set up by her family, she was dropped off at a hospital overnight from an unknown man. we're waiting to hear what happened from delta police. delta police are looking for a driver involved in a hit- and-run crash this morning. they say two cars were involved off i-25 and 225. one was merging and the other crossed the double line and hit the other car. one person was ejected from the car hit and has life- threatening injuries. the driver of the car that illegally tried to merge left, left the scene on foot. >> we have some things to work with, but we're obviously looking for information. and if the party involved in the accident comes forward, it would obviously assist with the investigation. >> reporter: if you have any information on who was driving the car. perhaps if you witnessed the crash, you'red you're asked to call denver police. cdot is expecting a lot of mountain traffic this weekend! you may heard of the warning on heavy eastbound congestion saturday and sunday afternoon and in the evening hours.

[ laughter ] >> so if you can get out of town right now, maybe say we'll call it a day early, may be a good idea. one hour delays or longer are expected this weekend. this weekend will be the biggest test so far for that new i-70 toll lane. cdot says 400 cars used the lane last saturday. 800 on sunday. tolls have stayed at about 3 to $4 so far. depending on the traffic, though, they can go as high as 30. >> yeah, and they may hit the threshold this weekend because we'll have noticeably warmer weather over the next few days. with that comes poor air an advisory was in effect today. it just lifted. weather center. this may be the week we break out of the cold! maybe! we've been stuck in the midst look at this. as far as the deep freeze goes, it's been since christmas eve

mark. and today we cracked that. a warm one for most of eastern colorado as temperatures are a good 10 to, in some spots, 17 degrees warmer than where we were at 4:00 p.m. yesterday. right now at 32 out of the airport. mid-to upper 30s across the eastern plains. 11 in buena vista. 6 below in gunnison and same in kremmling. those mountain valleys are struggling to get out of the deep freeze. we have some blue skies sitting over the area. but like you mentioned, we're still monitoring the air quality. right now, it's improved a bit since this morning and now moderate visibility. moderate as well those burning restrictions have been lifted. on hd doppler 9, it's been dry. statewide, we need winds out here to scatter out that cloud. through the evening, overnight, and in the morning, not a lot is going to change. we'll just have that sunshine out there and clear skies overnight. temperatures will be cooling. we'll be back to the 20s by 6:00, 7:00.

there's an investigation going on into a fire at a strip club this morning at the east of colfax. crews say the fire started on the left corner of the building. no one was inside at the time. belgium authorities have released three people after questioning them about a suspected plot to carry out extremist attacks in brussels over the holidays. they were among six people taken in for questioning yesterday about a plot suspected of targeting police, soldiers in popular locations. the other three were released yesterday. two other people, including the suspected leader, have been arrested and the judge has another month. train stations in munich, germany, were on hold today. there was, quote, a serious state bombers. they had serious information, they said, yesterday of an attack planned. they say they were tipped off by a foreign intelligence service the islamic state was

no arrests have been made. they're telling residents to be cautious but continue their lives as normal. big cities around the world were on a heightened alert for new year's eve following threats in europe and the november attacks in paris. crews in dubai have been working hard to help with a fire that started yesterday. 14 minor injuries were reported as a result of the evacuation. crews said some small fires were still burning in the building this morning and afternoon. authorities say they're still working to determine the cause. grammy award winning singer natalie coal has died at the sage of 65. she's the daughter of the legendary singer nat king coal. her publicist said she passed away yesterday. she battled hepatitis c and

her beloved sister and mother will be greatly missed and remain unforgettable in our hearts forever. of course, that referring to the hip song "unforgettable," first made famous by her father. president obama sat today with loretta lynch monday to come up with ways to make it more difficult for a, quote, dangerous few to get access to firearms. no specifics yet on what measures to be taken. but he directed white house staff to look into potential executive actions, like extended background checks. licensed firearm dealers have to do background checks on purchasers. but there's no requirement for those sell at gun shows. gun shows are not federally licensed. a source familiar with the efforts told the associated press actions the president could take may include setting a reasonable threshold for when sellers have to seek a background check.

past the record of 1993. and 29-year-old craig strickland is the lead singer of the arkansas based country rock band, sack road anthem. he disappeared on a duck hunting trip with a friend a week ago. their boat was found capsized and their dog. the friend's body was discovered in a lake. since 1983, there's been a called the polar plunge. but this year, the event was canceled after a change in who is running the event. that didn't stop jimmy shelstad from showing up at the reservoir anyway. he's jumped in the fridged water for the past 7 years. she brought her kids to see what her tradition has been about until 2016. >> it's like the best feeling ever. i can't explain it. i love adrenaline rushes.

[ baby cooing ] >> and also worrying about mom and worrying about our second daughter in the backseat the whole time, making sure that, you know, she's okay and making sure that mom's okay. >> i think it's so exciting. i think it's kind of a dream come true for a paramedic to get to deliver his own baby. the circumstances weren't ideal.

estimates for the average price of gas this year are between 2 1/4 to $2.45 per gallon. something to keep in mind, aaa is warning drivers we could see a jump in prices about 50 cents a gallon next month because that's when refinery maintenance begins and at that time of year, the price sneaks up a little bit. a new year means a new bus service for the front range. you'll notice buses called flatiron flyers along 436. the new transit service will have six routes. how much you pay depends on where you start. but one-way fares range from $2.60 to $4.50. rtv ambassadors will be at the stations this coming week help riders -- to help navigators. if you or your children

it's time to fill out your applications for federal student aid or fafsa. it allows you to get federal grants, as well as scholarships and helps students determine how much they can borrow on federal loans. applications must be submitted june the 30th. experts say the sooner you do it, the better. one of denver's oldest video stores is struggling to stay open. now they're asking for the public's help to keep the doors open. he says his customers have been dwindling the last two years to. fix that, he's launched a crowd- funded website to make his story a nonprofit video archive. he says he's made very little money opening the store, but the reward would be being apart of the community and that's what he says he wants to keep going.

[ laughter ] >> that makes sense! makes you think of different things! another one is healthy living. we asked dr. john torres for ways to lower our colest control levels as part of -- cholesterol levels as part of a healthy year. 31% of adults have high cholesterol. and fewer than one out of every three with high cholesterol has it under control. dr. john torres says there's no magic bullet to get rid of it. but there are some things you can do to lower it. >> exercise on a regular basis. that goes without saying. the more you can do it, the better. even if it's ten minutes of walking during your break, that can do wonders for your health and cholesterol, in particular. make sure you do it regularly. the other is to make sure you're eating healthy fats. get rid of the saturated fats as best you can and trans fats in particular. you want to make sure those are

[ laughter ] >> fridged out here. teens over the holidays and new year. a new weather pattern is taking hold which means a little more sunshine around here and the quote, unquote, heat as well. nice to see some of the blue skies overlooking the mountains. up there towards steamboat springs after an impressive, and i do mean impressive, december, where many of the ski resorts saw feet beyond feet of fresh powder. epic skiboarding conditions across the state. still plenty of snow out there. but a gorgeous view nonetheless. and downtown denver just illuminated in sunlight as well. as we finished up the month of december, look at this. temperatures, the average of 29.4 degrees. that's just a degree or so below where we should be for that time of the year.

they're kind of adorable, aren't they really? more than 116 dachshunds spent their new year's eve on parade in key west, florida. and it was certainly warm for them! >> yeah, they're the weanny dogs everyone knows and loves. they were with their owners. hundreds of spectators admired their costumes. they joined other breeds in a -- >> the weeneymobile! >> who put this on me! who put that on me? >> would walter do that? >> no, no, no. walter is not a fan of costumes! >> he's not? >> sweaters, booties. >> because he's so handsome without out. why would you need it? >> you can't add to perfection

>> i hope he's watching! >> i hope he's hearing all these compliments! oh, man! it was pretty hot down there as you saw a lot of folks in their short sleeves. not the case around here as we've been stuck in the deep freeze. it's been nothing but hats, gloves, big puffy jackets and big winter boots. towards this weekend, though, temperatures should warm up. across the region, welcoming the new year, live look in fort collins. looks awfully quiet. the blue skies look mighty fine, too. and up at the arapahoe basin, people boarding. i think it'll be popping in the high country as so many people have the weekend off. and the snow has been incredible. looking ahead toward january as far as our climate prediction center goes, what they're thinking as far as temperatures are concerned. looks like the pacific northwest, the midwest, and parts of new england have a good shot of seeing above average temperatures. these cooler temperatures possible in southwestern colorado. and then that stretches all the way throughout the texas area

too. and then precips, again, it's that jet stream that has so much moisture with it. and that's typical of an el nino winter as that brings more moisture to the southern tier of the country. below average precip into montana and dakotas and around the great lakes, too. and tomorrow we'll be warming up a bit. especially compared to today. 5, 10 degrees warmer than what we were. 33 in the metro area. even the high country will not only be enjoying the bluebird skies but not quite as biting when you're out there. 45 on sunday. great broncos weather. and then look at this! we'll stay kind of flirting with near 50 degrees on tuesday. guys will bring back a few snow flurries on thursday, friday, and even into maybe next weekend! >> a bute! eyewitness news at 5:00 is coming up next!
