of the north, light rain-snow mix possible next week before another warm spell next week. for the championship game sunday, now, things look pretty good. like that a lot. thanks, much on behalf of everybody, have a great day, we are going over to channel 20. . good morning. the gloves come off in the final democratic debate before the iowa caucuses. hillary clinton and bernie sanders spar over guns, banks and healthcare. >> to tear it up and start over again, pushing our country back into that kind of a contentious debate, i think is the wrong direction. >> you received over $600,000 in speaking fees from goldman sachs in one year. >> donald trump and ted cruz

breaking overnight, the three americans released in prisoner swaps with iran arrive in germany. brutal, 52 million americans from the midwest to the east coast waking up to bitter cold temperatures this morning. as much of the northeast is hit with its first snow of the season, we're tracking it all. and not sticking the landing. an unmanned space x rocket touches down, then topples over, exploding into pieces. what is the team behind the mission is saying about it. january 18th, 2016. from nbc news this is today with matt lauer and savannah guthrie.
7:02 am
welcome to today on a monday morning, martin luther king day. can we go back to that video of that rocket? you know the space x folks saying we got it, we got it, we don't got it. do you get half credit for something like that? >> you get an a for effort. >> we're going to tell you more about what happened there in just a while, but let us start this morning with our top score ri -- story. hillary clinton clashing with bernie sanders on some big issues in this race. we have complete coverage starting with andrea mitchell who comoderated that debate. >> reporter: good morning. with this democratic contest a lot closer than anyone predicted, the candidates have been getting increasingly combative. that produced a fiery debate.
7:03 am
from the start first over guns. >> i have made it clear based on senator sanders' own record that he has voted with the nra numerous times. >> secretary clinton knows what she says is very disingenuous. i have a d minus voting record from the nra. >> reporter: clinton accused sanders of trying to kill obama. >> now, there are things we can do to improve it but to tear it up and start over again, pushing our country back into that kind of a contentious debate i think is the wrong direction. >> that is nonsense. what a medicare for all program does is finally provide in this country health care for every man, woman and child as a right. >> reporter: firing back, sanders blasted clinton's ties to wall street. >> i don't get personal speaking
7:04 am
>> i can take that. but he's criticized president obama for taking donations from wall street. and president obama has led our country out of the great recession. >> you have received over $600,000 in speaking fees from goldman sachs in one year. >> you're the only one on this stage that voted to deregulate the financial market in 2000. >> reporter: as to what role her husband would play if she won the white house -- >> well, it will start at the kitchen table. we'll see how it goes from there. i'm going to ask for his ideas, his advise and i'm going to use him as a good will emissary to go around the country to find the best ideas we've got. >> reporter: asked whether he regrets having called bill

disgraceful, sanders called it old news mplgtsd . >> have i ever once said a word about that issue? no, i have not. >> reporter: sanders showed no reluctance to trump in his own polls. >> she was 50 points ahead of me. we were all of three percentage points. in iowa, new hampshire, the race is very, very close. >> reporter: and in fact, after the debate, south carolina's leading democratic congressman told us that if bernie sanders wins big in iowa, it will redefine the race. he says he's got a much better organization here in south carolina than he had realized and that it could mean a replay of 2008 when hillary clinton lost to barack obama here. >> andrea, thanks. nice job last night, by the way. so will what we heard from the candidates change the dynamic of
7:06 am
chuck todd is moderator of meet the press. did you see a clear winner? >> i don't know if it was a clear winner but this was debate. if you were an alien plopped down on the earth and didn't follow the raise, you would have assumed bernie sanders was the front runner because he was the focal point of most of the debate. not until it got to foreign policy, was it clear that hillary clinton had a lot more command of the issues than bernie sanders. i think in many way this was bernie sanders' big moment. now, whether he was able to earn new supporters, i think that's what we're going to find out in the next week. i think he did nothing last week to lose anybody. he fired up his base. >> how do you like his tactic of tying hillary clinton to the big banks in wall street? >> i think in a democratic primary it's very effective. in this political environment,
7:07 am
sanders both trashing wall street because what wall street also does when you say it is it tells the voter, hey, they're part of the insider game. wall street, washington, they've been con flated as far as the political environment is concerned. the voters hear insider rigged game that doesn't benefit me. >> quickly, if you're running the clinton campaign right now, are you beginning to figure out your talking points to the public on why your candidate might have lost iowa and new hampshire? >> well, i don't think we're there yet. i thought the most fascinating development last night was that hillary clinton basically wrapped herself in president obama. i think we know her strategy which is to tell democrats, hey, did you like president obama? i'm the one who's going to do whatever it takes to carry his legacy. bernie sanders wants a big revolution. he doesn't think barack obama was good enough.
7:08 am
we'll talk about the republicans in just a minute. with front runners donald trump and ted cruz sharpening their attacks against each other, nbc national correspondent peter alexander keeping an eye on that. >> donald trump and ted cruz now neck and neck in iowa just two weeks until the caucuses. they're unleashing a series of attacks with trump's latest cruz missiles, if you will, not over policy, but personality. so much for playing nice for donald trump and ted cruz. >> he's a nasty guy. nobody likes him. nobody in congress likes him. nobody likes him anywhere once they get to know him. >> reporter: cruz is fighting back against trump and the new york tabloid after they condemn condemned the texas senator's attack on new york values. >> our friends in the media seems like they lit their hair on fire. what are these new york values of which you speak? i would say and the rest of america, people know exactly what that means. >> reporter: cruz's strategy,
7:09 am
him tweeting the billionaire's comments from meet the press in 1999, pro-choice and open to gay marriage. trump's argument, cruz is a hypocrite hypocrite, privately raising money in new york and getting loans from big banks. >> he's actually borrowing money and personally guaranteeing it illegal. >> reporter: one influential commentator warning trump, cut conservatives. like these tea party voters voicing their disapproval. >> say whatever you want. he didn't report bank loans. >> reporter: not missing a chance to get back at his chief critic.
7:10 am
charge of the elevator? >> i'm glad everyone is talking about my good friend raphael [ laughter ]. >> with trump and cruise grabbing all the headlines the rivals of course are fighting to get into the fray as well, marco rubio back and even john kasich getting a small boost with three new hampshire papers endorsing him as the best man for the job. let's bring chuck back in. if you go on the campaign trail and go to a donald trump event, the people in that room love to hear him skewer others. but it seems there is a line when it comes to ted cruz. explain the line. >> reporter: well, look, ted cruz and donald trump, they do share some of the same sort of supporters. you saw what peter was talking about.
7:11 am
it's a radio talk show host by the name of mark levine. donald trump in his war against political correctness, it has really been very popular with the talk radio crowd. but ted cruz, sort of a more strident confrontational conservative in washington, he's crowd. if they had a choice, they'd probably vote cruz over trump. that's the warning shot to trump. that's why this is a very precarious strategy for him. he could hurt himself as much as he helps himself by going after cruz. another major story this morning. a prisoner swap with iran to secure the freedom of four americans, three of them arriving in germany overnight. we have two reports for you this morning beginning with nbc's keir simmons in germany. good morning. >> reporter: one of the freed americans is already back there in the states. he was met by his mom at logan
7:12 am
three more spent the night here and we're told that they were in good spirits this morning. this was jason rezaian's first taste of freed. the the "washington post" reporter is now one of three at the u.s. medical facility in germany. >> it's spectacular news. can't wait to see him. >> reporter: his editors arrived to meet him. >> what did he say? >> he told us i feel a whole lot better than i did 48 hours ago. >> he sounds in high spirits and indicated that he wants human contact and wants to see other people. >> reporter: former marine's sister was flying in for a reunion. >> we have been on pins and needles, dying to see him. we haven't seen him in four and a half years. >> reporter: while he has spent three years locked up --.
7:13 am
just unbelievable. he's out of iranian soil and he's in germany. and after some medical attention, i am waiting to hear from him. >> reporter: an emotional 48 hours, the men emerging from an aircraft. >> we're united in welcoming home sons and husbands and brothers who have endured an absolute nightmare. >> reporter: merch americans releasing iranian prisoners in texas. one american didn't come home. the iranians say former fbi agent bob levinson is missing. his family says, we are devastated. a mystery surrounds a fifth american who was freed but chose not to leave iran. we don't know why. perhaps he didn't want the attention. we're told the others were waiting at the airport for a day
7:14 am
can leave here while they undergo psychological evaluation. >> let's get more on this from richard engel. what is the mood there today? >> reporter: this is an extraordinary time to be here in teheran. the mood is one of expectation and optimism. people are encouraged by the deal and they are looking forward to a better economy. the sanctions that have been put in place, now lifted, devastated the iranian economy. it was illegal for iranian people and businesses to move money in and out of the country. now banks can do that. iran couldn't legally trade its oil. now iran can, although oil clearly is not worth what it used to be. and tens of billions of dollars have been unfrozen. that money hasn't hit the
7:15 am
we were just in the bazaar area right in the heart of teheran, the commercial center of the city and people were already talking about stocking up their inventory. they're expecting more tourists to come. i was probably the only american. and people came up to me and said, we hope more morns come, we hope to do business. definitely a mood of hope. >> you pointed out logical reasons why the people there would be encouraged. what is the government telling its own people? >> reporter: the president gave a national address and he said that this was a victory for iran, a victory for the principles of the iranian revolution. he said it was also a win-win and all the countries around the world supported this deal with the exception of what he said were warmongers in the region, israel and what he called

. we're back, 8:14 with what's trending today. let us begin with a math equation that has stumped all of us here but captivated the internet. you want to grab your cal clarity right now. this equation begins with your shoe size.
8:12 am
you enter your shoe size, shouldn't be a half size. do a full size. plugging in some numbers, it gives you your age. prepare to be amazed. first you start with that shoe size. multiply it by five. do it for me on the calculator. so size 10 shoe. multiplied by five. add 50. add 50. multiply that number by 20. and now add 1,015. subtract your birth year. to me that is 1957. >> 1912? >> 1957. you should end up, 1058, that's my shoe size and i'm 58 years old. >> it worked. >> size 13 for me. >> i just messed this up. >> it said i'm like 84.
8:13 am
i'm a size 7 shoe. >> go back to the part where i give the instruction, guys? >> times five. >> seven times five plus 50. >> okay. >> multiply by 20. >> times 20. >> plus 1,015. and then subtract your birth year. >> 1970. >> and that's me! i'm 45. >> well done. >> that's mazing. >> yes, it's correct. you are. again, doesn't really work for anybody who's had a birthday already this year. >> okay. >> and who has one of those half size shoes. >> do we know where that came from? >> how is your shoe size part of the equation? you start off with your shoe size? >> clearly. >> okay. all right. we have something else for you to calculate in your mind, relationships are filled with milestones from your first kiss to tying the knot. but what time is the right time?
8:14 am

we are back now at 8:40 with jillian michaels. >> she's giving the world an inside look at her life on the new reality show just jillian on our sister network e. this is a decision not to be taken lightly, allowing your life to be exposed by putting cameras everywhere. >> my lawyer suggested it. i was telling him a story about
8:37 am
chickens in the mail and i had to go to the post office and pick them up and there was a chicken missing. he was like your life is absurd, you should do a show. as it kind of marinated i thought it would be hilarious. here we are. >> i'm obsessed with your kids. even though they're not the focus of the show, they are the stars. >> they are. the kids are quite honestly very used to being about cameras. they were on the cover of people magazine the first week they came into our lives. so they're not on it that much, but when they are, you can't help by being mesmerized by them because kids are hilarious. >> were there any ground rules? did you set anything off limits? >> no. book. we try to deal with on the show
8:38 am
are dealing with in their work, in their personal lives. it's funny, it's heart felt. hopefully you will be entertained. >> it is entertaining. you talk about the juggle of home and business, which is a big part of who you are. >> i think we all deal with that, though. you deal with that and every other person i talk to tried to find that perfect balance. i don't think we ever quite find it. it's all about the comedy of errors that occur as we struggle to do that. >> how many years were you on biggest loser? >> ten maybe. >> did people walk up to you on the street and add for advice about losing weight? >> they absolutely do. you see a little bit of that on the show. i love that. that's a real honor to feel like you were a part of someone's journey toward a better life. world. >> you're still willing to give
8:39 am
lose weight and getting healthy. >> i try. should i give a tip? listen to joy. that was a good tip. don't eat that stuff. >> one of the things i think is nice about this new show is i think people are used to seeing the hard driving, tougher side of you and i think on the show you're going to see the softer side of you. >> you see all sides. we all love a box and a lane and putting someone in a category. the reality is as human beings we're multifaceted. we make mistakes. we grow, we evolve. we can be soft, we can be hard. there's definitely some intense moments when it comes to my work that you see my business partner come in as the cleaning crew. there's a little of everything. >> we look forward to it. jillian, good to see you.
8:40 am
up next, how to hang, fold and store anything. >> sounds easier than it is. >> first this is today on nbc.
8:41 am
>> back now at 8:45. many of us have resolved to get organized and declutter in 2016. once you've started, what do you do with all that stuff? elizabeth mayhew is here to show us how to hang, fold and store everything. it sounds so easy, you think i can do that. but it can really be overwhelming. there's a trick to everything. >> once you get it set up, i promise you your life will be so much better because you will be able to get out the door faster. you're going to feel better about yourself. >> i told you i just did my closet.
8:42 am
>> my closet is organized. but it does take upkeep. every few months i go through and get rid of the things i'm not wearing. first, you've got to get rid of the wire hangers. they don't keep the shape of your clothes that well. and the plastic keeps in all of the chemicals they use at the dry cleaners. get rid of those and invest in good hangers. go to a place like the container store. i do love the huggable hanger. it's very thin. it's amazing how you will maximize your storage space. plus the velvet grips the clothes. you want to put clothes like jackets and blazers on a nice wooden hanger. and if you have a long storage space, the best way to store pants is from the cuff. it keeps the crease. no wrinkles. >> do you color coordinate? do you separate shirts skirts
8:43 am
>> long sleeve shirts here, short sleeve and separates below. color coordinating is really nice. think about a store you walk into. most stores are color coordinate coordinated for a reason. >> scarves and things like that. >> let's talk about folding. not everything gets hung. sweaters should be folded. they're going to lose their shape on a hanger. a great way to fold is use this flip fold. this is what they use in stores. one, two. as you fold this part up like that and then fold up and now lift your thirty. it's perfect. the other thing that i love with
8:44 am
than making a stack, put them in a drawer like this. most people do not know how to fold a fitted sheet. >> it's impossible. >> it's not impossibly. put all the elbows together and flip them in on itself. you have a nice l shape. put it down like that. now you've got a rectangle. and you can pretty much go anyway you want, crease it down. >> that's like a magic trick. >> the other thing about storing while you work on this situation, is once you have that folded, a great way to store your sheets is to put the entire set inside of a pillow case. that way the whole set stays together.
8:45 am
closet and you're good to go. stick your hands out. hold these. you're going to go inside. see the elbow to elbow. >> this is mystifying. >> now slip this elbow and put these inside of that one. i do feel like a magician. >> there's no way. this is what i do. >> lastly, i love to use these labeled canvas boxes especially for things that are out of season like bathing suits. you throw those in. and things that you're not using frequently you put up on the top shelf like bathing suits. and put the things you're using more frequently like hats and gloves and switch it out. i'm going to have you work on this. i promise you there's going to be a day when you can do this. >> thank you so much. and she's posted more tips on

8:50 am
>> throw that? >> all of it. >> what is in there. >> this is tapioca, quick acting tapioca powder, thingsen it up. >> gives it the consistency, red pepper flakes, corando, kir and a bit of cinnamon and then we're going to give it a little misaki, misaki like that, and then our chicken thighs. you want to help me grab those. >> you can go meatless. if you don't want to put chicken in here just forget it. >> absolutely. >> or put cauliflower inside or tofu, whatever you like. >> okay. >> want to grab your vegetable broth and put that over it and our job is done. >> that's it. >> it's as easy as that. >> that sits and slow cooks for how long? >> on lote eight to nine hours. >> if you're in a pinch for time, four to five hours on high. >> let's talk about what it looks like when it's finished. >> how good does this dish smell? >> the smell is uncybill, really is. >> so we've go the our
