this is great. that would tie him with brett favre. he still has a ways to go to catch up to tom brady. brady has 22 total playoff victories. >> as usual, it will come down to what the defense can do. with the broncos, that's the way it's gone all season. the broncos defense is the best in the league. wade phillips earned his share of the nfl assistant coach of the year award. well deserved. denver had the top ranked defense for the first time in franchise history. he's so humble. he says, you know what, i just ride on that train. >> i can he has a big part to play. >> agreed. >> so tom brady, they have to get to the quarterback. perhaps the most important key for the broncos is stopping the other worldly tight end, rob gronkowski. in nine career playoff games, he has 8 touchdowns. two of them came last week against kansas city.
6:06 am
those are the most by a tight end in the postseason. vernon davis had seven. >> interesting. so broncos fans may not think a lot about the visitor's locker room, but it holds a tribute to generations of football greatness. it's a treasure not a lot of people know about. we got a peek inside so we could show you. >> it's very unique we have so much history right here in our locker room at sports authority field. >> in the visitor locker room, an evergrowing piece of art sketched out by black sharpies. generations of greatness. >> a place where respect for the game and appreciation of its talents, no matter the team, is on display.

six denver deputies will not be facing criminal charges for the death of a jail inmate. the family of that inmate is not happy about the decision. we're going to be hearing from them coming up. >> before we get to the broncos conch, we want to head back out to sports authority field to talk about today's game and get a look at weather and traffic. marty, we're going to start with you. around here in the backyard, we're looking at clear conditions and calm conditions here throughout the area. it's going to be a really good looking friday for you this afternoon. again, light wind here in the area. good looking friday. warm day for you here. air quality, good enough that we don't have any wood burning restrictions. i want the take you to east coast. washington, dc is shutting down weather today. at noon, good thing.
6:25 am
dry around here. the big storm is moving through southern virginia and the carolinas. it's going to slam d.c., baltimore, philadelphia, and to a lesser extent the new york city area tonight and through the day tomorrow. a few high clouds here and there, probably some ice fog going on where it's 9 below zero right now. the plains, high clouds here and there. teens and 20s to near 30 degrees already here for the front range. we start in the 20s. finish in the low 50s around here today. so it's been friday lights so far, amelia, with the one glaring exception of a big hole that developed in one of our streets. >> a water main break caused a sink hole at 8th and delaware. as we flew over just a few moments ago, one westbound lane is getting through. you can see it there. cleanup is going to continue. repairs throughout the morning drive and more likely through the rest of the afternoon.

crews got out quickly. they're repairing it as fast as they can. let's get out to our graphic. this will help you access over to the side streets. head southbound to get back down to your sixth avenue entrance. 8th avenue a popular route to access six. 225 and parker. the sun could factor in the eastbound routes. i just got off the phones. i want you to know while the eastbound lanes of i-70 are still closed at idaho springs. the westbound lanes at 70 have just reopened after a bridge demolition overnight. some progress there. at mile high on an afc championship weekend, the eve of that weekend. >> the eve of that weekend, yeah, fans are getting excited. it's orange friday. going to be a pep rally downtown. we're out here last friday and
6:27 am
that was kind of good luck, right? >> we had to come back. we do not want to be the reason for anything happening. broncos taking on number two seed. new england patriots for the afc championship game. and these two teams have matched up quite a few times. 46 types in all, actually. and the denver broncos are leading in that series, 26-20. that includes four meetings in the playoffs. denver has won three of those. all of them at home. if the broncos do win on sunday, we would like to think when they win on sunday, they clench their 8'd super bowl birth. >> you know, if you listen to the national sports media, this game is brady against manning, you know. that's what they're saying. the rest of those guys, i don't know. anyway, we decided we would take a look at that rivalry because they have played each other 17 times. so that's pretty impressive.
6:28 am
6:29 am
mcenroe, lemu, and magic-bird. tonya harding and nancy kerrigan. it produced a main course of tiger woods versus phil mickelson. and now, manning-brady, the greatest rivalry of the 2010s. >> it does not end. >> that's so true. >> i love it. >> so one of my favorite rivalry of all times is cheryl preheim and cori rhodes. >> cheryl has it. so there are coaching connections between the broncos and patriots. bill belichick was assistant coach for the broncos in 1978. the most notable, of course, is the new england offensive coordinator josh mcdaniels.
6:30 am
from 2009 to 2010. he went 11-17 during his tenure and was fired after week 13 of his second season. today we're celebrating orange friday in the city of denver. mayor hancock wants everyone to wear orange in support of the game. there's going to be a concert in larimer square. we want you to come out and support the team. there will be former broncos and miles and there will be trophies out on display. gary? >> it will be kind of cool. i'm looking forward to that. >> fans who plan on driving to the game on sunday, to park here at the stadium, you have to be a season ticket holder, except there are a few single game spaces that are available. they go between 20 and 30 bucks. if you want to shell out the money, they sell out two hours before kickoff.
6:31 am
all the parking lots around the stadium open at 8:00 on sunday. you can get plenty of tailgating in. then there's the aquarium, campus, those run anywhere from 10-15 bucks. and amelia, parking isn't the only thing people need to prepare for themselves. it's going to be a crazy traffic day on sunday, i imagine. >> it's going to be a crazy traffic day. we have identified nine different ways for you to get to the game. for you to find the full resource guide, 9news.com, it's up on the home page. 9 ways to get out to the field. our broncos drive is a great option. they have shuttle services from a lot of the parking lots getting down to the stadium itself. no street parking is approved. make sure lots are approved by the city. that way you know your money is going to the right place. the broncos bike valet is a freeway.
6:32 am
it's totally safe. all of these options are up on our website. just make sure you get to and from the game safely. >> all right. much. so we've been talking about the big storm that's headed to the eastern part of the country. boston is said to be on the northern edge of the storm, just getting a couple inches of snow. the patriots have been asked all week, hey, is this going to attract your travel plans? they're traveling in tonight for the afc title game. they're going to spend tonight and all day saturday getting ready for sunday's game. boston is not seeing a lot of snow. marty, you explained that's going to happen a little further south. now, the nation's capital, they wish they were in the position of the folks in boston. >> true. if it were the redskins, they're in the nfc, but they would have left yesterday to get away from this.
6:33 am
moving up to washington, dc during the afternoon today. boston is going to be out of this thing until tomorrow. only an inch or two at that. early tomorrow morning, still no snow in boston. they're on the northern extent of this storm by late tomorrow night into noon sunday. that's when we'll see this thing begin to wrap up. huge, huge snow amounts in the d.c. area. 18-30-inches of snow with up to 60 mile-per-hour winds. a foot and a half around philadelphia. tapering to around 6-10-inches in new york. boston, windy, yeah, but they will only see an inch or two of snow out out of this particular storm. the farther south you go, the worst it gets. >> what a mess. marty, thanks so much. we'll have more on flight cancellations coming up later. at 6:40. the family of a denver jail inmate who died while in custody is not give up their fight. this is after prosecutors have decided not to criminally charge six deputies. colleen ferreira has been following this story for us.
6:34 am
family says they're really angry about this decision. >> they sure are. greg, they held a news conference yesterday right after watching the video from the jail for the first time. the video gives us a clear idea of what happened on that day, november 11th. in this video, you can clearly see marshall and the deputy. it was captured four days after marshall had been arrested. he said the deputies used necessary force to restrain him and that's why he decided to involved. now, a medical examiner said marshall suffered a psychotic episode, suffered a heart attack, and choked on his own vomit. the medical examiner could not directly pinpoint whether the actions of the deputies caused his death or if he was suffering from some type of medical problem. >> the marshall family attorney has called for a federal investigation into all of this. >> mr. morrissey, of course, the district attorney for denver, has never held denver law enforcement accountable for any killing that occurred at
6:35 am
and this is one more example of the refusal to prosecute. >> you have to understand something about the lawyers we're talking about. their job is just beginning. their job is about getting as much money as they possibly can. that's not what my job is. my job is to ethically apply the law to somebody that's being accused of a crime. if i can prove they committed it, we'll bring the charges. if i can't, i won't bring the charges. >> so marshall's family took him off life support on november 20 november 20th. that was nine days after the video you saw was taken in the jail. marshall's niece says this was a brutal murder. the district attorney says it's a tragedy but says the amount of force used was justified. >> we'll see. the marines that were in the two helicopters last week
6:36 am
they have not been able to find these marines. last thursday, someone say they saw two aircraft flying and then a huge fireball. several life rafts from the helicopters were also found. well, who knew a simple magnet could bring excitement to the area. i've seen them popping up all over the place, decorating the state before the big game on sunday. you still have a chance to get one. coming up, we're going to tell you where you can find one this
6:38 am
stretch. southbound those are loaded up, 76 split. again, you will tap the brakes as you head toward alameda and santa fe. an easy start is still definitely the norm across the entire southside. c470, 225, and i-25 are clear of any major issues the morning. other problems that have popped up in our drive, a sink hole, we'll have more pictures of that coming up. your alternate, 11th to get around it and up to the north side, we're hear hearing about a new crash near the i-25 split. we'll have details coming up on that as well. >> thank you. we're live here at sports authority field. we're in the ring of fame week. broncos analyst is here to stop by. ron, thanks for coming in. i always love when you're here.
6:39 am
>> thanks for bringing me inside. these are great seats. >> pretty good. >> when fans steal these seats, they're going to be watching a three-point underdog. sometimes it's good to be the underdog. >> i think it's good. you have the broncos at home. they're the number one seed. i know it's like what c.j. anderson said yesterday, really in we're the underdogs? we earned the right to get here. i think they came out tight last week, maybe not ready to play. to be different. i think they will be really letting it fly this week. i think that's a better place to be for a football team. >> there was a lot of things that we needed to work on coming into this sunday. they are. i think there's three things the broncos have to do much sunday. here you go.
6:40 am
they didn't run it last sunday well enough. you must run the ball. if they wait for peyton manning to make plays, he's not going to make a bunch of plays. there's tom brady. you must hit tom brady, knock him off his spot, and make him throw before he wants to. that doesn't mean you have to sack him all the time, but you have to hit him. the third thing the broncos must do. if you watch that game, you can see it. if they don't catch the footballs better than they did last sunday, i guarantee you they will lose the football game. they dropped seven throws. it's the afc championship game. you have to be better for that. >> and gronkowski does not drop balls. >> gronkowski scares you. yards after catch, that's where gronkowski is so good. he pushes off. chris harrison, the only thing you can do to tackle him at the knees.
6:41 am
the other guy that concerns me is yule yan edelman. he -- julian edelman. one stat stuck with me. he's been hurt a lot. in the last 23 games he's played for the patriots, the patriots are 22-1. >> he's a weapon, that's for sure. >> he's a 3rd down weapon. he runs the underneath routes and you can't stop them. >> ron is going to stick with us over at the 7:00 hour. we'll talk more about broncos football. >> sounds good. >> i know this man has a magnet on his car. there are a lot of people wanting them on their cars this morning. vita, are there any left? >> yay. we have a steady stream of people coming through. we have the bronco cheerleaders over there. we started out with a long line, and that came through. then in and out, we have a wave of people coming through.
6:42 am
tell me about reichen? >> he's a retriever. he's orange, of course. so i had to bring him to support the broncos. he has his manning jersey on. >> of course we have a super fan over here. this is dominant orange. tell me about your car. >> i had the vinyl stickers made. i'm a big bronco fan, so i just like to do this for fun, just a the team. >> tell me about this. us. >> i bought these the day after we lost to the raiders, which was 2.5 months before we con super bowl xxxii. i was confident and i will probably be sporting super bowl 50 plates on my car this year. >> come on through.
6:43 am
so another line forming. i want to let you know there are some other giveaways this morning. we have one in golden today. can everybody here do a quick happy birthday, greg. >> happy birthday, greg. >> happy birthday. >> very nice. thank you very much. don't we? >> tonight i'm a little bias, but i think you can catch one of the most exciting events right here on news. it's a junior auction. we're going to air it live on 9news. most of the money earned will go to pay for the college education of these young people. denver fans are the best fans.
6:45 am
tons of sun out here today once it comes out. skies are mainly clear. we have wispy clouds here and there. we have more moisture moving woo the coast of california. this is a storm system slamming the sierras, dumping a lot of rain in northern california. we'll move into western colorado late tomorrow night. that leaves us with dry conditions now and dry conditions throughout the day because it's clear and calm. a lot of the valleys throughout central and western colorado
6:46 am
the valley. the gunnison area also up along the river and, of course, in grand county, not nearly as cold here in eastern colorado. sun stays with us during the day. low to mid-50s here. colorado. lovely day with 40s and 50s. few clouds playing hide-and- seek with the northeast corner of the state. it is a lot of sun. mid-30s throughout the mountains, and most of the west could get close to 40-45- degrees. cortez will be in the low 40s and northeastern colorado. warmer than here and that will extend all the way into the southeast. sunshine today, very little wind. good looking day, 53 today, dropping down into the mid-20s tonight. warmer tomorrow. a few clouds but warmer tomorrow. sunday, 45 in the morning. and then in the afternoon,
6:47 am
