a cult like group with strong bay area ties. tonight, ktvu digging deeper into decisions in the series of killings across the country linked to its members. >> were people in that community thought that the this group that they called the was becoming a cult and that they were dangerous potentially to other people. >> and we begin tonight with this cross-country investigation. good evening everyone. i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. three people who were arrested on the east coast appeared in court today, and authorities believe they could be tied to a series of killings in. are part of an extremist group that was based here in the bay area. the three suspects were arrested on sunday and appeared in a maryland court today. they are 26 year old daniel blank, who was born in berkeley and went to cal, 33 year old michelle zatko and 34 year old jack lasota. lasota lived in the bay area and is also known as the leader of the group that has been described as an extremist anarchist cult.

that group is tied to several killings, including the fatal shootings of the suspect, michelle zac sos parents. u.s. border patrol agent david masland and vallejo property owner curtis lynn. >> and it was back in 2019 when lasota landed on the radar of police after she was arrested in sonoma county at a protest. at that point, lasota, working on a blog under the name ziz, became involved with a group called the rationalists in berkeley. san francisco chronicle investigative reporter matt gaffney covered that very protest and says the group was an extreme offshoot of the rationalists. >> and so they took on an extreme veganism stance that, frankly, they kind of look at it as if we're concerned about, you know, machine intelligence becoming so great and how it would treat us when it becomes dominant. we should have the same treatment towards animals and other feeling beings in our

current state. so that is what really drove them away from the mainstream rationalists. >> lasota later lived on a boat in half moon bay along with followers, and they lived on it for a short time before moving to vallejo. once in vallejo, they met 80 year old landlord curtis linde. now this is a picture of linde in 2022, after he was attacked when he tried to evict lasota and others for not paying rent. he survived. but then last month, with the trial approaching, linde was stabbed and killed. the man arrested also has ties to the group. ktvu betty yu joins us now with the latest details surrounding the ins and its ties to the bay area. betty. >> claudine. this group is described as a circle of young, highly intelligent computer scientists. most of them are in their 20s and 30. they met online, shared anarchist beliefs, and grew increasingly violent. many members are vegan and identify as transgender.

investigators across the country are now piecing together connections in what appears to be a cult driven crime spree. trio was arrested in maryland sunday after a resident reported suspicious people parked in two box trucks and requesting to camp on private property for a month. two of them were wearing gun belts with ammunitn. the guns are linked to several deadly incidents, including a double homicide in pennsylvania, a shootout in vermont, and two knife attacks on a man in vallejo. jack lasota, a blogger and computer programmer, is believed to be the leader of the lasota once lived in berkeley. she identifies as transgender. in 2022, it's believed lasota faked her own death. an online obituary mentioned a boating accident near half moon bay, though her body was never recovered. during a coast guard search, an abandoned boat once belonging to lasota remains at pillar point harbor today.

michelle zajko was also arrested in maryland on sunday. both zajko and lasota are facing charges of trespassing, obstruction and possessing a handgun. a third suspect, daniel blank, is facing charges of trespassing and obstruction. the trio had been on the run since 2023, when investigators were searching for leads in the double homicide of zac sos parents in pennsylvania. a linkedin page that appears to be blanks listed him as a graduate of monta vista high school and uc berkeley with a degree in computer science. he recently worked as a software engineer. his last known address is in sacramento, though his parents reportedly live in the east bay. blanks father told me via text that he believes his son became a victim of a cult. he added that blank is not accused of any serious crimes. he wrote daniel used to be very gentle and sensitive, incapable of violence. the visayans are also connected to the killing of u.s. border patrol agent david malin

near the canadian border in january this year. and the 2022 stabbing of a man named curtis lynn, a landlord in vallejo. police say lynn was attempting to evict tenants, including lasota, when he was stabbed through the chest with a samurai sword and partially blinded. lynn shot back at his attackers, killing one of them. lynn was then killed in a stabbing last month. three other members of the visayans are currently in police custody in solano county. 22 year old maximilian snyder has been charged with lynn's murder, which prosecutors say was part of a plot to prevent him from testifying in court. snyder had recently applied for a marriage license with teresa youngblood, who is accused of murdering the border patrol agent in vermont. a passenger in her vehicle was also killed. uc berkeley professor louis saha, who teaches a class on cults and pop culture, shared her thoughts on the case. >> we are watching unfold a really interesting phenomenon,

which is a group that we want to call a cult, that seems to have its life primarily on the internet. as more and more people live on the internet, build communities, build deep, intense relationships, i think we're looking at a shift in how we understand social relationships. >> and lacerda's attorney has not provided further details. a judge has ordered all three suspects to be held without bail. claudine. >> all right, a story we'll continue to cover. thank you so much, betty. and this is a developing story on the fox local app. you can find updates from officials across the country surrounding the ins and its members, as well as their bay area ties. >> tonight, three of the candidates running for oakland mayor were invited to participate in the first forum to make their case for why oakland residents should vote for them in the upcoming special election. ktvu is amber lee joins us live tonight from oakland after attending the forum. >> amber. mike. the mayoral forum lasted about an hour.

organizers tell me they invited the three candidates that who filed their fundraising forms by the end of january. >> and we will hear an opening statement from each. >> the tuesday night forum featured three of the ten candidates for oakland mayor barbara lee, the longtime congresswoman. >> i have focused on local issues in terms of bringing home billions of dollars to make sure that my community benefited from my work at the national and state level. >> lauren taylor is an engineer and management consultant who previously ran for mayor. >> we need new energy, fresh perspective and a deliberate focus on making the hard but necessary choices to get us through this current period. >> was former chief of staff to recalled mayor shang tao. when tao was a city council member. webb is currently a school teacher. >> this is a little note one of my students gave, and when i hear the stories of them telling me that their car got stolen the

night before and their teddy bear was in it and they couldn't sleep last night, you see the impacts that crime has on our city. >> the questions from organizers focused largely on affordable housing. the event was put on by greenbelt alliance and east bay for everyone. about 150 people attended. the candidates spoke about the need to streamline the process, to convert existing buildings and build new housing. before the forum, i spoke with each candidate. >> what are your priorities? >> number one, oakland has to be clean. it has to be safe, and we have to be full of opportunities. that is it, the core. >> what will you bring to that office? >> i fought against the corruption of the stealing and the misuse of our tax dollars. when i was working for the recalled mayor. >> i'll be a hands on mayor. i'll bring leadership on to unify the city and really address the budget issues and really fight for residents of oakland.

>> the special election for selecting a new mayor is scheduled for april 15th. the winner will serve out the current term, which ends on january of 2027. >> mike amberleigh live tonight in oakland. amber, thank you for that. alameda county's new district attorney was officially sworn into office at the board of supervisors meeting this afternoon. the supervisor selected superior court judge ursula jones dixon after interviewing seven finalists. judge dixon says her top priority is to build a cohesive team of prosecutors. she said she is lifting limitations on how the official charges cases, including the filing of criminal enhancements. >> we're really concerned about public safety, so clearly that's an issue. that's how we got here. the da's job is to make sure, as the top law enforcement officer in the county, that we are tending to the public safety of the community. in addition to that, keeping victims at the center of that process. >> judge dixon replaces former

da pamela price, who was recalled by county voters in november. the judge will serve until the election next year, and she did add that she does plan to run for the office. >> community organizations are protesting oakland's move to cut millions of dollars in funding for programs supporting vulnerable people. the city is eliminating $2.6 million in funding for 13 community organizations that provide housing, health and other social services. the groups gathered at fruitvale transit village to criticize the city's plan. they say the city has, in some cases, abruptly stopped payments for services already provided, leaving them in dire straits. >> we are incredible messengers that have went through the training of haven for black healing, and that is funded by the city of oakland. >> we operate based on the funding that the city of oakland provides us, and it could mean that we could close our doors. >> group's losing funding include unity council, senior center tribe, which works on violence intervention, and the

sos meals on wheels program. oakland city council member noel gayo says he's going to call for the city to make a priority list of funding. >> new at ten. the recently updated clean air rules from the california air resources board are now on hold. the board announcing the state office of administrative law rejected the new standards, which were expected to raise gas prices. the air resources board says the proposed rules were just not clear enough for drivers to fully understand its effect on the price of gas here in the state. the board now has 120 days to address the issue and resubmit the standards. >> coming up, the effort to build a new music venue in the south bay, getting the green light tonight. >> and dozens of people arrested during nba all-star weekend. more on the days long crackdown in the east bay. >> and we are tracking a few rain drops out there. nothing big but something. and then it warms up just in time for the next weekend. om

today is adding another state of the art venue to its nightlife scene in the next few months. the ppe center says it will be the largest privately owned music and event center to open in what is known as san jose's sofa district in the last decade. ktvu south bay reporter lamonica peters is live for us

in san jose, inside the center with much more. lamonica. >> claudine. since the pandemic, it's been a challenge to have a thriving business throughout the bay area. but san jose business advocates say that things are looking up and they're expecting this new island themed music venue to bring more people back downtown. >> downtown san jose has emerged into a true entertainment district. we have a ton of bars, restaurants, really new concepts of lounges. >> alex satinsky is ceo of san jose downtown association and says nightlife in the area is finally getting some of its momentum back. like many other major cities, san jose struggled to get people to frequent businesses again after the pandemic. but he says now there is light at the end of the tunnel. >> so far, we have exceeded pre-pandemic numbers in downtown san jose when it comes to nightlife. on the weekends and at night, during the day, during the week, it's still a little

lagging, so we're about at 60% of what we were pre-covid. >> the ppe center is one of the new venues, hoping to bring thousands of people downtown to san jose's south first area, or sofa district. the 11,000ft!s, privately owned event space will host concerts, festivals and corporate events accommodating over 1000 guests. owner pete be says the island themed space is a tribute to his hawaiian heritage. >> the way we carry ourselves all around. it's that island vibe. you know, we plan to bring a lot of island music here, along with with the other ones. >> he says other musical genres, including latin, reggae, hip hop and country will also be welcomed, and his goal is to bring in touring artists from all over the world. as san jose preps for the super bowl and the fifa world cup games next year. he hopes the center will be a premier social destination in the south bay.

>> smash mouth got their first break from the cactus club. what we want to do is become that first break for a lot of mid-sized, mid-sized artists. >> now, the pbb center says it's planning its first venue on april 19th. its first event on april 19th. it will be outdoors and inside of this venue, and they plan to announce the entertainment for that day in the next few weeks. claudine. >> all right. exciting. looking forward to seeing that open and hosting that first event. thanks, lamonica. well, san francisco is set to kick off its fifth season of free live music. those concerts are going to be held at the golden gate bandshell starting on march 1st. more than 125 performances are planned to celebrate the bandshell 125th anniversary. the performances will feature a variety of genres, from reggae to edm, with the month of march focusing on women fronted bands in honor of women's history month. the season goes through

mid-november, with shows on most wednesdays, fridays, sundays and some saturdays. and state lawmakers will soon consider legislation to help boost nightlife and economic recovery in downtown san francisco, mayor daniel lurie and state senator scott wiener announced the legislation at union square. they say the bill would bring more bars and restaurants to the city's hospitality zones. if approved, it would provide 20 additional low cost liquor licenses for specified areas. currently, state law limits the number of licenses based on the population of a city. >> we should be making it easier, not harder, for businesses to set up here. right now, state law limits our number of liquor licenses and they are expensive and hard to get. the. this high barrier sends an error, sends the wrong message to businesses that want to come here to work with. >> right now, the cost of a state liquor license in san francisco can vary depending on the type, but generally can cost upwards of $100,000 or more.

>> oakland police say officers arrested more than 60 people over the nba all-star weekend enforcement period. the combined efforts of oakland police and the chp resulted in 44 felony arrests, with 18 cases of driving under the influence. in all, 177 traffic citations were issued. authorities also say they recovered six firearms and arrests were connected to various crimes, including homicide, armed robbery, burglary, prostitution, and vandalism. >> okay, this is pretty mild week in terms of weather. after what we've seen over the weeks, we've had some pretty powerful storms come in here. not this week. we do have a weather system, a weak one. this one comes in late tonight or early tomorrow morning and kind of meanders and does. shouldn't do much unless you're in the north bay, far north bay, up around jenner, sebastopol, 10th of an inch up there, quarter of an inch, something like that. so this is the model. this is right now. and then this is tomorrow

moments from the delta plane crash in toronto. the plane remains at the scene as investigators try to determine the cause. 80 people were on board the aircraft at the time of the crash. 21 were hurt. and as of tonight, two victims remain in the hospital. one of the passengers on board said there was no warning from the cockpit, and when the plane stopped, everyone was hanging upside down in their seats. >> i was able pretty quickly to like, so you're kind of just hanging suspended. i was pretty, me and the girl next to me were pretty. we were able to get out pretty quickly and kind of like climb. or like sort of fall down

to the ground, which was the ceiling. and then other people kind of needed some help and people were sort of falling. >> two of the five runways at the airport in toronto are still closed. the aircraft is expected to be removed from the scene within the next 48 hours. >> and tonight, we're also seeing some compelling new video, giving us a better idea of just how this plane landed upside down with its wings clipped. ktvu s tom vacar reports. >> this is the moment when a delta regional jet with 80 on board, who all survived, slammed, landed at toronto, canada's pearson airport. the now viral video was posted on x by air plus news, with hundreds of thousands of views. aviation accident attorney and pilot mary schiavo, a former inspector general of the u.s. department of transportation, which oversees the federal aviation administration, explains it this

way. >> this plane was coming extremely fast, or, as they like to say in the biz, hot. and it landed very close to the end of the runway. it came in very fast, and it just pancaked down on that runway. >> much of the fire came from the wing. >> the commercial aircraft are wet wings. that's, you know, that's where the fuel is. that's where the fuel is kept. >> many modern aircraft. >> professor michael mccormick, who teaches at embry-riddle aeronautical university in florida, says as the wing broke off the jet, which then rolled over, the wing did what it was designed to do. >> if the forces on the wings are enough to break the wing off because it's frangible, then that fuel source will actually not be a part of the fuselage. and that way you won't have the fuel in and around the fuselage and then cause additional risk to the passengers. >> in extreme circumstances. wing and tail structures are designed to separate from airliners in crashes, where the

extremely rare event of a rollover happens. >> but then you see it turn in the right wing break off in this huge explosion. so we know the wing separated at that point. the luck of the draw as to how it came out. >> it had to be a very hard hit. aircraft wings are remarkably flexible to handle the constant buffeting they encounter in flight. in this airbus test video, an airliner's wing is pulled up 17ft from its normal flying position to assure even the strongest turbulence will not separate the wing from the rest of the plane. a key question. why did the experienced pilots attempt to land in severe weather? >> some of the reports actually put the winds above this aircraft's ratings for crosswind landings. i'm predicting that they will say that this wasn't a stabilized approach, and the pilot should have broken off. don't go around. tried again.

expand access and affordability of ivf. the order calls for the domestic policy council to report back to him in 90 days. with a plan on the campaign trail. he pledged to have the cost of fertility treatments covered by the government or insurance companies. right now, few insurance plans cover ivf. it can cost upwards of $100,000. trump's stance also puts him at odds with some anti-abortion groups who oppose parts of the ivf process. >> today, a federal judge rejected an effort from 14 states, including california, to block the department of government efficiency and elon musk's access to federal data. while the federal judge said there are legitimate questions about elon musk's authority, there is not enough evidence to justify a temporary restraining order. on its website, doge claimed it has saved u.s. taxpayers $55 billion in just four weeks. it's also posting receipts from contract and lease cancellations to workforce reductions and identifying fraud. democrats are also

criticizing doge seeking access to sensitive government data, including irs and social security records. >> court will find that no, you can't just start rifling around rummaging through people's social security data. if you think there is fraud. then why did you fire all the inspector generals? >> in a court filing this week, the white house claims musk is not part of doge, only a senior advisor to the president, a technicality that could grant elon musk unfettered access to government records. well, tonight, president trump and elon musk defending doge on fox news. >> one of the biggest functions of the doge team is just making sure that the presidential executive orders are actually carried out. and this is i just want to point out, this is a very important thing, because the president is the elected representative of the people. so is representing the will of the people. and if the bureaucracy is fighting the will of the people and preventing the

president from implementing what the people want, then what we live in is a bureaucracy and not a democracy. >> so far, the heads of the social security administration and fda's food division have resigned in protest to actions from the department of government efficiency. >> louis dejoy, the embattled postmaster general, is stepping down. today, he formally asked the agency's board of directors to begin the search for a new director. dejoy has led the usps since may of 2020. his leadership has faced bipartisan criticism over mail delays, disputes over mail in ballots during the 2020 election, and efforts to save $3 billion across service operations. >> president trump instructed the department of justice to fire all remaining u.s. attorneys appointed by president biden. the doj has already fired top federal prosecutor based in san francisco, and in his first interview since losing his job, former u.s. attorney izzy ramsey spoke with ktvu political reporter greg lee about what he's proud of, what's next, and

women. >> this is a new doj. >> president trump fired ramsey last week. he joins a list of biden appointed u.s. attorneys across the nation who resigned or were let go. it is common practice for incoming presidents to drop prosecutors from the last administration. >> i left work on election evening, and i said to the parking attendant, i might get fired tonight. >> as mr. trump and his attorney general, pam bondi, clean house at the doj and look to prioritize. prosecutors have resigned, including seven after they were ordered to drop the corruption case against new york city mayor eric adams. ramsey said he didn't know the specifics of the case, but spoke broadly about the job of these prosecutors. >> people with high integrity who have been in these positions for years across administrations, who approach it with what they say, prosecuting without fear or favor. i hope that, you know, whatever political happenings in washington will not deter people

from from that mission. it's important for our country, public safety, you know, democracy. >> the president and attorney general brushed off questions about the fallout. >> so when you say resign, they're going to be gone anyway. but i know nothing about the individual case. i know that they didn't feel it was much of a case. >> we have a right to protect the weaponization of against weaponization in new york and every state in this country, and also national security. >> there has been sort of this rhetoric around the doj in the last couple of years that doj was being, quote, weaponized to seek out political opponents. >> there's not a single u.s. attorney i've worked with or i talked to in the entire time of my two years who, you know, approached this as a way to weaponize criminal justice system and to use the seat to try to advance the objectives of a particular party on a partizan way. >> ramsey said he's still

figuring out what he'll do next, but is confident in the men and women at the u.s. attorney's office in san francisco. leaving them with this message. >> i'd say stay focused on the work and the mission. you're there for public safety and defending the constitution. >> greg lee, ktvu, fox two news. >> well, new york governor kathy hochul met with key leaders today as calls escalate for her to remove embattled mayor eric adams. the governor met with reverend al sharpton, who was an ally of the mayor, but says he's worried that adams is allying with the trump administration. adams is accused of making a deal with the justice department to drop his criminal case in exchange for helping the administration enforce its immigration policies. adam denies that ever happened. this week, four deputy mayors resigned. city comptroller brad lander, who is running for mayor, saying the controversy is pulling the focus away from what matters. >> cannot have the leadership vacuum that is consuming city

i'm not happy with the way that pg&e handled the wildfires. yeah. yeah. i totally, totally understand. we're adding a ton of sensors. as soon as something comes in contact with the power line, it'll turn off so that there's not a risk that it's gonna fall to the ground and start a fire. okay. and i want you to be able to feel the improvements. we've been able to reduce wildfire risk from our equipment by over 90%.

[skateboard sounds] and this is the first night of a two night full closure of highway 101, in santa rosa for the overpass replacement project work. now tha closure is happening at hearn avenue. it starts at 11 tonight. all lanes are going to be closed in both directions. they're going to stay closed until 5 a.m, and then that closure is going to peat tomorrow night. caltrans is raising the height of the overcrossing and widening it to two lanes in both directions. and one person was sent to the hospital today after a multicar crash in san jose. this all happened about 130 this afternoon on almaden expressway. police have not shared exactly how many cars were involved, but chopper footage shows two cars on the side of the road. the

white one, as you can see there, wrecked its front and back bumpers, and there was debris scattered across that area. police say a person suffered life threatening injuries and remains in critical condition but is stable. no word yet on what caused that crash. >> tonight, a concord neighborhood in shock after a domestic dispute turned violent. police say they shot and killed a man who was stabbing his own father. ktvu crime reporter henry lee has more tonight. after speaking with neighbors. >> i was woken up because i heard, like, pow, pow. >> juanita ataide heard loud noises and police cars rushing to a home two doors down on concord. she later learned from neighbors that concord police had shot and killed a man as he was stabbing his father. >> it's absolutely horrible. i would have never thought that to go here. i don't know what was going on with the house or the family, but it's horrible. >> it happened at a home on natoma drive off willow pass road at about 140 tuesday morning. a woman called 911 saying a father and son were

struggling over a knife in the living room, and that she was hiding in the garage. within a minute of arriving, police say they found the 47 year old man actively stabbing his father. at least one officer opened fire. the son died at the scene. the father, who is 73 years old, was taken to john muir medical center in walnut creek and is expected to survive. >> i can't imagine going through what they're going through right now. i just i think they need their peace right now. >> this neighbor, who didn't want his face shown became emotional, saying the family involved had lived there for decades and that he had seen the suspect and his brother growing up. >> i want him to know that we're thinking about him. thoughts and prayers for the family and for. >> much of the day. concord police were joined at the home by the contra costa sheriff's crime lab. they diagramed the scene and collected evidence. another neighbor who didn't want his face shown said the man who was killed had apparently been suffering from mental health issues. >> my reaction, of course, is shock, horror, sadness, compassion for the family. >> residents still struggling to come to terms with the violence involving a family they've seen

expected to be removed, though within the next couple of days. 80 people were on board the plane at the time of the crash. 21 were hurt. tonight, two victims remain in the hospital alameda county's new district attorney officially taking office after being sworn in at the board of supervisors meeting this afternoon. superior court judge ursula jones dixon fills the seat of former da pamela price, who was recalled by county voters in november. the judge will serve until the next election in 2026, and she says that she does plan to run for the office, and a forum was held to meet the candidates in the upcoming special mayoral election for the city of oakland. ten people have qualified for the ballot tonight. three of those candidates were invited to participate in the first forum. former congresswoman barbara lee, former oakland council member lauren taylor, and renee webb, a former city staffer in elementary school educator. this forum served as a way for these candidates to make their case for the city's mayor. ktvu is
