12:00 pm
this is 9news. hi, everybody. i'm kyle dyer here with tarhonda thomas. thank you for joining us. the big news across the world today -- [ no audio ] >> the white house just announced that initial analysis is inconsistent with north koreaian claims of a successful hydrogen bomb test. we have an expert in the studio, joining us shortly to talk about the claims that are coming from the north. first the latest el nio storm is hitting california pretty hard. here's a look at snow in donner pass, and in san francisco the snow caused car crashes, toppled trees and flooded streets. let's check in with danielle, because right now we are dry, still kind of warm but that's all about to change tonight, right? that's moving in?
12:01 pm
tomorrow, we will be looking at a completely different picture when you wake up, little bit of snow around here, so soak in the sunshine, soak in the blue skies while we have them day. no coats needed out here but, change. i will show you the storm systems pressing in, you can see it's been one after the next, almost a parade of storms marching in through much of the west, truly affecting most of california from the north all the way to the south. some wetting rains as well as some serious snow across the syria and -- sierra an area that loves to see some of this, especially considering their drought conditions. right now around colorado a little bit of that moisture is lifting in from the southwest, starting to move into the san juans and right along i-70 toward grand junction, it still is beautiful around the city, however, we are going to have a few more clouds out here than what we had the past couple of days and can you see it? a little bit of a brown cloud just kind of hanging tight to the surface. you can see it on the left-hand side of your screen there. with that being said, air
12:02 pm
we do have a few wood burning restrictions out there as well. i'm hoping that once this storm system moves in, that should help us out, mix-up the air a bit and help clear it out as well. temps right now at 43 in denver, 40s off to the eastern plains, 27 in leadville and buena vista, the rest of the evening around the mart area, you will -- metro area, you will notice a few more clouds. one more dry day ahead of us and the snow returns tomorrow. how much will we see around the metro area and what about the high country? we are talking about big time numbers out there, plus a kind of chilling looking -- chilly looking weekend compared to last weekend when we were soaking in all the sun. >> it's time for the cold to return. >> it's time. >> thank you. well, we are learning disturbing details about this teen's alleged plot to attack people at her own school. she has now been charged as an 16-year-old siema johnson made her first court appearance yesterday. johnson and another 16-year-old girl were arrested in december
12:03 pm
prosecutors say johnson practiced target shooting with a bb gun and compiled detailed maps of the school. they say she showed no remorse after her arrest and even told investigators she had planned the attack again -- she would plan the attack again if they were released. she is being held on $1 million bail. charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit first- degree murder. authorities haven't decided whether to charge that second suspect as an adult. they are waiting on results of her mental health evaluation. what started as a shooting ended in a chase and three people in handcuffs this morning. denver police say it started when the person called 911 to report they were being followed by a truck. shortly after that, someone inside the truck reportedly shot at the caller. the driver wasn't hurt. the colorado state patrol helped denver police and together they tracked down the suspect's truck. that's when a chase began. it ended at 34th and cuevas in highlands. three suspects taken into custody. chipotle now the center of a criminal investigation. the restaurant has been served
12:04 pm
subpoena. it's tied to a norovirus outbreak that happened this summer. the food and drug involved. the denver based company has been reeling since an e. coli restaurants. it was followed by a separate norovirus outbreak in boston. with all of this going on, chipotle expects its fourth quarter sales to drop by about 15%. back to north korea's claims to having detonated a hydrogen bomb today. the country has tested atomic bombs before but not a hydrogen bomb which is 100 times more powerful than an atomic bomb and when the announcement was made, people were cheering. dr. robert hazan is a political science professor and came in today to talk about this. there are still a lot of questions, a lot of doubts that this truly was a hydrogen bomb as north korea claims? >> that's correct and i think
12:05 pm
scientists and people who have been monitoring with organizations that monitor nuclear tests, the likelihood that this was a hydrogen bomb is really withering away and also the seize mick shot that was -- seismic shot that was recorded of magnitude 5.1 indicates it probably wasn't. >> because if it were hydrogen -- >> far more tremor would have been experienced in south korea, in china, in japan. >> okay. the world is pretty much, you know, condemned this. >> the world has condemned it because this is scary, this is a very dangerous commitment on the part of the north korean government to develop rapidly nuclear arsenal, their nuclear weapons program and even if this is not a hydrogen bomb, it definitely somehow proves that north korea is determined to really develop it eventually so
12:06 pm
deliberations today and a few days ahead. china, japan, south korea, nato, european union, united nations security council and, you know, we want to stop this because we want to have a nonproliferation of dangerous weapons of mass destruction but in particular nuclear weapons. >> for north korea to do this, they want to be noticed and respected. now, the u.n. security council as you mentioned has already met. no word yet in terms of sanctions. i would guess that would be coming? would that be something that would get their attention and they would stop? >> yes. sanctions will definitely get their attention but i think that diplomacy is going to be the most important element right now, negotiations, if possible with the north korean regime so this really doesn't reach even further dangerous proportions. >> what happens next? are we all waiting for the u.n. security council to make a decision? everyone is just saying oh, this is so bad they did this.
12:07 pm
thing. what happens now? >> i think that definitely united states may tell russia, china, of course south korea are going to be engaged in deliberations and there will be a lot of dim mack missions -- diplomatic missions. >> south korea must be on edge today? >> absolutely. the south korean defense ministry and the south korean foreign affairs minute tree are meetings. this is such a dangerous situation for all the neighbors of north korea. >> absolutely. thank you for coming in today. >> thank you. >> very much. hundreds of american troops are receiving medals of honor. the pentagon may order the military to review more than 1100 medals issued since 9/11. it is the country's highest award issued for valor and combat. if approved, the sweeping review would represent one of the most significant steps in decades to honor troops. if even a fraction of the medals under review are upgraded it's possible that dozens more troops will receive

in iraq and afghanistan. well, congratulations to broncos running back ronnie hillman. he's been named afc offensive player of the week. hillman had a strong performance in sunday's win over san diego. he rushed for a career high of 117 yards. he also scored the game winning touchdown so everybody is so excited. it helped the broncos clinch their fifth consecutive division title. not the first time this has happened, though. this was the sixth afc player of the week honor for the broncos this season. a lot of good players. >> such an exciting part of the game. awesome. >> gives you chills. >> uh-huh. would you more likely to tweet if you had more space to say what you wanted to say? >> i don't know. >> like sometimes i'm like, 140 characters, that's it? >> it's hard. >> eliminate some grammar rules there. twitter's ceo says the company is considering allowing as many as 10,000 characters. would you read all that? >> i don't know. i like twitter because it's concise. >> yeah, it's short. >> yeah.
12:09 pm
current limit on direct messages so they are using it already. the ceo said that the character limit started years ago to fit in sms messages but now they can fit more. >> is it a done deal on twitter or just thinking about it? >> no. thinking about it. if we have any input, i'm going to say thumbs down, i want to keep it short. >> keep it different. >> right. so caffeine, your overheadlight, your tablets, all those can affect your sleep bed. according to a new study, your gender, yes, being a woman, you're doomed in getting sleep for your entire life apparently. sleep better? >> what? >> cash, $450 million.
12:10 pm
welcome back, everyone. meteorologist danielle grant here in the 9news back yard. bright blue skies out there, temperatures sitting in the 30s, low 40s, soak it in while you can because we have a few changes, finally another storm on the brink. it will be moving in overnight and we will be waking up to a white winter wonder land yet again. we are looking downtown, while we have the blue above, still a little bit of a brown cloud closer to the surface, pollutants out there, we need mixing to go on, we need gustier winds to come through and i think with this storm system that will certainly help us out and produce better air quality for everyone. look at that, 50 degrees on the nose, downtown denver looking
12:11 pm
boulder, low 40s in broomfield as well, 49 in aurora, still in the 30s in black hawk as well as idaho springs. out at the airport 43 with the wind chill coming at us at 39. this afternoon we will stay in the 40s, 45 out at the airport colorado, pretty comfortable and a lot of folks above the freezing mark once you move out further west. right now still monitoring a couple of storm systems moving in, one positioned down here toward the four corners, that scoops up in the colorado overnight and then this next one, up to bat, it is already plowing into california bringing them some widespread rainfall along the coastline, the potential for seeing some mudslides and also some big time snowfall out there in the sierra. around here, a little bit of light snow along i-70, just to the south, closer towards telluride, here's the view downtown durango, a little bit of light snow and you can see certainly not a ton in the far off distance as they are socked in with clouds. winter weather advisories as well as warnings, those will
12:12 pm
areas below 6500, about three to 6 inches and then an advisory in place also, so in durango, four to eight, grand total six to 12, across wolf creek pass, three to six for pagosa springs and above 5500 feet out there. most of the moisture stays west overnight into tomorrow morning, 6:00, 7:00 it is just nudging into the i-25 corridor, lift further up to the north by the afternoon, 4:00, 5:00 we could have steady and heavy bands across the northeastern plains where it sits throughout the evening. things wind down across the san juans tomorrow night as we get ready for round two. that pulls in on friday as well as a cold front, that's going to cool us off and possibly bring us even more snow which i actually think is going to stick to the ground tomorrow we 30s. teens and 20s overnight. again here in denver we will have the clouds, have a little bit of snow developing and then we will stay at 36 for tomorrow, so i think some of that snow that arrives early in the morning is going to be slushy, wet, messy out there

12:15 pm
things unfair for us woman. >> this is unfair that we put dr. john on the spot. >> he joins us to talk about what does gender have to do with it? >> it actually has a lot to do with sleep quality and that's probably the most important thing. we are talking about whether you can get to sleep on time and how much sleep you actually get and this is actually done on a study where they analyzed 44,000 u.s. adults here, talked to them about their sleep habits and looked at between 2013 and 2014 and the important thing is didn't only look at the amount of sleep but also looks at the quality of sleep and overall they found out that women are having a hard time getting to sleep, staying asleep and getting enough hours of sleep. that's kind of the trifecta of sleep that -- that we want them to get. not getting seven hours of sleep, seven to nine hours, that's the magic window that we want people to get sleep because that's what keeps us healthy. single parent women, only 43% of the women reported not getting enough sleep so a woman who is a single parent. that's no big surprise.
12:16 pm
>> yes. but that's compared to 31% who were double parent families that the women weren't getting it. for the men, again single parent woman, 43%, single parent men 47%. single parent men were able to get more sleep even though they were taking care of the children as well and it goes on and on when they are talking about not being rested. women overall whether they are a single parent person or childless overall got less sleep than men did. >> my brain is always going, going, going. >> we always have stuff going on. but hormones obviously play into this. >> they can't exactly pinpoint what's going on but the two things they think are causing issues are number 1 pregnancy and number 2, menopause. pregnancy happens at one end of the life spectrum, 20s and 30s,men pause at the other end, 40s, 50s, 60s, so they are book ended by these two things that can cause them to not have enough sleep and that's pretty
12:17 pm
>> oh, man. so discouraging. i'm in the middle where my children are not babies anymore but you hear every little thing they do, who is that? what are they doing. >> when they are teenagers we are waiting for them to come home, are they home yet? >> and meanwhile, my husband has slept through coyotes howling in the front yard, really. >> and the next morning, did you hear that? hear what. >> they got to play it off. oh, yes, i heard it. i looked out the window to make sure everything is okay. >> well, thanks, dr. john. thanks for the news.

officials with the multistate lottery association raised that jackpot estimate from 450 million to 500 so the jackpot ranks at the sixth largest ever offered in north america. the winner of the jackpot could claim a single pretax payout of $306 million. as you can imagine, people are lining up at stores all across the nation in hopes of buying the winning ticket. but they won't get it because i'm going to get it. >> and, remember, you see those dollar bills when you buy a lottery ticket, you have to pay in cash. >> cash. i didn't know that. >> no credit cards. >> i tried to buy my first lottery ticket last time it hit 400 million, didn't realize that. so this will be my first one. >> go to the atm first. the consumer electronics show in las vegas is open for business. today is the first day it really technically opened. >> so much cool stuff, including virtual reality. that technology is really headed for a breakout year.
12:20 pm
facebook's oculus are both launching highly anticipated vr headsets. over the holiday a samsung gear device sold out. netflix, hulu and directv have all launched new virtual reality apps. studios are placing big bets on this too. fox unveiled its adventure, the martian experience and the sci- fi channel says it is launching a new lab to create this technology. >> and then it will start growing and growing. you wouldn't dream of watching tv today without an hdtv. >> that means big business. vr is virtual reality and then there's augmented reality that's projected to generate $150 billion in revenue by 2020. >> is it wrong that i still have a tube tv? i'm not even ready for this. >> you just got rid of your flip phone. you have to speed it up. >> a year and a half ago.
12:21 pm
so we are anxiously anticipating these flakes, will they be falling when we wake up in the morning? >> i think so, yeah, around here i think the morning drive might be a little iffy, but it's going to be that wet, sloppy snow around here. you can see as far as the year goes, 11.3 inches in november and december. we are waiting for some in january and tomorrow through saturday, potentially two to five around i-25 corridor. >> whoa, goodness. all right. be ready. >> i'm going to be -- >> triple jinx. take care, everybody.
