he came to court to be formally charged for a shootout with police who were responding to a burglary. he is being held on $1 million bond and is recovering from a gunshot wound. he's better than in and out of jail for more than 15 years and has threatened prison staff. the sex offender who sexually assaulted a 3-year-old girl in the tunnels of a chuck e. cheese in engelwood has been sentenced to the max, 18 years. he was on the registry before the incident. he was prohibited from having contact with children. a candle light vigil near colorado springs will honor one of the 12 marines missing after two helicopters went down off the coast of hawaii. the coast guard suspended its search for the marines yesterday, their mission now being called recovery and salvage.

from 1971. a strict reading of the law means couples can't brew together, and don't even think about sharing a bottle with your friends! lawmakers from both parties signed onto a bill that would change the old wording and simply allow documents of legal age to home brew. supporters of the change admit the old language isn't actually causing trouble. >> have you ever had a customer come in and say they got busted for brewing with another family member? >> no. never. >> reporter: but much like this beer, in the law, clarity and smoothness can be virtues. house bill 1084 with its new wording gets the first public hearing thursday. a proposed state law could expand pot sales and possibly allow public smoking at special events. the bill's sponsor, dominic moreno, a democrat who represents commerce city says his bill creates special use permits for marijuana much like alcohol permits.

hikers, bikers, and runners. waterton canyon will have some closures. the lower portion, the main entrance and parking lot will be closed mondays through saturdays. crews are doing repairs at the high canal diversion dam in the south plat. the other part will be open through the colorado trail. the entire canyon will be open on sundays. the closures begin february 2nd and are expected to last through may 15th. rockies set a yesterday last year. the -- set a record last year. that beat 2014, the previous

rocky mountain national park's centennial celebration contributed to the boost. they're also looking at lower gas prices as a driver as well as all the people who live along the front range. january is national blood donor month chosen because winter months are when blood centers across the country are in desperate need of donations. they're divided into blood types and separated into plasma and rode blood cells. once they're tested for diseases, they are distributed to someone in need. the process takes a minimum of 48 hours. >> you'd, surprised there's not a lot of people that know how important it is. they don't really think about it. not until someone in their family goes through it. >> it takes about 3,000 donations each week to meet the needs of patients in colorado. the v.a.'s eastern

received a state of the art piece of technology to help injured veterans walk. a nonprofit that provides advanced medical technology to vets donated an exoskeleton today. sergeant rose was kind enough to show us how it works. he lost all movement from the chest down in afghanistan and uses a wheelchair. but using the exoskeleton gave him the ability to walk in therapy. >> i felt the image and felt the sting. you kind of get used to sitting in that chair all the time. to be able to stand up and look across the room is probably the hugest impact it has. a powerful experience for the first time. >> researchers say they'll be able to use it there for therapy. the suit is adjusted to different patients. they'll also be conducting research on how the skeleton can provide research options

mountains for most of the day. it's still bringing us some gusty winds around the i-25 corridor, 24 in centennial, once you move up in elevation, loveland pass, 40 miles per hour speeds. we had one disturbance move through earlier this morning. that's into parts of kansas. a second system dropping in from the northwest already beginning to bring us some widespread snowfall to the south of i-70. things starting to wind down. we should have a little more moving in overnight. some snow coming in, and around the hog backs up to the foothills, and winter park, a little light snow coming down. to the south, east, monument hill, callahan picking up on some light snow. and we might have a couple of tonight. but i wouldn't bet on any accumulation. the accumulation is gonna be up in the high country. mountains.

continue until 5:00 tomorrow morning. elkhead mountains, the san juans as well with an additional 2-4. so we'll time that out for you. things remain relatively quiet around here. eastern colorado, not too bad. we'll wake up to a few clouds color morning. 7:00, 8:00, a little light snow in the mountains. everything winds down by the afternoon. this storm system packs its bags, and it's on the move to the east coast. by 3:00, 4:00, we'll have some clearing. temperatures still remain cool tomorrow, and the winds will still be breezy. the big warmup is friday into saturday as high pressure takes over. we're keeping our eyes on this system. it's gonna be bringing some possibly severe weather to parts of the south as it lifts further up to the north and east, we're talking about big- time winter weather. dc, baltimore, anticipating upwards of 2 feet of fresh evening.

storm out there. possibly some coastal flooding as well. temperatures in the teens and 20s for eastern colorado. cooler in the mountains with single digits. tonight cloudy and windy out here. maybe an isolated shower or two tomorrow, a few morning clouds. temperatures stay in the 30s. some spots climbing to the low 40s with a little more afternoon sunshine. 20s around the foothills, then that big warmup arrives friday. friday and saturday, low to mid- 50s. loads of sunshine. and the next storm system moves in right in time for the broncos game. peyton manning will be nervous when he takes the field on sunday. and is that's good. means he's alive. broncs began practicing today. manning played for the conference final four time, three super bowls, countless other big games.
