children? and after talking to kevin, it sounds like you know a lot about their dynamic and their relationship. >> the criminal physical stuff happened after jodi came into the picture. >> kevin says jodi and ruby forced him to move out and cut off contact with his kids, including eldest son chad. >> i was also required to move out of the house and never contact my siblings. you know, never, never go back home. >> she gets her hooks into you and slowly begins to indoctrinate you and condition you to believe that you yourself aren't capable of making good decisions. >> jodi pleaded guilty to four counts of child abuse. she and ruby are currently serving sentences in utah up to 30 years each. ex-husband kevin, now left to deal with the emotional fallout. >> i'm not ashamed to say that,

>> her vibrant personality and stunning looks were also a magnet for male attention. one man in particular, ramón andrés castillo, who worked in a neighborhood deli. >> i was like, hey, i'm going to tell her that you've been asking about her and i'll see what she says. >> i found him interesting and i went out on a date. >> and it seemed like a match. >> he was very nice. he made us feel very comfortable. >> but before long, the perfect union started showing some cracks. >> it was relationships, problems that escalated with the time. >> joanna remembers a night she was out with eva, marie and ramon. at the end of the night. joanna says ramon became enraged when he wasn't invited in. >> he grabbed her by her hair, pulled her back into the car. so when he did that, i was like, no. i remember one day she came to my house and he literally

left his car parked, double parked outside in the middle of the street for like 30 minutes and went upstairs and tried to carry her out of my house. she really wanted to see the good in him. so she was like, you know, we were drinking. i don't think this is going to happen again. >> if eva miro wasn't able to see ramon's need for control and domination, she was about to get a rude and violent awakening. >> the relationship took a turn when we took a trip to florida. >> it was eva meyers birthday and she wanted to celebrate in miami beach. >> it was a girls trip. it was my birthday. my friends didn't want any males around. it wasn't, you know, it was just for us to be comfortable. >> ramon would have none of that. he insisted on crashing the party. the first night when we went out was the first big problem where i just realized who he was. we went out, we was clubbing, and everything was fine. and all of a sudden he says, let's go upstairs in front

of everybody. my response to him was, well, if you want to go ahead, go ahead, i'll meet you upstairs. but i'm not leaving now. >> ramon went to the room alone and angry. when eva meyer returned later, she would pay a brutal price. >> we heard the screaming from her and we went to go. i went to go and check what was going on, and he was beating her. he punched me. >> he threw me down. hit me. my friends was outside in the hallway just yelling, you know, let her out, let her out, let her out until they. finally i got to open the door and i came out. he stood in the room and he was just saying he was going to kill himself, to not call the cops. he was going to throw himself off the balcony. >> hotel management called nine 1-1 and within minutes ramon was in cuffs and arrested. it was a moment of reckoning for eva and her friends. >> we were like, leave him there. that's it. like this is your moment to break up with him. >> but eva meyer was still

reluctant to cut ties. a common characteristic for victims of abuse is self-blame. >> i think in some kind of way, she thought maybe she triggered that. >> thankfully, eva meyer eventually would see the light and know exactly what she had to do. coming up, eva meyer calls it quits with ramon. but she has no idea his obsession with her will nearly cost her her life. >> if the. >> gun would never would have never jammed on the third strike, that would have been the bullet that killed me. >> how she survived being shot in the head. that's next. >> here's a somebody i'm longing to see. i hope that she turns out to be. someone who. o's me.

new nightmare for eva meyer. after the violent hotel room assault on girlfriend eva meyer clark, ramon castillo makes bail in florida and heads back to new york. eva meyer suggests they press pause on their relationship. >> my excuse to him was, we need our space in order for this to work. >> eva meyer wasn't won over and wants him out. just before christmas, she leaves him the keys to her apartment so he can take his things out. >> but he wouldn't destroy the whole apartment. like everything was just broken glass and broken mirrors. >> he glued her door to the apartment. >> call the cops. made a report. he actually ended up paying for everything that he broke. and that was the end of that. he actually left my house for good. >> in fact, ramon seemed to simply fly off the radar completely. >> he was getting his cab driving license, so i'm like, hey, maybe, you know, he needs to get his life together.

>> hardly. ramon was just taking a break. >> he will break my lights of my car because he thought that she was using my car to go out. >> on a frigid january night in new york. eva meyer's shift was almost over at the pharmacy where she worked in manhattan. her coworker, demetrius johnson, makes a chilling observation. >> demetrius comes back and he's like, your ex is parked outside the store. are you waiting for him right now? i was just like, i don't know what to expect. i haven't spoken to him. i guess i was scared, but i didn't want to show him that i was scared. so i'm like, you know what, demetrius? just give me a second so we can both walk to the train together. he was actually taking the same train as me. we walk outside. he's nowhere to be seen. there's no cars. it's below zero and we have, like, a good six blocks to walk. >> eva meyer tries to stay calm. suddenly, what she sees is no illusion. >> i look back and he was like,

rushing like speed, walking towards me and his hat was down. he had a big coat, but his hand was inside his pocket. so i looked back and i'm like, dimitri? i said, let's just, you know, i started speed walking like i ran. demetrius grabs him to stop him and he was not trying to hit demetrius back or trying to. he was his. his goal was me. i threw myself on the floor and i grabbed myself like this. he's grabbing me by my hair, trying to pull me up, but it's not possible. demetrius is actually forcing him and hitting him. let her go. let her go. all i feel is my head going to side to side. >> eva miro doesn't even realize what's happened to her. >> all i know is i feel this really cold. and when i actually touched, it was a lot of blood behind my head. >> in an act of vengeance, ramon castillo pulled out a handgun and fired at avamere, hitting her once in the arm and once in

the head. the second bullet grazed her finger and lodging inches above her right ear, but she, still conscious. ramon is determined to complete the job, but when the gun jammed, he turned and ran. >> i feel like if the gun would never would have never jammed on the third strike. that would have been the bullet that killed me. >> eva meyer's story of survival is nothing short of miraculous. doctors said the bullet lodged in her head was just one centimeter away from killing her. eva meyer believes she owes her life to her friend demetrius, who valiantly tried to fight off ramon. >> he didn't get that perfect shot because they just kept moving him. >> ramon was in police custody within minutes in his car. cops find a suicide note. >> i feel like he realized he messed up. i wasn't going to give him another chance shooting me. maybe it was his idea of she

won't be mine. she won't be nobody else's. >> and even after ramon was arrested and charged, eva meyer received another love letter begging forgiveness. >> everything i did was because i love you. >> ramon castillo was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to 15 years. but that's little comfort to anyone. >> i feel like he's going to try to find me. he's going to try to find her. one of us. like, i feel like he's going to come back for one of us. it is scary. >> like eva meir, millions of women get caught in the tangled web of abuse. those who say just walk away don't understand the dynamics of domestic violence. but through her story, eva meyer and her friends hope to offer encouragement to others locked in the same living hell. >> don't think you can fight it off. don't think you could win it off. speak to someone. don't be ashamed. get the help that you need and try to get out of it alive.
