12:10 pm
i know it is lunchtime. but a question to consider, how much alcohol do you drink every day, maybe with dinner every night? there are new recommendations out of the u.k. that are trending. everyone is talking about them and not good news for those who like to enjoy more than one drink every day. dr. john is here. the u.k. is saying this, which, you know, every corner has a pub on it. what are they trying to do? >> what they are trying to do, even in moderation, you have to be careful with alcohol. the recommendation is up until now, it has been here in the united states, u.k. was the same thing, two drinks a day for men, one drink a day for women, and that is kinds of the limit. because it helps your heart. it has some heart benefits to it. but we also know, we have talked about this, that alcohol can lead to cancer issues. and so you have to be careful. it is a fine line you're walking. well, the government in the u.k. just released guidelines that cut the amount for men, by a third. but they didn't adjust the recommendations for women. and the reason they did that is because it seems like that one
12:11 pm
you still get that kind of heart benefit but due get the cancer issues -- you don't get the cancer issues as much. it is always going to be there, but as much. and they are saying 14 units a week, which is six beers or seven glasses of wine a week and they are saying per week, they want to have alcohol free days during the week. because that gives your body a break. and that probably doesn't happen a lot there, and probably not here either for those who drink on a regular basis. >> i wonder if people will follow that. >> i don't know. in the united states, we haven't gone to that recommendation. this is the first country to do that. and so it is going to be interesting to see what happens, and you know, if we start following the same recommendations, and where we go from there. >> because last week it was cut down on sugar. and we will see if it is next. and we think about sleeping at night. and now we have something else to worry about. that not sleeping well enough could cause alzheimer's? >> right. and this is kind of a turn- around from what we thought before. before, we used to say, okay, early sign of alzheimer's is people having sleep problems. but the alzheimer's itself causes sleep type issues.
12:12 pm
from the other side, and saying is it possible that the sleep issues are causing alzheimer's? or at least putting you at risk of alzheimer's higher and the reason they think it is happening because when we sleep at night, when we get into deep sleep and we will talk about that in a minute, it actually cler clears out the amyloid plaques in the brain. it flushes them out and get rid of the amyloid plaques that leads to alzheimer's. and if we can get to the deep sleep, and that's the important part. eight hours of sleep being important and search to nine is the range, and -- seven to nine is the range and it has to be quality sleep, deep sleep and that's when the body restores itself and the brain restores itself. >> and i didn't realize our brain does it every night. >> it does it every night. >> and think about it, when you are dreaming, your brain ask trying to reorganize -- is trying to reorganize, and rearrange, and get the unusuallies in certain position and it is trying to clean out all of the stuff that we gunked up during the day with all of the things we see and think and hear. >> deep sleep, the important part.
12:13 pm
a jefferson county charter school is going green by adding solar panels. it is a way to not only conserve energy, but to teach the kids about solar power, and alternative energies. and 9 news reporter amelia earhart reports from spring horizon montesorri school. >> we are here at free horizon montesorri in golden, and while this school may look like any other, you can see the backpacks just tucked into all of these cubby, the difference with this school, it happens up on the roof. 500 solar panels, all part of a brand new solar array have just been installed and today the ribbon is cut to an incredible improvement to the school. the solar array will provide about 90% of the school's electricity and teach kids a lot about the process of alternative energy sources. so we want to talk to bethlehemkey who is an integral part of the school.
12:14 pm
horizon? >> i am the director of facilities and management. >> and it was your idea to introduce a program like this. and tell us about the inspiration and how the process has gone so far. >> it has been a collaboration between our school administration, our board of directors, and our building corporation, but ultimately, we hold pretty authentically to respect ourself and the environment and we take the environment piece pretty literally. and something to support, and this is a way to make it tangible and walk the walk, when it came to ways in which we could do it for the school. and then also teach students about ways that they can also have a positive impact on the environment. >> that's great. what are some of the ways that the kids are going to practically learn about conserving nerk energy and about alternative using for energy. >> we have a great live dashboard with a realtime feed of the leb electricity that is produced through the solar array and that ties into the
12:15 pm
it is something they can dig deeper, and protecting our environment, and that is the nest big work of our -- next big work of our next generation. it is something that they need to continue to dig deep on. with the experience that they have coming to school and the first thing they see walking into the lobby is the solar dashboard. they will see that tangibly and translate into their own inspirations to transfer to technology and help the environment overall. i'm excited to see what they come back around and do for the next generation. >> we are excited as well. you just put out a challenge for the other schooling in the district to start looking into other -- schools in the district to start looking into other sources of energy. to learn more about what your school has done, where can they go? >> we have information on the web site free horizon montesorri.org. particularly for schools, given how lean the financing for schools in colorado is, the double win is the cost savings
12:16 pm
of the project and we expect to save over half a million dollars over the energy expenditures and that is huge for the school. that is money that can go back directly into the classroom to make an impact. free horizon montesorri.org. information on our school. information on the solar project. i would also welcome calls from any schools that are interested in pursuing it as well. >> all right. wonderful. we are proud of what you are doing. >> thank you. >> you can learn more on our web site, www.9news.com. >> thank you, amelia. speaking of new technology, aims community college is opening a brand new public safety training facility next week where students and first responders will use the facility for classes and real life simulation. you got to see. this colleen ferrera reports from the facility in windsor. >> reporter: inside the new facility, they have brand new tools. this right in front of me is a digital cadaver lab. one of the first in colorado. students, emts, doctors, can come here and train with the technology on this table. and they can use that out in the field. or in the operating room. i want to show you how it works
12:17 pm
you kind of just select a cutting cool. an operating tool. and then look at this right over here. okay. i've just cut off that part of the head, so now, i can look inside, i can examine the brain. and after i am done with this area, i can just make his head grow right back. or i could actually take this down to his stomach area, and then chi do all sorts of research -- i could do all sorts of research there. this is really cool because doctors in our area could come here, and they could upload images, before they actually go into the operating room, and do that surgery, so they can kind of do a test run, before they go in and do their real thing. and also, emts and students can train on images just like this, over here. and so that when they go out into the field, they have that hands-on learning experience, and that simulation and they can apply that to everything that they have to do out in the field. in windsor, i'm colleen ferrera, 9 news. >> thank you, colleen. that is fascinating. so have you got your broncos fever yet? ahead of the playoff game this
