steve staeger is live where this happened. >> reporter: it is an event that is on the mind of firefighterrest. they say the entire department is on edge. they are hoping for a smooth speedy recovery for their leader. it is a call becoming all too common on police radios. >> possible officer calling for help. >> reporter: a call for a first responder requiring first responders. >> report of a stabbing and they are saying the suspect got out of a fire chief's car and is walking eastbound. >> reporter: this time it was denver's fire chief. he was in an unmarked vehicle when a woman jumped in with a knife. >> a woman jumped in and stabbed him, the firefighter exited the vehicle, came back here to the fire station.

>> reporter: tade, a second generation firefighter, a 24 year veteran of the department got a helping hand from the very firefighters he leads hospital. >> he sustained injuries to his his right leg. >> reporter: the good news, his injuries were not life threatening, still, it left yet another group of first responders shaken up. >> the motive is unknown at this time. we have alerted all of our firefighters of the situation that occurred so they can be aware. >> reporter: and that woman marlene rodriguez is under investigation for assault with a weapon. and witnesses here on the seen were the ones who pointed her out to the police adele. >> so rodriguez was seen in a previous booking photo. does she have a previous record steve? >> reporter: she does. and we actually looked into that.

dating back for quite a while. >> all right, steve staeger, thank you. colorado's most notorious killer is being moved perhaps out of state. the department of corrections will not say where the mass murder convicted for the aurora theater shooter is going. it is part of an agreement that lets state prison systems send their inmates to other state and keeps the locations of some of them a secret. he was moved out of the state pen in canon city. then he was at saint carlos in pueblo. scott robinson says it was likely a threat to the new inmate. >> they don't pamper their inmates. they are subject to assaults and often murders without the doc taking action.

target of very substantial threats. >> reporter: the aurora theater shooting is serving life in prison, specifically 12 life sentences plus 3,318 years. the parents of a colorado state basketball player were killed this morning in a fire at their home in maryland. emanuel amogbo's parents died in the fire. her two-year-old twins died in the hospital. the team and the school will be there to help omogbo in any way they can during this tragedy. a family of a volunteer working for the dr. ben carson campaign, dr. 25-year-old brayden joplin died after a car accident in iowa. dr. carson sent out this photo

tomorrow, they will follow up on tips and interviews with friends and family. the clear creek county sheriffs office says the crews will search one more day for todd muscle nba. he was reported missing saturday after he didn't return from a hike. crews found evidence of an avalanche where he may have been hiking. cdot wants to begin a $1.2 billion makeover of i-70 in northeast denver. not everyone thinks that plan to widen the ten mile stretch of the interstate is a good idea. the colorado interest research group says it will be a waste of about $58 million. cdot plans to expand the interstate to ten lanes and build a cover over it. >> we need to spend every dollar we can bringing our transportation system into the 21st century. alternatives. >> if we don't do anything, it will take 65 minutes to travel 12 miles on i-70 by 2035.

the designs for the highway will improve local neighborhoods and describe it as a 100 year investment for the corridor. phase one would expand the highway to eight lanes with future plans for two more. a public comment period has were begun. the supreme court will have the final say of president obama's executive order designed to stop the deportation of 5 million people here illegally. >> reporter: the policy is referred to as deferred action of parents of americans. it has been a little more than two years since he offered them the chance to stay and work legally in the u.s. but the executive action was met with instant resistance from 26 mostly republican states all led by texas. the attorney general there successfully challenged the ruleing in court stating the president was being too overreaching with his policy. federal court agreed and shut

administration continues to appeal. now the supreme court has agreed to hear the final appeal and decide whether the executive action is constitutional. today, we spoke with a local immigration advocate who says the immigration community is cautiously optimistic. >> what we know at this point is that it is really unclear what the final vote will be. the court is most likely split with one or two justices that will make up their minds in the course of hearing the arguments. we feel that the president has a strong argument for why this is constitutional and totally within executive authority. >> reporter: bigger than dapa itself, our legal analyst says this could set a bigger precedent on how executive actions are considered in the future. the court has agreed to hear this case in april with a ruling coming down in june. >> there is the question about daca, similar program that provides legal status to young people brought here illegally

decisions made by the court in texas and the following court in new orleans does not have an effect on that program as far as this supreme court decision would, it is very likely the program would not be impacted. >> thank you jonathan. two pregnant women in illinois have tested positive for the zika virus. the virus blamed for birth defects spread by mosquitoes. women were warned not to travel to several latin american countries. both women in illinois had travel outside the u.s. the virus cannot be transferred from person to person. skiers versus boarders. the familiar rivalry boiled aspen. the aspen times reports a snow boarder who claims he was thrown off a lift by a skier. seth beckton says he fell 25 feet and landed unhurt in some soft snow. he had gotten into an argument with a skier over powder.

he heard the crash and a person screaming. he joined another witness to break the truck's window and pull the driver to safety. that driver is expected to be fine physically and in a lot of trouble legally. colorado's winter landscape became the perfect canvas condition step at a time. artist sonya henderson creates intricate snow drawings with snow shoes. they used a drone to capture the design's full scope which went on for miles. she wanted to mimic the flow of water. it took her an more than a dozen volunteers two days to complete. it is one of several snow drawings she has completed in colorado in recent years. she lives in northern california. in minnesota, they are freezing their pants off and putting them on display. temperatures have hovered at

one guy freezed his pants and the idea got legs. now the pants are all over the area. >> i brought them out in the wash after the spin cycle. took a couple of minutes to get them to freeze, when they were easy to stand up. >> the man who started the trend says actually it wasn't his idea. his brother has been doing this for years. he did not invent empty pants art. he just brought dropping frozen pants to the public. >> what is everybody wearing? about. >> i don't think we want to know. telluride, winter park, four inches. another system is on the move into the state. it will be here overnight into tomorrow morning and stick with us. wednesday, and push out by thursday. this means heavy snowfall in the high country. and more wild winds down here along the plains and maybe we will see a few light little flurries tomorrow afternoon and evening. at the airport, we are at 33 degrees. just 11 miles an hour wind. but it is making it feel a little cool. our temperature readings out here at about 32. brief little storm this morning. you remember that? a couple of flight flurries the afternoon. our storm system now pushing into parts of saint louis, chicago, bracing for just a little bit of snow too. now, all eyes on the west. this will be the next big wet weather maker not only for us, but this storm system will travel across to the eastern seaboard by the weekend and just be a monster. we are talking about some big time snowfall totals as well as out there. right now, it is still bringing

rockies. we are anticipating most of the moisture to move tomorrow night and into tomorrow. the evening. you can see a couple of light flurries coming down all the way south toward telluride. but the northern central mountains are the ones that will benefit the most from this winter weather advisories kick in at midnight tonight. evening. about five to ten inches feet. not only will you guys be seeing all the snow, but the gusty winds will be back in full force as well. you know what that means? blowing and drifting snow. vail pass might be a little tricky. keep that in mind. here's the deal. again, it is going to be overnight that we see that band move through. we are tracking a couple of light flurries out west. here it is 7:00 while that one wave winds down, we will be left with a good cloud deck across the city. stretching off to the eastern plains as well.

counties, you might have a little patchy fog. by lunchtime, do you have a meeting? we will be looking at some sunshine out there. things are looking good until the evening drive when we have a few little light flurries. again, by 10:00, 11:00 tomorrow evening our skies clear. that storm system starts to move out and strengthens a bit more before it meets up with the east coast. we will be talking about gusty winds overnight and tomorrow morning. 40 miles an hour speeds across the foothills. here it is 8:00, 9:00 tomorrow morning. it has not hit the i-25 corridor. that is when we have a better shot of seeing wind speeds in the 20 to 30 miles an hour range. tonight, overnight temperatures not too bad. tonight, here in denver, about 23. partly cloudy skies. should be cool, quiet and calm. sunrise coming at 7:17. it will be a cool start. but by the afternoon, similar to today.

good. we might have an isolated flurry here and there, but i wouldn't count on any accumulation. a little more sunshine to work with. going to be in the upper 40s , low 50s across the southeast corner of the state. nederland. handful and mid to upper 40s around the metro area. we will line those up along the i-25 corridor and northern colorado but it might feel a little cooler as the gusty winds are flying off the foothills. cooler temperatures for us thursday. the winds still picking up. we will be at 38. we hop up about 10 degrees friday. just flirting with that 50- degree mark. look, it is saturday. wow. fantastic weather and then by sunday, we are talking about the broncos game. we might have a few flurries in the mix. again, looks like more in the second half. and that storm system will stick with us monday. but we will start to warm things up by the middle of next week. >> you know what? >> hm? >> that is playoff football weather. it is what it is. if you are playing this time of

here, you want to be playing in that weather. broncos focus on that game, it could get them to superbowl 50, motor sports has a brand new look. new seats are in place at daytona international speedway. there are more than 100,000 seats. part of a $400 million renovation there. and when denver's local sprint cup team get to daytona next month, it will have a new look. it has been rumored that furniture row racing would have a new look. it is a bass pro shop as a major sponsor on the car. the first time we have seen the team's new toyota that replaces the chevy. martin truex jr. returns for 2016. bass pro shop will have its flame on the car nine of the season's biggest races. broncos country we know extends far beyond colorado.

horseshoes, hand grenades, and denver broncos football games? they have won several time this season in a game a touchdown or less. >> as we went through the season, we believed we were in the game. there in the fourth quarter, we can make the play that is the difference. we don't know who is going to make the play; but we got ourselves in that position. that has become a theme for us to grind and work. and just to keep ourselves in a position to be successful and close games. >> i think it was billy preston back in 1974 who first said nothing. but in peyton manning's case, nothing from nothing might just leave a championship ring. zilch. he has done nothing. and it is wonderful.

he's done nothing and it is spectacular. and if he can somehow muster up the courage to continue to do nothing, the broncos have a chance to win the superbowl. in the game-and-a-half peyton manning has played since returning from injury, he has thrown zero touchdown passes and zero interceptions with the exception of nuggets rookie emanuel moudiay. 500 yards. 539 touchdowns. he is most likely to help his team capture a title with goose eggs. it might be nice if he occasionally tossed one in the end zone between now and february 7, but he doesn't really need to and the best part is he finally understands that. >> our defense is just outstanding.
