feel badly for one player for new england, it would have to be stephen -- he missed the extra point. he had gotten 523 extra points before today. if he had made that -- it's 5:00 straight up. so 9news begins right now. there's peyton manning coming in now. what a game peyton manning had today. even ran for a few yards, which really elicited some surprise from his fellow players on the bench. you'll be hearing from him, too. there's so many factors in this game, when you talk about the missed kick. it would have gotten him within one point after that final touchdown, which would have been easier to make than that 2- point conversion. >> instead of forcing them to

on 9news at 5:00 and not a big football fan, broncos are going to the super bowl, just fyi. broncos fans are streaming out of mile high and christine noel is standing by to talk to them. christine. >> reporter: obviously a lot of excitement. you know when you stand out in the parking lot and hear that collective roar inside the stadium, all of that is heading out into the parking lot. bronco fans unruly, very excited. [ cheering ] >> reporter: the broncos are going to the super bowl. i'm not sure if you guys can hear me. i do want to talk to these fine people here quick. sam, chuck, carrie and the crew. let's talk about owen daniels, scored two touchdowns. broncos came out ready to win. >> incredible. great game watching them perform like they should all year. manning was great. incredible. broncos super bowl. >> reporter: defense is good.
5:02 pm
that's what we needed. >> yeah. >> reporter: you said you just got done crying. >> i cried. i needed this one. i have been here for so many years. i have waited and waited for the super bowl with peyton manning. i am so happy. >> reporter: right now we are going to find out in a little while who the matchup will be, the broncos and either the cardinals or panthers. chuck, who do you think would have the best matchup with the broncos? >> i don't think it matters, because i think the broncos can take care of either one of them and will come out on top. >> reporter: all right, guys, go broncos. [ cheering ] >> reporter: we're stoked. back to you guys. >> thanks a lot. when you look at this team, a lot of it is about momentum and peaking at a certain time, and you have to wonder if they kind of hit it right on as far as timing goes. >> and they've got a relatively fresh quarterback, because peyt sat the entire middle of the season.
5:03 pm
was operating out there, he was making all his throws. i think he only had one long pass to sanders. it appeared all the throws were in the arsenal. he was willing to run. there was a bootleg pass that caught the patriots unawares earlier in the game. he was willing to move around in that way. i think we're getting peyton at the best of this stage of his career. >> i agree. >> not two years, five years ago peyton, but goods he's looked -- as good as he's looked this season. >> maybe the time is now. these are the nfl sanctioned t- shirts and the hat, too. officially licensed products from the nfl. >> the hat's got some bling to it. >> i like the bling. >> i'll show the back.
5:04 pm
>> how about that. and made locally. very cool. they're not sending the work overseas. >> 360 an hour for 12 hours straight is what they can come up with. i'm not good at math, but we have two of them, so we're happy. >> you folded yours up nicely. we're standing by for the locker room. we're going to talk to coach kubiak first and then the broncos' players as soon as everybody is showered and at least has a towel around them. fcc rules. and we would expect peyton manning would step to podium. he likes to talk there rather than the locker room. two minutes for coach kubiak we were just told. >> he's going to be one happy guy, too. if you look at the statistics and the kind of quarterback, the quarterback matchup, because that was the whole thing leading up to this game
5:05 pm
>> number 17. >> if you look at the stats and numbers, wow, tom brady kind of outplayed peyton manning, if you look at completions, attempts and total yardage. no interpretations for manning. and tom brady, 27 of 56 for 310 yards. >> six times. >> two interceptions. >> and there's a pretty good chance peyton manning will get outplayed by palmer or newton in the super bowl, and the broncos don't need him to outplay the other quarterback to win the game. that is the luxury this team has, because the defense is so dominant. if peyton is competent and the defense is spectacular, we could be super bowl l champions. victoria sanchez was watching with fans at the theater. that had to be one heck of a party. >> reporter: it was amazing, kyle. it's pretty much cleared out. but the big screen showed what everybody wanted to see, and
5:06 pm
champs and going to super bowl l. people were not disappointed with peyton manning's performance today. as you can see -- >> do you know what the best play of the game was peyton rushing for the touchdown. might have been 3rd down, didn't matter. that's an old bear what wants it. he achieveed it. go broncos, go peyton! >> look like we lost victoria's feed there. rod mackey is standing by at the stadium to get the postgame rolling. rod. >> reporter: thank you very much. here with head coach gary kubiak. wow, what a -- i don't think i've ever seen a football game as exciting as that. probably too exciting from your perspective. you got the win at the end. >> two really good teams going at it. both teams playing great defense all day long. we tried to hold true to who we are. grind away. i think we played as good a
5:07 pm
play. >> reporter: we were talking to some of the offensive guys on the field, and they kept saying i don't think i've ever seen tom brady be stopped so many times. >> we had a couple of chances in the fourth quarter to make it easier on ourselves. we hung in there. obviously defense stood up and made the plays. >> reporter: looked like several times, gronk played out of his mind, but on the 2-point conversion, take me through your emotions. >> sometimes i don't watch next. talking offensively what we thought we had to do to win the game in overtime. we called a timeout because we had a couple of guys come off the field. demarcus come off the field. stepped up and got it done. >> reporter: how to do ghoul for peyton knowing he's near never been here.
5:08 pm
with our team last night. he talked to the team. as far as 18, we've had interesting meetings this yearly. i couldn't be more proud of the way he's stepped up and taken this team back over and he's a tremendous leader. >> reporter: thank you, coach. one more. >> sounds good to me. >> reporter: we'll send it back into the locker room now. chris and aaron. >> thank you so much. championship. you're headed to the super bowl. >> we put in so much work this whole offseason and then this season. i'm just so proud of our team. we stuck together all year. regardless of when we had times when we could clash, offense and defense whatever, but we stayed together as a team and that's all that mattered. >> reporter: how about the defensive effort tonight, holding brady, gronk, they were healthy coming in here and you held them under 20. >> we lost a lot of players and
5:09 pm
and we lost more guys than they had out there. to be able to finish that game, to play tough defense the way we did, that is huge. >> reporter: so much talk this year about the longer extra point. are you surprised that it had such a big impact at the afc championship? >> no, not surprised. we know defense wins championships, all week everybody counted us out. they said i couldn't cover edle men or their receivers or tight end or whatever. held them to, how many points they had? 18points. number one offense in the league and we shut them down. >> reporter: you sound a little angry about it. >> yeah, we definitely were angry. everyone said we couldn't do it. we wanted to prove we could. they still made a couple of plays, but at the end of the day they only had 18 points. >> reporter: thank you, chris. rob, over to you -- rod, over to you. >> reporter: here are brandon marshall.
5:10 pm
and know what an impact you had in this game? >> it's amazing, to go back and know i played a significant role in hopefully us winning this game. it's special. >> reporter: all season long it seemed to come down to great plays by the defense. gronk had gone crazy. take me through the final moments, 2-point conversion where you got it done. you held strong and had a lot of chances to hold them. >> we never waiver. we always stay strong. we believe. everybody plays hard. we play hard, we play fast, we play physical four quarters. that's how we train. what blowout did we have this year? maybe the packers game, that's it. that's it. we are used to playing close games. this is what we do. we're used to playing games down to the wire. we always prevail, which we did today. >> reporter: you weren't supposed to win this game or the super bowl either. >> all i know is all them
5:11 pm
going to get blown out, they that matters. i think on any given day, our best is better than their best. >> reporter: how did this feel, the celebration, confetti? how did that feel out there? >> that was amazing, man. my favorite word is sensation alm it felt sensational. >> reporter: one more win, good >> thank you. >> reporter: guys, back to you. >> back out here in the south end zone with chad brown, i'm drew soicher following a 20-18 broncos victory over the patriots in the afc championship game. on the pa here, 77,000 fans are filing out. we heard happy by pharrell, everything but we are the champions, which is probably what they should play.
5:12 pm
>> the ultimate prize would be the super bowl. >> we have two weeks. >> i love the way that these broncos are really finding motivation. everyone doubted. no one thought we could cover. i don't think that was quite the case, but they drew a lot of inspiration. >> a key -- [ background crowd noise ] >> we ain't never scared. >> do you care, carolina, arizona? >> it doesn't matter. it is what it is. >> a couple of weeks if we told you this was going to happen, would you have believed it? >> definitely. definitely we would meed it. we have confidence in ourselves. >> one more game to go. >> thank you. >> what did it feel like to knock the ball away?
5:13 pm
a full sprint down the sideline. that's what i did. >> obviously this is pretty big, but -- [inaudible] >> i can't remember. on edleman, trying to uncover. had my eyes on brady. >> you said -- [inaudible] -- everyone picking the patriots. how did you take that? >> we the number one seed, number one defense. y'all going to do what y'all do, though. y'all going to do what y'all do, we going to do what we do. y'all pick who you like, it is what it is. >> did you talk about that, as bulletin board material? >> no. we didn't need that. >> [inaudible] >> i tire myself out there on the field. i'm just trying to catch my breath still. >> this game came down to big plays and you guys certainly made them.
5:14 pm
we did it in practice and training camp. able to do it today. >> how much was that 2-point conversion? anything you saw when you were with the patriots? >> no. they run a play they like to run. lined up and went to their bread and butter and we was on it. >> talk about a game of inches. >> man. seriously. came down to a missed extra point. huge, man. game. >> a lot of debate -- >> [inaudible] >> he our real leader, man. >> here with john elway. john, what do you think? isn't it? >> it's a beautiful looking trophy, but there's another one we'd really like to get. first step, give ourselves an opportunity to compete, and got ourselves back there. hopefully we saved our best for last. tremendous win today.
5:15 pm
against a great football player in tom brady and great offense. great win today. >> how was your heart doing? it got scary at the end. >> got real scary at the end. give that guy that many shots and they'll eventually make plays like they did late. able to stop the 2-point play. a great, great win today. i think i've aged 20 years in the past five weeks. >> you're no longer the oldest quarterback to take a team to the super bowl, now peyton at 39. >> there you go. got another record. i'm glad he's the oldest now. >> how special was it for you to sit on that podium, and i know it's unfortunate mr. bowlen couldn't be there, but how important was it? >> in front of our fans, that makes all what we do worthwhile, to stand there and look at the fans and know we have a chance to be world champions again, it's a lot of fun.
5:17 pm
cool on that fabulous scoreboard. there's a cool graphic, a split screen on the left with the panthers and cardinals. super bowl l logo and the broncos' logo on the right, with the caption, next game, february 7th, 4:30 p.m. mountain time. kickoff at 4:30 our time. super bowl l. either the panthers or cardinals, chad brown. panthers are winning now, 10-0 in the first quarter. i think they're the more interesting team. i think it makes a more fun super bowl if they're matched up against the panthers. what do you think the broncos have a better chance against? >> i think it would be arizona, but i think carolina will win it game and broncos and carolina in the super bowl coming up in two weeks. cam newton, talk about the fun, dancing, but he is perhaps the most effective -- he's a quarterback. quarterback designed runs are a
5:18 pm
they'll have a tough battle against cam newton. >> they'll have to figure out how to stop owen daniels. >> you like to think guys like that -- but you never know until they're put in that situation. at this point in his career, a lot of noise out there about him and, but we love the guy and know he's not stuff left in -- got stuff left in his tank. >> [inaudible] >> if it's his last game i'm sure he'll make it a good one. that obviously will be his decision and hopefully if it is his last game, we can send him out the right way. all our eggs in this one basket and we'll get to work and he'll be a big part of that. >> did he have any words of wisdom in the huddle in the last quarter? >> get a first down. we need a first down. that was the message. plain and simple.
5:19 pm
way he wanted to, but had a great defense to lean on and they were there for us today. >> what's this adventure been like for you? signed a contract as a free agent, and huge impact in the championship game personally. >> this is really what i want the whole time and a big reason why i came here, to have this opportunity to play in this game and play in the one we're about to play it in a couple of weeks. to have an impact, be a part of the team is awesome, but to have impact, a couple of plays i had today, means the world to me. to be able to contribute to wins. whether it's blocking or catching, i don't really care. it's pretty cool to get in the end zone a couple of times. everybody around me doing their job and playing really, really well. you know, i'm kind of at a loss of words. it's exactly what i wanted and that doesn't always happen.
5:20 pm
to play in this game and win this game. worth the wait. >> has it sunk in you're playing in the next game? >> probably not. last night it hit me. d ware got me chokeed up in his speech. was emotional leading up to the game. time during the game i had to calm myself down. good emotions and all very positive things. >> what did demarcus say? >> well, kind of had to be there. it's a privilege to be in that spot. he doesn't say a lot, but when he gets the opportunity to speak, we listen. he had a hell of a speech for us. i was welled up. i know a lot of the other guys were, too.
5:21 pm
>> was there special satisfaction being from baltimore and this was a team that heart breakingly ended your season and come back and have an impact? >> i've played them a few times and for us to play twice in our building and win both times, i'm sure a lot of people didn't think we'd get it done. i don't want to put too much merit to that whole patriot thing, but it's great to be able to beat a team that everyone loves and thinks world. today they were not.
5:22 pm
chad brown close your eyes for a second. super bowl l, peyton manning walks off holding the trophy to end his career. do you believe in fairy tales? >> i believe in fairy tales that play on the team as the number one defense. >> let's go to the podium. peyton manning is addressing the media now. >> i know you don't like to
5:23 pm
and compare? it may be a little sweeter given all you've been through? >> no question this was a sweet day, a sweet victory. to me this victory is a great example of what this entire season has been ike. it hasn't been easy. it's been a lot of different people stepping up doing their parts at different times. starters, becoming starters, and both our safeties get hurt today. have guys stepping up and help us get that win. it's been a unique season, no question about it. this game today was a unique football game. but everybody did their part, truly was a team win. >> you guys struggle a little bit running the ball today, did you think it was going to take you to get them out of it? >> i don't think i got us out of it. we knew it would be a challenge
5:24 pm
they have an excellent front and stout guys. we had to stay committed to it and not be one dimensional and throw ever time. we played these guys last year and got behind and threw it every time. they can force you to do that. that's not a good recipe for having a chance to beat those guys. keeping some kind of balance, whether you were productive or not, that was important in the running game. >> [inaudible] >> i don't think so, no. >> peyton, can you talk about the run specifically, is that a play you would have made last year? is there something different how you're seeing things this year? >> oh, the run. the 12-yard run that led to -- what?
5:25 pm
guys in coverage and we were, sent five guys out, we were trying to find a hole either on the front side or back side. they had it covered well. obviously the first down we wanted it to lead to point, but the one thing it did do was change field position. and we had two possessions in a row where we didn't get points but changed field position. it was that kind of game in the second half. >> obviously a lot of people suggesting it could be the last time -- [inaudible] -- how special is -- >> i'm not going to get into what if scenarios, but i've stated it all week, i've stated it my entire career, i have big respect for tom as a player, as
5:26 pm
done there as quarterback for that franchise. for coach belichick, i think this is my seventh time playing against the patriots when tom brady was a quarterback. i think about the 24th time i've played against bill belichick as defensive coordinator or head coach. i can't get away from either of those guys. it's always been a tremendous challenge to play both of them together, especially. team. collins and -- was awesome. all those guys on defense really played well today i thought. >> in the middle of november if someone told you then you were going to have to role as starting quarterback, what would you have said? >> it's hard to say. take it one thing at a time. staying in the moment, taking
5:27 pm
not assuming this is how it's going to be. this is a final decision here one way or the other. try to take it one week at a time, stay patient and i think that served me well. >> just following up on that theme, when you think about the time you were off and whether or not mentally and a test of your patience, can you reflect and now that you've gotten to this point, what does it mean that time off? >> not really. it's not time to reflect. we have two weeks to play. we're going to play a team we're completely unfamiliar with. a lot of film to study. i think once again, just trying to kind of stay in the moment. we'll enjoy this victory tonight. this was a special victory, heck of a game. like i was saying earlier, sort
5:28 pm
and staying patient. that's kind of been the advice that i've tried to follow and i think that's served me well so far. >> how would you describe this kind of year, the press that you've had -- >> certainly as frustrating as it is to have an injury in a certain part of your body and mistime, i think it can be a positive for other parts, so i feel pretty good. >> moment after the game when you can celebrate with your dad and kid, what does that mean? >> oh, it's special. s special. coach kubiak talked about it during the week about soaking it up for everybody. he mentioned demarcus, the limited amount of playoff games -- the limited amount of playoff games he's been in.
5:29 pm
for granted, no matter how old you are, kubiak, wade phillips, or nixon, our rookie corner who just got activated this week. to enjoy that and soak it up is the game, is the fans and then the moments with your name after the -- family after the game as well. >> will you go back to the first quarter and talk about how important the first couple of drives were that culminateed in the red zones? >> yeah. they were huge. they do a great job of getting the lead, making you play catch up and get you out of your offense. didn't look good the first two plays. bad first play and second play made a good break-up. emmanuel made that good play, and we found a little rhythm. converted a couple of 3rd downs. i know owen wanted this game as
5:30 pm
his season ended last year in new england and for him to have two touchdowns in this game, i'm very happy for him. that ended up being the difference. that was something we talked about, hey, sure we'd love to score a ton of points, but touchdowns over field goals in the red zone would be critical. i hated the fact jordan and i just missed each other on our last possession. we just missed that. certainly room for improvement and we'll shoot for that this week. >> as a quarterback, what does it mean to have a defense like this and considering the circumstances, might that have been the best defensive performance you've been a part of as a quarterback? >> i can't say that, just because i haven't thought about it. i really try to focus on this game. it was an outstanding performance against a fine football team and great offense. they knew they were challengeed
5:31 pm
i've really enjoyed playing on the same team as that defense. glad i haven't had to face them, i'll say that. they've been challenging in practice, training camp. but it is special to watch them work and perform out there on sunday. >> peyton, how much you have changed as a quarterback since the last time you were here after the afc championship game, is the process not only because of the physical setbacks you've had, but also the offensive system, the game differently? that. probably all the above. you try to do your part and contribute. when you're not able to contribute because you can't participate, you try to be patient and work yourself back into a position to be available a contribution. that. there's no question it's been a

tough day. they're a very good defense. played well all season. good coverage, got a good rush. put a lot of pressure on you. we made a lot of plays. a lot of plays we didn't make. lot of fourth down plays that ended up costing us and we made a couple that again, there were too many of us and we never could play with the lead and on our terms. so it was an uphill battle all day. >> now we go from manning brady 17 to manning newton, chad. >> the prescription for stopping tom brady is getting the pass rush. carolina has an answer to that, they have planned runs with newton to slow down your pass rush. that will be a big difference in cam's ability to use his feet. >> we're assuming the panthers

welcome back live to the broncos locker room. things have pretty much cleared up. looking forward to that super bowl confetti. >> what a game. i've seen a lot of great football games. this really, the most unbelievable game and it was a game that was so much like this season, with things coming down back and forth, back and forth. and at the end the defense getting it done. >> they did get it done. and peyton manning is not done. that was part of the commentary colonel in here. one reason why the broncos were underdogs at home, as they thought tom brady was a better quarterback than peyton
5:43 pm
you heard out there in these pregame shows someone said peyton manning is done. peyton manning is not done. aaron rodgers is done. russell wilson is done. okay. who else is done? tom brady is done. peyton manning is not done. he's going to be one of two this season. i tell you what, if it's going to be the panthers, i think the broncos have a great chance to make this the final story book ending for peyton manning. >> carolina up now, 17-0. mike was talking about peyton versus brady. brady had 3 touchdowns this season here. manning had one touchdown. came out gang busters and daniels got the ball running. >> 2 touchdowns in the first half were so big. i couldn't get over last week the patriots beat the chiefs, only kicked two field goals in the first half. the difference i saw was the pressure they got on tom brady.
5:44 pm
front group touched him almost every play it seemed and he was uncomfortable. he was off his game. in 13 he was off a little bit here. he doesn't play well in denver. he didn't today. missed a couple of throws late, deep. missed a couple of throws short. >> even when he didn't get sacked, and denver sacked him a lot, they still hit him. you mentioned the super bowl, now they get ready for likely carolina. we heard them talk about it today, they love this nobody believes this. number one defense in the nfl and tom brady was supposed to light them up. >> people just don't buy into defense. >> it wins championships, though. >> we saw two years ago, broncos broke every offensive

but seattle had the number one defense. the biggest mismatch in this game by far was the broncos' defensive front against the patriots' offensive line. they destroyed them. tom brady is still a very good quarterback. almost pulled that game out. but he's not quite as good a quarterback when he was under duress like today. >> if it wasn't for gronk, the
