. we were reporting yesterday at this time that three teenagers had fallen through the ice at a retention pond in parker. we later learned they are sophomores who attend legend high school. one died. another is severely injured. the other, not hurt. 9news education reporter nelson garcia found a school community grieving and hoping at the same time. >> reporter: for for every person coming with flowers at parker-- >> we wanted to pay respects to happened. why? >> i have no clue as to why they were on the ice. i really wish i knew because-- >> i feel like he should still be here. >> reporter: 16-year-old patrick lentz died. the legend high school sophomore was submerged for at least 30 minutes. >> he was a great guy. he was very caring. he was very nice to everybody,

people you could meet. >> i don't know. i just -- i can't imagine what they are going through. his family and his friends. >> reporter: another sophomore, max gantyea remains hospitalized. his last listed condition was critical. family. every student in this building is like one of my own. >> reporter: principal jason jacobs says he and the community offer their support. >> and we will stand together strong and continue to remember these -- remember this incident and work with these families through this time to help guide them. >> reporter: jacob is grateful one of his sophomores, cole robinson, was saved from the pond. >> someone was there and was of our family members. i would love to give him a hug. i'm sure the family's giving well. >> reporter: as a parent? their kid. >> reporter: sorrow. people to be with.

to why three boys ventured on 9news. >> robinson was saved by a parker police officer who waded into the water and reached out with a tree branch. grief counselors with there for students today and will be classes resume. friends and classmates are holding a candlelight vigil in about an hour. so far, looks like the highcountry will get most of the moisture from this latest storm system. some parts of the mountains can expect up to 10 inches of snow, while we're likely only to see flurries in the city. a little more will likely fall in the foothills and the eastern plains. with a few more rounds of moisture coming in this weekend, we'll bring in meteorologist danielle grant with more. danielle, those gusty winds may be coming back, too. yeah, absolutely, brandon. a few flurries at best tonight in the city. if you have friday night plans, wear a good jacket. maybe the hat, maybe the gloves, too. temperatures are starting to cool off. winds are starting to pick up,

you can see on hd doppler 9 that the majority of the precip is positioned out there across northern colorado. we have a couple of bands shifting just to the south toward fort collins, into the greeley area as well in weld county. those will continue to move off to the south and to the east, just along the hog back, still keeping a close eye on the snowflakes flying out there. temperatures already diving into the 20s around the metro area and up and down the urban corridor as well. we're staying in the 30s across the eastern plains with teens up in the mountains. so those flurries flying tonight. a cool and rather unsettled weekend ahead. and plus, the broncos game day forecast i will have. brandon, i made a few changes. i'll let you know if we'll have snow or sunshine. >> all right. thank you very much, danielle. police are looking for a man who ran from a stolen car this morning near the denver country club. denver police say they tried to pull the car over, but the driver and the passenger didn't stop.

car to humboldt and bayotte avenue. denver police are looking for two men who shot a man in a leg during a car jacking near south sheridan and west kentucky avenue around 3:30 this morning. the man was taken to the hospital and should recover. police say the man's truck has not been found yet. it's a white chevy silverado with the plate number qeu 389. if you see it, call denver police. the big fight out of the gate in the state legislature is over money. governor john hickenlooper and his fellow democrats are making a hard push, trying to make the case for changing how the state treats a large hospital fee. the move could free up money to avoid some cuts and refunds to taxpayers. the governor talked tough in his state of the state address thursday, saying if the legislature doesn't go for his plan, then maybe it's time to, quote, reexamine taber. for sunday's balance of power, i asked the leaders of both chambers how seriously we should take that talk. >> do you have his back on that? is there anything the

this done? >> well, there's nothing the legislature can do except refer a measure to the ballot and that takes two-thirds votes of both chambers when it's a constitutional amendment. that will probably not happen. but that doesn't prevent us from being very involved with the communities out there who are very interested in a long- term solution to taber. >> do you think there's substance behind this? or do you think it's just posturing? >> you know, i don't believe that there is the will in the state inside or outside of this building to eliminate the taxpayer's bill of rights. what you don't hear in the state of the state speeches is, by the way, we added almost $300 million to a program in health and human services last year. >> that, by the way, a reference to rising medicaid costs. you can hear more from the people who decide how to spend your tax dollars sunday morning on balance of power.

followed by "meet the press" on channel 20. still no sign of any of the 12 crewmembers aboard two marine corps helicopters that crashed off the coast of hawaii last night. the waters off oahu are choppy. the sea stallions are heavy lift helicopters and were on a nighttime training mission. they collided 2 1/2 miles offshore. debris has been spotted, but no sign of the crew. michigan's governor is asking that a federal state of emergency be declared in flint after the water there was found to be contaminated with lead. the problem goes back to 2014 when the city began sourcing its water from the much saltier flint river to save money. environmentalists believe the salt corroded lead pipes that supplied the city's water. doctors found lead levels in children have doubled or tripled since the changeover. fema is in flint now, as the federal government decides to face requests for emergency assistance. >> get a close look at the situation in terms of the

impact that it has had and could have on local populations and the department of justice is obviously taking a look at the decisions that led to this particular situation. >> lead poisoning can damage the brain, the nervous system, stomach and kidneys. local leaders say the federal money would help replace the pipes and provide care for to that lead. hold on to your hats, your stomachs, for that matter, because the stock market took another wild dip today. volatility. stock prices plunged today, making this the worst two-week start to a year ever. they are down more than 8%, driven by a slowdown in china and the plunging price of oil. the dow finished down almost 391 points after being down by more than 500 points earlier in the day, so it actually rebounded. s&p lost a little over 41.5 points and the nasdaq is down almost 127.

come forward to claim their powerball winnings from wednesday's record $1.5 billion drawing. these are the people you hoped you would be. for now, they say they plan to keep working. john and lisa robinson are from munford, tennessee. they are the newest multimillionaires in the state. they bought their ticket at a neighborhood grocery store in a town of about 6000 people. two other winning tickets sold in california and florida. the robinsons revealed their lucky win this morning on "the today show." >> again, they are the same. look again, went running down the hallway, john, john, check the numbers! >> i checked them four times and i said, well, i'll believe it when the news comes on in the morning and they say, hey, there's a winner been in munford. >> can't imagine what it would be like in that living room. the robinsons plan to take a lump sum payout. that's going to be worth $327 million for them. first thing they plan to do is pay off their daughter's student loans. i'll say they would have a

up in the mountains, completely different story. winter park looks like a party out there where they have had plenty of powder moving in all afternoon long. you can see it's still coming down. the view on fort collins, while we don't see any snow, you can see it in the distance, as we have a few bands pressing into larimer and weld counties. downtown denver, a mix of clouds. the city skyline looking beautiful. as far as the snow forecast, tonight, into tomorrow morning, yeah, half inch or less here in the denver metro. less than an inch around northern colorado. then once you move toward morgan county, you guys might have a couple of snow bands overnight producing up to 2 inches. the mountains are the real winners with this system with 5 to 10 inches. weekend warriors, it's going to be a great day. a powder day both saturday and sunday. 27 right now at the airport. we have mostly cloudy skies, winds out of the east, 13 miles 16. if you're heading out on the town tonight, grab the jacket, the hat, gloves. you'll want them all later on.

temperatures in the mid-20s here around the denver metro. downtown, series of storms all across the country, a bit unsettled heading toward the weekend. our storm system right now, pushing just a bit further to the south into new mexico. still a couple of snow bands pushing in on the back side of this storm. right now out in the highcountry, along i-70, western slope, looking at a little bit of light snowfall. one particular band along i-80 toward cheyenne, just sinking to the south and to the east. then one moving in toward fort collins and stretching a little bit closer to greeley as well. here in denver, we haven't seen much. if you have, snap a picture. send it to me, tweet it, e-mail it to me. around the hog back, that's where the flurries are, and along i-70, if you're driving up late tonight getting ready for the fresh powder tomorrow morning, you might encounter a bit. also gusty winds up there, too, so blowing and drifting snow will probably be an issue for you guys as well. here it is, 6:00, 7:00 tonight, looks pretty quiet. tomorrow morning early on, about 1:00, 2:00, might have a

in from the north, then track quickly to the south and to the east. again, missing the denver metro area. by lunchtime tomorrow, couple of light little snow showers still firing up up in the mountains. then we'll have a second push as another wave rolls in by 5:00, 6:00 tomorrow afternoon, into the evening. it still stays dry for eastern colorado. again, the focus is going to be up on the mountains. about 4 to 7 for the san juans. 5 to 10 around the front range mountains, saguache and mosquito range picking up about 3 to 7. so tonight here around town, teens for a lot of us. single digits in the mountains and some areas going subzero as usual. we're at 15 tonight here in the metro with just a couple of flurries here and there. then look at this. tomorrow, another day in the mid-30s. i think we start off with a little bit of sunshine. by the afternoon, you will notice those clouds starting to move in. 31 in evergreen. 23 in nederland. we'll be in the mid to upper 30s in northern colorado as well, with the foothills staying in the 20s.

. hi, everybody. the broncos' chances of winning sunday's playoff game were dramatically increased today. just before practice, the pittsburgh steelers declared superstar wide receiver antonio brown out due to lingering issues from the concussion he suffered during last weekend's first round victory over the cincinnati bengals. >> it's unfortunate for ab, man. it's game day. he probably really want to play. it's a big game for the steelers, big game for everybody. but we play the steelers, man. we know big ben is the engine that make it go for real. so he's playing. so we're going to prepare the same way. the broncos insist they don't look ahead, but we can and do, and we're live.

matas is in boston already waiting to find out who the broncos' next opponent is. hi, aaron. >> reporter: hi, drew. yes, the new england patriots hosting the kansas city chiefs on saturday afternoon. the winner advances to the afc championship game, which would be in denver, provided the broncos do beat pittsburgh on sunday. you figure the mighty patriots at home in the playoffs is a sure thing. well, there is reason to doubt. it was a sure thing, at 10-0, the new england patriots were looking like heavy favorites to make a return trip to the super and then c.j. anderson happened. >> c.j. anderson to the house! denver wins it! >> reporter: tail spin from there. the patriots lost four of their final six games to close the year and now host a kansas city team that's won 11 in a row. >> obviously they are doing a lot of right things. by accident. there are not a lot of things they haven't been doing well.
