it was just so random that it could have been anybody. >> a community devastated by a random rampage. today, an uber driver will be in court accused of killing six, wounding several others sphwhrrchl and the trial went much quicker than expected. closing arguments in the dynel lane case today. we'll take you live to boulder. and what do you do when you can't find words at describing your excitement at meeting the president of the united states?

police in s.w.a.t. team have been in an aurora house all night, trying to get a man barricaded inside to get in. you'll hear from amelia earhart in a moment but, now we go to noel bragg at the scene. this man has hots at deputies >> reporter: that's what we heard. in the past 30 minutes or so, we have heard a lot of activity here in the hampden and himalaya. more than a dozen dozen bangs were heard. can't tell you what they were. they were not gunshots but could be flash bangs. we heard a few of those, the last few in successions. hampden and himalaya closed

and liverpool where we are. we just heard another loud bang here. emergency vehicles are lined up himalaya street as they tried to negotiate with this man. started at a welfare check here at 9:00. deputies went to check on that man. when they did, they fired one single shot toward the residents towards them. no one was injured but, obviously, they are trying to get this man out of here. there is another bang, just heard it. not sure if my microphone picked that up but, again, well over a dozen of these loud bangs outs here. nearby residences were evacuated. the one immediately by where this one here. others were told to shelter in place. you are dealing with street closure, hampden shut down from himalayas.

thank you for joining us. marty joins us from the backyard. >> some clouds will make us feel little warmer. clouds will hang around, dry during the day down here from the denver area up through loveland, fort collins and greeley. we'll see some rain and snow starting to move into the foothills as we get into the afternoon and evening. so, again, we are looking at dry conditions around here during the course of the day and in a couple of seconds, i'll have an update for you on the latest snow forecast and we'll have the forecast. >> that will be a change. after a week of emotional and graphic testimony, closing arguments began this morning in the trial ofdynel lane, accused

cutting a baby out of her womb. 9news tarhonda thomas has been following the case for us. what do we expect today? >> reporter: we expect to hear from the prosecution and defense. we expect to hear a lot from the prosecution since they did not put one single witness on the stand. we heard opening statements followed by 16 witnesses for the prosecution. one of the first to be michele wilkins, she is the woman whose baby was cut from her womb in march of 2015. prosecutors say that dynel lane was the person who not only executed that attack but planned it out. lane did not plan out this attack, that it was something that simply got out of hand. at any rate, the baby girl did not survive and prosecutors charged dynel lane will with attempted first degree murder

we heard from 911 dispatchers, an officer who talked to dynel lane after this incident saying that lane tried to pass this baby off as her own, pretending she was pregnant. there have been so many twists and turns in the testimony. we even heard from dynel lane via a taped interview with police. we'll let you hear an excerpt from that interview in the next half hour. but prosecutors and defense will go before the jurors for their closing arguments and we'll expect the jury to get this case and start deliberation. the trial has been going faster than expected. it was expected to go at least two weeks and now it's been less than a week and we are expecting closing arguments. we expect to learn more about the man arrested in connection with the murder of a woman in a downtown apartment.

apartment complex park avenue west not far from i-25 north of the ballpark neighborhood. police have not yet identified the victim or suspect. it's unclear if they knew each other. investigators have not said how this woman died. it is the next step in a murder case involving partners in a marijuana grow operation. the suspected killer of a man whose body was found in a burning car will also be in court today. 46-year-old sean geerdes will hear the formal charges against him. police arrested him in november. he is accused of killing his business partner whose car was found in deer creek canyon in an an embankment. people gathered to remember

officer. wood was an army veteran and father of a two month old baby boy. westminster police are still investigating the cause of that crash. in an el paso county man is facing investigation into a dog that mauled five dogs. three of the great danes attacked the kids, three had to have surgery, three of the kids. the fourth was also injured. an uber driver, police say, targeted randomly people. he should be charged with murder, they say. he attacked a dad and his son at a car dealership and a couple of women at a cracker barrel parking lot. by the end of the night, six people were dead, two critically hurt, en clueing a

initially said did not survive. police arrested the uber driver early sunday morning. had he no criminal record. the kalamazoo is another blow to uber. it is raising concerns about drivers at uber. there is word that he picked up a fare in between shootings. he did not have any criminal record. colorado schools received $50 million in federal grants to help them improve. but only a few made a turn around. the colorado post reports that there is little connection between the money and improvement. a few schools have seen a dramatic turn around. denver travista you a a 24%

some have done pretty well but mainly because of strong energetic leadership and intense teacher training today, college scholarships funded by retail marijuana taxes in pueblo could become bigger. county commissioners are talking about matching those funds in order to improve the scholarships. it is 6:10 now. the process is slow but it is progress one week after a rock slide damaged the highway. cdot reopened a single lane of i-70. so traffic can get through by following a pilot car. the roads will close from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. so crews can continue repair work at 4:00, that service will resume once again. >> kine of a thing but a lot than taking a detour. >> four or five hours.

we are looking at snow moving into utah right now. it is a pretty compact system right now but it will spread out as it moves into the koord mountains. it will spread into southeastern colorado. relatively mild start. teens, 20s to start the day. for us, generally cloudy conditions. we'll start to pick up snow, 2:00 to 3:00 in the afternoon. it will stay in the foothills

starting to slide off the foothills. we get into the low 50s here. wet snow falling by the time hill. snow will be falling. it's going to be much less than northern colorado, metro area, two to four inches. we'll have a lot of melting in the pavement. snow. slightly higher amounts. inch rain. snow moves into the mountain areas during the morning, evening. tomb, we'll have a specific snow forecast coming up here for the mountain areas. 40s, 50s to the east and 30s and 40s for our mountains. not bad. tonight. snow starts to pick up at least a couple of inches around here. a lot, a lot of melting going

against amc theaters which offer audio description devices. however, amc is rarely giving them appropriate devices. the lawsuit claims that the devices have low batteries, or not working and sometimes staff gives them device for deaf and hard of hearing instead of the blind. and net flicks has some recommendations. recommendations will be based on viewing habits of customers from around the world. netflix is hoping to give you exact living what you want to watch. >> if you don't like, move on.

wu know now what caused a hiker's death in el dorado canyon. a terrible accident. david robust died after falling off a cliff while hiking. this happened in september. foundation employee and reported missing when he didn't return from a hike.

the death toll continues to rise in fiji this morning after a cyclone tore through the island over the weekend. so far, 18 people there are con firmed dead and they say that number could rise because rescue crews are still having trouble communicateingwith some islands. winds from the cyclone, cyclone winston reached some 177 miles per hour, making it the strongest storm in the atmosphere since they began keeping records. bill cosby's wife kamil -- camille will have to testify in a deposition. cosby has denights their lawsuit. lawyers for cosby tried to squash the subpoena saying that his wife didn't have any information.

to 10 inches in the foothills. more like 6 to 12 inches and several inches of snow down south. wet mountain valley, 4 to 8, same thing for the elk, san juan, and up around steamboat. best snow, jeffco, foot hills into douglas county and then into the continental divide, winter park, summit county and the vail pass area. this is an advisory that goes until 6:00 tomorrow night. if you are like a lot of folks and wondering is i-70 open yet? well, temporarily. as for right now, that stays in place until 9:00 this morning. tap point, the highway shuts down and crews continue to clean up until 4:00 p.m. the current plan is that they'll switch back to alternating lane with a pilot car to help out with that mess. as for the metro drive, free ways in excellent shape as we take a closer look at the speeds on the north side, we

time we heard those loud bangs, a dozen of them. i can smell something in the air, some type of chemical. i'm not sure what it is. we are here at hampden and himalaya. hampden is shut down from liverpool to himalaya because the arapahoe county sheriff's office is dealing with this barricaded man. we have video of this morning. last night. this has been going on for hours and hours, started with a welfare check. bangs. that was one of the bangs that we heard out here. started with the welfare check. deputies arrived at the home. him. he fired one shot at the deputies from inside the. that. shortly after that, he

homes nearby were told to shelter in place them been trying to negotiate with this man. we are trying to figure out what loud bangs were that we hear. we don't think they were gunshots, maybe flash bangs or canisters. if you are driving in this area, keep in mind that east hampden is shut down right now between liverpool and himalaya where we are. so we're going to continue to follow this story and provide updates throughout the among. right now, let's hand it over to amelia earhardt with more. >> reporter: thank you, noel. of course, hampden is a major, major artery running through the 225 area. that's a major part of the arteries in our city. both directions, in fact, eastiest closure. that will send your alternate further down to the south,

so far, volume and crash count, very, very low. we have not seen many issues or traffic building right there. right around central city parkway, we are looking for a crash. neither direction reported along i-70. still so far, in the greens. that means that speeds in the 50s and 60s. back here to i-25 and 19, busy start. southbound near 125, and southbound at tamerrak, the busiest location marty, things cool off and then snow is on the way. i guess we are due for a little moisture. >> going to be nice to have. by this time tomorrow, i'll be standing out here with wet snow and winds will kick up, too. it's been so warm we're going to get a lot of melting on the pavement. i would characterize it as more of a wet snow than icy snow as

gosh, this is going on right now, just the sky is on fire here over the metro area. front range, we have the storm system moving through central utah right now, making its way into colorado. dry. foothills area. by 2:00 or 3:00, we'll start getting some rain showers here. shortly after sunset. and then after sunset, that's when we'll start picking up the snow up here. but the heavier snow is going to be in and around the foothills. after sunset, you could see some rain showers in the area. during the daylight hours, we are looking at generally dry conditions here for high temperatures, 40s to about 50 degrees with 30s and 40s in the foothills. we'll have a detailed forecast for you. not going to be a huge storm because it's been so warm. this pavement retained a lot of heat. we may melt an inch or two.

a random shooting rampage in michigan has left a community confused. police have a suspect in custody but they don't know why he shot eight people on saturday night. six people have died. that suspect is expected to be in court today? >> cory, he'll likely face several murder charges. the 45-year-old uber driver does not have a criminal record. right now, they have no idea what caused him to reportedly shoot in the first place. the first shooting happened a little before 6:00 saturday evening. one woman was shot outside of an apartment complex. four hours later, he killed a father and son who were car shopping. a few hours after that, he shot five people at a cat at a restaurant parking lot. four women in their 60s and 70s were killed and a 14-year-old who was with them was first declared dead but michigan state police are now calling her survival a miracle. doctors were about to harvest her organs when the 14-year-old

she was rushed into surgery right now. one rider said he was one of the passengers. >> i said jokingly to the driver, you are not the shooter, are you? he gave me some sort of a no response. >> reporter: that just gives you chills, hearing about their interaction right there. sunday morning. uber says that man passed their background checks and they are cooperating with police on the investigation right now. but, guys, you know, it's interesting because nothing is connected right now and that's why they are having a real hard time dealing with this thing. it's all so random. >> very random and very sad, yes. the trial for the suspect accused of cutting a fetus from a woman's womb in longmont could start wrapping up. tarhonda thomas is live today.

defense didn't call any witnesses? >> reporter: it was a big surprise. on friday, the prosecution rested after calling 15 witnesses to the stand and the defense team then informed the judge they would not be calling any witnesses including the defendant herself, dynel lane. let's talk about this case that we began on wednesday. that's when we saw the opening statement in this case. prosecutors never denied that dynel lane participated in this attack but they say it was not premeditated, was not planned out. on the other side-- defense team said that on the other side, the -- the defense feel said dynel did not plan that. but on the other hand, the prosecution said she did. she lured michele wilkins to her home. wilkins said that she went into

moment and -- home and that's when she was attacked. dynel lane gave a statement and she said that michele wilkins was the attacker. >> it was a struggle. i was yelling. i was maybe trying to get my neighbors to hear me and i just -- is trying to grab for her phone, but she, i think, had a lock on it. i'm not sure. but it was like -- i was trying to call 911. i tried to yell at her but she would not stop. >> reporter: we heard witnesses testify that dynel lane changed her story several times. and prosecutors brought up the fact that she said that she was pregnant and that may have been

the defense, again, didn't call any witnesses. closing arguments will begin today. and then the jurors will get the case. >> 100 years if she's convicted. thank you, tarhonda. a woman and a young child were seriously hurt when they were involved in a crash. both were not wearing any seat belt when they were involved in a crash. the woman was supposed to have her baby today. alcohol and speed were not the cause-the-crashing so police are looking into who had the right of way. the company that makes the rifle used to kill 20 first graders and staff at sandy hook want the lawsuit filed against them thrown out.

protected by a 2005 federal law that shields gun manufacturers from both lawsuits against criminal use of their product. a judge will hear arguments from both sides and the company's lawyers this afternoon before making a decision the director of the fbi says that the agency owes it to the victims of the san bernardino attack to two whatever it needs to get into the cell phone the fbi cannot look at the survivors in the eye or at themselves in the mirror if they don't follow this lead. his comments come five days after a federal magistrate in california ordered apple to help hack into an iphone used by syed farook. farook and his wife killed 14 people in the attack in december per. and the supreme court will hear a case for the first time passed away.

president obama says that he will nominate a justice despite objections by republicans who want to wait until the next president. and colorado families for a fair wage filed two proposed constitutional amendments with the state secretary he was. they would raise the minimum way to 12 bucks an hour. business leaders say if the proposal is passed, it could lead to fewer jobs and big raises in price. and families face the low he is irs audits in decades. irs collections of audit- related revenues fell to $7 billion the lowest level seen in 14 year. researchers spent a lot of time looking at people selling items on ebay and turned up surprising results about people doing this.

around time which gets progressively less as we move to the south. cdot crews are working hard and making good progress cleaning up the rock slide across i-70. they have cleared up over 4400- tons of rock so far. pilot crews will lead traffic through in one direction until 9:00 am this morning. the eastbound and westbound sides will then alternate. from 9:00 to 4:00, the highway will be closed completely to let the crews keep working. this pattern of being open overnight and closed during the day will continue until further notice. >> things.

looking at great-looking weather around the area. sunrise is fantastic around here for us this morning. a few snow showers just starting to move into northwestern colorado, moving out of utah, will continue to migrate into the state as the storm system continues to shift from utah into colorado. it will drop into our state. it will be a police -- blizzard potentially for the midwest. it will be stronger there. clouds will be around all day. snow showers in the mountains by this afternoon, just after sunset.

the snow move down the hill and move across the i-25 corridor. temperatures today ahead of all that snow in the 40s to about 50 with 30s and 40s in the foothills. total snow, still looks like 2 to 4 around here. there will be considerable melting on streets and highways because it's been so warm. lately, we drop things off up north, 5 to 10 in the foothills and castle rock to the south and west and parts of highland ranch, upwards of three to six inches of brand new snow by tomorrow morning. snow moves in during the day in the mountains. it continues to shift to the south and east as we go through the night tonight into tomorrow morning. 40s, 50s, 60s in the east, 30s, 40s in the mountain. tomorrow is the big powder day, a little bit more. upper 40s to near 50s. the snow gets going and the wind increases out of the north over 20 miles per hour at times. we are done with the snow.
