chief eric tade earlier this week. 42-year-old marlene rodriguez is charged with attempted second degree murder and first degree assault. the attack happened tuesday near colfax and speer. rodriguez is accused of getting into the passenger seat of the chief's vehicle and attacking him with a knife. they had never met each other. her son tells us she has some mental health issues. she'll be in court next week. lakewood police think they found the man who was dressed in a santa suit when he stabbed a passenger on an rtd bus on christmas eve. the 32-year-old man was arrested thursday. when lakewood police found him, they issued a warrant in connection with the stabbing. he had left his cell phone on the bus, but couldn't find him because he was homeless. the 31-year-old stabbing victim survived. . 5 million americans face the same fight at broncos owner pat bowlen. they have alzheimers. a new head indication provides hope for them and their families.

hope. a new experimental treatment is showing it can stop the progression of alzheimers and >> good. i think most scientists assume that the changes in alzheimers were irreversible and the best you could expect in a new drug same. i don't think people actually expect that we would see >> right, very good. >> reporter: janet is one of 2000 people around the world participating in the trial. she and her husband are seeing a change. >> i don't think she did as well, even four or five months ago, truthfully. >> reporter: this is what a normal brain cell looks like. for someone with alzheimers, proteins tangle around the cells, creating a sticky clump. that will eventually kill off the cell. but the new drug still in clinical trials has shown to prevent the clump from happening in the first place, therefore stopping the progression of the disease. >> all right. very good. >> reporter: it's not a cure, but a treatment that could help

sounds like a freight train coming through. the difference this time was the stream flows towards this bank, so all of it piled up in greater height on this side, with the lesser buildup on the other side. it got up close to those cabins over there and there was some flat lander tourists that came running out of the cabins. they were pretty excited. it didn't get to them because it. but it's one of the most impressive things i've ever seen of all the ice flows that have come through. >> flatlanders got excited. i would be, too. spar is glad he lives on higher ground. the flood watch has been lifted downstream from his home. denver police department added 32 new police officers to its ranks today. they finished up the academy phase of their training and they were sworn in this morning at the denver police academy. hundreds of family members came out to support the new officers and for some of the new graduates, it's a family business. public servants, so a lot of law enforcement and firefighters. so just something that i just wanted to follow suit with and they actually all work for denver. it's a family tradition. my dad is ecstatic. he pinned my badge today. it was awesome, honestly the best feeling ever. >> now that they have officially graduated those new denver police officers will begin their training in the field. a weekend that starts out with highs in the 50s could end with snow during the broncos game on sunday. >> also ahead, some early tailgating at children's hospital colorado. >> and tee time for the stock

send them to the super bowl. most broncos fans will not actually be inside mile-high on sunday. the fans who work at children's hospital colorado decided to improvise for the kids. they set up an early tailgating today at the hospital. patients and staff headed outdoors to get their party on. they had everything from a broncos-themed fire truck to food trucks out there, music blasting. organizers say it was a nice break from the daily routine. >> being able to celebrate the broncos and our partnership, it's a festive atmosphere for everyone and kind of just brings a sense of optimism and fun for all of us. >> just a nice day to get outdoors, too. not every day you can have popsicles at a party outside in january. a tradition that goes back decades to grand champion steer from the stock show takes a stroll down the red carpet and into the brown palace hotel and spa in downtown denver. patrons there take selfies with the steer. this is the 71st year the brown

. meteorologist danielle grant here in the backyard. we are less than 48 hours till the big broncos game. it's all anyone can talk about, not only here around denver, but also in the highcountry. they are showing off broncos pride out there at crested butte today. chris siegel capturing that fun photo of the fans, and also at the loveland ski area. dustin schafer out there showcasing his broncos pride, along the continental divide. oh, it was a great day on the slopes, especially if you were in orange. what are you going to wear on sunday if you're heading out to the game or doing some tailgating?

dress in layers. i think it should be dry early on, if you're doing some tailgating. temperatures will be peaking in the low 40s and then about the second half is when we'll start to see a few flurries push in and the winds are also going to kick up, cooling us off quite a bit. tonight, the city is all lit up in orange and blue after a beautiful afternoon. look at that, 52 degrees out at the airport. it was a little warmer downtown. handful of 50s across southeastern colorado, with the 30s primarily up in the mountains. right now, 36 out at the airport, winds out of the south 11 miles per hour. not too bad. we are hanging on to partly cloudy skies out there. here in the 9news backyard, temperatures coming at us around 44 degrees. again, we'll slowly be cooling off tonight. nice break, though, from all of that winter weather. it's going to feel more like spring tomorrow. high pressure entrenched across the area and that's been bringing these quiet and mild conditions. i'll zoom out and you can see the other big story. that's this monster of a storm system pulling in across the

to parts of north carolina. heavy snowfall throughout the i- 95 corridor. dc, up through new york right now, and we're also anticipating a little coastal flooding with this storm system as well. we have a slew of winter storm watches, warnings, advisories, and even a blizzard warning for the dc-baltimore area, stretching up toward new york just because we're not only anticipating some huge totals as far as the snow goes, but the winds will be wicked out there, too. some spots around dc, baltimore, 60 mile-per-hour gusts. around 50 miles per hour speeds for new york, where they could see 8 to 16 inches. but again, the heart of the storm system really stays in the nation's capital. while this storm system wreaks havoc this weekend, all eyes out to the pacific northwest, where our next system is coming in from. it's going to be relatively weak, positioning itself across southeastern colorado by sunday evening. we'll see some of those flurries pushing into the denver metro area just a couple hours before then. again, it's a tale of two seasons. tomorrow, feeling like spring.

here we are, 8:00 tomorrow. we'll have partly cloudy skies to kick off our morning. but again, warmer temperatures with light southwesterly winds. by 5:00, clouds begin to increase across the western slope. by 10:00 p.m., couple of light snow flurries making their way across the northwestern corner of the state. these are just preliminary numbers for you, just to give you an idea. i'm thinking 1 to 3 around the metro area through monday morning, maybe an inch on sunday with a few more coming in overnight. 2 to 5, foothills and the highcountry picking up several inches of new snow as the system marches into the state. tonight, a comfortable one with numbers only dipping down to the 20s here in eastern colorado, teens and a few single digits up in the mountains. sunrise coming at us at 7:15 tomorrow morning. overnight lows bottoming out to the 20s. we'll be at 57 by tomorrow afternoon, partly cloudy skies.

we'll be in the 60s burlington, limon, colorado springs. further south toward springfield, still a nice day in the highcountry. it's going to be a blue bird day, after a week full of so much powder up there. 51 for longmont. 40s for the foothills. not a shabby january afternoon, if you ask me. low 50s in longmont, as well as lyons and fort collins. the cool-off arrives as the storm system pulls in sunday afternoon. we'll see it on monday, with readings only make it into the 30s. 1 to 3 inches around the metro area. this storm system moves out monday afternoon and into the evening. then we clear out and warm up big time from there. . this one's for john. the most memorable sports sentence ever uttered here in colorado. and many have wondered if this team will try to win one for their quarterback as well. most believe this season will be peyton manning's last season. you got to believe it's his

finishing on top would be a great way to go out. >> he's one of those guys that i want him to win another super bowl. kubiak had a saying that they are on the board, that if you play for the person next to you more than you play for yourself, the outcome is greater. i think that everybody on this team, we have a lot of camaraderie on this team and we're playing for each other, playing for the city of denver and hopefully get the job done. >> want a super bowl for everybody, for denver. i mean, a lot -- this game means so much to me just because i didn't get to play in the game last time. not being able to play in the afc championship, it means the most to me since i missed the last one. they are here! patriots arrived in denver a little earlier than planned. their plain touched down at exactly 5:12 at dia, with the monster snowstorm bearing down on the east coast and a 1:00 kickoff, moving things up a bit. have i mentioned how fired up i
