on ktvu fox two. >> a shocking scene on tonight.s piecing together the moments leading up to thisralta connecte down after an attempted landing. >> this is an active investigation. it's very early on. it's really important that we do not speculate. >> more than a dozen passengers taken to the hospital, but all are alive tonight and expected to recover. good evening, i'm claudine wong. >> i'm greg lee. the crash. the latest major aviation accident in north america in the past three weeks. here's what we know tonight. the flight from minneapolis to toronto people on board, 76 passengers and four crew members. the flight attempted to land at about 215 this afternoon. communication between the tower and pilots was normal on approach, but the conditions on the ground were difficult, with

snow surrounding the runway and wind gusts up to 40mph. although no cause has been determined tonight, toronto fire officials say 18 passengers were injured, including a child. ktvu south bay reporter lamonica peters joins us live now with more on the investigation. lamonica. >> greg, no other aircraft were involved in this crash, and the toronto pearson airport is now being been reopened for travel. officials didn't provide a lot of information, and they said it's just too early to know what caused this plane to flip. >> what we can say is the runway was dry crosswind conditions. >> on monday. airport officials in toronto held a press conference to give an update about the crash landing of delta flight 4819. video shows the plane landing upside down near the runway just after the crash. the cause of the crash is still unknown. the flight carried 76 passengers and four crew members, all of whom survived.

>> three of our stations in the airport operating area responded with eight aircraft. fire and rescue apparatus, plus mississauga fire and emergency services quickly responded with six engines, two district chiefs, a command vehicle and a tanker. >> chief aiken also said eight paramedic units were called to the scene. he s implemented fire suppression while people were already evacuating the plane. doctor mikayla johnson is a commercial pilot, licensed psychotherapist and host of the sky talk doc podcast. >> and i think that we're going to see a lot more playing out in terms of kind of the national conversation about the faa as well as the mental and physical wellness of the pilots. >> in the past month, there have been at least four major aviation accidents in north america, including in washington, dc, philadelphia and alaska. after monday's crash,

people posted their fears of flying on social media. johnson said it's natural for people to be leery of flying after a plane crash. >> we know it's 1 in 11,000,000 people will perish in an aircraft versus 1 in 93 in a car. so when we're looking at the statistics of it, it's definitely a far superior, safe way to travel than in the car to drop off the kids at school on the daily. >> now, doctor johnson says people should continue to make decisions about traveling via the air based on their level of comfort, like they would with any other decision. the fire chief also says that they will continue to investigate, and they'll have a final review of their rescue efforts. craig. >> remarkable scenes out of canada today. lamonica peters. thank you. as she just mentioned, today's crash is the latest in a series of major aviation accidents in north america this year. on january 29th, 67 people were killed

after an army helicopter collided with a commercial jetliner near reagan national airport. then, just two days later, seven people were killed after a medical transportation plane crashed in philadelphia. on february 6th, ten people were killed after a small commuter plane went down in alaska. in today's crash, the transportation safety board of canada is heading up the investigation. the ntsb is assisting. >> the trump administration has fired hundreds of employees at the federal aviation administration. probationary workers were notified late friday via email that they had been terminated. the impacted roles include radar landing and navigational aid maintenance. the transportation department says no air traffic controllers were affected or others who perform critical safety functions. early on, the four aviation consultant mike mcrr us what those firings could mean for aviation safety. >> just for example, at san francisco international, there is what's called instrument landing system. it's a ground

based system which is used virtually around the clock because of bad weather conditions, low visibility fog. so if those systems aren't properly maintained, you either have to restrict operations or go to some other airport. >> well, some of the employees who were fired were working on a classified early warning radar system in hawaii designed to detect incoming cruise missiles. that program is funded in part by the defense department. and a big round of layoffs is coming to southwest airlines. the airlines announced today it is laying off more than 1700 employees at its dallas headquarters. it's the first major layoffs in the company's history. that's about 15% of southwest's corporate positions. among the hundreds of employees are 11 senior leadership positions eliminated as a result of restructuring. according to southwest, the layoffs will save the company $300 million a year. >> hey hey ho hn musk

has got to go. >> new at ten protesters gathered in lafayette tonight, part of a national day of demonstrations against elon musk and doge. on this president's day, dozens of people lined the intersection of mount diablo boulevard and moraga road this afternoon, holding signs. they say they want to focus attention on what unelected leaders are doing in washington, d.c. >> especially elon musk, who is has no security clearance and he has access to our private information. >> it's outrageous what's happening to our country. i'm just sick that we are going through this coup, totally illegal coup where the president has assigned this private citizen and immigrant to destroy our country. >> the protesters carried signs saying no doge and resist. musk and president trump have defended doge, claiming that the project is identifying fraud and

government waste. protesters gathered in several spots here in the bay area to express their frustration with the trump administration. moree took to te streets in san jose. ktvu an rubin reports. >> the theme of this president's day protest no dictators. and in san jose, more than 1000 people showed up expressing their frustration with the state of the government. >> we knew trump was bad, but we didn't know elon was going to be the president. and i think that we're kind of off about that. that is, things are going in the absolute wrong direction. >> this protest was part of 5051, a grassroots movement holding 50 protests in 50 states on one day. >> it is more than president trump and elon musk ignoring the will, the people. it's also them ignoring the fundamental basis of the american way. >> similar but unrelated

protests were held in san francisco and in oakland, too, with marchers concerned about everything from immigration to women's rights to government overreach. >> the disappointment i had in the election, how my family feels about the new presidey the people that are part of the government but weren't elected to the government. >> i don't want to deal with the racism, the sexism, all this just hate that is pouring out of the white house right now shouldn't be facing towards us americans. it should be facing towards the president. >> protesters in san jose say this is just the beginning. they're hoping their voices will be heard and that this will be a call to action. >> it may also encourage them to talk to their federal representatives and say, we would like you to actually do something, and here's how we feel about it. >> i just feel like we just need more people and i don't thi anything is going to change, unfortunately. >> this rally was peaceful, but vocal protesters say they're hoping if they make enough noise, their government will

listen. in san jose, ann rubin, ktvu, fox two news. >> new at ten restaurants, hotels and nightclubs in san francisco say they are seeing a major boost following nba all-star weekend. ktvu betty yu live for us in studio to share how this event helped fuel the city's recovery. >> claudine. san francisco really showed up this weekend as a host city and put on a show for thousands of visitors. the estimated economic boost $350 million businesses, big and small, said they saw strong even record-breaking sales. >> references go. >> nba all star week brought big crowds, big dollars and big names including shaq, also known as dj diesel, to san francisco. temple sf on howard street, said it welcomed thousands more people to its nightclub over the course of four days when it came to sales. >> this was our best weekend that we've had since pre

pandemic, and it was just about five times more than we've had for the just a regular weekend. san francisco was back. this weekend was absolutely the best energy that we could have asked for. >> sister restaurants epic steak and water bar on the embarcadero were go to destinations for fans and nba stars. >> we had jayson tatum in on the saturday night before the game. charles barkley was in for a steak. we did a party for the brooklyn nets. we did one for the washington wizards. >> managing partner pete sitnik said sales were up 25% from a normal weekend. >> the revenue was great, but for me it's really more of a showcase for san francisco and for water bar and for epic steak. that just puts us on the map for more events. >> union square was bustling with visitors. taj campton place on stockton street was entirely

sold out starting midweek. normally, the hotel would be at 60 to 70% occupancy. on a typical weekend. >> the restaurant was buzzing. we had the bar, which was full and we had back to back great events. nba all-star was a great contributor to that. these events generate huge publicity for the city, puts the city in good light, puts us in the right path of recovery. >> public transit was another big winner this weekend, with muni offering free rides throughout the city. one hotel san francisco, located on the embarcadero, was fully booked and its restaurant terrain was closed for a private event. >> it was definitely needed, especially in the winter. you know, winter is not a huge tourist month. i mean, really, the city when it comes to life is amazing, and to see so many people visiting from out of town is great because ty're able to see how great san francisco truly is. >> and despite the huge crowds, the weekend passed without any major incidents. sfpd reported no significant issues, allowing the city and all of its visitors

to fully enjoy the festivities. claudine. >> it's so nice to see how happy everyone is after this weekend. and we should mention that, you know, when you talk about the bay area and the host committee that was put together, this was just the first of the things that we are looking ahead to when we host the super bowl, when the world cup comes to the bay area. and this was kind of the first test. >> it really was. and all of the hotels and restaurants i spoke to said they're actually already planning for the super bowl and all the other epic events to come. and if this weekend was any indication, they are in for several more blockbuster weekends and they're very happy about that. >> we will take them all. okay. thank you betty. well, san francisco leaders are also proud of how this weekend went. it was a lot to juggle with thousands also in the city for the chinese new year parade on saturday. mayor daniel lurie praising city officials, our city employees and others for making it all happen. >> everyone, everyon collectively worked their tails

details tonight. zach. >> i wish i. wait. >> along valencia street, opinions like the road divided. >> now i'm so happy. i think people are really going to miss it. >> the bike lane that is tuesday. the sfmta, following feedback from the community scheduled to move ahead with a makeover of the roadway, moving the current path for cyclists from the center to side running lanes. >> so i feel like when it's on the side, it's very broken up versus once you get into this thing, you're safe all the way until it ends. >> chandler abraham, a cyclist. sad to see it go. the center lane, first introduced as part of a pilot program in 2023, geared towards easing the conflict motorists. the thought was it would also maximize loading and parking for area businesses. but many owners say the opposite happened. >> it's too busy of a street. restaurants always have to have deliveries. you have to have produce coming in. you have to have other delivery companies

coming in and stuff like that. so imagine, like they can't park here. they can't. we have to block the lanes over there. so it's frustrating for everyone. >> it's an issue. some bike riders say they understand. they just wish there could have been a better compromise. >> i think that if we can come up with a plan that has delivery zones and people can make their deliveries in specific places, i think that would be very helpful. >> but for others, like incoming restauranteur kazim altan, the bike lane was a make or break issue. >> i told the previous owner and i put the condition if the bike lane is going away, then i'm going to purchase this restaurant from you. i feel so great. >> and so if you're wondering, the other concern people had was that businesses would not be able to keep their parklets. they will. sometimes these bike lanes will go around the parklets. in other cases, they will go between them and the sidewalk. so that's some good

news for these businesses. this whole project expected to take place anywhere from 2 to 3 months. back to you. >> yeah, there certainly been several iterations of this plan. zac sos live in the city for us tonight, zach. thank you. gas prices are on the rise in the bay area following a fire at the martinez refinery. triple a reports the average price of a gallon of unleaded gas is up $0.60 from a month ago to about $5 a gallon in the bay area. the statewide average is four. 84, well above the national average of $3.16. the martinez refinery accounts for about 10% of the state's refining capacity. according to triple a, the highest average price is in sonoma county at 5.25 a gallon. san francisco at $5.17. contra costa at 506. santa clara gas is around $5 a gallon, and in solano county, they have the lowest price at $4.98 on average. >> all right. checking in on the weather. we've got a pretty nice looking week ahead. although we do have this opportunity for a

light shower on wednesday. i'll show you what it looks like on the long range model right now. here we go into tomorrow. more clouds. partly cloudy, partly sunny. highs tomorrow. low 60. and then right here. this is what we're looking at in terms of the chance of showers or sprinkles for wednesday. so doesn't look like much. and it's it will have good impact north of cape mendocino. that's point arena north and up into crescent city and into portland and seattle. but for us, it's nothing really at this latitude. and we stay dry right through the early part of march. so we're looking at, you know, the first week of march before we have a shot at some rain. so we're going to dry out for a little bit, but we've got plenty of moisture. i mean, you can always use more, but in terms of fuel moisture, in terms of fire concerns, even in southern california. here's the highs from today. pretty impressive. highs tomorrow will be about the same. i'll be back. i'll do the full forecast and we'll lookay., people across the southern us are cleaning up from severe weather that slammed the region over the weekend. heavy rains

caused severe flooding in parts of the tennessee valley. in kentucky, more than a month's worth of rain fell over the state in less than 24 hours. at least 12 people have died in storms in that state, and authorities say about 1000 people had to be rescued from rising waters. and in response to the deadly flooding in kentucky, governor newsom has authorized the deployment of four incident support team members to assist in the response and recovery efforts there from the california fema urban search and rescue task force. and those teams come from oakland, sacramento and san diego. >> still ahead here at ten. tragedy for family in the south bay. >> coming up what we are learning about a teenager stabbed to death at santana row on valentine's day. >> also ahead, the leader of a cult like group linked turders . tonight, the group's ties

identifying the driver. a 51 year old man was killed at hesperian boulevard and guerrero street early february 4th, and police released these blurry photos of the suv involved. they say it was a white 2011 to 2013 lexus ct 200 with dark or black rims that may have front end damage. anyone with information is asked to call hayward police. >> we are learning more tonight about the victim of a deadly stabbing over the weekend at santana row in san jose. >> a 15 year-old was on a valentine's date with his girlfriend when, according■u to his family, he was suddenly attacked by a group of teenagers. ktvu crime reporter henry lee has the latest on the investigation. >> a confrontation at santana row in san jose ended in the deadly stabbing of 15 year old david gutierrez on valentine's day. according to his family on gofundme, david was on a date with his girlfriend when he was attacked by a group of teenagers. his family says david was beaten and stabbed in the

heart. it happened along olsen avenue at the bustling shopping district at about 715 friday night. san jose police responded to reports of a large fig befors arrived. david was taken to a hospital where he died. >> it's tragedy that we got to lose someone so young over something so small. >> david had trained with berto at gladiators boxing gym in redwood city, where he lived. >> he was a good kid. he was for sure, leader. if i tell him to leave the classroom with the class, he knew what he was doing. he paid attention even. yeah. he's just someone i could relate to. when i was young. >> at santana row on monday, there were no signs of the violence as shoppers took advantage of presidents day sales. we spotted the san jose police officers on patrol, their usual assignment during business hours. shoppers we ske to were shocked by what happened. gail and john price used to live in san jose but moved to reno a decade ago. >> it's sad. sadness, devastated how the family must feel.

>> we have an update tonight on the arrest of a person suspected of having ties to a string of killings spanning from coast to coast. 34 year-old. jack lasota was taken into custody in maryland yesterday along with 33 year-old. michelle lasota is described as the leader of a cult like group known as the ians. a bail hearing is set for tomorrow morning in maryland. court documents reveal prosecutors believe the group is linked to the murder of a u.s. border patrol agent in january in five other homicides, including the 2022 stabbing of a man in vallejo. police say curtis lind, a landlord in vallejo, was stabbed through the chest with a samurai sword. lind shot back at his attackers, killing one of them. lind was then stabbed and killed last month. 22 year-old maximilian snyder has been charged with that murder. snyder had recently applied for a marriage license with teresa youngblood, who is accused of the murder of the border agent in vermont. jack lasota and michellee

ktvu, fox two news. >> the black panther party museum in oakland has unveiled a new exhibit as part of black history month. the exhibit, survival pending revolution, highlights the party's sweeping survival programs for black people in the 60s and 70, often unseen or overlooked by media at the time. visitors will explore how the panthers fed health clinics and even offered a free ambulance service in winston-salem, north carolina. >> it was very racist in north carolina, and they would not pick up black people in their neighborhood to take them to the doctor. so the panthers, they got a hearse, they converted into an ambulance. they trained as emts, and they did 24 seven ambulance services for their community. >> the new exhibit comes on the birthday of the late huey newton, who co-founded the black panther party in 30th anniversary of the doctor huey newton foundation. his widow, fredrika newton, has fought with other panther veterans to add depth and nuance to the history

it says it's awaiting a new response from google before it sues the company over the gulf of american name change on google maps. mexican president claudia sheinbaum says she wants google to fully restore the name gulf of mexico on its maps service. she says the country is ready to file a lawsuit if the company refuses. as it stands, the gulf appears in google maps as gulf of america within the us and as gulf of mexico within mexico and gulf of mexico, with gulf of americaentheses elsewhere. >> well loved ones of a migrant who is being detained at guantanamo bay are calling for his release. activists joined jose medina's family in seattle this weekend. medina's loved ones say that's the last place they saw him. the 53 year old

migrant was seeking asylum, but was detained for six months and then deported back to his home country of venezuela. he later crossed the border to reunite with his family and was detained again. his loved ones say he's been wrongly accused of being involved in gang activity. >> treatment by ice and the us government has been horrible and unjust. jose responded. >> less than two weeks ago. medina's family was alerted that he was transferred from texas to the detention facility at guantanamo bay. and a third group of migrants landed inoverr being deported from the us. 112 migrants were on board the plane. family members say they spent tens of thousands of dollars to come through to thes, because jobs were not available. the indian government data says more than 15,000 indian nationals have been sent bac from the us, with a record number being deported during president donald trump's first term. >> the defense department is now
