southern mountains where winter weather advisories are posted. california is posting for more rainfall and snow in the sierra nevada mountain range. the most recent range is moving quickly northeast. it is unorganized. denver will see a little light snow overnight for the morning drive tomorrow. about an inch of snow in the afternoon. it's the sec strongest wave off to the west of us that will prompt the national weather service to really increase the winter weather advisory up to a winter storm watch for the it is creeping closer to colorado springs and pueblo. heavy snow forecast for the south western mountains under a winter snow warning. denver, no advisories posted yet. but with aware when you wake up the snow may be falling. light snow. be colder. temperature ins the morning will range from the low to mid 20s with light snow developing between 5:00 and 8:00 a.m. expect scattered snow showers off and on throughout the day. we get a break and the second

reported overnight is not consistent with their claims of a successful hydrogen bomb. >> a senior u.s. military official told nbc news that it was aware north korea was preparing for some kind of test for two weeks. drones were even sent to collect air samples from near the test site. it is not clear exactly what was detonated. police in longmont are searching for a kidnapped teenager and they think that her abductor might be trying to take her to missouri. the suspect, 51-year-old thomas fetchler is also known as thomas kitchen. he is wanted for sexual assault on a child or kidnapping. she may have gone with him willingly. the 16-year-old girl is described white, five foot three, 120 pounds, blond hair, blue eyes. police are not saying her name. they may be headed to saint joseph, darlington, or kingston, missouri. he is believed to be driving a

if you have any ins, you are asked to call 911. two people shot to death in littleton and police say they don't believe anyone else is involved. they are looking into the circles. a man and woman was found shot in a home close to littleton high school. when police arrive, the man was dead. the woman died later at a hospital. police have not released their names. a man once suspected of being involved in the murder of the colorado prisons chief is suspected at taking aim at another person connected to the doc. he is in custody at a hospital after an attempted burglary and a shoot-out with police. whitney wild has the details. >> reporter: 34-year-old thomas gooley is a member of a notorious white supremist prison gang. tonight, we confirmed chilling evidence that he might be targeting another doc employee. neighbors say this surveillance video shows him approaching a

sierra springs drive in colorado springs the night before new year's eve. the video shows the suspect approaching the house, leaving, then approaching again. someone comes outside, then runs back in. then, a 911 call. >> someone trying to get in? >> reporter: days later, the damage to the garage is clear. about two minutes after the 911 call, the suspect started shooting. >> shots fired. >> 2052. >> reporter: then a chase. >> back up, back up. >> 45. >> reporter: property records show he tried breaking into a home that belongs to a former department of corrections employee. what's more, he was once connected to the murder of the agency's leader tom clemens in 2013. >> he was a person of interest in the clemens homicide, but was never charged with anything. again, we are looking at a pretty violent offender here. >> reporter: a spokeswoman

but told 9news in an e-mail appropriate information was shared with employees. she went onto write management staff were given information to share. he has a long criminal history including charges for violent crimes and parole violations. the department of corrections could not say when that employee left the agency and did not say exactly how employees were notified or when. gooley is in the hospital under arrest on $1 million bond. he is expected to make a court appearance january 13. >> this is certainly worrisome for so many families connected to the area. >> our hope with this story is people will see this and recognize this is a real threat, but it is certainly very troubling information. >> thank you whitney. vice president biden having second thoughts. in an interview with the state of vermont, he has regrets about not getting into the race for president. >> i regret it everyday, but it

family and for me. and i plan on staying deeply involved and we have two good candidates. >> a slip of the tongue. he said two. there are actually three. martin o'malley is still in the race. there could be trouble at a campaign stop for donald trump in vermont. his staff gave out 20,000 tickets for a venue that only has 1400 seats. it is in burlington, vermont, bernie sanders' hometown. security will be tight. and protests are expected. two people in southern colorado have been arrested accused of trying to kill a teacher. 19-year-old courtney plant was arrested in florence last night. tonight, police caught up with 37-year-old shawn overstreet. plant went to the former teacher's house. asked him to help her with a broken down truck. she led him to a u-haul truck. there, overstreet jumped out and stabbed the former teacher four times.

able to jump into the car of someone asking by at the time. plant and overstreet then rammed the car with their u- haul. the suspects stole the teacher's car and took off. tonight police arrested overstreet during a traffic stop. he stole the u-haul involved in the attack. nothing yet for a motive. charges will not be filed against an off duty central city police officer who fired his service weapon in a road rage incident. the bullet hit the motorcycle of the suspect. the incident happened in october in golden. no one was hurt. 9news reporter jonathan gonzalez joins us. >> reporter: golden police say the alleged road rage happened outside of the jurisdiction so the motorcyclist will not be charged. as for the officer, the shooting was accidental which indicates negligence, but not

the shooting happened october 25 and patrick stanton noticed a motorcycle driving aggressively around a sedan on highway 6 toward golden. the motorcyclist jeremy golden admitted he lost it after he said the driver of the nissan bumped him from the back. stanton who had already called 911 said he tried to defuse the situation. when he saw golden get off his bike and head toward the nissan. eventually, he got out of his suv and was soon involved in a struggle with golden. he fired one shot into the gas tank of his motorcycle. stanton told investigators he feared for his safety and did not plan to fire the weapon. >> the only thing worse than this officer's judgment is his marksmanship which is a good thing for jeremy. >> reporter: no one was hurt in what the report called an accidental shooting. attorney david lane represents golden. >> even if this was accidental, you know, if it was a civilian and a cop were endangered they

like wreck less endangerment. >> reporter: both men's behavior was called inappropriate. but they did not find the decisions made that day to be criminal. >> there is no need for a gun to come out. not only that, there is no need for a gun to be fired. >> reporter: the final decision came from the district attorney's office. golden's attorney says they will review the investigation to determine whether to file a civil rights lawsuit. >> so is sergeant stanton back in work? >> reporter: he is on active duty. but they will conduct their own investigation into his actions. >> thank you. chipotle has become the focus of a federal criminal investigation now. the case is connected to the norovirus incident last summer people. chipotle has been linked to an e. coli outbreak that impacted 20 states and another outbreak of norovirus in boston last

it is having an impact on the company's bottom line. the main in charged of united airlines went through a heart transplant. oscar munoz had a heart attack in october and has been away since then. he plans to return to work in two to three months. the hard times for macy's are not over yet. the department store chain had a disappointing holiday season and plans to cut 4500 positions and close 36 stores nationwide. macy's says holiday sales were down about 5% from last year while overall holiday spending was up nearly 8% nationwide. most of the store closings were in california and the east coast. no colorado stores on the list. the company has closed 52 stores and opened 12 new ones. just ahead, snow is just moving into the mountains. when kathy sabine expects it to start. >> and the robber who doesn't

she is wanted in several states. each crime follows the same pattern. she will case the place, come back and chat up a worker. that is when she takes out a gun and forces the employees into a back room. ties up the workers, steals their skis and takes what they want. avatar step aside. star wars the force awakens is the biggest box office hit of all time in the u.s. it passed avatar's record. it took avatar 34 weeks to set the record in 2009. star wars is gaining on avatar to be the biggest global box office hit of all time. in case you missed them before, the winning numbers, we have them for the $524 million power ball jackpot. again on your screen, they are on the screen. this is the sixth largest jackpot in u.s. history. megamillions is the only game that has gone above 600 million.

money is being raised to help put timbers from the discovered ship on display for the public. speaking of ships, what is it that sang that sailors have about a red sky take warning? it is pretty, but signs of change as not one, two, three storm systems on the way. the first wave coming in will bring light snow to the front range. in the next 24 hours only an inch of snow. the second wave will bring another couple of inches of snow. that will bring total snow accumulation amounts in the two to four inch ranges in denver when the pattern shifts yet again. temperatures in the mid 40s for denver. above average in southeast colorado. comfortable conditions in the high country. the temperatures are trending above average. we are done with the warm weather trend. after a nice break, we are headed back into the deep freeze with another arctic cold front. 28 degrees at the airport at this hour. you know what? the first wave is already

it will lift quickly northeast. this system not fairly organized. not really coming together all that well. unlike the one bringing more heavy flooding rainfall to southern california. heavy know to the syria mountain range. advisories are out much of the u.s. heavy know expected with the winter snow warning along the san juan. areas around cortez already reporting moderate snow tonight. snow advisory for about half a foot of snow in south western colorado, this will be upgraded to a winter storm watch. with the second wave coming in. we are really going to see some good snow at many of your favorite resorts savoring the resorting in southern colorado. the first low, stays south, northeast. second low comes in tomorrow night. but will interact with a cold front to the north creating that wind shift. that northeast up slope flow that will not only bring us a cold weather trend that will last into the weekend, as we start to see the numbers drop tomorrow, but that is the one

stick around a couple of days. tonight, the snow increasing across the west and central mountains and you know, we are really watching the west and southwest facing slopes late in the day. light snow will develop in denver. it will be sporadic. about this time thursday night, nice heavy band sits right over the top of us. the models have not handled the storm very well. yesterday, they have had the heavy band just east of denver. it is over the top of us. it may shift yet again. a quick one to three inches of snow and other areas will see trace amounts but the foothills will do well with this system. bailey, evergreen, colorado springs and down across the palmer divide will see probably three to six inches of snow at the system winding its way through. keep in mind, this is going to happen off and on for the next 48 hours. so, lows tonight. 19 greeley. 24 in limon. 26 salida.

milder to the south tomorrow. only slightly above average for southern colorado. tomorrow will be one of the warmer days with foothill temperatures in the mid 30s for bailey, conifer, and evergreen. allow for a little extra time in the morning in case roads are slick or wet. less than half an inch of accumulation in the morning. taper off. only to return tomorrow night. one to two inches tomorrow. morning. system winds down. the weekend is clear, but cold. get a little bit of a warming trend into early next week. the next chance for snow is thursday of next week. but this is just great news for many of your favorite ski resorts. drew is in next with sports.

they win 78-75. avalanche forward matt duchene was named an all-star and played like one tonight. he scored his team lining 19th goal just five minutes after the opening faceoff against the saint louis blues. they trail 3-2 in the third period. and ken griffey jr. received a record 99.9% of the votes and is headed to the baseball hall of fame. three complete idiots felt his 630 homers were not sufficient to make it to the hall of fame. >> mike piaza is also headed to the hall of fame. >> look at him go. >> the steroid guys, bonds, clemens all got left out. larry walker not even close. only 15% of the vote. you need 75.
