fantastic looking morning around here. temperatures, teens, 20s, 30s in eastern colorado. we have some of the typical cold air drainage into the mountain valleys right now. you're seeing readings at or above freezing. we have a down slope wind. it's not going to be windy downtown. we're seeing 20, 30 mile-per- hour winds in the foothills. planning out your morning, the rally, be in the 40s by the time you get things going. the rally is at 1:00 this afternoon. for the rest of us, good looking day. foothills, mid-50s around the metro area. just slightly cooler in northern colorado. really fantastic day. if you would remember this time last week, gary, we were in the middle of this much snow. >> we had to dress a little warmer. >> too much fun. >> all right. thank you much. it is a minute after 6:00. the city is buzzing in anticipation this morning.

biggest celebration of denver history. today we celebrate the super bowl champion denver broncos. amelia earhart is going to tell you what you need to know about the parking and getting to the downtown area. we start with tarhonda thomas. she's at civic center park. hundreds of thousands of people are going to join you in a couple of hours. >> reporter: hundreds of thousands, maybe millions. i'm with the first group. the soto family. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> reporter: patricia is the matriarch here. you're the grandmother. you brought the grandkids out. >> yes, i did. >> how did you get them all up this early? i can't get my kids out of bed. >> i told them last night, get your butt up. we're going this morning. >> what did you think when your grandmother said, you're going comes up? >> i thought it was going to be cold.

at 10:00. we're going see the concerts, all the entertainment. then at noon we're going to see the parade kickoff. it's at union station to broadway and end up right here at the city and county building. it will be at 1:00 when that's over. you're saying if you want the come out, come out early. make sure you don't bring any chairs or big bags. they want to keep this family friendly. no alcohol or anything like that. do what the soto family is going. they're keeping it nice and friendly. >> go broncos. >> reporter: i have a weather expert for me that can tell me, it's not going to stay this cold? >> no. >> what is the forecast going to be? >> warm. >> how are you going to stay warm? >> jumping jacks. i feel it. feel the burn. all right. so come on out and join the soto family for the rally. this is going to be huge. when you come out, you have to

get here and get around the traffic. no traffic the morning, right? >> right. >> that's good. >> that's good? well, there's going to be traffic later today. let's talk to amelia earhart on how to get around it. amelia, go to you in the studio. >> amelia, go to you in the studio. oh, that's awesome. we love the enthusiasm. we also like folk who is plan ahead. at least two hours before the 10:00 a.m. start, right in the downtown corridor, i-25, 70, all expected to be very, very busy. now, i've put together what i'm calling the hot zone here. where do we expect to see those delays. the big circle, colfax, spear, 25 and 70, let's talk about how it breaks down. the parade kicks off in front of union station.

up at civic center. download our 9news app. it's completely free. all the resources are online, including which routes change throughout the morning. >> 1 million people. it is going to be a huge party, amelia. thank you. parking will be at a premium if you plan to drive to the parade. there are other options you can leave your car at home. by light rail you can get to the convention center. that's six blocks from civic center park. the ce and w lines run normally to union station. by car, train, bus, bike, on foot, plan to leave early. many of your usual bus routes will look different today. denver police ask them to detour around the parade route to get passengers as close as possible. you can see the affected line on the screen to your right right now. rtd expects the detours to begin by 9:00 a.m.

civic center park and union station. they plan to suspend sixth street mall service as crowds grow as well. denver is ready to party like it's 1999, the last time the team paraded and partied with the lombardi trophy. the streets downtown were packed. an estimated 650,000 people filled the streets. today the city is anticipating close to a million people. all right. the if you can't make it out to the parade, you can watch the entire celebration. we've got you covered. 9news will be on at 10:00 a.m. our live coverage will last until 3:00. we'll stream the coverage online at 9news.com. six minutes after six right now. monta ball will not be facing charges in a domestic violence case. yesterday prosecutors charged ball with disorderly conduct for an incident at a hotel in wisconsin last week. his girlfriend told police they

in the hair, and she landed on a table, cutting her leg. she was charged with misdemeanor battery for allege lid striking the woman on the -- allegedly striking the woman in the face five days earlier. the nfl is going to prevent combine. the league is going to ban athletes from the event if they have been convicted of sexual assault, domestic violence, or any weapons offenses. prospects who refuse a background check will also not be able to participate. new this morning a huge rescue effort is happening in southern germany after two trains collided head on. it happened 40 miles southeast of munich in a hard to reach area. the train is wrapped around trees and branches. crews had a tough time reaching all of the passengers inside. 8 people are dead and 150 at least are injured.

time to brake before they hit head on. this morning we're hearing stories of survival from this week's earthquake in taiwan. he and a girlfriend were in their apartment when it hit. he wedged himself into a space, but after 20 ours began to lose strength and fell on top of his girlfriend. soon after, rescuers found the pair and pulled them out to safety. this nation's first presidential primary is under way. voters this new hampshire are morning. candidates are making last- second pitches. noel brennan is tracking all of this in the newsroom. noel, the first votes have already been tallied? >> they sure have. those small towns opened and closed them. it's a tradition in new hampshire. this year marking 100 years for

at the stroke of midnight, nine ballots were dropped into a box in dixville notch, new hampshire. it's the first in the primary state. >> on the democratic side, the latest tracking poll shows the race is bernie sanders to lose. he's up 26 points over hillary clinton. >> i will ask you respectfully to please consider giving me the chance to do this job for you. >> donald trump is up big among republican voters, but john kasich and jeb bush are hoping to get a bump after marco rubio's less than stellar debate performance. >> people are looking not only to understand what is in your head, but they also want to know what's in your heart. if you're just scripted, i'm not sure people respond to that. >> they want to know what leadership skills they have rather than how you are turning

>> voters still have to turn out. while some candidates are focused now on bigger states this, morning all eyes will be on new hampshire. >> and new hampshire is expecting a huge turnout today. in fact, the secretary of state predicts more than half a million people. greg, that's about two-thirds of all the voters in new hampshire. >> it will be interesting to see if the weather has any impact today. 6:10. today president obama will be releasing his 2017 fiscal year proposal. this will be his final one as he prepares to leave office next winter. he believes his budget will have little chance to be adopted as they face stiff opposition from the house. a new government report finds that colorado is one of eight states that saw a pretty big drop last year and the number of people without health insurance. florida, california, illinois, kentucky, michigan, and new

all but florida accepted a medicaid exception. the woman who bought echo mountain resort with plans to develop it into a private ski and training area has filed for bankruptcy protection. the original business plan has not panned out as expected, but the owner is shifting her focus. she's optimistic about the future and says business is pretty strong. the business will continue to operate as normal while it restructures all of its debt. slightly warmer around town than normal in colorado. this is the beginning beginning of an extended dry spell that could last until the end of next week. though we'll be warm today, it's going to be even warmer tomorrow with temperatures moving around the 50s and 60s. today i think we're good for mid-50s around here. in the planning forecast, 60 >> that's nice. >> marty, thank you.

as we look at the satellite view, we'll see snow showers in central nebraska. that's going the the eastern most extent of the cold air. it's going to make it halfway through nebraska. as we look west there's nothing between here and the west coast. that kind of tells you what the next couple of days of weather is going to be like. cold air does continue to pour in from central canada into the upper midwest, minnesota, wisconsin, and the great lakes, and they're going to get another big surge of cold air on friday, and we'll be spared by that. heading out the door in the mountain valleys, again, the

with temperatures in the single digits above and below zero in many locations. we have a big spread of temperatures there with low 30s in the nice weak down sloping wind. sunshine today, we've seen the highs. mid-50s here, upper 40s, low 50s up north. mostly in the 40s and foothills. we'll run the wind at 30 miles per hour in the foothills today. the only place i can see a few clouds would be in the northeast corner of colorado during the day. again, they're relatively close to the cool air borders. we'll keep it in the low 40s for ft. morgan. mild from the mountains and mild here down into southeast. tomorrow is the warmest day of the week, but saturday is not brief cooldown. clouds thursday. cooler air on friday and then a nice spike coming back to start off the weekend. it's looking like another

>> you got that right, marty. colorado, we just won the super bowl. feels like a holiday. sky 9 has been zipping around to the north side. sky 9 is going to be up and over the parade today so you can see the aerial views as well as. plenty of movement on the freeways and side streets. we're kicking traffic off accident free. the first crash is up and out of there. this is the first slowdown. we're still in the 30s approaching 84th avenue. >> thanks so much, amelia. so many americans in their prime earning years don't own a house right now. what is keeping them from ownership, a report just released, 31% cite not being able to afford a down payment.

preventing them from getting a mortgage. a lot of people are unaware that that are assistance programs available. the state awe more than $132 million in super bowl bets. the most in at least a decade. gamblers, however, lost 10% of that money because they went with the panthers. that will learn them. that's the second biggest win for casinos in sports books in about ten years. $4billion was bet illegally on super bowl 50. we talked a lot about peyton manning's two mentions of bud budweiser after the win on sunday, it's zoomed $5 million according to the firm that analyzes the value of brands and celebrity mentions. there's a potential boost for manning as well as. beer business daily, manning owns a stake in a budweiser distributor in his home state

it's 6:20 right now. investigators are released key evidence. they released this video that shows a handoff between two people dressed. authorities say was likely the bomb. the video shows them handing it to the alleged suicide bomber, investigators say at least one of the suspects does work for the airport. the eventual explosion sucked the bomb out of the plane. thats will nothing to do with her music. new york congressman pete king calls the video pro black panther and anticop. king also says the video perpetuates a lie about the 2014 shooting michael brown in ferguson, missouri. king calls beyonce a gifted entertainer but says, quote, no one should really care what she thinks about any serious issue.

it is 6:21 right now. the alligator is not on the menu at the wendy's restaurants, but one of the chains restaurants in florida had to deal with an alligator live. it happened in palm beach. a guy threw the alligator through the restaurant's drive- through window after he placed an order. he faces charges for aggravated assault and unlawful possession in transportation of a gator. his parents say it was just a harmless prank. >> oh, my gosh. can you imagine is this. >> pay parentally not. >> the worker -- apparently not. >> the worker was scared. >> the size of the dog, he needs a good home, but he's not full grown yet. the story behind this viral sensation, coming up. first, let's check in on the weather and traffic. here. quality. we keep the wind in the foothills for the most part. downtown, single digit wind

so it should be very comfortable in and around downtown. again, looking at the parade and rally for you today. temperatures starting in the low 50s around noon and into the mid-50s between 2:00 and 3:00 this afternoon. for those of you who may not get to go, the rest of the day is looking just fine around here. later this evening, we're going stay way above freezing as everybody is driving home. >> as we head up to sky 9 now, in just a few minutes, we're going to see that view from above. nice conditions are still in place. there's not a single problem across the city other than the high winds out across 285 near kenosha pass. you can see great conditions are in place along 70. 270 is just a little loaded up. southbound 25, as a result to break starting at 120th down to about 84th avenue with speeds in the 30s. if you're waking up in colorado

an animal charity is scotland is trying to find a home with a giant bunny. meet atlas. he's only 7 months old. he's about the size of a west highland terrier. he's not full grown. atlas loves attention and cuddles. he's curious and loves to make you laugh. just look at those massive ears. the charity needs to find atlas a specific home because of his breed and size. they're looking for someone who is looking for a continental rabbit before. apparently they can get up to 4 feet long and 55 pounds. >> do they need somebody with a big house the take care of it.

downtown safely will be there. 25, 70, university, colorado, and spear, especially. of course our downtown side streets are going to be sluggish. the parade kicks off at 17th 17th and win coop. right down from union station to broadway, transitions southbound to civic center park and, of course, all of the local side streets will be loaded up with people trying to find parking spots. now, up to a million people are expected. a two-hour earlier approval is what everyone is saying you need to do to get there with the time to park and get down to find the perfect park location. after parking, city side streets will have to pay, like normal. make sure you're not parking with unauthorized lots or just everybody. folks helping out. >> that is for sure. thank you very much.

he used his taser but the suspect shot him. about an hour later, the 17- year-old was taken into custody. he remains in critical condition at the hospital. colorado state patrol needs your help this morning trying to find out a pickup truck driver they say hit a person and took off. he was lying in the road in adams county last night when a brown color pickup truck ran him over. he later died at the hospital. troopers bebelieve the driver may have never seen the man. >> it is 6:35. new hampshire is expecting a huge turnout for today's state presidential primary. the first primary in the country, secretary of state expects up to half a million people to head to the polls and cast their ballots today. noel brennan joins us in the information center to talk about the first votes that were cast at midnight. some of these tiny communities cast their votes at midnight. they close the polls and tally up all of the votes.

for second between marco rubio, ted cruz, and john kasich. as we saw in iowa, those polls don't always predict the winner. >> it's true. noel, thank you. congress will ask -- zika virus is alleged to cause birth defects in babies being born with abnormally small heads. pregnant women and anyone who is concerned for their health should not consider going to the games in august. the usoc added that while zika virus is a threat, it should not prevent them from competing if they wish to. there were 307 intentional homicide in workplaces across the country. that's according to the u.s. department of labor.

you never want to think about the worst happening, but you need to be prepared for whatever comes your way. colleen, today you're demonstrating what to do in a few different emergency situations. >> today, we're encouraging you to sit down with your co- workers co-workers. we spent some time with arvada police. they helped us develop a plan of action in case some type of situation were to happen here. >> there's an emergency situation happening here and in our newsroom. call the police. what do we do when they get there. >> we want to make sure this is a real event. as soon as we believe that's taking place, someone is here to hurt us, we have three choices. we can evacuate, we can evade or defend ourselves. the first thing is to evacuate.

who wants to cause you arm. >> just get as far away from the danger as possible. >> distance is your friend. >> so, my honest first reaction would be to go under my desk and hide, but then i'm stagnate, waiting for the danger to go to me. find a room to go into, turn off the lights, lock the door. call 911, make sure you're inside so you can hide, and that will buy you time until police get there. there's one last thing our expert said you can do. >> last and probably the hardest to wrap our head around, if it's a moment in time, defend yourself with whatever means you have available to you. you make a promise to yourself that your life is important, that you're not going to let someone hurt you, and then you defend yourself by all means possible. >> so, guys, every workplace is different. you need to talk to your co-

do in the newsroom here. adrenaline is rushing in that moment of time. that's why you need to have a plan to become second nature. greg, this is sometimes uncomfortable, a little scary to talk about. talking about it can make such a big difference. >> we've actually had a situation like that in the past. we've had to be prepared too. never hurts to have that awareness. could be another wild ride for the markets today. futures have turned a lot lower in just the last hour. japan selling off sharply overnight. down 5%. there's concern about the global economic slowdown. stocks dropped after big worries about the health of european banks. huge supply of gasoline is flooding the markets still. it's driving down wholesale gas prices and what we pay at the pump.

coming in at $1.59 in denver. that's almost 40 cents cheaper than a gallon a year ago. it may not last longer. even if oil prices continue to fall, refineries cannot make much money in this kind of market. that's why analysts think they will take this opportunity to shut down and perform maintenance. when that happens, it will mean higher prices at the pump. last week at this time, we were in the middle of a perfectly good snow storm. 11.6-inches at dia. we still need another 7 to get into the top five. it's going to be a while before we see anything. by the way, last year at 22.4- on record. it's dry, clear. teens, 20s, 30s. focused a little bit in southwest colorado. wide range of temperatures. notice colder in the valleys than at the top. so it's warm air going around here. that's going to work its way

for the parade and rally today. clear conditions. it will be shaded along 17th. so, again, i feel a little bit cool to you, but i still think temperatures will make it into the low 50s by the time we start the parade. wind gusts mostly stay in the foothills today. single digits in the morning and during the afternoon. if you're looking ahead to your evening, driving out of downtown, whether it's work, home school, or the big rally today, we stay above freezing through the dinner hour with generally clear conditions around here. things looking great for now. but these light commutes couldn't last forever. we are looking at a new problem down to the south side. we're getting word of an i-25 accident. we heard this may be a possible closure with all lanes blocked. we have not confirmed that with anyone yet. we have a call in. stay tuned for the next update.

he doesn't have pierced ears. >> and he is sending us a hundred cases of turkey sausage for our shelters. so we won the bet. >> that's a win-win for sure. when the parade and everything happens, where are you going to be? >> oh, no. we lost the governor. >> well, we'll find out where the governor is going to be. >> he's wearing an emmanuel sanders jersey. >> i didn't know about the earring. that's a big part. >> so he's going to get his ear pierced. hopefully broncos quarterback peyton manning loves parades. he was in one yesterday as well. this one at the happiest place on earth. a day before the super bowl parade here in denver. peyton was treated to a special disneyland parade along main street, usa.

kids, marshall and mostly got to be part of the fun as well. you can see the crowd is all orange. >> almost ten years later, have my kids here with me in that parade. ashley is riding space mountain right now. that tells you what fans we are of the disneyland experience. so i'm proud to finally say i'm a part of it. >> space mountain is my favorite ride at disneyland. you can't get anything past the internet. what a lot of people are talking about is this. the official super bowl hat peyton was wearing during the postgame celebration had an upside down velcro strip with championship upside down. >> we would only notice that because of the internet. >> so peyton manning has inspired a lot of football players, including russell wilson.

it may be doing something right. that's the way our weekend looks right now. >> it's 6:56. here is a look at some of the top stories. mesa county deputy is in critical condition after a teenager shot him several times. yesterday morning deputy derrick gere got out on a foot chase. he caught the suspect an used his taser on him. then the suspect shot him. the 17-year-old was arrested about an hour later. deputy gere is in critical condition. >> a man lying in the road was hit and killed. and now state troopers are looking for the driver who did it. a brown colored pickup truck ran over the man near pacos and west 65th street last night. troopers believe the driver may have never seen the man. he died at the hospital. exbroncos running back monta ball is not going to face
