jury selection in the trial of the woman accused of removering the unborn baby from an expectant mother began today. 35-year-old lane lured michelle wilkins and took the baby from her womb. the unborn girl did not survive. 300 potential jurors answered questions. lane faces attempted first degree murder, assault, and unlawful termination of a pregnancy. a realty star is facing 52-year-old richard wyatt, the owner of gun smoke in wheat ridge. wyatt surrendered his license in 2012 but continued to sell guns, sent customers to another store. wyatt did not report more than $1 million in income to the irs and turned himself in today. colorado legislators are considering a bill aim ed at

confession by forcing police to record video as they interrogate suspects. 9 news reporter nick mcgill joins us following the hearing where prosecutors advocated for the change. >> this is a move that lawmakers say would increase transparency in police operation and reduce the risk that an innocent person is wrongly convicted. the bill would require law enforcement to record interrogation suspects, the most serious of felony casewise a few exceptions. a spokesperson with the innocent project says those recordings would help protect 1 out of every 4 of their clients who are coerced into false confessions. one of those victims, chris, spoke and was convicted of murder in texas in 1988 and served 12 years before the real killer confessed. convictions like his would be eliminated if officers were required to record the interrogation.

anyone speak out against this bill. and the committee passed it unanimously. >> all right, nick mcgill reporting, thank you. more evidence government workers knew there was danger at the gold king mine, the findings by the u.s. house in the disaster last summer. according to an e mail, epa official in charge said he knew the plugged inactive mine could contain a lot of water. a crew has taken responsibility for triggering the mine leak. 3 million gallons of toxic sludge poured into the animas river contaminating rivers in colorado, new mexico, and utah. an interior department of investigation blamed the epa for not checking to see if pressure built up in the mine. fewer drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of marijuana in 2015 says the colorado state patrol. csp started tracking marijuana-related driving offenses in 2014. troopers issued more than 4500

in the comanche grass lands in colorado, 92 million years ago it was under water. paleontologists revealed the muppet fish. maya rodriguez shows us. >> flattened like a pancake, it is the remaining evidence of a fish that swam in the sea above colorado when dinosaurs roamed the earth. >> we know this fish was in the western interior sea way, in the middle of what is now land lock colorado. >> it is nicknamed the muppet fish, the forest service found it in comanche grass land in picket wire canyon and discovered it by accident. >> that fortuitous strike of a geologic hammer revealed the fish. >> a rare find, only 2 other fossils of the fish are known to exist; in the uk and japan. this is the first ever found in

it helps the shelter and so many homeless pets in need. we want to tell you the dumb friends league does not just help cats, dogs, and other mall animals. they have an equine center that works to help hundreds of horses each and every year. this past fall, 59 malnourished horses in need of a lot of care were brought to the harmony equine center in frank town, they were rescued from texas and had a wide range of health issues, some emaceiated, others had untreated open wounds and infection, they vibeen receiving care-- have been receiving care and gained a significant amount of weight and adjusted to being handled with care, these phone lines and the telethon is going on until 10:30 tonight. we have more information on 9news.com about the dumb friends league and about the telethon. the castle rock star, a shining symbol of that community

hi, there, welcome back, are you sick of the wind? i am, it has been days and days and finally it looks like overnight into tomorrow they weaken to ramp up for the beekd. today was a-- weekend. today was a warm one and beautiful.

there looking on to the range with the bright blue sky above. peckture perfect in-- picture perfect at summit county. 64 dia, low to mid 50s here, 40s eagle and rifle, grand junction hit 41. right now at the airport we cooled things off about 44 degrees, mostly cloudy skies and winds about 16 miles an hour with the gusts even higher. here in the 9 backyard, our temperature readings coming just shy of 50 degrees, a pleasant evening, we are to deal with the winds. the worst of it, coming in across our foothills, 20 miles an hour speeds in allens park, birthed pass 50 miles an hour winds. i think overnight into tomorrow morning we see winds weaken around the foothills while they pick up around the metro area and overall for friday afternoon, things look relatively quiet and calm, wind

here is the deal, we had this tremendous warm air piling in from the southwest, keeping the huge ridge of high pressure in action across the midwest but things change momentarily as the big dome of cold air in canada digs farther to the south affecting the great lakes, upper midwest and that will mean a ridge of high pressure begins to flatten out as we head towards the weekend. that will shove those milder conditions out there to the desert southwest, leaving us kind of on the fringe. tomorrow we will feel a little cooler comparatively peeking to today. 50 degrees and mighty fine compared to the 9 out there in indianapolis. it will be warm. southern california and into phoenix with highs in the 80s. close to 90 degrees, pretty wild, right? overnight it will be a dry one. tomorrow morning we wake up to a few clouds. nebraska and kansas, as that front inches closer into eastern colorado they will be dealing with cooler temperatures as well as the cloud cover too.

lunchtime and then 5:00-6:00, possibly a few isolated snow showers in north platte and the clouds continue to push closer to the front range as the evening goes on, locked in around i-76 to the northeastern plains. tonight should be comfortable, dipping down to the 20s for us in the metro area the eastern plains and up to the high country, only teens, breezy overnight but i thing they weaken tomorrow. tomorrow, a cooler day, we stay in the 40s northern colorado. a little afternoon sunshine should warm us up. 50s for the next couple days, the big sky rocket saturday, about 60 degrees, winds ramp up sunday and cool us off and look at this, close to 70 degrees as we head towards next week. hi, everybody, nuggets head coach michael malone heard

last night in detroit and took his bad mood on to the court, he learned ingred williams, the wife of monty williams was killed in an automobile accident, they worked together a few years ago. williams is an assistant coach with the oklahoma city thunder. >> i apologize oo the team. i coached very angry and i don't know if you heard, monty williams, a good friend of mine, his wife was killed in an accident. so, i apologize to them because i have taken my anger out on them. and they don't deserve that. >> nugget are on the all star break.
