this is 9news. >> it was very unusual, it was very surreal experience. >> with a bandaged hand and stitches in his leg, denver fire chief is back to work a day after a stabbing. we are learning about the woman police say hurt him in a random attack. new this morning a stock show connection that runs deeper than their love of horses even. we'll tell you about the unselfish acts of more than a dozen volunteers. and magnet mania returns. this morning more magnets to hand out. it starts in castle rock in about 30 minutes. >> all right. he know broncos fans are lining up. they are excited about that. good morning.

gary, corey, cheryl with you this morning. marty, and amelia earhart are here, too. >> marty, whatever flurries we have east of the metro area, they will go way? >> yes. i wish the wind would go away as quickly. it's calm here, but from really denver to the east it's extremely windy this morning. we are seeing a few clouds around here this morning. they are not as thick as yesterday. so you are going to see that sun and some sun glare as it comes up here in a little more than an hour and a half. for us today we have cloudy conditions over the east. a few flurries here and there. clearing skies have occurred southwestern colorado. it's gotten quite cold. single-digit readings around gunnison, alamosa. here is that light show we were talking about. going on from the nebraska border to weld and logan counties. some pretty good batches of snow just east of last chance in washington county. we could see probably a good quarter of an inch of snow out

36 through southern washington county. clouds around here early. boy, they are gone shortly after sunrise today. we'll go into the 40s this afternoon and we are gonna calm the wind down. it's windy again in the foothills, but we're gonna see that wind steadily decrease through the afternoon. here single-digits winds on the i-25 corridor. winds between 15 to 20 in the mountains of the front range later in the day today. amelia, we have had such a couple of nice mornings around here weather-wise. i hope we can keep it that way as far as the traffic goes this morning. definitely weather-wise. the weather is not hurting our drive at all. as for now a great wrap-up of an overnight cdot project. i-25 was shut down this morning. wrapped up 20 minutes early. so all lanes are getting through from the south side of town pushing into the denver tech center. across our side streets it's

at the intersection of mlk and krem aria. the intersection we are not worried about the traffic delays, but it was a active scene overnight. side streets at 21st and guilten dealing with a clean- up. westbounders around 20 minutes and 61 miles per hour this morning. >> we like all that green. lets keep it that way. she is accused of stabbing a denver fire chief as he was leaving fire station 1. vida urbonas is in the information center. vida, now the suspect is expected to appear in court. >> yes. good morning. that is marlene zazovic. she will appear in court this morning at 10:00. she has a lengthy criminal history. denver police say she jumped in the passenger seat when eric tate pulled out of the denver fire headquarters.

moment tuesday afternoon when she jumped into his passenger seat and stabbed him several times in the arms and legs in front of the station. that woman walked down colfax. witnesses pointed her out to denver police and she was arrested a short time later. tate was rushed to denver health. amazingly, chief tate returned to work yesterday. he was able to talk about his ordeal. >> i just came down to my car, pulled out right there and pulled up to the light and was on, making a phone call to our division chief of fire prevention. we were working through a fire prevention issue. last thing i remember telling him was hold on and then, obviously, that's when the stabbing occurred. >> the 42-year-old suspect is being held on investigation of aggravated assault. police believe this was a random attack. chief tate has sutures to his fingers and legs and he is expected to make a full recovery

>> that is good news. all right. thanks. 5:34. today a teenage girl accused of planning a deadly attack at mountain vista high school is expected to appear in court for a bond hearing. right now 16-year-old brooke higgins is in jail on $1 million bond. both higgins and a fellow student are charged as an adult. the two girls were arrested in december after a douglas county investigators uncovered the plot through a text to tip program. as the winds fan the flames of candles and fountains, friends and family gathered to keep the memory of a missing nar even alive. sergeant jeffrey sampler's mom is from mountain. he is one of 12 marines missing off the coast of hawaii. two marine helicopters crashed last week while on a training mission. she thanked everyone at the vigil.

so i just can't thank you enough. >> this is community. this is what it's all about. this is what the family is all about. >> crews called off the search for the 12 marines on tuesday after they spotted debris and four empty life rafts, but found no sign of the marines. 5:36 right now. marijuana shop owners can't get a loan from the banks, so they are looking for new ways to attract investors. coloradole, alaska, oregon, and washington are looking at making it easier for out of state investors to get in on the cannabis business. they want to be able to attract new investments before california voters have a chance to approve recreational marijuana this fall and compete for the money. repairs in waterton canyon might make you change your outdoor plans a little bit starting in february. now you only have full access to the area on sundays and hiking areas are going to be limited mondays through saturdays, we are told.

deteriorating high line canal diversion structure in the south platte river. everything should be done by may just in time for the summer hiking season. around here today temperatures in the lower 40s. the wind dying down. sunshine. we'll feel okay if you are out in the sun this afternoon. if you're in the shade, on the cool side. 30s in the foothills. well see the wind kicking up between 15 to 25 miles per hour through the day in the foothills. not a bad day around the metro area at all. we have that light snow over the plains. that will disappear this morning. the snow in mountain areas also falling apart. additional snow looking at less than an inch between now and the middle of the day today. things are going to slack off and clear out later in the day. still waiting for the ski areas to report new numbers this morning. as soon as i get them, i'll put them up and let you know how they are doing. >> all right. that's great. all right. 5:37 now.

western stock show there are hundreds of volunteers who all work closely to make sure everybody has a great time. their connection runs deep in the horse barn and they say it feels like family. this story proves that to be true. john lind has volunteered for a decade now. for the last two years he has been battling chronic kidney failure. he had a kidney transplant in december. his perfect match, his wife alene. but there were complications that caused him to lose that kidney, so he is now looking for another donor. meantime, he is back at the national western volunteering again, and word got around at the horse barn. josh bob and some other volunteers knew they needed to do something to help. >> i was like, well, i'll donate. we got to talking and i'm the right blood type. >> one by one they said we're on. we're in. let me know where i can go. and i just said wow. >> i have known john about ten years.

>> i am really thankful for that. >> josh bob is gonna go through more testing to make sure he can donate a kidney to his friend john. in all, more than a dozen other volunteers stepped up, said if you need, i will be a live kidney donor to make sure that you can be okay. >> what a great story. >> yeah. >> go josh bob. >> yeah. they want people to consider that. they say it's not as bad as you might imagine. his wife was out of the hospital in a short period of time. a lot of people need donations. so here is a way that you can save somebody's life. >> the healing process is short. the broncos and the patriots big match-up is about four days away, and you know that the fans would love nothing more than a

manning and tom brady. it's their 17th meeting and it could be their last. the two superstar quarterbacks took to the practice field yesterday ahead of sunday's afc championship game. they may have a long standing rivalry during their illustrious nfl careers, but the two of them have nothing but respect for each other. >> all i can say about, you know, tom brady is that he plays the position the way it's supposed to be played. he's extremely talented. he's a very hard worker. very competitive guy. and he just plays the position the right way. you do that, there is a reason you play for a long time. >> i think playing someone 17 times is pretty cool. especially someone as great as him. to play against, you know, peyton manning, you know you got to play 60 minutes and you're gonna be in for a tough game. >> all right. yeah, mutual admiration society there.

tsa is testing a new technology travel. pretty futuristic stuff. we will show you in a minute. first let's check that weather and traffic with marty and amelia. >> windy in the foothills and plains. fort morgan. right now we are looking at moderate air quality in the area. no current wood burning restrictions for us. looking ahead during today, cloudy this morning but skies clearing across the state with the sun coming up by late morning and early afternoon, moving into the 30s and 40s around here this afternoon. if you are headed to the mountains today, cloudy with some flurries this morning giving way to sun this afternoon with temperatures in the 20s and 30s. so after a couple of days fresh snow, it will be a good day to get away for midweek skiing. chain laws in the high country. traction laws as well. so it is gonna be a slick commute. right now chain laws from vail and silverthorne and over u.s. 6

welcome back 5:50. today new travel rules for europeans coming to the united states. the new visa requirements apply to travelers who are dual travelers of iran, iraq, sudan or syria or anyone who has visited those countries in the past five years. the homeland security department is expected to explain how it will phase in the new rules today. the goal is to make it harder for europeans who have fought for isis to get into the united states. and jfk international

using new technology to screen passengers arriving this. they started using facial recognition technology this week. the readers match a person's face to their passport and will be used to screen passengers arriving from countries where visas are waived. the technology will also be used to randomly check on returning u.s. citizens. the customs and border commissioners says it will help reduce human error. light snow continues over the eastern plains for us this morning. again the gusty winds as well. that's all part of the back side of this system that moved through overnight. it's gonna be slightly cooler here. we are seeing light snow over the plains. it's not gonna amount to very much. but because of the wind, we do have some limited visibility in some of the highways. if you are out driving around, especially logan, morgan and washington counties, we are gonna see some limited visibility this morning. a couple of days of dry weather coming up.

today we, gonna see a lot of sun through the area. coldest around the gunnison river and san luis valley. the combination of wind and clouds have kept temperatures up. we clear out during the morning. corridor. we will keep it 15 to 25 in the foothills. 40s down low. 30s and low 40s in the foothills today. mountain snow is now tapering off. light snow tapers off over the plains. we are going to keep that wind well into the afternoon for the north. 40s here. 20s and 30s for the mountains and west. touching right about 40 to sunshine. less wind. low wind tonight. temperatures in the 20s. then two really nice days coming up. dry and warm. sunday's not a bad day either. in the morning it's fine. light snow develops in the afternoon. still looks like around an inch or less by the end of the day sunday.

hang around with us with little additional accumulation. you know, amelia, after several mornings like this where it's dry and mild, monday morning might come as a shock with some snow on the ground. >> you know, it's sure to slow us down, especially towards the second half of the drive right now, enjoy your thursday morning commute. we are starting to see the very first indication of our southbound slowdown out of thornton and northglenn. very standard. there it is. southbound piles up around 104th to u.s. 36 approaching i-70, though, things lighten up. no major issues across your downtown commute. things are cleared up on the side streets at 21st and gilpin after an overnight crash. word of a possible accident at 56th avenue and tower road. busy intersection. closer into the city there is still clean-up underway after a car crashed into a tree at mlk and krameria street. four people taken to the hospital. two had serious injuries. watch for the clean-up there. we are off to a good freeway

watch for that blowing snow out to the west site. >> all right. thank you much. it is 5:53 right now. as we have been mentioning this week, january 28 marks a very and for this country. the space shuttle challenger exploded after lift-off from cape canaveral florida killing shocking the country. there were many colorado connections, including cu's involvement in the mission and six elementary school students from boulder county there to watch the launch. we are going to look back on this historic event in a 30-minute special this coming weekend. please join us for 30 years and 73 seconds. the challenger disaster. it will run saturday at 6 p.m. on channel 9, sunday at 9:30 p.m. on channel 20. we hope to bring back some
