this is 9news. >> wet and icy roads this morning, and it's only going to get heavier throughout the day. this is a live look at fort collins were snow fell steadily while we were sleeping. >> >> yes there are clouds hanging down over the city. there are clouds. hanging down over the flyers. that looks mean. >> the slick roads will make things a little bit slower this morning. marty coniglio -- is tracking it to make sure you are prepared for what's ahead this morning. >> good morning everyone,

we are enduring that -- 9news backyard. a little bit chilly out here but not too bad overall. >> we do want to mention we have 17 closures and delays, aspen, buyers been it closed today and of course were putting all those on their website as well and 9news.com. now let's check in with you because right now the storm is brewing. >> that's right. what it's been doing is shooting off little bands of snow here and there. around the area right now, it's cloudy, we get a couple breaks in the overcast this morning, maybe a little bit of snow here in the backyard but it is just not all that intense right now. however that's going to change and here's why: slight morning showers, the heavy afternoon snow and in the wind will be the kicker throughout the day.

to north. especially northern colorado, that's moved up along interstate 80. everything is coming out of the south. when that happens -- i would call this the developing side of the storm, once we get this low shifted to air -- southern colorado, we will then turn around to a northeast wind. then it will intensify. lots of numbers on here, virtually the entire state except the northwest county with a winter morning. for us by niner 10:00 tomorrow morning, these are the snow totals. i don't have detailed maps, that's coming up.

2" to 5" way northwest. around here, a few light snow showers. once we get to lunch time and beyond, it starts getting serious so i'm sure -- we had 17 closures this morning, i am sure we will have a lot more than that tomorrow. is not problem free on the roads right now. >> good morning, yes that's right. we just heard colorado springs, fountain and teller counties an accident alerts of the things down to the south side so many crashes coming in that along as they are minor and there are no major injuries, you have 24 hours to contact the police. so far here in denver no one an accident alert, but we will let you know if that changes. speedster okay but starting to

right now security wait times not too bad. plenty of spaces open for now. we could see those -- i-70 quarter pretty clear right now. but the north and has been seen -- a little bit more snow and as we head out to noel brennan we do here it's starting to stick. >> yes it's definitely starting to stick to the ground. it's sticking to a lot of stuff. got a couple different transportations -- forms of transportation here. i'm going to help these guys out though, this snow is starting to accumulate on this bike. not the best day for biking and it will be even worse tomorrow. just talking to folks out here,

little more snow than we've gotten so far, but it is certainly sticking to the roads, kind of a winter wonderland out here. when we got to thornton that's when we really started to see the snowpack conditions on i- 25, really icy as well. the further we got up north to loveland and fort collins, that's where we are really seeing the snow start to stick. again only about an inch or so. not too big of a deal out here but tomorrow, that's when we are expecting to see a lot more snow come the morning. >> the snowflakes sure have gotten bigger in the last half- hour. thank you very much noel. 480 flights were already canceled at dia as we get ready for the storm to move in. >> we have keith montgomery with dia this morning. >> yes we just got those numbers so they are still

daily flight schedules the canceled. they are being proactive. we don't have a lot of snow but that is expected to change out about 6:00. they are not yet in full deice mode, but they do expect that to be in place for the rest of the day. >> how are you gearing up for cleaning of the runways and pea boulevard out there. a lot of wind expected to come with this storm also. >> yes a lot of wind and snow. the heavy snow so our crews have been preparing all night and actually the afternoon before so there talking chemicals, sand -- they've been talking all those offense really just preparing the equipment. they are out there right now. the have been -- as soon as that snow starts accumulating is when they will really start tackling things. >> all right. 9news.com and the app will

you today. for fun we've listed nine types of drivers that you see on snowy colorado roads. >> [laughter] which one are you? we are learning a little bit more about the people involved in the shooting of the complex over the weekend. one of them works for the department of corrections in colorado. tarhonda thomas has more. >> yes officials of the doc confirmed but they won't say how that employee was involved. we do know that the doc employee has not been arrested. no one has. police are still investigating. this all happened during the colorado motorcycle expo on saturday. investigators say a fight broke out between the iron ore which

and the mongrels. and agent we spoke to said there were tensions between the motorcycle club and outlying groups. each group is playing -- blaming the other for starting it. four people were shot including the man who died. one was stabbed in the rest looked like they got hurt in a fist fight. we don't know if the department of corrections employee is a suspect of firing a shot. denver police continue to investigate. the center of the storm system about 450 miles away from the front range. this storm is huge. the warnings for this thing go from high wind warnings in southern california, to winter storm warnings in iowa and -- idaho all the way to the great lakes -- almost 2000 miles. the worst of this will go through eastern nebraska.

to leave colorado -- what we are anticipating here during the morning is a shift from a southerly wind to a morning -- northeasterly wind. when this thing starts cooking you will to see this wind driven snow around the area. again these are some of the snow totals around the area. northeast colorado, i-70 to 76, up and down the front range looking at 7" to 14". a lot of wind driven snow on interstate 80 between cheyenne, kimball and -- southern nebraska .

us six at loveland. -- us 6 at loveland, some snow starting to accumulate. slick in some spots and that will continue to build throughout the day. we were in winter park this weekend and they received 11" of snow in the last 48 hours. fresh powder. >> they are having some powder days at there. breckinridge had 4" overnight, loveland had 5, and overnight tonight -- that's when they really get bailed out there. keep that in mind if you're traveling. if you do have travel plans, dia. monitoring conditions at the airport. so far so good. >> yes everything looks great from my vantage point right here. a few flurries just starting to

i want to take you out to paint because it's for this sailing so far. hard drive here was really easy and that was a couple hours ago. no slick spots to report anywhere along i-70 to paint -- pea boulevard. cars are moving along fine. the only slick spots i've seen this morning around the airport has been just here in the parking lot, just what peyton and ice. a little bit of snow here and there but this is going to change so quickly. we just heard from heath montgomery about the 480 flights template -- cancellations. we are going to stay out here and keep monitoring conditions but if you are headed to pea boulevard, you are in good luck right now. broncos fans getting jacked up for the game on sunday. this is super bowl week. >> we have team reporters --

all right it's been 12 months of crisscrossing iowa, getting the messages out and tonight the presidential candidates are going to find out if it was worth it for them. right now the polls show donald trump and hillary clinton hold very narrow leads in their braces in iowa. brandon rittiman is also in iowa, he's been following the story and keeping you updated on the networks of 9news. today they start clearing out the mess in san diego. the tree came crashing down. it crashed into four cars beneath the giant limbs. people that saw it's a it happened in a matter of seconds. one driver was killed but no one was inside the other three cars. that is something though, those keep -- those trees just came down. >> we have the high wind warning going on in southern california.

over to snow, just got a photo from my buddy in silverton, a foot of new snow, that was by 8:00 last night. right now and that high train, just north of durango piling up now especially at about 10,000 feet in the sand wants, running up into the grand mesa. a couple bands of snow. you just mentioned -- that active alert. that's what we have, banned it snow this morning, plenty of gaps in between and more widespread snow for the front afternoon. not especially cold anywhere in the state. a few bands of snow, moderate to heavy through the afternoon. we had upper 20s and low 30s early in the day. after 2:00 temperatures start sliding down as the winds it -- intensify and snow increases. especially the west and

and central state -- parts of the state get the wind early and then these north facing slopes -- 20s and 30s here, freezing or better down in southeastern colorado. we actually have rained down there. we will continue with that and the night. again moderate to heavy snow, heaviest snow at or above 10,000 feet. around here we have it right down on the deck with the seven -- 7" - 14" . 6" to 12" in the adjacent planes. high near 30 tonight, seven -- 7" - 14". the heavier amounts , the suburbs. seem true in northern colorado.

colorado. not especially warm to the early part in latter part of this week, but a few flurries coming up and amelia, it's been quiet so far. all in all seems like it's been fairly quiet. >> that's right, and an accident resulted from the pit maneuvers that had to be attempted by police because of the woman they attempted to pull over on that i-25 stretch near iliff. quick crash near colorado in the eastbound direction, now the second to roll in is a westbound accident near brighton. the delays, now single digits to -- approaching to 70. we start to see those slowdowns over the next 15 minutes or so. in the downtown corridor definitely wet roads, elevated bridges will be the first to get icy throughout the day.

we want to take a look at conditions in the south part of the city, this is i-25 and jewelry where traffic is moving well. cdot told us some of that is fluoride that they have put down ahead of the storm coming in this afternoon. downtown looks pretty nice also right now.
