacked by a group ofddenly teenagers. his family says that david was beaten and stabbed. it happened along olsen avenue at the bustling shopping district at about 715 friday night. san jose police responded to reports of a large fight, but the attackers left before officers arrived. david was taken to the hospital where he died, while those close to him mourn his death. people in the area, they're just shocked to learn what happened. >> he was a good kid. he was for sure leader. if i tell him to leave the classroom with the class, he knew what he was doing. he paid attention even. yeah. he's just someone i could relate to when i was young. >> i'm still uncomfortable even just being around in this area after knowing, like, the violence that went on. >> san jose mayor matt mehan shared his condolences with david's family, saying he has police officers that they work

to determine what led to that attack and bring the perpetrator of the violent attack to justice. a surfer was rescued near the golden gate bridge today after his surfboard broke in half. the san francisco fire department says the surfer was hit by an aggressive wave around 11 when his surfboard broke, causing him to tumble in the surf line. fire and pole crews carried out the rescue near fort point. they say the surfer was safely brought on board a rescue boat and was not injured. a man who fell into san francisco bay over the weekend is still missing. authorities say the man and a woman fell into the water near pier 32, just south of the bay bridge, saturday night. the woman was pulled from the water and taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. firefighters and the coast guard continue looking for the man using boats, thermal imaging and drones, but suspended the search at noon yesterday. there is no word yet on how the two ended up in the water in the first place. all right. big success in san francisco is all star

exploring what nba all star weekend had to offer, and the host city really impressed nba commissioner adam silver. >> i had the opportunity since i've been commissioner to be here quite a lot. given the number of finals that the warriors have participated in. i've always enjoyedo this community, but i do sense a more energy last several days here than i've experienced in a long time. >> this was the first of three major sporting events planned for the bay area over the next year and a half. so coming up next, super bowl 60 and then the 2026 fifa world cup, the region's host committee expects these three major events to bring in more than $1.4 billion, and also create tens of thousands of jobs. san francisco leaders are proud of how the weekend went. it certainly was a lot to juggle with thousands also in the city for the chinese new year parade on saturday. mayor daniel lurie praising city employees and others for helping to make it all happen.

this weekend's events. well, nba legend, an outspoken critic of san francisco, charles barkley, is donating a quarter of $1 million to the glide foundation. barkley is giving glide in the city's tenderloin the funds to help with the homeless crisis. he was in town to cover nba all star weekend and made the announcement outside chase center. it came after barkley visited glide on friday, serving meals to the homeless and meeting with glide staff. so let's talk more about this major donation with doctor gina fromer, ceo and president of glide. thanks so much for being here. first, what was your reaction to this amazing pledge from charles barkley? >> a total surprise. a total surprise. i mean, we did what we normally do when individuals are interested in glide and learning more about our city and how glide interacts with with the community. and after he left, we had a great visit. and to see that announcement on national tv

was a bit of a surprise for us. >> yeah. so what was that conversation like? i mean, did you get a chance to explain to him a little bit about what glide does and the problems facing the city? >> yeah, we did. and you know, from who walks in our doors, the engagement that we have on a daily basis. some of our legacy programs, you know, like meals has been going on for 60 years. and who who's in that line? and i think for him, he was humbled by the fact that i think his perception was that there were, you know, one sort of person in that line when in reality, their families, their individuals, their seniors and people who just can't afford the second and third meal of the day, as well as our homeless population and people who are coming in our doors and need support. so i think he was humbled by that because he mentioned to me when we were in the kitchen, he said, this is not what i thought. yeah, you know, sometimes you're right. sometimes seeing it and feeling it andxperiencing it,

you know, gives you a different perspective of the work that we're doing every day in the community. >> yeah. it really seeing the problem and then seeing the people who are working so hard to address it, because we know that charles critical of san fr. he said it's rat infested, not a beautiful place. so were you surprised that he decided to kind of change his tune a bit and make this >> for one, i wasn't aware of those. thaty. i think that day i started hearing some. i said, don't tell me anything. we are going to treat this like we treat any, any person coming in here to learn about what we do. and again, i, i'm a sixth generation san franciscan. i don't even recall any of that being a reality of growing up where i even grew up. so, you know, i think it just needed to see it and feel it. and he came to the neighborhood that is, you know, very misrepresented in, in the, i the media sometimes and

in our communities. and so the tenderloin is a place where families, more children live in the tenderloin than any other place in san francisco. it is a community filled with art and culture. and yes, we have problems, but there are a lot of organizations like glide that are out on the front lines to change the tenderloin, because a healthy tenderloin is a healthy san francisco. and we know that and we know that. >> okay. so what what are you going to do with this $250,000? what will it allow glide to do? >> you know, when people walk navigators, we have caseve managers, and people need information on housing. and so it seems like about more of our work is about, you know, on the spot in the moment, you know, shelter. and i know the mayor is working on that now to increase the number of shelter beds. that is going to help us help other people. and so the fact that we have families every day coming in that they are going to sleep outside at night, we're working with hamilton family community. there's a lot of homelessness

into the upper 60s even low 70st now temperatures. they are mild. tonight's not. there's no freeze warnings. no freeze advisories. we did have valley fog last night. a little bit of it a little coastal fog as well. might see that again tonight. but it's not going to get that cold. it's going to get chilly but not freezing which is it's you know we're still in february here. so it's not hard to get 28, 29 degrees in a place like santa rosa. but we're not we're not seeing that. tonight's going to be with the cloud cover. it's going to stay a little bit milder. so here's the system that looks awesome. it looks like it's really got sething going on. and it does. but its trajectory is going to unload all of its moisture and snow and moisture. snow in the pacific northwest and north of us and crescent city to they're going to get a bunch of rain. and that's going to be the story. everybody north of cape mendocino from here up is going to be getting kind of on, on and off again, rainfall and heavy at times even across the city as we

university athletics, academics and faculty is gaining momentum. memphis grizzlies forward jalen well stuck around the bay area to oppose the cuts at sonoma state. fresh off his appearance at the nba all-star weekend. now, wells played basketball at sonoma state for two years. along with athletics, sonoma state is cutting several academic departments and more than 100 faculty and staff. 227 student athletes will have to transfer to new schools if they
