12:00 pm
this is 9news. hi, everybody. thanks for joining us here on 9news at noon. we will talk about the weather in just a minute. you know what it's like outside, but first let's go out to california where gary kubiak is going before reporters as we are now days away from the super bowl. let's listen in. is he there? he's coming up? okay. they are having a round of press conferences today out at the super bowl. of course the broncos are busy practicing, but they are also media. let's listen in to coach kubiak. >> i goes back and i know -- go back and i know what i was
12:01 pm
myself through and try to do too much and kind of ran myself in the ground a little bit so i've tried to do things different. i still -- i mean, i love to work, so i'm going up early in the morning working the hours but i've also tried to go about it in a different way, not to try to take on everything myself and understand i got good people with me and i think it's helped me. i think passing through baltimore, working with a great organization, a great staff there helped me, and i have taken a lot of that with me here to denver, so if anything, john, it will just change how i do things more than anything. >> could you clear up the bus accident? did you have any players report any injuries at all? >> no, jeff. obviously it scared some guys, you know, i mean, i think anytime you go through something like that, there were some guys that were a little, you know -- went through a tough situation but, you know, after going through every guy
12:02 pm
great job, got them back here, checked them owl ought ash -- all out and we feel fortunate, everybody is fine. and even not our players but the officer and other people are doing fine. i think we are good, ready to go. i think that's behind us and behind us the right way because everybody is okay. that's the good thing. >> do you expect t.j. -- impact after spending the season with them, has t.j. made on this defense? >> i think they both have a huge impact on our defense. t.j. was a leader in place when we got here, you're asking me do i be on the practice field but t.j. had been a leader on this team before, i think we found another leader when we signed these two and i think he earned his keep as we went through this season. that was a tough secondary to break in because it was a strong group but we can't on
12:03 pm
they can cover, you know, so gives us a chance to be a little bit more flexible as a defensive football team, but, yes, we expect them both to be ready to go. >> serena williams -- how disappointing -- you had some good teams in houston but how disappointing -- >> we will continue to monitor this, we know peyton manning is expected to speak shortly so we are going to continue on with the newscast, monitor the press conference and when peyton starts speaking, we will go to that. he did a lot of speaking last night at the media night but he's going to say more today. right now let's talk with belen de leon who is out in the back yard monitoring the system which seems to be winding down. there's still snowflakes coming down. >> especially out here in the back yard. i'm going to show you doppler right now and you will see where that snow is falling the heaviest of it is out towards the eastern plains still with some pretty strong winds. but even though we have very light snow falling over the city right now, still causing some visibility issues. we can't see the mountains at
12:04 pm
you know, the center of the storm has pushed off into the great plains but it's a big system that's affecting the midwest into our northern plains and we are getting the wraparound snow bands from the backside of this system. i talked to my sister-in-law, nebraska, she goes, it is howling out here where they have blizzard conditions right now in gran island back -- grand island back in colorado. light snow around the metro area and pretty strong winds and heavy snow bands still out towards the eastern plains. here are a couple of preliminary snow reports in parker, a little more than 10 inches so far, loveland 12 and sterling 6 inches. the snow reports are going to keep coming and we've got a list of all of them on 9news.com. but everybody's question is when is the snow going to stop? well, in some spots it already has. we are still expecting for that snow to continue out towards the eastern plains where a winter storm warning will remain in effect until 4:00 this afternoon. some flurries in the city. i think it's going to wrap up before that afternoon and
12:05 pm
we've got very icy and snowpacked roads. now, the temperatures right now under this cloud cover are in the 20s, teens closer to the foothills, our highs are only going to be in the upper 20s. we will see a 30-degree temperature but folks into this evening as these cloudy skies start to clear up, that's when our temperatures are really going to drop so i'll walk you through that forecast coming up in just a few. and, kyle, right now i'm seeing a little bit of that sunshine trying to peek out from behind the clouds. >> really? i want to come back out and see the sun. at the, belen. hundreds of flights are cancelled today out at dia. yesterday was the case as well. yesterday cancelled. here's a look right now at what they do at dia to get the planes ready, all the de-icing. the good news when it comes to staying on top of a storm, this airport seems to know what to do. crews did a great job this morning getting the planes that were still going out de-iced
12:06 pm
cdot crews have been out yesterday to keep the roads and highways as clear as possible and we are hearing the crews aren't going anywhere even though the snow is tapering off. cdot tells us their crews are having to do multiple sweeps of the same spots on these roadways because of the heavy and wet snow. and also i-70 east to kansas, that's going to be closed probably throughout this evening. who knows about tomorrow because even though things are winding down here, they are really going as belen mentioned to the east of us, especially around in the kansas area along i-70, so there it's a big problem. so expect travel conditions to be dicey throughout the rest of the day. the snow totals really depend louisville received 14 inches of snow, elizabeth about 17, denver, we are right around 10. that kind of snow makes it really hard for people who park on side streets. now, this time around denver public works, amelia is going to go through the side streets
12:07 pm
that's so good to hear for so many of us. >> reporter: it really is, kyle and the goal for denver public works according to nancy kuhn, who is their communication director is to make one center swipe down all of the residential side streets and the goal here is not go all the way down to the pavement level but swipe down so there's enough snow to keep the ice from forming. we have seen a couple crews transition through this area and you can see it's not quite down to the pavement but that slush as more cars drive out and about is definitely turning now from pure ice to kind of a wet slushy mix. now, as far as the rest of the trucks go, there's about 80 of them out across the residential side streets, they are smaller trucks with plows attached to the front end and they are going to cover about 1300 miles of lane there. as for the bigger trucks that are out across the main streets like areas of parker or mlk, there are 70 of those separate trucks and they are going to cover the bigger areas so the larger trucks and they are covering about 1800 lane miles so as you head out and about
12:08 pm
have to do plenty of shoveling, eight to 10 inches here in the west wash park area and we have seen plenty of folks out doing that today with all the school closures and -- >> it's heavy snow when you're shoveling and so much of it. >> reporter: yeah, very heavy and wet and as it starts to melt we are seeing how much water is here and it's going to be all over the place. >> i hate to think of what's going to happen tonight when all of that gets colder and icier. thank you for going out. we appreciate it. politicswise, boy, it was a real nail biter last night. the iowa caucuses. you won't believe what some precincts had to do in order to decide a winner on the democratic side. also, it's still really cold out there but look at this guy. look at that guy wearing those
12:09 pm
it's groundhog day. punxsutawney phil predicted an early spring but at least here in colorado we got a little bit more of winter in our extended forecast to talk about. first let's take a look at these wind speeds. now, why am i focusing on the winds? winds out towards the eastern per hour. you factor that in with the whiteout conditions. now, this, it's not all that impressive but this is whiteout, folks. that's a picture sent in by one of our twitter followers. you can't see anything in flagler right now where the winds are so strong and that snow is still falling. a look at where the snow is right now, it's light over the front range and we've got heavier bands that are set up on the eastern plains and the
12:10 pm
off into kansas but it's causing some big time travel problems not only in colorado but all the way into the midwest. a closer look at where that snow is falling, i-70 stretch into burlington and kansas, that one is a doozie, still have a winter storm warning in this afternoon. 21 is the temperature out at dia, those winds at 18 miles per hour making it feel like the single digits. out here in the back yard, the snow is lightly falling, our temperatures are at 17 degrees, let's check the weather across the state, starting off with the temps in northern colorado we've got 20s, 20s here, 20s there, 20s down there, teens and 20s in the high country and into this afternoon our highs are only going to get into the teens in some spots in the mountains with more 20s in lower elevations so it goes without saying it's going to be a cold day if you haven't made it out of the house just yet. i'm going to step out of the frame for a second to show you the preliminary snow reports
12:11 pm
between eight to 16 inches around the metro area and for the front range at dia, we got 10.4 so a pretty -- okay, all right, my producer is speaking in my ear as we are taking a look at these dogs playing in the snow, we are actually going to toss it over to santa clara the podium. >> and i was injured i wanted to throw in the indoor facility and the best time to do that was before practice and kind of during meetings and the only player that would be available to, you know, run a rout, you couldn't get emanuel or dt was going to be jordan taylor, the guy on the practice squad and jordan was great. i really have to commend him because he was running routs for me and then he was going
12:12 pm
plays scout team wide receiver safety. he plays on both sides of the ball and here i am out there putting him through a pretty say one more. i am bad to say, hey, just one more post rout, just one more 20-yard comeback rout and but he worked hard and was really helpful to me and i really appreciate his efforts. >> now you're matched up in a match-up with another member -- how cool is that to be in that match-up that's never really happened before, despite the fact you guys don't really play each other. >> we don't play against each other, but it's a great match- up between two great football teams and the broncos and the panthers and so that's where the match-up is, but talking about cam niewnt -- newton, he was the number 1 pick a couple
12:13 pm
career at auburn and like i said yesterday, he's off to an incredible start, his young nfl career and he's definitely earning that honor of being the number 1 pick by being the player that he is. [ inaudible question ] >> i want to thank all of our military, all of our troops, we appreciate your support, we thank you of you -- we think of you, we are thankful for your sacrifice and service to our country and we are very grateful and hope you cheer for the broncos on sunday. [ inaudible question ] >> no. >> carolina's second, have you seen anything from them that is
12:14 pm
i would imagine not a lot of defense -- >> what's the question? >> anything unique out of carolina's defense? >> it's a very active secondary. they do a lot of different things, play a lot of different coverages, all of them, you know, blitz, all of them are part of blitz packages as well, zone well. coached. very well. you see them talking out there and all those things are very evident on the game field. >> they lead the league in forced turnover. what about the start of this game? what do you have to do to get them out of their rhythm? >> you always want to get off to a good start any game that you play. it doesn't mean if you don't get off to a good start that you cannot still win the game, but there's no doubt the last two games, they haven't gotten off to a good start. they have gotten off to great
12:15 pm
seattle and arizona in a hole and they were playing the catchup game starting in the first quarter and that's not ideal against any team, it's not ideal in the playoff game and it's not ideal against a team that's won 17 games this year. so that will be something that we certainly want to do. it's easier said than done but it's still -- it's -- you know, i think the goal is to try to start well but certainly to try to finish even better. [ inaudible question ] >> one more time. do i say what? >> if you're -- [ inaudible question ] >> i still don't really
12:16 pm
and so it's hard to do kind of what if hypotheticals, but if we are not playing well i'll probably say something like, hey, let's go, let's play a little better. [ inaudible question ] >> well, we are still back in media day today and i've got a couple more days after it, so i look forward to the football practices kind of getting back underway starting tomorrow. although i thought we had a good day yesterday. i thought we had a good start, which always something kind of a challenge traveling to a new place and practicing at an unfamiliar place and so the fact that we went there on monday is a good thing so therefore wednesday everybody will kind of know the routine of where we are and where the practice fields are, so -- but i thought it was a good start to the week and certainly be
12:17 pm
wednesday, thursday and friday. >> peyton, you have worked your whole life to control as much about this game as you can possibly control. researching teammates and [ indiscernible ] >> yeah, i don't know if -- control is your word. i don't know if i would use that word. i think as a quarterback, i think it's your job to prepare to have an appreciation and respect for the cerebral part of the game, try to find some type of edge and, you know, for me, i always try to find some type of edge from the cerebral part as a student of the game, but i think that has been pretty consistent, you know, throughout my career, but i think you have to be able to
12:18 pm
playing with, based on the head coach that you're playing for, the system that you're in and like i shared yesterday, i played 18 years, played for five different head coaches, i've played in a couple of systems with a lot of different teammates and i think the fact that i have been flexible, been willing to learn new things, try new things, take different styles of coaching, i think that has helped me. >> peyton you had to prepare for three other super bowls. preparation is such a big part of you who you are. does any part of you have to guard against not overpreparing over the two weeks? >> i think there's probably something to that. not for me, but probably for anybody. you certainly have more time to prepare than you normally would, usually you have one week and even if you have a bye week in the middle of the season you're not spending that bye week working on the next opponent. you're using it to physically rest and, you know, even get away, if you will, so i think it's helped in this situation
12:19 pm
that we are not very familiar with, it's not a team we play, you know, on a regular basis, played them three years ago but a lot of different players on both sides of the ball since then. so i think having the two weeks does help considering the fact that you do have to spend a little bit of time, you know, kind of setting your travel plans and, you know, trying to get some tickets for some high school buddies and some college buddies and -- which is actually a fun part of it. you know, i got some high school buddies, some college buddies coming to the game that have been to every other super bowl that i have played in, these are guys that i have known since i was a little kid and have special friendships and relationships with, so it's -- it is fun when you call them and say, hey, got a couple seats for you, do you want to go?
12:20 pm
have a couple extra days to be able to take care of that and then get into your preparation. >> who are those guys that -- [ inaudible question ] >> eli has helped me out. he's helped me out in every super bowl that i have been in. i have helped him out as well, so it's nice having a sibling who is in the same business that can help you get a few extra tickets. >> who are the old friends who are coming? >> well, they prefer that i kept them nameless. they didn't want to draw a lot of attention to themselves on this super bowl week, but like i said, i appreciate the friendships that i have, like said from those high school and college guys and i talked to coach this week, my college coach and talked to my high
12:21 pm
tony ridge nelly -- riginelli and i think when you do play in a game like this, it's hard not to think about coaches that have had an impact on you and have helped you get in this position, i talked to jim caldwell, tony dungy, jim mora, john fox so i'm grateful and thankful for all the coaches that i played for and i wouldn't be in this position today for all -- if not had -- had i not learned something from all the different coaches that i have had. >> copeland, it was a great teammate, great -- >> there's peyton manning. i bet some of his high school friends who haven't gotten a call from him are probably going to call him now, saying hey can we get tickets to the super bowl. he's talking about his preparations for not only the game itself but also in terms of getting friends and family sunday. we will continue to monitor the press conference and bring you more stuff from santa clara throughout the day here on
12:22 pm
a final look at that forecast because we want to stop. flurries around the city throughout the rest of the afternoon. out towards the eastern plains a winter storm warning continues until about 4:00 p.m. it's this evening when the skies clear, then our temperatures are really going to drop. in the high country still going to see light snow showers but nothing in comparison to what we have had over the past few days. temperatures tonight will drop
12:23 pm
lows across the state could get to below zero in some mountain valleys, so, you know, they are used to that kind of weather. they got to prep for it, it doesn't mean it's okay, it's still a very cold night ahead. 30s for the next several days, saturday 45, sunday 39 as we look ahead to the forecast for super bowl 50, beautiful, lots of sunshine for them in santa clara. >> is it too late for us to go? >> i don't have enough money to plan a trip there. >> we could still plan a trip there and back.
