one person called outside of his jurisdiction. this all took place at the statehouse in colorado springs. 10 u.s. sailors a bond 2 -- aboard to maybe points -- two neighbor aborts -- navy boats have been obtained -- detained. it is said that they were -- that they drifted into a rainy and territory. there -- the white house is working with iran. a mine -- a man died at the hospital after confrontation in a hotel parking lot yesterday afternoon. two officers were investigating a stolen vehicle in the parking lot of the ramada and super eight motels when they were aware of people trying to commit credit card fraud. police say that when they approach the card related to the credit cards, the men tried

killing the suspect. whether the man fired at officers is still under investigation. aurora police are assisting of a protocol for officer involved shootings. a driver that was involved in a crash that killed a holler it -- a colorado state trooper and injured another was in court today. he faces first-degree murder and attempted murder from the event on may 23. he was going 90 miles per hour when he tried to get away from the officer on highway 66 outside of longmont. fort collins police are searching for two men accused of trying to rob a woman at gunpoint. this happened monday morning on january 5 at the creekside apartments. the men ran up to the female victim and try to steal her

we have had air-quality issues for the start of the week. those continue into today and through tomorrow. the epa has declared another action alert the cut -- that does not expire until tomorrow afternoon. the air quality is causing problems for that sensitive group and burning restrictions are in effect below 7000 feet. great roads out there with quiet conditions and temperatures in the 40s. partly cloudy skies. there is not on the road as far as the weather goes. we are tracking stronger when gusts. in the foothills, we have gusts up to 50 miles per hour. the wind will remain active through the afternoon and evening. no alerts or warnings have been issued, but it is something you want to keep in mind, if used -- especially if you live in the area. high profile vehicles are okay to travel in that zone. the game for the tampa bay lightning starts at 7:00. after the game, 28 degrees. good information if you are

whoever controls the next congress, there is no reason why we should not own the 21st century. >> i don't think it is time for a farewell tour. it's time to solve problems. the south carolina governor, nikki haley, will get the republican address. she pushed for the republican shooting at the historic charleston. there is also speculation that she could show up on the gop vice presidential ticket later this year. here in colorado, governor. hickenlooper is set to get his state of the state address . he has grown opposed to the death penalty while in office. he told brandon rittiman today that he will not call for repeal of the death penalty in his speech. at least not this year. it is not going to make the state of the state this year? >> no. no more discussion.

i haven't seen a pole, but if you look at it, i think there are more people in the state of colorado that are looking at it and talking about it. not just in colorado, but across the country. i think in the next year or two. >> reporter: pushing for repeal in 2017 or 2018 which would be his final legislative session as governor. we will hear more from the governor at 9news at 5:00 and 6:00. we will also bring you the state of the state on our sister station, channel 20. two thirds of colorado voters want to keep the death penalty in state law which is consistent with other polls that have asked the question here in colorado. doctors are seeing more cases of the flu across the country. two states are reporting widespread flu, maryland and north carolina. there is also it -- an increase in cases now.

cases. the situation is different here right now, right dr. john? >> it is different because the cases have not been as severe or as numerous as before. that could change at the drop of a hat. let's put that in perspective. last year in late december, 2014, colorado had over 500 hospitalizations in just one week along -- alone. so far we have had 22 hospitalizations this flu season since october. influenza h kick which -- a which is h1n1 is in several counties. it is still time to get a shot. you are more likely to be infected by the flu than to win the lottery. remember that the next time you buy your ticket. >> so often we see these cases

challenges, the hotel will start coming out of the ground in aurora. it will make aurora the hotel construction capital of the u.s. just 10 minutes over the hill from dia, the site preparation is new -- is nearly complete. it will complete -- it will create nearly 10,000 construction jobs and permanent jobs after the hotel is complete. it is a massive billion-dollar undertaking. there will be 2,000,000 ft.2 with 1500 hotel rooms and 800,000 ft.2 of convention and meeting space. the mayor says that the hotel will generate hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue. >> overtime, you are talking about literally billions of dollars that come into the state's coffers. it will help to support what we want to do with this lifestyle here in colorado. >> reporter: the gaylord

>> researchers have come out with landmark starting -- study says that slowing or preventing brain inflammation can help. >> this is a positive step. how to be a compstat?>> the important thing is the positive step. the study looked at brain inflammation and alzheimer's disease. trials on humans should start soon. for a long time, inflammation has been linked to alzheimer's. the study show that information is not a result of the cities -- of the disease, but could be a key driver.>> part of the reason why. >> right now that we know certain proteins can cause inflammation. they are narrowing in on what is happening. one study looks at the brains of patients who have died that had alzheimer's.

the brain. the more advanced the alzheimer's, the more proteins they had. they gave mice a chemical -- they actually bread the mice to have this protein. then they have this chemical was -- which blocks the cells. they had better memories and not as many behavioral problems. this is something that could stabilize alzheimer's and hopefully prevent it. that is the holy grail. but, they need to do human in the meantime, inflammation is a big key and you need to make sure you get that under control.>> the more of the cells that exist in the brain, the more information? information will impact your body and your brain as well.

it can lead to alzheimer's. that's a big trail of things to follow. if we can stop that at the beginning and block it off, hopefully it will make an impact on alzheimer's.>> anything to get little bit of extra sleep.>> [ indiscernible - multiple speakers ].>> in america, i think sleep is a problem. people don't get enough sleep here and we don't value it enough. sleep should be one third of the day. it's time for the body to regenerate. that is the time that the brain can go into the deep sleep and get the brain organized. it cannot be eight hours of restless sleep, it needs to be quality sleep. >> we are trying to get the whole country to embrace the idea of kindergarten and an app again. you don't appreciate the nap -- a nap again.

it is really cold. it is beautiful everywhere in our city today. it was a beautiful january day with a mix of sun and clouds. we hold off on the chance of snow until later in the week. if you spent time outside today, you didn't know that we were in the 40s. it was 43 in denver and cooler than that in fort collins and really. in the high country, we managed 1 degree in gunnison. it is already colder than that 1 degree. here in the city we are at 41. factor in the wind and it feels like 35. i am bundled up in the backyard. i have to confess that i think i need to live in colorado a little longer to come out here without a coat. i am chili and it is 43. let's look at the weather across the state. 36 and fort collins -- in fort collins.

in the mountain valleys, we are seen 3 below in gunnison. some places down to 15 or 20 below. we are not done with the cold weather in the evening and valleys. in the future cast, is going to forward to wednesday. conditions. it is early thursday morning when we start to see snow that edges into our northern and central mountains. hours. that snow doesn't really arrive mountains. you will see sunshine. the high will be 56 with wind at 10-20 miles per hour. the westerly wind helps to warm us up above average. we should be closer to 44 degrees this time of year. at 7:00 in the morning, the temperatures will be 22 degrees.

oh, are you looking at me?>> he is very relaxed, but i am told he is full of puppy energy. this is nate and this is kentaro from the south platte valley. kentaro is only four months and he has neuter . he is a great pyrenees mix. he comes to us because he was rescued from a reservation community. he is very eager to please and a sweet little boy. he would love to be a part of any active family. he likes to give affection and get affection. socialization and he likes to

well. i think this would be a great addition to your family. we do here that he has a lot of energy. again, kentaro comes to us from the humane society of the south platte valley. he is a wonderful puppy and i don't think he will have a problem being adopted. if you would like to find out more about adoption you can -- the humane society of the south platte will have events this weekend. january 16 that linndale pets mart and the other one at the highlands match -- glenn dale pets mart and the other one in highlands ranch. we hear that he loves to play in the snow. we have plenty of snow days and the forecast coming up as long as winter lasts. i think he would be a great model for those snow pictures.
