good afternoon. happy saturday. it's always great to have you with us. we'll get your local headlines in just a moment, but first we'd like to introduce you to our newest colleague. you are the newest member of our weekend crew. we're so happy. where have you been all our lives? >> i'm the new kid on the block, and i can't tell you how happy i am to be here. this has been a long road, but i've always wanted to live in denver, i just moved here. i packed up my truck and came here after working for a network, and i am so thrilled to be here. the people here are so nice. the people in colorado are so nice. i'm like, okay, i thought people in texas were nice, and they are, but you guys have us beat. i'm thrilled to be here. when i walked in the newsroom, this was a note from a coworker, belen, good luck, amigo. how can i go wrong with that?

evening. denver. and our temperatures extremely comfortable, too. low 60s now, about 55 in fort collins. afternoon. that was because a cold front pushed through the area. it's moving in and will move out quickly as well. gusts around 28 miles per hour in broom field, 26 aurora. fort collins about 30-mile-per- hour speeds as well as in longmont. our radar and satellite just showing the clouds barely scooting by and moisture primarily staying to our north. goodbye to the wild winds late tonight. tomorrow a bit cooler, quieter. and then the sunshine we have had we're saying see you later to all of that and hello to snow.

for early next week. we'll give you a real taste of colorado winter. >> it will change every five minutes. >> i'm good with that. >> danielle, thank you. dry and warm conditions this week have sparked several wildfires, crews in el paso county battleed one today, started on fort carson's training ground. firefighters aren't saying what caused it to get out of control. about 1,000 acres have burned so far. firefighters set up a fire line, but it's only about 10% contained. no homes or structures have been threatened. i-70 in glen wood canyon did not reopen today as planned and cdot isn't giving new estimates on when it could reopen especially after today. a 5-foot boulder crashed in through a temporary rock fall mitigation fence. crews are still removing rocks along and above the interstate. when i-70 does reopen, it will be just one lane alternating

the pilot car leading the way. cdot plans to update its time line soon. i-25 southbound has reopened after a morning crash involving what troopers say was a drunk driver. troopers say one person was thrown from a car and seriously hurt. traffic was backed up more than 7 miles for drivers heading to colorado springs. the interstate reopened around 11:30 this morning. the snowiest months are coming up in colorado, march, april, and even may at times when the state sees it's large efforts avalanches due to heavy snow. rescue teams are preparing. matt, teams are spending the entire weekend training. >> reporter: they are, christine. it's training they hope will make their response time faster. colorado typically leads the nation in avalanche deaths. if you're trapped under the snow, every second counts.

partners who are with you to try to get you out as fast as they can. if they can't, it's up to rescue teams. near breckenridge -- >> 39th annual rescue conference. >> reporter: -- david and the rescue group have turned this parking lot into a dangerous -- scenarios. >> reporter: -- back country training course. practice. >> reporter: teaching teams from around the state -- >> we have about 45 to 50 people here. >> reporter: how to find a person in the snow using beakens or probe poles and how to get them out. >> rapid deployment. in theory we can be out on to 15 minutes. >> reporter: as fast as possible. very, very seriously.

work in a season that's already brought so much snow. >> conditions don't get better between now and may. >> reporter: that's just yards from the parking lot people are sinking past their knees. >> we've got about a meter of snow. >> reporter: snowiest months are still to come. >> we'll see more avalanches. >> reporter: which is why they're spending their weekend practicing skills they hope they won't need. >> fundamentals are driven home hard. >> reporter: but know will eventually be put to the test. >> we take pride in this county responding as quickly as possible. >> reporter: right now avalanche conditions around the state are moderate, so not all that bad, but they can change quickly. the teams will train tomorrow. they'll work with flight for life and try to do burial

and a lot of their rescue operations aren't just avalanches, but people stuck in the back country not prepared with snow shoes. you can see here this snow is pretty deep. a lot of the rescue calls have been exactly getting people out of snow like i am now. >> definitely. when you feel your foot go through the snow, in this situation, knowledge really is power for those guys. >> reporter: it is. it's exactly what they need is to keep doing this stuff over and over again. theypoint out if you're in the back country going through something like this, you'll get tired quick and they'll be around to get you. >> matt, be careful out there. matt renoux, we appreciate it. the nevada democratic caucuses made for another tight race. it's reported hillary clinton

a chilly dip for a good cause today. people in aurora jumped into the aurora reservoir to raise colorado. party. was? many participants wore costumes, lots of fun. it cost $75 to take a plunge and all the proceeds will be used to buy training in competition for the athletes. >> have you never done this before? >> no. i can't fathom that. >> it feels like needles piercing you. >> do you feel numb? >> a little bit. and when you jump out of the water, i bet they felt like it was the tropics. >> it was another wild one. well above our average by about 15 degrees. we got to enjoy the sunshine and this afternoon that cold front passed through. you probably felt it or maybe

winds gusting across the area. right there at about 3:00, 4:00, you can see our camera jiggling ever so slightly. a few clouds starting to push in. fort collins the flag is howling. dia, 60 degrees. mostly sunny, winds out of the north at about 16 miles per hour. it's relatively quiet and calm. i should probably knock on wood. temperatures about 60 for us as well. things will be winding down as the evening goes on. gusty, fort collins and greeley picking up wind gusts around 35 miles per hour. it's blustery to the south of denver as well. aurora, centennial, castle rock. friends, family traveling up in southern wyoming, into nebraska, howling winds about

could be gusty tonight and quiet tomorrow morning, a good dose of quiet, calm quiet conditions and that will take us through the evening. hd doppler 9 we've been watching this front. it brought us a couple of isolated snow flurries. pretty good size thunderstorm beginning to form out there in parts of nebraska. most of the moisture is in parts of montana, wyoming and throughout the dakotas. stronger storm position to the north, that will keep a cold front diving in from the south. temperatures next couple of days cooler, but we still have high pressure. that will keep us dry the next couple of days. then all eyes out to the pacific northwest where this next stronger storm system will begin to form. that promises to bring us a little bit of rain and snowfall for that tuesday morning drive. the rest of this evening looks quiet and calm. we get rid of that cold front, get the winds to settle down about 11, midnight tonight, and tomorrow morning waking

here it is 4:00, but it's still dry. if you're heading out to the high country, the drive home no issues as far as wet weather. clouds back into the area about 10:00, 11:00 tomorrow evening. 20s for us. 30s on the eastern plains. not bad in the mountains, in the teens. tonight here in town, mostly clear conditions. bit of a breeze, about 5 to 15 miles per hour, but nothing we can't handle after this past week. we stay in the low 50s tomorrow, upper 40s for some spots. that will feel cooler comparing everything that we have gone through for the past week with temperatures. we've been in the 50s and 60s for the past week and tomorrow a day in the 40s and 50s just might feel a hair cooler. looks like late monday afternoon, the evening drive, might have a couple of light rain showers, but really it's going to be tuesday that we wake up to possibly a little bit of snowfall.

it might be that wet sloppy snow. it looks like a cold and blustery tuesday. but the storm system pushes out of here and we're back in business with more sunshine as we wind down the work week and into next weekend. temperatures a good 15 degrees above where we should be for this time of the year. >> winning on the weekends. look at that weather. and next weekend the big game at coors field. >> people flood the sidewalks and vetoes. >> everyone in the world is outside today,. >> i degree with you. and i'm crediting vicente for bringing us the heat. >> thank you, anyway. february started with an 11- inch snowstorm. since then, mostly sunshine and warm. >> we'll take it. as that snow melted you might have noticed some of your lawn

first off let's talk about what snow mold is. >> it's a result of our mid- november 2015 snowstorm. the turf and the lawns was not dormant and we got that snow cover that hasn't left. it just recently melted off. so we've had about two months, three months of snow cover. >> we're looking at it now. how serious is it? it's starting to get nice. we know there will be more snow coming. how concerned do we have to be? >> most lawns in colorado denver metro area are bluegrass. >> looks more like dead grass now. >> rake. don't power rake. aerate, lightly rake. >> just the top off a little bit. >> correct. there are a lot of leaves still setting and open up that air circulation. >> other than it just not looking all that pleasant, is it doing damage to our homes if our lawn is going up to our home? >> no. none whatsoever. >> this is interesting.

just recently moved here, they said we're doing this segment on snow mold, and i know a lot of you just moved here, what is snow mold? snow mold. >> you haven't seen anything yet. just when you're ready for spring, winter starts. not this. >> march and april are the snowiest months. >> when does the bluegrass come back? >> it's starting to recover now, but it will be slower this year. people need to do extra things, air ration most important. >> could be more snow tuesday? >> calling it that wet, sloshy stuff which probably won't help. anything as far as raking, fertilizing, anything specific we need to get? >> what we're seeing now on the screen is the mole damage,

caused a plane crash that killed five people near two years ago. a plane crashed into ridgeway colorado. the national transportation safety board says the pilot lost control of the plane as he was landing. investigators say the pilot handled the initial decent properly but aren't sure why he lost control. it killed five people visiting from alabama. police say there may be more victims in a scam that is targeting the elderly in denver. she's wanted for financial exploitation. police say she's not related to the victims. investigators say they confidence scam. police didn't release details about the scam itself for investigative reasons. this woman may be driving an older beige four-door car. if you have information that 720-913-stop. new results are in from south carolina.

the month when we saw about 12 inches of snow in denver. it's all going to change in the next couple of days. it's been warm as well. 13 above average days, only 7 below. as far as warmest februaries on record, last year we took the cake. i know the month isn't over, but now we're at 55.5 degrees. it's just been unseasonably warm. makes you wonder what is march going to be like? climate prediction center saying the pacific northwest will be looking at above average temperatures and across much of the upper midwest and great lakes and northeast as well. that someone sliver. parts of new mexico and texas looking at below average temperatures. as far as the wet weather goes, uh-huh, pay back. it's coming. >> i feel like we knew that.
