this is 9news. >> good morning everyone, no big snow yet but the storm is on its way. the metro area expected to get up to a foot of snow in some places by this time tomorrow morning. we have 17 closings and delays listed right now, the big ones aspen, bennett and buyers systems -- closed through -- for the day. skiers and boarders heading up to hit the slopes -- you will have pretty good snow. >> we are here to help you get prepared for the storm. noel brennan is live.

starting to fall. colleen ferrera is on her way to dia and there have already been 48 flight cancellations. -- 480 flight cancellations. she will have the latest. good morning everyone, thanks for joining us. gary and corey with you. cherilus covering the super bowl, she will join us from santa clara in just a bit. amelia earhart is in the traffic center and we start with marty. what time will the brunt of the storm be in? >> to be safe, 3:00. might be a little before that but in my mind i think 3:00 to 4:00 tomorrow morning. -- 3:00 this afternoon to 4:00 tomorrow morning is when you will get 90 person of this. the afternoon and evening is when it gets going and it will be accompanied by 15 to 25 mile-

a couple breaks and the forecast this morning, light shifting snow this morning, no big deal. a really picks up this afternoon and starts driving down. this storm system in central arizona has been pushing of these little bands of snow out of the south. it's part of really a system that traverses all the way from southern california to the great lakes. we have blizzard warnings now for eastern nebraska and parts of iowa from the storm. for us, again a couple flakes early on, a few light showers this morning really intensifying during the afternoon and evening. here we see those snow showers early and then this afternoon, boy it will just pick up and we get this east winds. once we start that we will just get socked, especially in near the foothills. foothills areas, a solid 10" to 20". all of these totals by noon tomorrow, this is when we

the higher amounts are going to be at the base of the foothills and then down south, up county line roads. it may be a light start to the snow but it's not going to be a light finish to this particular storm. we have had wet roads amelia and icy spots in a few areas already an accident alert. >> that's right. the crashes that have occurred have been really quick. as we head out to our metro drive, moving the camera around a bit but what i want you to pay attention to is the shooting on the roads. that's what you can really see there. attraction underneath the tires -- melted away, a little bit of reflection. as for the i-70 corridor, eastbound i-70, that once clear but the brand-new rack is westbound 70 in the area of

the rest of our commute adding up with downtown issues as well. we will have those coming up, but for now let's check in with noel brennan. >> reporter: good morning, i am out in fort collins. downtown along college avenue. kind of a winter wonderland out here. they still have christmas lights up and they are getting a light dusting of snow. you can see on the bench is that it's only a light dusting but it is sticking to the roads. thankfully crews have been through here, and the plows so right now college avenue just wet and slushy. you might be able to hear it. i've got to mention my drive from the metro area up north. when we got on i-25, it wasn't too bad but when we got up to the thornton area and further north, that's when we started to see snowpack conditions on i- 25.

left-hand lane is pretty snow packed and icy in some spots. traveling north. for now though let's headed over to -- let's head over to colleen ferreira. i saw dia tweeted this morning, today. >> reporter: 480 flights canceled so far today, they say that's about 30 to present of daily flights over at dia and that's a huge -- that's about 32 % of daily flights. if you have to fly, check in before you get to the airport so you get an idea of what's going on. on pea boulevard, it's just great. smooth sailing this morning as we were driving this morning. nothing major to report on out here as far as traffic. because it's just moving along as you can see but in the past half-hour if you flakes have been falling out here, so we

of what's to come our way. at dia, they haven't started full deicing mode yet nfpa is reporting eight -- and faa is doing any delays yet but they well. we will stay out here and monitor the conditions as the snow starts to fall. if you have any questions i do have the flight board in the final approach lot so i can always ask -- answer any questions for you. you look so far the air canada has a large number of flights canceled so far. >> thank you. the finger-pointing started not long after a deadly shooting between two motorcycles -- motorcycle clubs this weekend and while attorneys on both sides placed the blame on each other, police are trying to figure out what happened. this was the scene outside the complex after one person was killed and seven others were

iron order and the mongols. major gang. the iron order has a -- has officers in its membership. the man accused in a christmas murder due in court today. he's due in an arapahoe county courtroom accused of shooting a man in the chest christmas night in aurora. the mother who came to colorado to give birth to her conjoined twins can now see her babies in the hospital whatever she wants. children's hospital is removing all visitation restrictions. still, the mom in the hospital have a lot to work out. savannah mccullough gave birth in august to the twins and one of them didn't make it. her attorney says the hospital created a behavioral agreement after staff claims the mother was disruptive.

federal investigators plan to release documents that could shed more light on what caused the fatal amtrak train derail in philadelphia last year. the national transportation safety board has wrapped up its investigation into that crash. eight people were killed, 200 others hurt. it is not clear why the train was traveling at about twice the posted speed limit when it entered that really sharp curve. the story that's going to dominate the headlines today, around the country is the iowa caucuses. the iowa voters begin their formal process of choosing a new president this evening. republicans and democrats spent the day trying to rally the undecided. brandon rittiman is in iowa and he will be bringing us updates throughout the day on the networks of 9news. around here folks are moving along okay and side

moderate to heavy snow this afternoon. what we are watching for is the wind shift, and we see that occur during the morning. once we get to lunch time, the wind starts coming out of the north 15 to 30 miles per hour. it's really going to believe -- blowup that snow. several areas across the state with winter storm warnings. during the course of the morning i will be highlighting different areas to give you more detail. western colorado, san luis valley 5" took a 9". 7" - 14" in the net -- what mountain valley. much less around durango and cortes, only about 4" - 8" . not a lot -- and then montrose up to grand junction, glenwood springs and carbondale. 3" to 6" of brand-new snow.

california. really the most the tour, well developed part of the storms now moving in from the southern to the grand mesa. were also seeing more rain and snow in southeastern colorado. not an especially close -- cold morning for us. the snow will become more widespread virtually covering the entire northeastern in front -- western plains. and driven by strong northeasterly winds. those are the two things that are going to happen. 20s in the foothills, mid to talk -- 20s to low 30s around here. southwest facing slopes have been favored up to now because we have been on the front side of this storm. once we rotate around and start seeing the storm moves to southeastern colorado, we get the upslope wind and that's going to favor the east facing slopes, front range and eastern plains for the rest of the

20s and 30s around here, flipping over to snow very late tonight. 20s in the mountains again. tonight you see that snow continuing through the night, decreasing in the mountains by tomorrow morning. it's going to start slowing down here around 10:00 or 11:00 with the moderate to heavy snow, get a lot of us in that 7" - 14" range here. above 10,000' in many mountain areas, one in -- 1' to 2' of snoop -- new snow. this really gets going this afternoon and evening from northern colorado down to metro denver. 7" - 14" of new snow. after nine a clock a.m. the main storm finishes, we have lingering showers with an additional inch or so, but cool for the rest of this week. i imagine folks making better time this morning then they

>> sounds like it. as you mentioned, the bands of snow coming through snow -- color springs had made for a tough drive. we start off near founders parkway. speed so far so good that you need to know we are an accident alert down south in colorado springs as well as areas of the fountain, and el paso counties. if you're waking up in the metro drive, -- heading out on your metro drive, already a few issues. travel times are about 35 minutes all away from 270 over to i-70 six. -- i-76. eastbound crash at peoria just fell into place of gary and corey even though there's no snowpack yet, the roads are being affected. in the good morning, big snow expected this afternoon. i imagine you guys have been

marty has been tracking the storms. >> marty it will really pick up around 3:00 this afternoon. >> that's right you had mentioned aspen >> -- aspen schools being closed. let me show you why, over the last 24 hours, several inches of snow. purgatory 23" of new snow, monarch and 20, and cooper near leadville 13" with more on the way. a few light snow showers for us this morning, it gets heavy this afternoon anything with strong winds developing through the afternoon and evening. noel is up north because we had nice bands of store -- snow up in northern colorado. and that's really have snow continuing -- have snow continuing up to the grand mesa. again not much happening around here, just a few pockets of white snow but we will continue to get heavier through the morning and you see -- what

visibility. light snow, maybe even a glimpse at the hazy sun but this afternoon it locks down and as it does we are going to get moderate to heavy snow through the afternoon drive -- or evening drive. total storm forecast by noon tomorrow, northern colorado and metro denver both -- in the 7" - 14" , above 9000 feet, east facing slopes, i think a lot of folks are going to be able to do upwards of 2' and 6 to 12 on i-70 toward the nebraska border. it will be an impressive storm and it already has been in colorado's mountains over the weekend. amelia, just a little bit of light snow slowing things down at the present time. accidents have been popping up since about 4:00 but for the most part they have been quick to move off the roads.

the westbound 6th avenue crash near sheridan. you can see everything is off to the right shoulder, cars moving through at 45 miles per hour but this gives you an indication of how early the crashes are popping up. typically 6:00 is quiet but right now a delay across i-70 westbound near brighton boulevard, that's where the crash sits. delays of 24 minutes southbound what i 76 and further east, it i-70 near peoria. all morning long noel brennan has been tracking along the north side and this time he's in fort collins. >> reporter: good morning, we are right on college avenue downtown in fort collins. the snow is still coming down, just daylight snow and dust in. earlier i wiped off this guys scooter and you can see there is a new layer of snow. not the perfect day to be riding the scooter out here. this is what some of the main arteries downtown look like. the crews have been doing a great job passing over with

we've been here this morning. just wet, slushy conditions on college avenue. we saw varying conditions on i- 25 heading north. it really started to get bad when we went to the -- got to the thornton area, it didn't seem like the plows had gotten there just yet. this is overnight and early this morning. snow packed and icy conditions. the further north we got. really not too bad out there, but let's send it over to colleen ferreira along pea boulevard. i know dia is dealing with flight cancellations. >> reporter: it will be a really good -- busy day over here, but it's been a very cold morning so far. right now flurries coming through along with those, very cold breezes. it just bites right through you say you definitely have to bundle up if you're heading out.

traffic building in this early morning hour, people trying to get to dia to catch their flights an hour drive on penny it was easy and breezy. no icy spots to report, no trouble at all actually but the boulevard. we have been checking in with dinner -- denver international airport all morning and so far they say airlines are reporting 480 flight cancellations for today because of the storm coming our way. that's about 32% of daily flights so if you are heading to dia you just have to check with your blind first -- airline first. the main issue i have seen all morning has really just been slick and icy pavement here in the final approach lot, but i say just savor seeing pavement while you can because later on today it will be full of snow. >> yes it will look a lot

>> oh, boy, which driver are you ? the man accused in a fatal hit-and-run over the summer will be in a courtroom today. he's accused of vehicular happened in june. police say he hit a man who was walking across west bellevue avenue. hitting him. they later found him at his home and he allegedly admitted to it as well as to drinking alcohol. who started it? that's the question they are from this weekend. it happened at the national western complex during the colorado motorcycle expo on saturday. tarhonda thomas has been felt -- following the latest developments. >> that's right, the colorado department of corrections has confirmed one of their employees was involved. the aren't saying much else about that personal. the attorney for another group says the employee is a member of the iron order. they got

mongols, an outlaw group that authorities referred to as a gang. authorities -- representatives for the iron order says the mongols jumped them but the mongols say the iron order shoves them. either way it turned into a fight where one person was killed, three others were shot and another person was stabbed. he says outlaw clubs like the mongols with -- take issue with other clubs trying to emulate their style. >> they say they are not a social club and they do a lot of stuff just like the outlaw motorcycle groups. you don't poke these things and not expect a response. police and not made any arrests in the case yet. gary? two virginia tech engineering students are behind bars accused of the date --

year-old girl from virginia. 18-year-old david eisenhower is charged with first-degree murder and abduction in the death of nicole madison level. 19-year-old natalie keepers faces charges of improper disposal of the body and accessory after commission of a felony. she appeared from her home on wednesday -- disappeared from her home on wednesday. eisenhower and keepers are scheduled for arraignment today . the three inmates captured over the weekend after escaping from jail last week. two were arrested on saturday after someone flagged down police officers near golden gate park. they pointed out a parked van that looked like the one stolen by the inmates after their escape. a third inmate was captured on friday and he actually turned himself in. the three escaped by cutting through a great and climbing

that's when we pile up a lot of the snow. we start to taper off after about nine or 10:00 tomorrow morning. total snow metro area northern colorado, in the 7" - 14" range. down south, slightly higher amounts, foothill areas below 9000 feet to 20", at and about 9000', up to 2 feet of new snow. after 10:00 a.m. we could get an additional inch of snow tomorrow so i guess i could bring our total up to 15" but that's nitpicking at that this -- nitpicking at this point . let's look at i-70 from the westside, a new northbound wardrobe accident approaching the i-70 split. the volume slowing down as you make the curve towards golden and the c-470 interchange. in the central corridor of i-

westbound at brighton boulevard in the clearing stages but still 34 minutes of delay from 270 over toward i-70 six. westbound i-70 and 225, a new crash popping up and more updates -- 480 flights already cancel that dia as we get ready for the storm to hit this the airlines are getting ready also. >> that's right, that's about 30% of daily flights. i have been out there for new flip media on the runway and it's incredible the amount of machinery and equipment you have to deal with this. >> absolutely reads -- we have about 250 pieces of equipment on the airfield alone and then there's another 110 pieces of equipment for parking lots, and ground operations like pea boulevard. some people don't realize the airport is responsible for

we are here at the broncos hotel and we are just starting to see lights come on in the room because they will have to get started from day. they are practicing today, but the game plan is already in place. >> yes gary kubiak knew all the distractions that come with super bowl week which officially kicks off today, so he got the game plan in place. he had been going through drills, so when they got here they could just fine-tune to get ready for the big game. >> john elway is focused. he says his team has got to be on key. >> it was interesting after the afc championship, all the guys are doing their confetti angels and john was smiling but it wasn't your see your. he was focused because he knows the difference between getting there and winning the super bowl . >> to get there is a big step and i am so proud of this team, what gary and the staff have done. it's a big step to get where we

you see the southwest flow, the impressive flow we've had in the mountain areas but notice it's coming out of the south -- south means you are in the front end of the storm, the immature portion. we still have the main core of this thing to go. 20s and thursday -- 30s out in east right now, snow showers through the afternoon with strong northeasterly winds and we will be socked in really throughout the french a -- front range through the day today. 20s to about 30 here early and then we will drop things down later. again the storm center will be down around lamar and springfield like today, might even get a spring -- thunderstorm over there. 20s in the mountains, 30s west, 20s and 30s here. it will be warm enough to rain and maybe even a little bit of rain and thunder down south.

here. that's really the story across the metro area that further north, that's where we've seen the most -- snow accumulations. it will be interesting to see what tomorrow looks like compared to today. >> very different for sure. here is a look at today's top stories, denver police still trying to sort out a deadly shooting at the national western complex. one person was killed, seven others injured during the shooting and stabbing on saturday. two motorcycle clubs were involved, the iron order has law enforcement membership and the mongols are a well-known outlaw club. the fbi calls them a major gang. attorneys for both clubs are putting the blame on one another. so far no arrests have been made . in about two hours a man arrested for shooting and killing someone on christmas is due in court. they arrested him late in december, accused of shooting a man in the chest. investigators say it happened in a home on east part --
