arapahoe county sheriff's department officials say just after 5:00 this morning they received a phone call from a woman at an apartment complex on east harvard avenue in denver and claimed her partner was sexually assaulting her at knife point. when police arrived, the apartment seemed very quiet. that's when homicide investigators discovered a 6- year-old child dead. 9 news reporter ryan harra has more. >> reporter: neighbors are very disturbed about what happened here early this morning. it was about 5:00 a.m. when the arapahoe county sheriff's office responded to a call of a woman being sexually assaulted by knife point by what they are calling her domestic partner right now. about an hour later, deputies got a team together to make an entrance into the apartment. that's when they found that 6- year-old boy dead. they also found a man with what

knife wounds. there is also a 2-year-old boy in the apartment. he was not harmed. deputies tell us the 2-year-old child is the couple's child and that the dead 6-year-old boy is the man's child. neighbors say they see kids running around this area all the time. and for some, it hits home. >> my heart sunk. i have kids myself. and i can't imagine what this mother is going through right now. my son is on his way to school. and all i can think about right now is thank god. >> reporter: right now, this is a very active crime scene. the man, the woman, and the 2- year-old, all went to the hospital, and we do not have an update on their condition right now. we are hoping to later in the day. one big question in all of this, is the time line of events. deputies say the woman didn't give any indication that anyone else was in immediate harm, her. that's why it took them some home.

deputies together to go in and approach what could be a dangerous situation. we are trying to gather more information about everybody involved, we are hoping to have more information, either on 9 news .com or during our later newscast. in arapahoe county, 9 news. an arapahoe county sheriff's deputy was on the way to the apartment complex when he was hurt in a wreck at iliff and south valencia. authorities say the deputy did not know the call he was responding to was a homicide. four people including the deputy were seriously injured and then taken to a nearby hospital. greeley police are investigating a shooting that happened late tuesday night near 26th and 13th. they say the woman involved might have been hallucinating at the time. police say 45-year-old kelly barnes is accused of shooting weapons at random, in her apartment, before taking off, with her two children. and police later found barnes and the kids at a store in the 2800 block of 10th street. barnes was arrested, and is being held right now at the

charges, including child abuse, murder. the kids were released to a family member. so far, we have not heard of anyone being injured by the random gunfire. all right. let's take a look outside. it is so nice. we do have wind out there. but i don't think many people are complaining right now, because the temperatures are so nice. like they were yesterday. danielle is in the backyard. i should say though that the ski resorts going into a holiday weekend, hoping for some more snow and not the warm weather. >> they are begging for it, kyle. and it is not really looking good for them. good for us if you're a fan of the heat. downtown denver, soaring into the 60s. it is going to be a wild day for your hair, but the wind is to be quieting down later on today. we will take a look, because you can see the difference from this time yesterday, to now. we are 19 degrees warmer. and yesterday wasn't too shabby, either. we are looking at 11 degrees warmer out there in fort collins and where now, they are sitting at 57. we are at 63, out there at

a little bit warmer here downtown. already surging into the 70s for pueblo, trinidad, and springfield. and out to the west, 20s and 30s at this noon hour. the winds have been howling. absolutely. in that 30 mile-an-hour range. from boulder, as well as broomfield, all to dumont and the loveland pass area. it is a gusty afternoon. if have you been heading up to the foothills, the high country, know what you're getting yourself into. it will be windy. it will be clear. just great. on doppler 9, nothing to write home about. a few more clouds pushing into the metro area later on. temperatures though staying in the 50s for that evening drive. roll the windows down. get in some of that fresh air, and you will love it. spring fever, it is going on, in the middle of february and feeling fine. snow any time soon, and the forecast, we will let you know what we think about that. and of course, we are talking about valentine's day, this sunday, kyle. and we actually have a little storm system coming in and let you know if that means rain or >> okay.

prevent these problems from happening again. the u.s. house just passed a bill to tighten control of a big project, like the v.a. hospital in aurora and the bill would affect project has would cost more than $100 million. and it also says the v.a. would have to let the u.s. army corps of engineers, or another federal agency, manage the project. the legislation passed a voice vote in the house yesterday. and now it is off to the senate for consideration. in fort collins, police are looking into a stabbing that happened in a midtown duplex. and it sent two women to the medical center for the rockies. one suspect is in custody. police say no other suspects are being sought right now. this happened though overnight. on stover. and west prospect. there are very few details out about the extent of the injuries. or a potential motive. in southern colorado, theres with an overnight fire that heavily damaged the state's oldest catholic parish. this is video of the church

profiled our lady of guadalupe church during our hispanic heritage series. church officials are telling 9 news today that the fire started in the back the church, in an area that was added on to the original church building. they say there is smoke damage in the church, and that all future church services will be held over at nearby st. augustine until further notice. and today is a big day for catholics, considering it is ash wednesday, the start of lent, and our lady of guadalupe was founded 152 years ago, by a group of settlers from new mexico who made their way into colorado. we've got a lot more going with this story, and we will present it to you later today on 9 news. it is really sad for people down there. and it is odd, too, on ash wednesday. so do you ever wonder what is behind the milky way? we will take a look, coming up. >> also, waste not, want not. we will tell you where a new

all right, if you want to sneak out of the house, i would say do it, because outside, it is glorious. you have to deal with the wind but the temperatures have been so nice. just balmy down here in denver and up to the high country as well, where they have some gorgeous views out there at breckenridge. does it get any better than that? skiers and snowboarders seeing a great day on the slopes. not a lot of fresh powder but thinks are a-okay up there. boulder, a few clouds across

other than that, easy and breezy. winds sustained out of the west at 15 miles an hour. we have seen occasional gusts a little higher than that, but then with the down-sloping winds, hoping to warm us up and dry us out. 19% humidity out here in the 9 news backyard and the temperature readings coming at us now in the low 60s. it files good. especially with all of that sunshine out there. and the winds, they are going to be a problem for us. especially as we go throughout the afternoon. but if you are a fan of them, you can handle them, they should bring some pretty comfortable temperatures. in the mid-60s in broomfield. downtown, around 67 degrees. we are at 57 in fort collins with a handful of 40s and 50s, around the foothills. that is really the worst of the winds right now in the 20 mile- an-hour range from the blackhawk area here, 30 mile-an- hour speeds in boulder, broomfield, out to dumont and well as berthoud pass, 22 mile- an-hour speeds. i think the winds will continue to howl but slowly winding down tomorrow, but tomorrow

around the metro area, a few little light breezes here and there with occasional gusts up to 20 to 25 miles an hour. and on hd doppler 9, it is pretty quiet. much of the west side of the country has been sitting under the huge dome of high pressure. that is giving us the nice dry balmy days over the course of the past couple of days. so tomorrow morning, we wake up, it is beautiful out there. wall to wall sunshine. and then look what happens, by the afternoon, we will be tracking a few little clouds, pouring into the area, tomorrow afternoon, and then stick around, the i-25 corridor, through tomorrow night, and so we will go with partly cloudy tomorrow. -- for much of your day tomorrow. today is gorgeous, 65. looking good. it is just the winds, that we will have to deal with. we stay in the 60s. in northern colorado. 70s across southeastern colorado. with the 30s and 40s in the which still is pretty tonight, about 30 degrees. and a few clouds out there. winds still picking up. out of west. between 10 to 20 miles an hour and then we go just a hair cooler for the next couple of

in the mid to upper 50s, it our average. and a weak little system pours in on sunday, and just cooling us off, but at least picking up the winds, once again, but by next week, we could be talking about 70 degrees.

used a radio telescope to peek through the scars and awful dots to capture the glimpse of -- all of the dots to capture the glimpse of other galaxy, 833 other galaxies to be exact, most are located in a previously unexplored region of space. they are 250 million light years from earth. a team of scientists believe that by studying the new galaxy concentrations, it will help them better understand the movement of the milky way. over in europe, there is a new law that will help feed millions of people in france. it is the first nase -- nation in the world to ban supermarkets from wasting food. before the change, stores would just throw out unsold food. and a lot of it, now stores are required to donate the unsold food to charities and hopefully other countries will follow suit. according to the european commission, one-third, one- third of all food produced for human consumption, around the world, goes to waste. a lot of grocery stores around here do that already. also here in colorado, marijuana sales are on fire

there is new day that that shows businesses sold almost $1 billion in recreational and medical marijuana last year. a billion. colorado took in more than $135 million in marijuana taxes and fees in 2015. as a result of the high sales. so now $35 million of that construction projects. and did you go downtown yesterday for the big broncos parade and rally? everybody is talking about how a million people were there. but we don't really know for sure if that is the right number. yes, mayor hancock did tweet over a million strong. and we all love to think that we had that much spirit, but don't know if that is accurate. it is safe to say that the crowd is larger than the 1998 broncos victory parade, and that year, there was about 650,000 people who came out to congratulate our team. such a great day. so if you tune in to 9 news, for our 11:00 and noon shows tomorrow, you will notice something a little bit

saying an -- in boulder are saying an organized ring is what is responsible for more than two dozen car thefts and now they are trying to find the people involved here. investigators believe people from the group may be driving a light-colored minivan. police sent video clips and photos of the suspects, and in most case, police say the cars were unlocked. and the keys were inside. and in some case, the cars were running crimestoppers is currently offering a $1,000 reward for information that can lead to an arrest. no matter how creative a business venture is, there are still rules you have to follow. cu boulder housing is warning students not to rent out their dorm rooms on air b&b. a sophomore in boston tried doing this. and now the school is thinking about punishing him. >> housing officials told officials say nothing like this has happened at cu boulder as far as they know but they are monitoring rental sites like air b&b. they say renning out dorm rooms

team usa star goal keeper hope solo is being pretty vocal these days about her concerns about competing in the summer olympics in brazil because of the zika virus. solo and the rest of the team are currently in texas, working to qualify for the summer games but this week, she told si .com that quote, if i had to make a choice today, i wouldn't go to the olympics. organizers in rio are monitoring olympic facilities to destroy breeding grounds for the mosquitoes that spread this virus. which has been linked to birth defects in babies. big time. for trying to smuggle drugs into japan. using a tourist knickknack. officers say a 25-year-old got a package with a snow globe with let's say a little more than fake snow floating around inside. officers discovered 900 grams of meth dissolved in that water. that's worth about $570,000. the man who got the package

officers are now investigating. walgreen's is taking some steps to help prevent deaths from heroin overdoses. coloradans will soon be able to buy naloxone without a prescription. the drug is used as an antidote to overdosing on heroin willing sold over-the-counter in colorado and 34 other states and there are kiosks where people can dispose of safely their unwanted or unused or
