the snow didn't stop falling overnight, which means bad news for your morning commute. the roads that aren't snow packed and slick, or they are snow packed and slick. take it slow as you head out today. keep in mind, i-70 is closed all the way to the kansas border. >> we have team coverage of the snowstorm for you this morning. our team is spread out all

[ laughter ] good morning, everyone. we are all in the backyard, the snowy backyard this morning, corey, greg, and amelia this morning. we have a lot of school closures to talk about. >> approaching 500 closures this morning. the eastern plains a lot of the school there is are shut down as well. denver, boulder, jefferson county -- snowday! [ cheers ] most of them have gone back to bed. >> there is that for sure. >> marty, it's starting to lighten up a bit. >> i think it is. we were first out here a couple of hours ago, and we had 7 inches of snow, and now we have 8. another inch or two this morning, and it looks like another inch to come, and then we will start to break things

to slow down around here. visibility is just getting better. northern colorado, we are already starting to see this trend, and this is impressive snow, and there's the measurement i took back here. 8inches in the backyard, and there's a little more to go. it's starting to fall apart here, especially from around oh, 144th avenue to the north, and you can see the snow erode. it's heaviest in aurora down to albert county, and we are seeing a break here, and the last report i saw fort collins had 11 inches of snow after midnight. heaviest snow in the state in yum a, and that's 30 to 35-mile an hour winds, and we have to factor in blizzard conditions

i say in fact there's many of the highways throughout eastern colorado that are closed. light snow reported in the mountain locations, and the front range, we have snow reported, and fort collins, now starting to see some clearing skies at the fort collins' airport, and still cloudy, and they are reporting snow at the present time. the winter storm warnings, you the morning. we have already canceled northern colorado, and i think the most critical weather area will be lineman to the east, and the total is 6-12 inches and we will combine 35 to 45- mile an hour winds. for us, locally, light snow this morning, another inch to an inch and a half. by noon, we will break things up, and staying in the 20s throughout the day. we have lightened the snow up north, and we will see it slowly move down here. we may actually get to see the

don't, we will see the snow shortly there after. an inch or two here heavier from bennett to the east, and the foothills to the mountain locations, 1-3 inches especially from the west to the northwest facing slopes. even though the storm is winding down, the impact is just picking up. amelia, it's versus been a really tough start to your tuesday morning. >> it really has been, marty. that's the same thing that will happen with our drive. the impact has not resulted yet. yes, we have seen a few crashes, luckily all minor. no serious closures crash- related. they all are weather-related. to the kansas state line here, up to the colorado state line, 287 from fort collins up to wyoming, and we take a peek across the cdot cameras, and it's the sheraton camera that sums it up the best. the more cars on the road, the more grooves built into the

and it will be tough to make out where the lanes sit. delays at southbound 25 down to 32 miles an hour, and your downtown commute now made difficult by the northbound crash north of 50th, and south of that, brand new crash south of 20s. we will check in with tarhonda thomas. >> reporter: the flakes are not as fat as they were a little while ago, but they are still growing. you can see the snow was blowing sideways, and that's hitting you in the face as you head out this morning to shovel or go to work. you do have to get on the interstate this is i-25 neardowning. the truck is making its way through, and so are the cars. we have seen traffic pick up in the last half an hour. some people don't have a snow day. you have to get to work this is what the interstate looks like. the cars passing made it sidessier to see some lanes on

seen quite a few cdot plows coming through they have been working for more than 24 hours to get ahead of the storm. there's still know pack from the interstate. make no mistake, you're not do go. know that before you head out the door. this is one of those days. i voted videos on my twitter account so you can see what the roads look like. we just saw the cdot plow and another one pass by down there. see all the snow flashing off the side as they try to clear the interstate? today. we will keep an eye on the interstate and surface streets for you to today, it will be a rough commute for those of you who have to go to work today. becky has pictures to share. some are showing the fun, and some are showing the cleanup that has to be done this guy, first of, this animal

this storm system this is katie. she loves the snow. you can see it all over her face out there enjoying it this morning. we have several shots of folks' backyards and the cars covered in snow this guy is a transplant from atlanta, and he says yikes! i better get used to this. yes it does happen from time to time in colorado. we also, of course, have the patio shots coming in this is out in edgewater. i would say so. certainly 8 inches out there. all of this we have to let melt or cleanup, and it will take awhile. we also had pictures, and i hope it's still on here, out at d.i.a. the planes and roads are all covered in snow, and that is going to be a problem for the folks who are trying to head out of town, and corey, you

school district, and really most of the major metro area schools are closed today, and you get a snowday. you can find the latest radar images, and i should mention bowledder and du are also closed. as we get more information, we will have it, but the entire list is on 9news.com. >> the list keeps on growing. 6:09 right now. a denver police officer's wife accused of assault after a drunken brawl will be in court today. jamie ombie is accused of the fight. it happened at an officer's home, and the ombies left their two small children home alone. the government accountability office is claiming out the department of justice saying it needs to do a better job of keeping track of pot practices in legalized states. the investigators say the doj is failing to make sure the states are failing certain

away from kids. the justice department will now document the specific steps they are taking to document the policies. curtis jones out early shoveling snow. over a foot of snow there. cool lights, by the way, curtis. it looks really nice out there. for us today, slight snow this morning, and some clearing this afternoon, and i think by the evening, you will see the stars coming out. temperatures holding in the 20s all day. we will see the snow erode in northern colorado, focusing really more from highway 7 to the south, and then over to the eastern plains and moderate to heavy snow to eastern colorado and the core of the storm is now in central and north eastern nebraska, where we have blizzard warnings in place for the rest of the day, going into southern sections of minnesota this is a huge regional storm, not just a colorado event. we will look through the day today, and the big issue for the eastern plains will be the

you how they are deicing the planes and clearing the runways. ron charles from dia is joining me now. what are the crews doing behind me? i see the tractors and steam up in the air, too. >> we have one of our 600-ton per hour melters. that's one of six locations we park throughout the tarmac during one of the larger events, and what we do is we use our box plows and pull snow from all the locations on the ramp, over this, near the melters themselves, and then you can see the pile of snow, and then they come in, drop it into the melter. >> reporter: how many acres, to clear. >> 350 acres on the tarmac here. >> reporter: oh my gosh, you're doing such a great job. so far this morning. 125 flight cancellations have been reported at dia, and when the numbers increases, we will let you know. marty, an awesome operation, and they are doing such a great

there's sure a lot of it out here. >> thank you, colleen. around here we are seeing the snow pull out of the state it will take awhile for it to do it. the eastern plains will be the last place to do it. moderate snow over eastern colorado, and we will see the moderate to heavy snow and that's throughout the midwest with the blizzard warnings from kansas up into eastern nebraska, and single digit readings for grant county up here. teens and 20s around here, and this is how things will look here throughout the morning. an inch or two of snow this morning, flurries, and a couple of inches in the foothills, clearing through the afternoon, and we should still see the flurries here and there, but the general trend will be lighter, lighter, lighter, clearing, clearing, clear. 20s here today, and teens in the foothills. statewide, north and west facing slopes throughout the day could see an inch or two of snow, and we will start to see

an inch or two for the north and west facing slopes, and just a few flurries for northern california, and that's heavier snow amounts moving to the north and east of the plains. no one is especially warm. 20s and 30s for the east. teens and 20s for most of the mountains today, and light snow this morning, cloudy this afternoon, and the temperatures in the upper 20s, and tonight. cloudy, calm, and cold, and planning forecast, and we are quite chilly here, and the flurries friday morning, and mid-40s on saturday, and upper 30s with windy conditions on sunday, and it's all about going slow this morning, amelia. >> good morning, marty. yes, it is. if you're just waking up and ready to get out of bed and peeking out the blinds, let us open them for you this is 36 and the pekos. it's hard to make out the lanes of traffic. we are seeing slower speeds as the folks are starting their

a live shot in the rain, too. so we understand. marty and amelia are watching the snow and traffic. >> reporter: i got a where's the snow e-mail? can you imagine. pushing 5 inches here for lewis steam boat this morning. they have had a better part of a foot or a foot and a half today. the lighter snow in the metro area it's slowing down for north eastern colorado, and we will get it on the ridge lines and passes for north western colorado, and in the mountains, throughout the day, the valleys will be quiet. we look over eastern colorado. moderate to heavy snow there. passes. an inch or two of snow. the valleys will not have much happening today. an inch or two here. generally before noon, moderate snow over the eastern plains, and from kit carson county to

as for as the temperatures today, holding in the 20s, and the skies are anticipated. i'm sure a lot of folks will be happy to see that. that does not allow you much, does it? >> i will put it this way. i feel like i'm standing in a snow globe right now. i-25 and founders. not so beautiful for drivers. it's slowing down the speeds. the crash count has been low. i'm getting the feeling with the rest of us here, at the tv station this morning, the hope is to stay home because the volume is rarely this light. up north a lot of questions about the southbound 25 stretch coming in from 36. 14 minute drive. 44miles an hour for the average. unusually quick there, and as

welcome back. 6:26 right now. republican ted cruz celebrating a big win. he won the iowa caucus, with about 28% of the vote for the republicans. and donald trump was in second after leading the polling, and marco rubio was in third, almost tied with trump. >> the democratic winner was called just after 2:00 a.m. mountain time, declared hillary clinton. it was a very close race, clinton getting the win by less than a full percentage point, but it was really a mathematical tie there. o'malley dropped out after getting less than 1% of the vote. this guy during the hillary clinton rally last night could be seen with political stickers on his face.

>> we were in the backyard. >> good morning, everybody. happy snowy tuesday. and do you know what happens a week from today? the biggest holiday of the year. >> fat tuesday! >> the parade? >> that, too. >> we are here to cover the closings, how many? >> over 500. >> all the major schools in the metropolitan area are closed. the kids can go back to bed. closures for the eastern plains as well. it's a slow go out there. almost as many closures throughout. marty, everyone wants to know how much more snow are we going to get? >> an inch and a half, i think by lunchtime, flurries or less, and if we don't see the sun set, we will see the stars shortly after sunset tonight it will improve throughout the day. we are beginning to see a little better visibility around here.

yet, but it's getting slowly better for the northerly winds around here, and we have light snow, obviously coming down here in the backyard at the present time, and the snow is really calming down from what we had overnight. fort collins, almost a foot of snow, and really thank you so much e-mailing this in for 17 inches of snow. 15 in monument. again, it's really slow down southern colorado. we have snow before it filters out and fizzles out to the south. the worst conditions eastern colorado. cheyenne county, again blizzard conditions. i-76 and i-70 both closed. several road closures. amelia will get you through the road closures and current conditions. we see the winter storm warnings in northern colorado beginning to cancel. it's understandable. snow slowing down in those areas. i think the area with the worst conditions today will really be

through union county. storm totals 6-12 inches, and we will combine that with 35 to 40-mile an hour winds. blizzard conditions on the eastern plains. light snow this morning, 20s around here with the clouds around here, and you are going to see a bit of sun every now and then during the day. just trace amounts for northern colorado an inch or two here. in the mountain areas, mostly on the ridge line, the northwest and the north-facing ridge lines, an inch or two of new snow today. the big story today, roads, even open? amelia with the latest on that. we have the full list of closures. the eastern plains and the south and especially the east. you wake up this and you wonder morning commute. the window to the world here. yes, very slow traffic. we are seeing the grooves of the traffic separating there.

roads, and the plows are coming through to clear the conditions for us. still to tough to make out the specific lanes of traffic. as mentioned, we have several significant closures across the state. 70 shut down from air park to kansas. and loveland pass to 86, highway 287, and these are really just five of about 25 significant closures. not too bad to get down to the downtown commute, and town northbound 25, a wreck there, around 20th, and a couple of side street issues, but overall, we are just talking about volume. now we will led out live with tarhonda thomas. >> reporter: amelia i'm on i- 25, but before i let you see ther and state, this is the side street behind me. it's pretty well plowed for a side street, but what you need to pay attention to, the neighborhood streets and

building up, and right here this is what you're dealing with in your front yard. it's chin deep, and it's hard to get through. have your snow boots ready. school is canceled, but getting through that, go through the interstate, and you're driving to work today. we know not everyone is off to work today. a lot of snow pack on the roads, and in between off to the right, and cars seem to be moving well, but that's because there's not that many cars on the roads. if volume build, we know this will be a slow, slow area. the whole interstate, if there's a lot of people who have to go to work today, not everyone has the day off. the snow continues to grow, and it looks like the flakes are fatter than the last 30 minutes. stay out here, and we will bring you more throughout the morning. and now to colleen.

and now we find her at d.i.a. >> reporter: there's so much snow here on the runway at denver international airport, and they have a serious intricate operation doing on to take the snow off the runway. they are deicing it here. a rare advantage point we can show you here. heath montgomery is joining us. >> reporter: i'm seeing planes take off in the distance, you're doing something right here (. >> we several hundred people out here this morning. we are on the ramp area right now, and they are clearing out the snow we received overnight. we got about 7 inches as of 11:00, and even more since then. they are doing a great job of keeping the ramps area and the airplanes are taking off. we have seen 125 flight cancellations this morning. not expecting that to change a lot, but we are keeping a close eye on the weather throughout the day. >> you said the faa is reporting significant delays, and you're getting the planes in the deicing process, out,

danger dan sent us this photo of the snow covering the cars. it will take awhile to clear that up, and parts of the foothills and the mountains have seen over a foot of snow. laurie sent in that picture of the snow piled up in her backyard, and the photos have really been impressive. animal shots, backyard shots, and you name it, and you have sent it in to us this morning. keep doing it. we want to update everyone son what is going on this morning apes we try to clean up as the storm moves out. remember, it's using #9wx. it will take awhile to do the cleanup, and it's a good thing we have the closures to help in the process. 578 closures this morning, including dps, jefferson county, englewood schools, and all the major ones. >> all the major school districts are closed, and we just heard the county and city offices in boulder are closed list on 9news.com.

red banner up there to get to the list, and we are scrolling screen, too. all right it is 6:39 right now, and we want to tell you hillary clinton and ted cruz are the winner from last night in the iowa caucuses. clinton got the win by less than a percentage point, and nbc called the race overnight about 2:00 this morning, and she and bernie sanders each get 20 delegates, and martin o'malley dropped out after vote. for the republicans, nbc news called the republican caucus for ted cruz. donald trump was in second, and marco rubio a surprisingly close third. huckabee dropping out after finishing back of the pack in the caucus. he won in '08. we will hear from brandon at 7:20 about what this means for the next step in the primary.

maybe he can do a weather to the there, too. >> maybe. so the odds of the person winning the caucus in iowa and going on to win the presidency, they are not highway. only jimmy carter, george w. bush, and barack obama have done that. snow locked down in boulder this morning, the last report i saw in boulder, a foot of snow. that was a couple of hours ago. that's an older report. we are seeing the snowfall apart in northern colorado here. it's snowing lightly around here. another inch or two before noon, and we will start to fall apart. moderate snow over the plains, and heavy snow with the core of the storm in nebraska and north western iowa. they have blizzard warnings from really just north of des moines into north western iowa into central and eastern nebraska, and additional snow today, statewide a little bit around here.

cdot crews worked throughout the night, and a this morning. amy, the whole fleet is out working 12-hour shifts? >> the whole fleet is out. that means nearly 900 plus plows out statewide. in areas like north eastern colorado we have 175 plows out there working on the roads. >> amy what are some of the biggest trouble spots in the metro area you have seen so far? >> reporter: the metro area is moving. i do have a lot of closures, but the plows are out there, working hard trying to clear off the snow pack, and they will keep up. we ask people to be very

elevated ramps or bridges. they are definitely icy. go slow as you go along. >> we have been following the snowplows on ctrip.org. >> reporter: we have nothing left to talk about. look at our website, and you won't want to talk to me about what the plows are doing. winds 25 to 50 miles an hour, and they have de facto blizzard nebraska. look at the visibility, the low around here was a mile to a mile and a half. you move to the plains, and it's a mile or less up and down highway 385. that's where we are seeing some of the worst conditions around here, and here we also have a bit of visibility. 9:00or 10:00, we will see things improve here, and that's about the time a lot of folks are arriving at work. >> we are seen such a light volume, i think people noticed the changes last night, listened to your forecast and said maybe with the school closures in effect, they are staying home with the kids this is not typical of a morning rush. the cars moving through here at 30 to 35 miles an hour, and you can see the lanes of traffic there, but throughout the day

across the map, plenty of crashes here to talk about. northbound 25, a wreck at 20, another southbound 25 at broadway, and this is a big one, parker and orchard. probably one of the busiest >> amelia, thank you. 6:47, and tomato we could find out if a sexual assault case against bill cosby will be going to trial. the comedian will be in a courtroom in philadelphia as charges dropped. cosby is facing criminal charges after a woman claims he drugged and sexual assaulted her in 2004. it's the only criminal case against him after more than 50 women have accused of cosby of assault, but the statue of limitations ran out on the others. a former detroit officer will learn how long he is going to sit in a cell for brutally meeting a man.

instead of talking about it, we are asking him about it. cheryl preheim is at the broncos owe hotel, and mike is there as well. we are talking all things peyton manning. >> reporter: absolutely. you know he's really the insider when he gets a 10- minute one-on-one with peyton manning for the busiest week of his life. yesterday was the same day the buses got into an accident, and the players are feeling the effects. >> they are. >> what happened, the police motorcade came up on a lady, and she was supposed to pull off, and she panicked and saw the sirens and stopped her car, and that caused the first bus to swerve to miss her, and then the second bus collided with the first bus. the third bus wound up bouncing off the two buss in front, and some players are saying haakes, body soreness, and no major injuries, no worry about that, but scary.

over here this morning, we are seeing the clouds break up, and there's a just a few know showers, the heavy jest snow over the extreme eastern plains colorado. the light snow continues here in the metro area, and it's really starting to fall apart for northern colorado. again, we are going to continue to see the winter storm warnings expire and fall apart, and it looks like we have an avalanche warning for south western colorado, and no surprise. 3feet of snow there.

continuing in the midwest today, temperatures teens, 20s, he's and best, and the single digits above and below 0. clearing skies already in the mountains, and again light snow this morning, and falling apart this afternoon, during the course of the afternoon, and you may still get flurries this afternoon, but most of the measurable snow is done by about 1:00 today. temperatures will not make it out of the 20s, and teens and 20s in the mountains and the foothills. the only place that could see the snow today, the west and northwest facing slopes, and the valley areas, generally partly cloud skies to start to clear out over the plains, and again, mountain ridgeline, an inch or two of snow, and an inch or two here for the rest of the morning. falling apart for the afternoon. slightly heavier amounts over the plains, and it will be extremely windy. 35 to 50-mile an hour winds, high in the 20s, 30s, and lower
