this is 9news. >> we start with breaking news right now. one person has been sent to the hospital and dozens of people are now out of their homes after an early morning apartment fire. >> some had to run out barefoot in their pajamas. others had to make their way through smoky hallways. >> 9news reporter tarhonda thomas is at 24th and welton in five points with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. i just talked with someone who was one of those people who had to run out in nothing but his underwear after this fire started. he said it was so dark and so smoky he couldn't see anything and that man lives in apartment where you see broken window right there on the right-hand

4:15 this morning. that's when firefighters got that call of a fire. they say about ten people were inside and one of those people was seriously injured. serious conditions. firefighters have not been able to tell us if they had smoke inhalation or burns. we are working on updates on that. as far as this fire goes, as of a couple minutes ago actually still burning. it may not look like it right still burning a couple minutes ago. the firefighters are on the inside and they are working the back side of this fire. on the back of that building are live power lines that fell down during this fire. so xcel energy has come to the scene to deactivate the lines and make sure they don't pose a risk to firefighters and residents. speaking of residents, the speech who lived here, one of the people told me this is somewhat of a shelter for people who are down on their luck and experiencing hard times. ten people lived in here in

building. it's a have he old building. as we know, five points a city's only cultural historic district and it's a very old neighborhood. we are seeing one of those buildings that may have been one the originals here. that's why firefighters are intent on looking through every nook and cranny of this building to make sure that this fire is out. meantime, they have shut down welton between 24th and 25th. let's talk to 9news traffic reporter amelia earhart to see how to get around it. that's right. with the road closure in place in the intersection around 24th and wenten, champa still open. additionally, with the power lines down in the area we could see closure extend through the day. if this is your morning right to work or your neighborhood, keep that in mind. we've also got big delays on the south side with a northbound

if you are waking up in castle pines, greenwood village, we expect southbound delays as well. northbound i-25 north of c-470 is the scene of the crash. stop and go delays are in place. your local side streets like quebec can help you out. it is a calm, quiet morning out here. relatively mild as well. temperatures have been holding in the upper 20s and low 30s. live over the area, not much happening over here. really good news again. air quality's moderate at best. so we're looking at no wood burning restrictions today. hovering at or above freezing through the commute. by the time we get everybody to their office, it's going to be in the 40s. we warm up quickly today. it is dry right now on hd doppler. we have dry conditions here and we are forecasting dry through the state. in fact, we run quickly into the 50s and 60s as we go into the early part of this afternoon

we are in the 30s. look for 30s and 40s out west. we are still anticipating some snow, moderate to heavy snow along with a lot of wind and colder temperatures coming in sunday night into monday. i'll have more on that in a few minutes. >> thank you much for that. three minutes after six right now. for a third time in just over a week people on du's campus are being told to go around very carefully and to go around in groups. >> 9news reporter noel brennan is there now where a third person has been assaulted. >> the descriptions are very similar? >> reporter: they are. they are not very detailed, cheryl. this latest happened at iliff and josephine. university of denver tweeted about it about 2:00 this morning incidents. the first one reported on wednesday of last week. that one happened near east wesley avenue and south high street.

sunday morning near asbury avenue. the first incident involved a man six feet tall. was seen wearing a hat with ear flaps. the second involved a man wearing a black hoodie who grabbed a woman from behind. this morning's incident involved a man described as six feet tall seen wearing a black sweatshirt. denver police were searching through the area overnight. they were not able to find anyone. no arrests-made in this case or in any of the others. university of denver and denver police urging students and everyone walking around to walk in groups if they can and to always stay in those well lit areas as well. gary, if you see anything suspicious, give police a call. >> absolutely. thank you for that. five after six right now. a driver who sped across a roadway, then over a sidewalk, killed an elderly man is facing charges this morning. police say that 81-year-old charles tatman crossed six lanes on wadsworth boulevard in lakewood without slowing down.

car just before the crash. 51-year-old franklin nelson died as he was standing near a bus stop. tatman's car did not stop until it hit the side of a walmart. he is cited with careless driving resulting in death. investigators do not think drugs or alcohol were a factor. they are looking into whether a problem with the car or tatman's age played a role in the accident. the wife of a police officer who faked his death to cover up crimes has now turned herself into law enforcement in illinois. a grand jury indicted melody glenowits on a felony count. they say she used money meant for chair ititable funds for personal benefits. her husband died last september after investigators say he staged his suicide, tried to make it look like a crime to embezzlement. melody gliniewicz is now in the county jail. a denver man is suing the police department and the department and city attorney

right now. the lawsuit says training for failing citizens. brandon schreiber's brother matthew fell asleep at a bar in lodo in 2014. sent brandon schreiber tried to talk to the police officer about his force against him. the encounter was caught on camera. >> i remember his right arm just coming down onto my neck and, you know, my bottom half of my face, my chest, and he is kind of pounding me. >> schreiber was arrested but the charges were later dropped. the officer got a 30-day suspension, but that was denver police confirm the officer involved is still on active duty patrol. 9news reached out to the denver get a call back. the new complaint partially properly training police officers.

home in colorado thanks to marijuana. authorities say illegal drug traffickers are moving here to marijuana to grow their crops and then ship large amounts of pot out of the state to places where it will still illegal. in one case the owner of a skydiving business crammed hundreds of pounds of marijuana on his plane and flew it to minnesota. prosecutors say they are going after the more sophisticated say police have exaggerated the problem. in money news, another for profit college is apparently in trouble with the government. the federal trade commission is suing devry university ausing them of misleading students about their chances of getting a job and increasing their income after graduation. the ftc found some of the company's ads were deceptive and the college will have to notify students about this. devry management however says they disagree with the ftc's findings. watch shares of facebook today. they soared 12% in late trading yesterday. the company beat earning forecasts reporting $1 billion

they are seeing a lot of growth in mobile advertising both on its site and instagram as well, and facebook ceo mark zuckerberg says the company is exploring a possible stand alone site now videos. game. the tech giant will debut its year. 30 second spot which is already on youtube stars alec baldwin dan marino. alexa. helps them plan a super bowl party i guess in the ad. the ad cost, by the way, $5 million. that's just for a 30 second spot. nice day today. temperatures in the 50s. tons of sun. looking ahead, sunday morning snow. it already started snowing in the mountains, by the way, on saturday. storm begins to move our way. cuts down through northeastern sections of new mexico, will move through here monday. by tuesday afternoon it starts pulling out.

welcome back at 6:12. live up to sky9 which is flying over the apartment fire at 24th and walton. this live look from above shows that there is a huge presence on season. tarhonda thomas is on scene. she will give you information about this fire. we are going to talk traffic meantime. we have several closure in place because of this overnight house fire. welton shut down there in the immediate area near 24th. champer remains open. scott is open. so is park. this is near the five points neighborhood. of course, a very busy area. we do want to talk about light rail service in the immediate area. the d line is shut down with access to downing street this morning because of this fire. right now a bus bridge is in place between 30th and downing, and also 18th and california. that whole stretch is going to be busy.

we will have updates through the morning as to when that gets back up and running. meantime, a spot to avoid. thank you. we have high clouds over the area now. very few of them, in fact. still watching not the first storm you see. the second one behind it. still developing. still moving our way. i think it's going to accelerate a little bit, be here sunday into monday and wrap up a little earlier on tuesday. still looks like an intense storm to me. teens, 20s across eastern colorado. slipping below zero through the central part of the state. a lot of sun around the state today, including the front range. that moves us into the lower 50s in northern colorado. we will be almost 60 degrees in a few spots around town. 40s and 50s in the foothills. statewide again looking at generally clear conditions around here with a few fair weather clouds dodging the landscape.

40s from grand junction and the colorado river down south. 60 plus in southeastern colorado. partly cloudy today. nice looking day. more sun than clouds by a long shot. 58 your daytime high. tonight into the low 30s. we will see clouds filter in out of the west, and that's going to keep temperatures below 60 tomorrow. a few thin clouds filtering the sun. enough to keep us in the upper 50s. 50s again on saturday. sunday we start to see this light snow develop. i think monday is really the center point for this storm. a very windy day going for us. much colder with moderate to heavy snow much of the day. we will be wrapping things up tuesday morning and then be slowly clearing tuesday afternoon. but clearly it's going to be extremely cold around the area for the first part of next week. >> marty, thank you, i think.

>> there was a smile. 6:16. dealing with a whole lot of debt. katie mullens has filed for chanter 7 bankruptcy. they recently expanded into the denver highlands neighborhood. should be operations as usual though during this reorg. investigators trying to determine whether a takata al-baghdadi is responsible for another driver dying in a crash. it's an '07 honda civic from last year. if the takata inflater is to blame, this would be the 11th death linked to a defective al-baghdadi made by the company, and it may lead it to an expansion of this already massive recall. uber is taking customer complaints about their drivers going too fast. they will now use a driver's smartphone to check their speed. that technology is used by some corporations right now. it's apparently pretty accurate.

northbound stretch are being exited off at the exit of county line road itself and made to re-enter the freeway around the bus that you see on the left-hand side of your screen. this crash happened involving a car as well as a motorcycle. that information coming in from a viewer in the area. you can see there is a motorcycle there pulled off to the side of the road. we are not sure if that's a police motorcycle or one involved in the crash. but according to a viewer that was in the immediate area, people immediately got out of their vehicles and pulled the driver from the road. again that information coming from somebody who was driving through that area. as for right now the back-ups are pretty extreme. a quick look at our cdot camera on the ground level. this is the type of delay that we are dealing with. marty, good alternate routes are going to be yosemite and quebec the west, and to the east chambers or jordan road will help you link up with arapahoe.

a lot of sun in eastern 50s. 60s in eastern colorado. mainly in the 30s in the mountains. we will crack 40s in the western valleys. a cold start to the day, but a rapid warm-up in the 20s and 30s. with this coming storm starting on saturday we'll begin to get some light snow. not much. a couple inches. then sunday into monday we are and a foot and a half of snow. here is the thing. i am using the most conservative model to do this for mountain areas. cheryl, i would actually look at this more as a baseline for the storm rather than the top of the storm. it's going to be impressive in the mountains. >> when the baseline is more than a foot, that tells you something, doesn't it? thank you. 6:21 now. there are political analysts who say donald trump refusing to debate tonight is a shrewd

lose more if he didn't have a good debate. well, trump is sticking to his guns telling fox news' bill o'reilly there is no way he is going to be a part of this debate. meanwhile, other candidates are just fed up that trump still gets all this attention. >> interesting sideshow. greatest show onert. this is not a show. this is serious. >> tonight's debate is the last one before the iowa caucuses on monday. an nbc news poll out this morning shows that trump shows a comfortable lead in that state. today democratic presidential candidate hilary clinton will be campaigning in iowa. new numbers out right now show that she and bernie sanders are very close in the polls there with a slight lead for mrs. clinton. the nbc "wall street journal" meris poll shows clinton has 48%

so the denver broncos gear already on its way to santa clara and the team is going to be following soon. they will get there sunday. while the game will be played in santa clara, many of the events surrounding super bowl 50 are south of there in san francisco. more than one million people will converge on that whole area. metal detectors are being put in

block area in san francisco called super bowl city. bags measuring only 18 by 18 or smaller are going to be allowed inside that security area. drones won't be allowed to fly in the city, and city leaders are talking it the faa about restricting airspace all next week over the event. san francisco is also banning fireworks, laser pointers, portable speakers, and even folding chairs from inside that super bowl city area. >> tight security inside the stadium. the broncos orange and blue is ready to go. crews painted the end zone at levi stadium yesterday. the broncos logo first. then orange lettering and finally the blue background. the panthers logo goes on the other end. >> yeah. >> now, if we could just make the seats orange. >> and when the broncos take home the super bowl 50 trophy, it will look a little different than in years past. tiffany creates the trophy every

this is 9news. >> dozens of people in pajamas escaping thick black smoke as their apartment building burned in the middle of the night. a new warning this morning for folks in the du area. for the third time in a week somebody has been sauled near campus. the latest on the search for the person responsible and more on the alert sent out to all students. and a big storm could be heading towards the denver metro area. marty coniglio is watching these models closely to tell you how much snow we could get early next week. >> everyone wants to know. welcome back. corey, gary and cheryl with you

nice to count down. >> yes, it is. >> marty and amelia joining us as well. amelia, a major block on i-25 right now? >> we do. directly up to sky9, they are flying over i-25 northbound near county line road. an accident involving a car and potentially a motorcycle took place here this morning. this rtd bus that you see at the center of the screen is parked off to the shoulder of the drive, parked in the dirt between the entrance from county line and i-25. we are not sure if they were involved in the crash. but a huge response has showed up because of this wreck. if we can look at a wider view here, northbound i-25, three left lanes are getting by. but the back-ups are intense. at one point i-25 was shut down completely. also we got a report from people in the area that were driving by saying, you know what? a motorcyclist was down on the ground wearing full protection. so helmet and protection clothing. but they were pulled off of the

to get out of their car. let's look at the back-ups as we see in our cdot camera. it is basically a stop and go approach to this delay. we are talking slowdowns into the castle rock area. so your alternate routes in that immediate part of town will be to the west quebec and yosemite, as well as to the east. you also have the option of using your slowdowns there to access chambers or jordan. marty, at least the rest of the drive is quiet. but we need to know the rest of our forecast this morning. well, around here thank goodness we don't have any weather issues to compound that problem down south. it is going to be warm today. a few high clouds tomorrow. we are going to keep perhaps a little below 60. not much. it looks like a snowstorm starts sunday evening and goes through tuesday morning. as we look across the area now, 20s, 30s here up and down the front range. we are in single figures above and below zero in mountain areas. beautiful morning this morning

you have teens, 20s in the east. those chilly temperatures in the northern and central mountains going just now going below zero around rangely and steamboat springs. for us today mainly sunny conditions. a few fair weather clouds across the area. temperatures in the upper 50s around here today. very little wind in the area. we are going to see moderate temperatures through saturday. light snow starting on sunday. it does look like we are starting to dial this in for monday, and it does look like we have a pretty good sized snowstorm headed our way. >> i know you will be talking about that a lot. right now we have crews on the scene of an apartment fire in denver's five points neighborhood that sent one person to the hospital this morning. >> scary morning for a lot of people. 9news reporter tarhonda thomas is near 24th street and welton street. >> tarhonda, what are crews telling you now? >> reporter: well, right now we're looking at firefighters who are still inside of this house. this fire started at about

still working on getting it completely out. we are expecting an update in just a couple of minutes from denver fire. but you can see the ladder reaching up to the top of that building, which is a very old one here in this five points neighborhood. residents who live there tell us that it was used sort of as a homeless shelter, operated by a catholic group. ten people have been displaced by this fire. one person was seriously injured. they are in the hospital in serious condition. as we await for more word on that person, another person who survived this fire tells us how scary it was. >> i just heard them screaming outside and they were screaming, kelly, which is my name, but it's one of their names. so i looked out my window and there was smoke coming out their front door and their upstairs windows. >> reporter: another resident said it was scary because it was so dark and smoky.

tried to get his pregnant wife and four-year-old daughter out of that building. you can't see on the back side of that building crews are working there, too. xcel energy power crews are there with firefighters because a couple of power lines went down in this fire and they were live wires. so those crews are cutting the electricity to there, trying to make sure that it doesn't present a more dangerous situation. meantime, welton is closed between 24th and 25th. for those of you taking light rail, there is no d line service to downing because of this fire. you have to work your way around this. more importantly, firefighters need to determine a cause of this fire saying maybe it started in the attic. there are arson investigations on the scene. we will keep you updated with the latest on the investigation through the morning. >> tarhonda, thank you for that. 6:35 right now. another fire. four fire departments had to haul water overnight to fight this one. it's a house fire. you can see that major damage was done.

his hearing was postponed to stod. is accused of trying to break into a house. property records show the home belongs to a former corrections employee. goulet is a reported member of the white supremacist gang and is an associate of 28-year-old evan eble. he killed the state prisons chief in 2013. today one of the men accused of helping kidnap and assault four women is also expected in court. 35-year-old juvenile tamayo faces kidnapping and false imprisonment along with three other men. the four women were between the ages of 17 and 39. police say they were held against their will in a garage in denver. new overnight six people are dead in virginia after an apparent suicide, murder-suicide. police say they first found the body -- they found the first body on a welfare check yesterday and that led them to a nearby home. the suspect, when the s.w.a.t team ended the stand-off late

more bodies including the suspect's. right now they believe all of the victims were killed before police arrived and that they are all related. 6:40 now. new this morning the u.n. health agency is going to hold an emergency meeting to decide whether the zika virus should be considered an international health emergency. the world health organization says the zika virus is going to likely spread to all countries in the americas except for canada and chili. right now latin america countries are dealing with active cases or getting ready for the virus to spread. guatemala is now on high alert. dozens of cases reported there already. cuba is bracing for an outbreak as well. they have found cases in haiti and the dominican republic. scientists are targeting the virus with genetically modified mosquitoes. an experimental program has

explosion of the steve spangler challenger. 73 seconds after lift-off as it was climbing into the blue sky a failed seal called an o ring caused the shuttle to blow up killing the seven astronauts on board. it was one of those disasters that people remember where they were when they saw or heard about it. i was at cape canaveral with photographer manny sotelo doing stories on colorado connection to the mission. cu-boulder ellison on zuko was on board. it had a sat slight called spartan halle on board. we were there with six elementary school kids and teachers from boulder county. they had won a contest sponnered by ball aerospace to watch the launch. something they are still emotional about three decades later. >> dave aguilera, who led the trip down from ball aerospace, this was just after the accident. and he just turned to us and he said, they're dead.

watch it. it's on the home page of 9news.com right now. we want to check the traffic. amelia has that. >> we are looking at sky9 video from the i-25 drive northbound drive where a motorcyclist went down. according to a witness, they let us know that the motorcyclist had to be pulled off the road by some drivers who immediately got out of their cars to help. so pretty tough scene. i-25 was closed down for a time. right now three left lanes are get through. so the back-ups are slowly subsiding. the motorcycle is up on the tow truck. there is an rtd bus off to the right shoulder. as we see on the cdot cameras the gridlock delay because of the curiosity factor in the area. intense. we are talking the approach to south side of i-25. as for your alternate routes in the area head off to the east and use chambers or peoria. so the east of centennial

heading to the west, quebec and yosemite pretty good alternates. all those routes are filling up this morning. >> and the volume getting big youer in the rush hour. looking ahead head into the weekend, saturday starts the snow in the mountains. it continues to sunday morning. sunday afternoon it intensifies in the mountains, starts moving to the front range. i think we will get light snow here. monday is when things really wind up over eastern colorado. that's when it will be most intense. monday morning through monday evening. and then tuesday we start to see this storm pull out and away. it's going to be very cold on the back side. we are seeing some consistency today with the computer model forecasts from yesterday still putting us at 10 inches plus here on the front range. could be in excess of a foot or two in the northern and central mountains. its going to be a pretty good sized storm next week. 6:49 right now. coffee prices continue to crash, but starbucks is not likely to lower its prices any time soon. prices for beans are at their

not a lot happening around here today. we have a couple of clouds here and there. cold in the mountain valleys as you would anticipate. rain continuing in the pacific northwest. this, by the way, not the storm we have been talking about. storm we're talking about is still several hundred miles to the northwest of that one in oregon and washington. 15 below in gunnison. 29 in denver. we are in the 20s over the eastern plains. through the day today a lot of sun. 10, 15% cloud cover through the front range this afternoon.

enjoyable for you. low 50s up north. mid-to-upper 50s around here with 40s and low 50s in the foothills. statewide loads of sun. you're gonna need that to get some of the cold air out of the valleys that we have had during the course of the morning. again dry conditions through the day. 30s in the northern mountain valleys and in the san luis valley. 40s otherwise in many locations in central and western colorado. glenwood springs, into the four corners. warmer for the east with 50s and 60s for your daytime highs. now, today a few clouds here and there. upper 50s today. we start to see thin clouds over us tonight. i think all that does is just insulate us a little bit and keep us warmer. 31 an overnight low. way above average. tomorrow the clouds don't want to move, so that will hold us below 60. we stay in the low 50s on saturday. around here. starts getting going. we are hovering at or just

we get very windy and very cold on monday. that's when i think the bulk of this storm comes through. we will be moving the storm out on tuesday, but on the back side it is going to be extraordinarily cold. speaking of the back side, we had that bad crash at county line. problems in the back-up. yes, marty. two crashes to the south end now delaying drivers for several miles. we are talking about thousands of people stuck in the delays. we are looking at northbound i-25 at lincoln avenue. so right in the cone zone the crash is off to the right shoulder. as we go out to our cdot the crash involving the the right shoulder. motorcycle. get rid of the title bar there, stop and go right now. five to ten miles per hour and using alternate routes. as we look in the area of centennial airport, off to the east you want to use chambers or jordan. to the west quebec and yosemite.

quiet with this one exception. that's all related to the fire near five points. that rtd d line still no service to downing. so that bus bridge is in place between 30th and downing and 18th and california. >> all right. amelia, thank you very much. 6:56. here is a look at the morning's top stories. we will start with 9news reporter tarhonda thomas. she is on the scene of a fire in the five points neighborhood. >> reporter: we are at welton and 24th which is blocked off because of this fire. firefighters say it is extinguished right now. they say they are going to start backing out of here. for as bad as this building looks in the front, it's ten times worse in the back. there is a big hole in the roof right now. we have gotten an update on the number of people displaced by this fire. instead of ten, 11 people were inside the building which was being used as a transitional home. that's the way residents describe it, operated by a catholic group.

he was transported to the hospital in serious condition. we will keep giving you updates over on channel 20. corey. >> thank you. to haul water overnight to fight a house fire. you can see the major damage evergreen. a man and his dog got out without any injuries. water had to be strucked onto the fire scene since there were no fire hydrants in the area. for the third time in about a week, du is warning students assault near campus. a tweet went out overnight saying that a man fondled somebody near josephine and iliff. two other assaults happened since last wednesday. the man is described as six feet tall. they say that in all three cases that was a similar but vague description. connected. they will keep us posted on the investigation as they get more information. donald trump usually gets attention for controversy. he is not going to be saying a word at the debate tonight.

he will not go. he told fox news' bill o'reilly there is no way he will be part of it. an nbc news marist poll shows he is still holding his lead in iowa. today democratic presidential candidate will be campaigning in iowa. the nbc "wall street journal" poll showing clinton with 48% the caucus. sanders with 45%. in new hampshire, the poll shows sanders with a lead 57 to 38 over clinton. all right. monday, tuesday still looking very cold. very windy. when it's wind blown snow, it's worse. i think we could see in excess of 10 inches of snow with the next storm. we will start to melt things a next week. but that's going to be a pretty good sized blip there the early part of next week after what's going to be a pretty nice start to the weekend. >> talk about a change. wow, marty, thank you.
