this is a developing story this afternoon. car/pedestrian accident at the of art. more details as they develop for us. the woman accused of stabbing denver -- a denver fire chief was in court today. her case may hinge on her mental health and the role it played in the stabbing itself. maureen rodriguez remains in jail and she is charged with sexting -- second-degree murder and first-degree assault. her son said that his mom surfaced from schizophrenia. he said that some sort of episode probably caused her to stab the chief. he returned to work the next day. psychologist max martel says that it could play out a couple of different ways in court.>> the defense has a few options.

mental illness, their only real choice is to have her plead not guilty by reason of insanity and have that explored as the cause for her actions and her inability to understand what she was doing was wrong. >> she will be back in court on february 17. today family and friends of the 16-year-old who died -- after falling through the ice laid him to rest. he was under water for 30 minutes another teenager was in critical condition, but it was announced last night he passed away. at third teenager was rescued and was released from the hospital. the intersection -- the pond is at the intersection of meadowood drive and told -- tallman drive. the rugby coach and fellow

they accidentally triggered a large slide. anthony was caught in the rushing snow and tumbled 100 feet down the mountain. the pair was prepared and they were wearing -- were wearing avalanche airbag switch anthony credits for saving his life. >> all of that snow came rushing down on top of me and within seconds it physically overpowered me. it was like being caught in a washing machine. one ski was like this and the other one was like this and completely down. i helped to pull him out.>> they are lucky and they walked away without injury. they say that they took precautions because they knew there was potential for an avalanche in the area of berthoud pass. anthony says he took responsibility for triggering the snow slide. he wants people that are in the backcountry to always be

among 10 people accused with trying to have sex with underage girls. this is part of an undercover sting operation in adams county. we have jessica live in brighton.>> reporter: this was a three-day sting operation conducted by i.c.e. and adams county. it resulted in 34 arrests and several suspects appeared in court this afternoon. alton suspects will face charges for sex trafficking and attempted child sex assault. there are notable arrest in this group. three of the 10 suspects are illegally here from mexico. two other hold -- to others hold positions of trust. investigators say that they need the public's help with another arrest. 35-year-old david hocker is an elementary school teacher in

he may have other sex crimes because he has worked at other schools in the past. >> i have not talked to any administrators at the school. that is a factor, but not one that came into play in the filing of charges. obviously it is concerning. the reason we put the information the press releases so that people could no weather's individual is at and there is not speculation as to which school this individual is teaching at. >> reporter: investigators did not release much information about the sting for confidentiality reasons. we do know that he tried to solicit sex from a 14-year-old and an 11-year-old. three of the suspects appeared in court this afternoon and the other seven, including the teacher, will appear in court tomorrow. >> you pointed out that they have released afford it -- the photographs.

from the public would be the university of denver is trying to clarify campus alerts about what has been referred to as incidents of forcible fondling. the school said out reports of two incidents. one at leslie avenue and high asbury avenue and josephine security is advising students to travel in groups. twice in the past week, we have use the term forcible fondling to describe incidents that were reported and describe to us. this definition is used for a variety of forms of unwanted sexual contacts, the university says. they are still investigating. the district attorney's office says that the colorado law is unlawful sexual contact. that means sexual contact where the person does not consent or is unable to give consent. it is a class i misdemeanor unless the unlawful sexual contact is done under force, threat or intimidation. then it is a class iv felony. dozens of people waited

deal with this. this week colorado lawmakers will work on the latest attempt to clean up legalize marijuana. federal government which determines which are safe and which are not an, which ones crops. under federal law, marijuana is drug. so, regulators have cobbled together a system of screening for pesticides to decide which ones are safe. >> what has colorado been doing to determine what is safe? >> it has to be a broad enough use on the label. it has to be tested on things like leafy greens in general and it has to be proven to be safe to smoke and heat. once it meets those -- eat. once it meets those criteria, then we determine it is a safe pesticide to be used. >> reporter: lawmakers will

can only use those that are approved. right now there is a list of unapproved pesticides, but the list is too long. another bill on the subject comes up next week. it aims to create an optional label to certify pot as specified -- pesticide free. they may not use organic because that label is controlled by federal law. the navy says there is no sign of the gunmen or shooting at the naval medical center in san diego today. it was on lockdown. if you are watching this morning, it got a great deal of attention. an active shooter was reported this morning. the navy said that the military police check building 26 after somebody reported hearing three shots in the basement. the basement is a combination gymnasium and barracks. no specific gunmen are weapon was found -- or weapon was found. >> they knew they had done nothing wrong. this is not only a relief, but a vindication as well.

made videos about planned parenthood and they are accused of using the driver's licenses to infiltrate the group. the video alleged that planned parenthood illegally sold feel tissue for profit. a grand jury indicted the two and confirmed that plan per trade did not do anything -- planned parenthood did not do anything wrong. they used fake california driver's licenses to -- with the intent to defraud another. they face charges of tampering with a governmental record which is a felony. one with a misdemeanor for attempting to purchase human organs. how doctors in the united states screen for depression. that task force now recommends that all adults be screened for depression during their examination.

and new moms should be screened. patients will be asked to fill out short surveys for sign of depression. mental health advocates are praising the survey. >> reporter: i am in 100% agreement with this. i think it is extremely important. when you walk into a physician's office, there was take your vitals. they way you and get your height and blood pressure. a lot of doctors offices will ask about pain level. i think depression screening should be one of those vitals that they check with everybody, every time you go in. depression is widespread in the united states and nearly 7% of american adults, or about 60 million people, have had one major depressive episode in the last year. we are sorry to report today that a much loved and very well-known character actor has passed away. he played over the hill

this time it was to the upside instead of the other way. the dow rose 282 points. the s&p gained 26 and the nasdaq added 49. states are hiring, including the higher -- including the state of colorado. the sharpest drops occurred in missouri and oregon last month. the colorado unemployment rate dropped to the lowest rate since april 2007. the unemployment rate is not always decline one more hiring occurs because more americans may start job hunting pushing the rate of even as others are getting jobs. in colorado it was 4.4%. in june, hospitality in manufacturing all solid gains. there were gains in mining and logging have started to slip. sprint has downsized across the country. employees were notified friday. a spokesperson says the company

areas affected by the zika virus. porter rica -- puerto rico announced an increased number of zika virus cases. the brazilian officials have linked the virus to birth defects. if you are pregnant, you need to know what is going on with your travel arrangements. here is a list of -- list of countries. pregnant women should consider postponing travel to 22 destinations with zika infections. that includes puerto rico. they are testing 2200 potential zika cases that have tested negative for other viruses. those are places you need to take off your itinerary if you are traveling. there is a potential for

a look at the avalanche statistics. earlier in the newscast you heard about 14 deaths so far related to avalanche across the country just this season. i did a little bit of digging and as far back as 2006, colorado has been the leading state the most deaths. of course, that may be because of the great mountains and the snow that we have had, but it is something to consider when you see those watches and warnings go out. backcountry travel becomes more dangerous. we have about 41 inches at beaver creek and 45 at fail -- vail. we had two and half inches of snow just yesterday and for new inches in steamboat -- 42 inches of snow in steamboat. -- four new inches of snow in steamboat.

behind the flat irons and we can see a beautiful silhouette of the mountain. it is 41 at dia and feels like 36. out here in the backyard, our temperatures are 40 degrees. let's check the weather across the state and we will start with where we got to today. with a high of 40 degrees, we 44. 43 in fort collins and 37 in greeley. in the high country, we only got up to 12 in gunnison. through the evening, we will see those temperatures drop to below zero in some mountain valleys again. temperatures are in the 30s and northern colorado in 20s in the higher elevations. through this evening we -- it will be a dry one. pass through this evening, it will be a dry one. you will see a bright star next to the moon which will be the planet, jupiter. as we approach tomorrow

56 will be the high for tomorrow. it will be warmer and dry. as we go through the day it will be 27 around 7:00 a.m. 50 degrees for your hump day. it has shifted to the north right now in the storm track is taking rain or snow. it is going up and over to canada and toward the midwest. the cool weather shifts toward the east. high pressure will build over colorado and warmer air is in store for us over the next several days. this is way above average as i mentioned. 44 is the normal high. tomorrow we will be 10 degrees above that. 60 degrees in store for friday. on saturday, we cool things down and 56 will be the high. we will bring in snow for the high country on sunday and a chance for rain and snow and the front range.

it was honoring the chattanooga 5. meeting up with a big fan who was diagnosed with breast cancer. about 45% of the votes came in and the people of tennessee chose peyton manning honoring the chattanooga 5. it was incredible what he did. peyton manning was part of a show called chattanooga strong which honored the people killed. peyton manning has a home in chattanooga and started hero's fund for the marines and the sailor who died. he was -- she is very philanthropic, he and his family. >> what he is done in indianapolis in colorado and tennessee. it makes you feel good, no matter what. it is a big challenge to get all of the team gear ready for superbowl 50. >> that includes getting the patches on the jerseys in the

we got a sneak peek of peyton manning's super bowl jerseys. they will be wearing the white uniforms. they have been terrible when they have been wearing orange. all of the losses have been blowouts. denver wore white back in 87 when they lost and then and 99 when they beat the atlanta falcons and super bowl xxxiii. they also wore blue when they beat the packers. this year they are going with white. >> perhaps mr. elway had a say in that. we have a shy guest today, but he warms up when he gets close to people.

he is so adorable. he is just eight weeks old and is an australian cattle dog mix. he is up for adoption. he came to the shelter earlier this month and he spent some time in foster care until he is old enough to be adopted. he is a little bit shy of new people, but once he warms up, he is very affectionate. johnny is inquisitive and loves to explore his surroundings. he likes to play with toys and other puppies. the key to his heart is a little your scratch. he is looking for a great forever home to give him the love and care that he needs. he can be adopted for $400 which includes his nerd -- neuter surgery, vaccinations and a health checkup. if you wanted him to be a part of your family, you can contact the foothills animal shelter at 303-278-7578. he has that little puppy smell.
