a look at downtown denver. i-25. you can see traffic still moving along a good speed at this hour. that is good news. it is in the foothills. there is very dense fog along i- 70 in genesee. we have seen similar issues on floyd hill. rabbit ears pass had freezing fog and falling snow tonight. danielle grant in the weather center with the weather conditions tonight. >> the fog will be an issue for us overnight and into tomorrow morning as well as the plummeting temperatures. a cold arctic blast is moving in. 7 in bismarck. the cooler air in colorado. teen ins fort cool lins and greeley. a few spots still starting to tumble out there in the high country. right now, visibility doesn't look that great down there in

he was shot three times at close range, but a philadelphia police officer was still able to chase after the man who am burred him. late last night, officer jesse hartnett was sitting in his patrol car when a man approached him and began shooting. the suspect fired 11 times three of those bullets him him in the arm. he suffered a broken arm and nerve damage. >> his will to live undoubtedly saved his life. we are ever so thankful to god he is here today. because, this could have easily been a police funeral. >> the suspect confessed the shooting was inspired by islam isis. the firearm was stolen by an officer's home back in october of 2013. a much maligned sheriff's department has a new round of scrutiny headed its way. today, the denver medical examiner called the denver

he was restrained by half a dozen deputies. the autopsy suggested marshall died partially as a result of pneumonia after vomit entered his lungs after a spit mask covered his face. marshall's family wants the deputies charged for the crime. >> please show us the evidence. i'm at a loss for words. suffering. his last moments on this earth, how scared he was. and, it is not fair. >> this is a tragic event. tragic for the marshall family and the deputies and the staff. we are anxious to have closure for this. we are committed to a thorough investigation. >> it is vital to note the term homicide as used by the coroner does not necessarily mean that a murder or another crime occurred. the denver district attorney will decide if charges are

the six denver jail deputies involved are still at work. they won't have any contact with prisoners until the investigation is complete. police in englewood think they captured a man responsible for several burglaries. a smash and grab on east hampden, then on broadway. they noticed food prints in the snow. adrian hicks was arrested. if you watched any local tv in the last two years you know how this end. bel heen hit by a car. it really isn't the end after all. anastasiya bolton helps us to catch up with trooper hee. >> hello angie.

>> reporter: 21 months since trooper hee almost lost his life. in march of 2014, he tried to stop a man who carjacked several drivers in a number of cities and it was doing 96 miles an hour in a stolen van when he swiped trooper hee. >> had i been head on, i probably wouldn't be speaking to you right now. yep. >> reporter: hee looks like a soldier who survived a war zone. >> you made it. >> reporter: since that day, he has been fighting to get back on his feet. literally. >> you feel like you could chase a bad guy? >> at 4.5. [ laughter ] >> reporter: chasing bad guys is all he has ever wanted to do after three other careers, he joined the state patrol at age 45. so that near death experience, he wasn't going to let that

>> i have to keep positive thinking. and, i think that is what has gotten me through. a lot of prayers and thoughts coming from the public. my church. my friends. even my physical therapist and the people that helped me to get better. they are constantly pushing me to get better and better and better. and, that motivation coming from the outside has helped me on the inside. >> reporter: the crash changed his approach to life. >> i'm more cautious about things. i'm more passionate about things. you know. more things are from the heart than just from the mind. >> reporter: there is one more change. he is still working on it. he has not been able to forgive the driver who almost took his life. >> it takes a strong person to be able to do that. i have seen other people do that but i don't know if i'm at that level yet. what does it take? i don't know.

to kill me before. so, i mean, if that is actually what he tried to do. >> well, i don't know what it takes to forgive someone who tried to kill you. trooper hee is back on the road. he went back to his job in december and he is actually working tonight. dui patrol. he is super excited now. it will be in the teens outside and he is excite today go to work. that says everything. he just loves to do the right thing. he loves to serve and he is really thrilled at the opportunity to be back out there doing it. >> one of the most striking things in this entire arc of history is learning that he was so tenacious to stay after law enforcement career that he only realized at age 45. no wonder he refuses to give it up. >> he was like uh-uh.

zoism going to make this one count. >> he is back where he want to be serving the community for us. thank you. there is no way to sugar coat it. this was the worst first week of any year in the history of the u.s. stock market and the worst for the dow jones along with the s&p 500 since 2011. the s&p 500 lost more than a trillion dollars in value this week alone. the problems not necessarily with the u.s. economy. china still struggling. there are questions about the price of oil which continues to fall to 11 year lows. there are also exmerits warning of inflation dangers in our country and more interest rate hikes possibly as early as march. one positive factor is the rate at which jobs are still growing. 295,000 jobs were added in the u.s. last month. tomorrow night's power ball drawing jumped from 700 to $800 million today.

have, that top prize may go to 900 million or even a billion dollars by the time the numbers are drawn. a couple of things to keep in mind here. those who want to play have until 7:30 tomorrow night to get a ticket. they cost $2 and you will have to have cash. if you are looking to play the law of averages, here are the numbers drawing the most all- time with power ball. they are 26. 41, 16, 42, 35, 39. consider this. not a single one of those numbers was drawn on wednesday night. and remember, the odds are exactly the same for any of the combinations and are reminder the odds are one in 292 million. nobody tells donald trump, but people are crossing the border to play power ball. they are coming from ontario into michigan to buy tickets. the $800 million jackpot with today's exchange rate would be 1.3 billion canadian dollars.

nevada is one of them. with vegas just 40 miles from the california border, that metro area's population has gone to line up at the first store over the border in california. we no the media spend more time hyping the power ball than a lot of us would prefer. we don't talk about the problems associated with gambling. take time. jonathan gonzalez joins us now. >> reporter: gambling addiction lottery's success. we spoke with a gambling counselor saying too many people are willing to spend their hard-earned money on a gamble. a wish like power ball. >> it is not as well known that gambling can be so problematic. >> reporter: julie smith is a gambling counselor. >> a lot of people lose their money and it is not a calculated loss. >> reporter: she says most people do not budget in their lotto spending willing to pay

>> they are not budgeting the money as a form of entertainment. they lose it and it is gone and there was nothing beneficial about it. >> reporter: even one small lottery win can lead to a bigger gambling issue that another potentially bigger win is somehow within grasp if they keep playing. >> hoping to get winnings back on the money they are investing because they are counting on it paying off. >> reporter: it is a so-called chase. one minnesota state lawmaker tried to make people more aware of last year. >> things like, at the end of the day, there are some addictions that can follow it. >> reporter: he called for a larger number of lottery commercials and billboard to be dedicated to gambling addiction warning. as for smith, she says certain people are more likely to become gambling than others, especially if they had a role model who also gambled. >> they start putting hundreds, thousands into guessing the right number. >> reporter: at the end of the

>> rubber met the road a thousand times over when a moving truck carrying 32,000 pounds of shoes overturned on a turnpike near miami. highway patrol says five people were inside of the cabin. some went to the hospital. then the cleanup began. crews had to close a ramp to the turnpike and used a bulldozer to clear the piles of shoes. they were donations on their way to haiti and south america. a father in florida is under investigation after his son took a toy car out for a bit of a joyride. the three-year-old drove a small motorized car along a busy highway.

this morning was all about the snow. thanks for sending in your photos including the patio furniture one. one. the two to five range is what we saw at perry park. castle rock close to four. 2.7 in evergreen and morrison. 2.5. we are dealing with a patchy freezing fog out there. this is i-70. lookout mountain, tough for drivers dealing with a quarter mile or less visibility. i'm anticipating the fog to move into the metro denver area. a good cloud deck overhead and traffic not too shabby. this morning about midnight or so, 29 degrees was the warmest time of the day and we have been slowly cooling off. basically staying in the low 40s all afternoon long. and really that is where we are. out of the airport. 20 degrees. the winds haven't been all that impressive. pretty quiet and calm out there. windchill at 20 degrees but humidity up at 85%. there is a lot of moisture to work with out there.

tracking off to the east into parts of texas taking with it all the snow that brought the front range and southeast colorado. we have a counterclock wise action going spinning up a little bit of snow. in the denver area, it is relatively quiet, the moisture is moving out. a couple of flakes floating around overnight early tomorrow morning. no accumulation. you can see the bands of snow going strong all afternoon and evening in southeast colorado are beginning to wind down as well. here's the deal. we will go throughout the remainder of the evening with mostly cloudy skies. the snow showers in the high country wind down, plenty of moisture to work with and the terrain. so i am anticipating maybe a little more snow to roll back into the forecast by tomorrow afternoon. west of the continental divide. you may have a few flakes falling while you are cruising down the slopes. here we will stay dry. the i-25 corridor a mix of sun and clouds. single digit temperatures once again tomorrow.

to the cold. you can see the huge trough deepening around here. the polar air dips in and invades parts of the upper midwest. minneapolis again is going to be biting coming up this weekend. tonight, the single digits. eastern plains as well. one degree in sterling. three in leadville. alamosa, 0 for you guys. 8 here in town with the snow winding down. it will be really cold. look at tomorrow. 0 in bismarck. 6 in minneapolis. makes our 25 look not that bad. cool air will be on the fringe of colorado. we will stay in the mid 20s around the state. that will be about 20 degrees cooler than where we should be this time of the year. we stay in the 20s around the foothills as well. 21 in loveland. low 20s in ellington and eatonton. a couple of seasonal days. wednesday and thursday in the

the linebacker is an all-pro. in his contract year. the only bronco. mike has more in his notebook. >> reporter: there was a lot of talk today that the number one defense should have had more than one first all team selection. but instead the honor did go to denver's best defensive player and that is von miller. interesting that miller's 11 sacks this year were only the fourth most in his five year career. yet, he deserved this honor because he is the one guy opposing offense's game plan against. >> we led the league in sacks. he was the guy. he got a lot of sacks but he also got double teamed a whole lot. it really helped the overall pass coverage. >> it shows the type of defense we had. you don't get the players on defenses that are not good. we have a great team. >> reporter: as for the all pro team overall, some changes need to be made. it is ridiculous they gave an
