meteorologist marty coniglio and amelia earhart is here. >> we have a couple of high today. high winds warning out around wheatland, cheyenne, this goes all the way through tomorrow afternoon. they can see some wind gusts up to 25 miles per hour. we're already getting 20-50 foothills. there's not a lot of action. we're not going to be tremendously windy in the metro area. if you get west of kipling today, it starts getting gusty. we're going to feel the warmth, mid to upper 50s around town. colorado. we could even have a few of the foothill communities touching 50 degrees during the afternoon today. jet stream keeps us warm today. by thursday into friday, we

move in, and with it, snow. mountain snow starts tomorrow morning. goes on and off throughout the day. the mountains. tomorrow, 1-4-inch range. we'll get additional snow coming up friday into saturday. we have light snow in our future as well. we'll talk about that in a few minutes. time to get out the door for you. amelia has the latest on what's going on in the streets. >> waking up on your wednesday drive, roads are dry. expect a lot of sun glares today. with the winds out west, we could see gusty conditions blowing snow on 93 and also a drive across i-70. we're nice and clear. excellent beginnings there as you push through the bridges. across our area side streets, we've been quiet with one exception. that's the fatal overnight crash right at the intersection of stock show drive and franklin. we'll have more details coming

in that immediate area, 54 is a good route. your corridor is still open as well. as you exit the roads, do expect to see flashing lights with the ongoing investigation. we've still got slowdowns across 25 in the area. we're dropping down to 23 miles per hour on the approach to i- 70 i-70. 10 navy sailors are free this morning. this comes after they were seized by the iranian government. their boat drifted into their waters. one of the boats developed mechanical problems, and both of them drifted off course. >> here in denver, who men -- after their car rolled over. someone passing the crash called police. they don't know how it happened.

we'll post it on the 9news app. it is 5:33 now. a couple in their 70s and some of their neighbors are recovering after they tried to save the couple's adult son. he has multiple sclerosis. he could not get out on his own. news reporter -- 9news reporter noel brennan is outside the house. firefighters and neighbors risked their lives to try to save this family. >> that's the story we're hearing. we're on west sanford avenue. you see the home behind me. restoration crews just finished boarding up this house. we have video from a neighbor, some cell phone video that shows what this house looked like when it was fully engulfed in flames. about 7:00 last night, that's when denver fire and west metro fire responded to this house fire. flames were shooting from the roof. we're told it started in the basement and worked its way up. the flames were incredibly powerful.

his 40s who had ms was bedridden was not able to get out of his house. his elderly parents were. again, neighbors rushed over to help. several of them, firefighters tried to get everyone inside out safely. when firefighters first got there, they say the flames were so incredibly intense that initially they had to back away. >> at one point the fire was so significant that the firefighters thought that they were going to have to back out for their own safety, but through the efforts of the fire department, we were able to find two of the victims who have been removed and transported to area hospitals. unfortunately, we found one deceased victim. >> i went to their backyard. the whole back, flames were going up the house. the first responders were already there. there were firemen in the backyard, they had ladders up, trying to get people out of the house.

the neighbors, and the elderly couple were taken to the hospital for their injuries. another firefighter was treated injuries. we still don't have the cause of the fire, investigators that. >> thank you, noel. it's just about 5:36 right now. news. for the first time since december '03, oil fell below 30 bucks a barrel. prices have rebounded this morning. it leads crude at 19% this year. 72% plunge from crude's june 2014 peak where it hit almost $108 a barrel. o'peck is in trouble. there's a massive supply glut right now. colorado oil and gas president dan haley says when a commodity

cuts are about top in the industry. we lost about 2,000 jobs in this sector last year. >> we're not seeing layoffs like we saw in colorado in the 1980s, but, again, we don't know where the bottom is. >> haley adds that oil field services has been the hardest hit in our state so far. couple years ago, there were about 77 rigs up and running. as of last friday, there were just 22. oil giant bp is going to cut some 4,000 positions worldwide, specifically in exploration. company leaders say they need to make the move because of the toughening conditions out there. it's been a drop in gasoline prices. that's making a lot of drivers happy. drivers have seen a huge drop in what we pay at the pump. the current average is $1.85. average. colorado's average is trending

right now. >> all right. greg. president obama broke the mold for his standard state of union speech last night. instead of delivering a long to- do list for congress like he usually does, he reflected on his achievements on the past seven years. on the upcoming election and challenges of the future. one of his big ideas deals with the quest to cure cancer. >> tonight i'm announcing a new national effort to get it done. because he's gone to the matt for all of us, i'm putting joe in charge of mission control. for the loved ones we've all lost. for the families that we can still save, let's make america the country that cures cancer once and for all. >> he called it like a moon shot to cure cancer. vice president biden, as you know, lost his son beau last cancer. biden worked with congress to

national institute of health. he'll be meeting with more agencies after this month to discuss ways for cancer treatment. biden says his goal is to make a decade worth of advances over the next five years. now, we also learned about a touching moment between biden and president obama. the vice president said after his son's death last year. the president offered him financial support if the bills got too high. biden mentioned he was prepared to sell his home in delaware to help his son's family pay their medical bills. president obama told him keep the home, i will give you the necessary money. vice president biden says it didn't come to that, but he really appreciated the offer. south carolina governor nikki haley was the republican to give the response to the state of the union address. she's the first female and first minority governor of south carolina that made her a

eager to reach more voters of color. she's also a contender to be a vice president nominee. her speech consisted of a heavy dose of criticism of the president. >> many americans are feeling the squeeze of an economy too weak to raise income levels. we're feeling a crushing national debt, a health care plan that has made insurance less affordable, and doctors less available. chaotic unrest in many of our cities. even worse, we're facing the most dangerous terrorist threat september 11th. and this president appears unwilling or unable to deal with it. >> well, today's lawmakers will head back to work. there will likely be a lot of debate over the state's budget. our house and republican senate

balance the books. republicans -- lawmakers are also expected to debate ideas to boost affordable housing in colorado. abortion rights and raising minimum wage will also likely be on the agenda. the state address and a wedding, it will be quite a week for governor hickenlooper. 9news political reporter brandon ritamen will be there. the governor is getting married on saturday. hickenlooper got engaged at the end of december. he said yesterday she discovered they could get married this weekend or they would have to wait a few months because of their really busy schedules, so they opted for a ceremony this weekend. >> she's going to be busy, that's for sure. making light rails for predictable.

he was stuck in a mix of sand, mud, and clay in oakland for more than 12 hours. the plumbing contractor was working a sewer line. the man was originally found 10 feet down and was in waist deep mud. about an hour ago, fire crews working in the pouring rain there brought him to safety. he was taken to the hospital. >> he's really lucky. >> yeah, he is. >> in money news, our partners are reporting that cdot has signed on with a high tech mapping company to help smooth i-70 mountain traffic. this is for next ski season. the idea is that 1,000 volunteers will use their cell phones and send location data to a cloud based data base where it will be combined with speed data and other

a little over 26 inches in snow here in denver. pushing 140 in monarch. almost 270 inches of snow. they have more on the way. temperature readings, 10, 20s, 30s. below zero on the other side of the hill in grand county. the reason for our warmth, the wind. we'll keep winds going between throughout the foothills. today and tomorrow morning, we could see gusts to near 60 miles per hour. today. day. >> sounds like it, marty. we're getting a lot of good news in the traffic center after son overnight closures near the stock show complex, as well as crashes up in commerce city. improvement. 24 at arapaho. waking up, area freeways are off to a very typical start. very dry roads.
